Plus i dont think addons were that devoloped back then. I dont think its really needed since it was already on the screen next to the pet.

True there were probably not a lot of addons early on for anything. I know I played for a long time before I even knew what an addon was, lol. I never got too worried about pets once I had loyalty maxed. I would panic a bit when I'd tame a new pet and it didn't like the food I brought, so I'd have to quick look up what it needs, lol. If I had random food I'd often just feed the pet rather than vendor it, cuz, why not.

YES! Totally brings me back to when I was a total noob back in 2006. First toon was a Tauren hunter and I had no idea you had to feed your pet. I remember strolling through thunder bluff and my pet up and left me. I was shocked lol!
when being a hunter was an elite experience if handled correctly and really aimed to give your pet the best of the best food........ my lion in vanilla liked bacon
Having to feed your pet was annoying sure but it did give you a feeling of a bond with your pet. Plus unlike v-pets such as tamagochi and digimon (Vital Bracelet notwithstanding, unlike the TamaSmart, you can't even feed your digimon in VB. I want to give Guilmon his Guimon Bread and Gammamon his "champion" chocobars darn it), you don't have to clean up your pet's droppings. Also remember classic hunters: If you can't find the right food in your bags, dismiss your hungry pet until you find some. Also be sure to level fishing if your pet eats fish.
Why do I picture, right now, that Troll hunter turning around and seeing another hunter feeding his boar with pages of the "Greenhill's of Stranglethorn" and be ok with it ? It would have been hilarious.

Of course I also hated managing bag space for arrows and sucked at managing pet attacks, but the idea of sending my pet into battle with a sadface like some sort of indentured servant killed me.

I used to just carry around a bag of cheap vendor meat/whatever the mobs in the area dropped for my raptor haha. Ran out of gunshot more often than I did meat, keeping the pet happy was part of the fun of the class for me, but I understand why it would be annoying to anyone that only cares about efficiency in their games.

A mechanic that I completely forgot about. I took feeding my pets so seriously lol. I would try to over feed them. I needed that green smiley face.
Happiness actually increased their damage way back when, so overfeeding was perfectly viable.
