I've started breeding guppies and recently got a betta! just wanted to thank you and i'm glad my fish hobby journey was inspired by such a passionate person :)

THE four essentials to breed Shrimp:
    1) Provide enough hiding spots for new born Shrimp (A big clump of moss or other dense plants)
    2) Provide enough surface area (f.e. porous stones, wood, dense plants)
    3) Feed them REALLY HEAVY
    4) Regular culling of colorless and unhealthy shrimp to keep the strain in good quality
Shrimp eat biofilm. You have to find out how to boost the growth of biofilm. Thats the key!
P.S. Many micro organisms are phototrope ;)

Yea in many of these videos on shrimp you are told not to overfeed ... And if you are new and have 10 shrimp in a tank it is easy to overdo. But yea I find population growth seems mostly limited by food, and some protein boosts that as well. In fish tanks where I frequently feed small live foods that settles on surfaces like artemia, small worms etc populations explode quickly.

I know you know what you're doing, but I'd highly highly recommend putting the duckweed with tank water and not just dry on its own in a bucket, and plan on returning it to the tank. Because shrimplets love hiding in duckweed. I transplanted duckweed from my cherry shrimp tank into my discus tank 3 months ago, and ended up with cherry shrimp living in the discus tank after it. You just never know.
edit: Okay I got further into the video and I just wanted to say, shrimp molting has nothing to do with water changes. If anything, too many and too big of water changes can cause osmotic shock and kill off your colony. The only thing that affects their growth is food, you need to be feeding way more. High protein and tons of calcium rich foods. You also should add tall driftwood, to give the shrimp more space, and throw in some longer rooted floating plants, they love that. I've had my red cherry shrimp colony for just 4 months now, I started with 22. I've done a total of 2 water changes with them. They are in a 29 gallon and I now have well over 80 shrimp hanging out. If you raise them right they are just absolutely prolific breeders. My amanos with them also stay berried and molt monthly, while of course I can't raise the larva right now, they are still doing amazingly. My bamboo shrimp with them also molts every 1-2 months. I've had him and the amanos for longer to be absolutely fair. The tank has been established for well over 8 months.

You need to have a source of calcium in the tank for molting. My tank of blue dream shrimp stopped breading after a while when I had pebble substrate. After adding crushed coral they started molting and breeding again.

Well there probably was bunch of babies in the duck weed. In neo shrimp tanks I normally have a peice of base rock or crushed coral or oyster shells in the tank. More calcium for them and increases the pH.

Thanks for an update. I normally change 10% of water weekly that works great for me. Also regular water top off is quite important from my experience so the water parameters stay the same and I would recommend to do it on the daily basis. The moss wouldn't grow very well without aqua soil in the tank or dosing ferts from my experience and often will overgrow with algae like in your case

Try adding coral to the tank

@@oftheHowl I only have this one tank. It’s a 7 gallon. Upgrading to a 20 soon but I probably won’t be housing shrink until I have more knowledge I guess. I have 2 more shrimp alive in my tank and they look healthy, but just one molt can kill them so it’s sad. I’m not doing big water changes anymore.

I had die off when I did sudden water changes. Now I add the new water slowly over a period of time (2-3 hours) and the die off stopped. You can try dripping the new water into your tank (depending on the size of the tank)

Id test all your water parameters including hardness. It definitely sounds like a bad molt (especially if they have a white ring around their body) which is most often caused by poor water conditions, an uncycled tank or lack of calcium in the water.
Try and avoid water changes as much as possible as shrimp are super sensitive - if needed, slowly add the water, either drip it, or add small amounts over a few hours.
Add a few indian almond/katapa leaves as this helps keep the ph nice and they like eating it, and crushed coral or egg shells to boost the calcium in the water column :)

Duckweed... use salvinia or water lettuce... I hate duckweed...
Except outside... it looks like a completely different plant in the sun in my patio pond... that's how it tricked its way inside... the tub was my first floating plant project, it's all gone from inside now, but I was not impressed by it

Have you ever thought about using a bell syphon to do automatic water changes? You could use a drip line to keep adding new water and then the bell syphon would do a partial water change when the water level rose? There is a video on TH-cam which, at 2mins in, explains an automatic bell syphon: th-cam.com/video/_vV_z_0lFQ8/w-d-xo.html
