The Lab LA is our weekly post-work party where we stream the best American and International DJs from our secret Hollywood location. Last Friday we had certified legend Paul Oakenfold take over the decks in celebration of 25 years of his Perfecto Records imprint.
For over three decades Paul Oakenfold has been an enduring force at the top of the global dance music scene. Over the years he’s bagged Grammy nominations, scored Hollywood blockbusters, and can lay claim to being one of the crew of DJs that brought Ibiza's Balearic vibes to the UK and got the ball rolling on the British acid house movement.
In 1990 Oakenfold launched his label Perfecto Records, and over the last 25 years has released music from major trance players like Paul van Dyk, Tiësto, BT, and of course Oakenfold himself. The label is dropping its 25th anniversary ‘Best of’ compilation on March 20, and features many of the massive tracks that defined Perfecto’s iconic sound of the years.
Recognised as one of the Godfathers of British dance music and arguably the most important producer in trance, you don’t want to miss this opportunity to see this legend go large at our intimate spot in Hollywood. - เพลง

In the mid-80's a very good friend of mine [Mickey Jackson] kept going on about a couple of his mates who had just started DJ'ing in the South London area. Mickey knew I was a DJ [I was always making him 'mix' tapes and telling him about all the big tracks I was playing] so he was constantly pestering me to come and hear them play to get my opinion. Finally I agreed to catch one of their nights.
A few weeks later in a club called 'Coppertops' in Croydon High Street, Trevor Fung and Paul Oakenfold put on their first proper gig. It was mostly attended by their friends and family - and to tell the truth, it wasn't that great. They were 'experimenting' with a new style of dance music - which is always difficult - and it just wasn't working. Despite that, Paul and Trevor were determined to stick with it.
Mickey introduced me to Paul and Trevor and we became quite good friends. In fact, a few months later we all went on a skiing holiday together - although Paul and Trevor spent most of their time in their room getting wasted! [it was insane - they had both spent an absolute fortune on all the best skiing outfits and equipment and I think they only actually went out on the slopes for one day!]
Anyway, and as is typical on the 'London scene' Paul began to get more and more noticed. [Trevor had more or less decided he wasn't as talented at DJing, so became Paul's [sort of] manager. Paul was by now rapidly improving and building a very solid reputation - his dedication and commitment to his music was finally working and the plaudits were rolling in. He launched his record label [Perfecto] released his first album and the rest as they say is history.
I am truly so pleased for Paul - he did it his own way, worked bloody hard and deserves all the acclaim he got. Good on yer mate!
What a story. Sad how these experiences become nuances like you have to dig deep like an archaeologist to find these interesting, personal anecdotes.

One ... I am so glad nobody has recorded me dancing on camera, ever.
Two... I will always remember the days of blasting Global Underground, Tranceport, Resident Cream, Creamfields '99, Another World, and Ibiza. Oakey captured time back then, absolutely fantastic times for trance. I am sure to be rocking those mixes in my twilight years ... as an old timer in my recliner, like a boss.

First thanks for the memories. I'll second your second... Oakenfold's (I believe) "white album" Resident: Two Years of Oakenfold at Cream. I agree the GU albums, Gatecrasher, Ministry of Sound, Tranceport, and so on. Then the free Mixmag albums on the covers, ex.Timo Maas...brilliant! I definitely foresee listening to them until the end of time...
Don't forget the Essential Mix 1999 World Tour. Ibiza, Shanghai. Sydney, Liverpool, Havana, Miami & Buenos Aires just to mention a few. Each one an awesome classic Oakey mix.

This music is from above...if you dislike it, it is because you do not worth being part of such a higher state. Oakenfold is a very talented DJ, his mixes are wonderful, he includes vibes from great tunes from the 90s, starting from Jaydee, Miles, etc....

What a classy set from the one and only Mr Paul Oakenfold. Such a fresh sounding set that is very organic and authentic and a pleasure to listen to. First time I have listened to a set (an set) in quite some time in its entirety and what an enjoyable and wonderful track selection in this set. Have always loved Paul Oakenfold and had the privilege of regularly enjoying his weekly residency in Cream in Liverpool back in the mid 1990's. Simply legendary and clearly the passion and fire that he has for music is still burning ever so brightly. Class and talent always remains and the love for music never wanes with this musical maestro, simply wonderful !

Has to be one of the most influential Djs of the modern age. I used to love his residency at Cream in Liverpool with Seb Fontaine, those were the days lol.

Lots of comments about the crowd. Sorry to say, but its the DJ that controls the crowd. They have their movement moments. Especially when the (minimal) beat drops. Dont get me wrong, Paul is my favorite, a legend and I would by far would go to his show ABOVE any other DJ. The crowd wouldn't be there if they didn't like him. Just saying.

OLD SKOOL IS OKENFOLD,1988/89sets this is same old,a bit ruff around the edges,he has never been the best at mixing records,but has brilliant production ability
Oh, this takes me back to my raver days in 99 - 03. I sure as hell didn't dress like these people though. Times sure have changed, glad to see Paul still doing it. Countdown - 02/03 in the Bronx, NY. Will always bring a smile to my face.

I respect Oakey, he is a legend in his own right. I own a ton of Perfecto records from way back when but his set here, not sure. This crowd though. i don't know they seem they just came from a Shelter and need to be fed.

I am a classical music sort of chap through and through and know almost nothing about popular music but Paul Oakenfold is one of only three DJs I think I've ever even heard of. I though he was a pretty big deal in his sphere.
? He was the biggest name in clubland 95-99 with an absolute massive library of tunes he and his label had released...maybe a tiny bit overrated really.
Paul Oakenfeld is not underrated, in fact with this type of deep set he shows he can claim a top-spot in the resurgence of House.

After watching just five minutes of this video. I suddenly realise that the dance music scene I knew and loved are now over. Those memories I have of oakenfold being his epic Goa mix, to banging it in a tent in creamfields with 20000 adoring scousers, to stepping off the plane into the ibiza madness that he helped create, even the magazine mixmag back in the day was a progressive print that we bought religiously.
Yet now what has become of Oakie, fooking around with cds, in some awful upscale LA joint, while having the humiliation of being presented by a young punk who represents mixmag. All the while playing nu disco to an american crowd that really is to cool for school but hate to break to them are pretty clueless!! Oh well it was epic while it lasted and the memories, or the hazy memories of those times are legendary.

The 2 song afterwards are pretty decent tech house tunes so it's worth listening a bit further. I agree however, the set as a whole is a bit too poppy
