Those little details you mention are actually the cherries worth picking in these videos, thanks for mentioning them! The details become more useful when you are closer to install.
Thanks for putting this together boss. Put my e30 s52 swap on pause about two years ago and recently found / gathered up all the parts I had for it cause I need a new lil town car and yall going into detail about everything was super helpful. If it all goes to plan I'll be doing some dry rot skids by this weekend.

I was watching all this just to see how do you solve the cooling system in e30. AND NOW 40 minutes passed and I found out the cooling system is not working yet and temperature gauge is not connected. Nice!
Love seeing these videos. I’m in the middle of parting out a friend’s e39 to fund a turbo m20 build. Just picked up my 2nd e30 and have been dying to start building her. These videos keep me sane in the meantime until I’m able to start building. Love what ya’ll do!
Your videos are helpful. I have a 1985 325e it cranks and runs for about 3 secs and cuts off. I’ve replaced both fuel pumps and fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor button and coil. I’ve also replaced fuel pump relay fuse.
Doesn't really matter but I have had good results going from the head to the lower hose and then the upper heater core hose to the crossover pipe. Seems to make the bleed procedure easier.
Another thing that helps the bleeding process immensely in these cars is to drill a small bleed hole in the t-stat. Drilling a bleed hole has no adverse effects. Eventhough the expansion tank is the highest point in the system, and should technically self-bleed, sticking the front end on ramps or a high floor jack can make a stubborn one bleed out like nothing. Just a couple tips for someone who may be having trouble bleeding they're cooling system.
I’m doing a S52 swap into my E30 as well and I just wanna say thank you your video was very helpful. I have run into some problems however, what Motor mounts are you using? I’m wondering if the E34 mounts will work. Also, what intake did you use, was it an E34 intake? Thank you!
M52TUB25 has a dipstick drain back pipe on it. If ya had one out back... Maybe not the right diameter but maybe. Enjoy watching all your videos as a fellow older BMW enthusiast/cobbler. I'm baked and for some reason I thought I'd share.
Yeah unfortunately the E34 pan has a uniquely small hole for the dipstick tube. You could however drill it larger and countersink it and get it to work properly I just did not have the kind of time to do that unfortunately. You can also just cut the Y off of the s52 tube and weld it onto the E34 tube
S54 is substantially more difficult. The pan is a dual pickup from the factory and if you switch to the e34 pan you can't run the s54 oil pump. S54 is also setup for a CanBus car so getting the cluster to work is much more effort. S52 is a piece of cake as the videos on this channel show.
Good work on the swap. Only thing I really see that it could use from where I'm sitting is an m50 manifold. E30's are such a timeless car, both in driving experience and in looks. The US versions of the m5x are definitely readily available and are getting cheaper. If I ever pick up another e30 I'm going non-vanos m50 with a hx35 slapped on it, on the cheap. A good amount of people have thrown a set of ARP's and a Cometic and made a reliable ~400 whp. Not too shabby in an e30 chassis. Especially the fact that the non-vanos m50's can be had complete for a couple hundred bucks. Hell, you can grab a whole '91 or '92 build e34 for next to nothing, and get the whole n.v. m50, (correct oil pan already mounted,) trans, accessories, etc. The n.v. m50 has forged internals, and no worries for vanos issues when it comes to tuning so if you're boosting it, it just simplifies things. Its definitely been done and proven plenty of times. I built 3 or 4 of them for customers from the ground up and they do the trick well, especially for a budget minded person who doesn't have an unlimited amount of money to spend. Keep doin what ur doin fellas!!! E30
@@sslum Totally depends on the quality of the parts you decide to use, and if you do your own work mainly. Some of the stuff you can definitely get away with buying used or second hand from people that are upgrading or putting their cars back to stock. Are you also talking stock longblock, MLS/ ARP's, or built internals?? These are all things that can change the price quite substantially. Lmk and I'll see what I can tell you. It would be going off memory since it was quite a bunch of years back.

Ever have an s52 have a weird vibration after doing a timing chain? The car runs great except a vibration in the mid range rpm like above 2500 to 4k. The mounts are new no i doubt it’s that.
You are using a 318i, is the trans going to hold all that power, especially the diff which is the smallest in BMW? Hopefully one day, we can see you doing a euro S50 swap. Those engines are not expensive, brought one before for like 2 grands. So, how much is the damages in total. It will be really cool if you can list them out. Keep it up!
so firstly, we didnt use the 318 transmission. We used the zf 5 speed transmission from the e36 m3. would love to do a euro swap, it isnt much different but those ITB's are the absolute tits. as far as cost goes, if you purchase all new parts and do it yourself you can do this pretty easily for around 4k. 2500 for engine/trans is about going rate and then just start adding on for the swap parts and replaceable wear items.
I debating on a s52 swap or building up the m20b27 in my (528e) to its max potential. which do you recommend? I'm looking for around 250hp and reliability. It will be driven hard on the weekends. 🤔🤔🤔 feedback is appreciated.

so the all of the S52 connectors only fit where they belong, luckily. the harness with the Y is an update harness. it connects to the crank position sensor in the rear and goes up to the vanos solenoid in the front, and connects to a couple other plugs along the way. put it on first and then connect the main engine harness to it. This is Chris btw, I have an S52 on the floor right now that I just put a harness on. DM me @DBOChris if you want pics. Your car is going to Rip man.
That's all well and good however that does not change the fact that you need to adapt it to the X20 side that comes from the E36 so you either have to make an adapter or chop the X20 off of the E36 side and attach a c101 which is fine but I don't prefer to do that because if I ever choose to take the engine out and put it back into an E36 it is removable
