As I recall, the only *Joseph Kahn* music video I really liked was *_"Hero"_* for *Enrique Iglesias* with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mickey Rourke in a takeoff on Tony Scott's 1990 Kevin Costner/Madeline Stowe/Anthony Quinn starring thriller _"Revenge"_ with additional shades of Roger Donaldson's _"The Getaway"_ from 1994 and 1993's _"Indecent Proposal"_ directed by Adrian Lyne. Some visually sumptuous pastiche.

Toxic holds a special place in my mind. It came out when my life wasn't going too well. Just hearing that iconic violin sting still makes me smell the smells, feel all those feelings. But for some damned reason, it is a sort of happy nostalgia.
Toxic, Nostalgia Locomotive and a few other songs from around that time brings bad memories, but happy thoughts.
I don't know, maybe it's because I made it through in one piece and my life turned out a lot better? It was the lowest my life ever got and I know I will never be that low again. Life can throw whatever it wants at me and I know that I can take it. Maybe that violin sting reminds me of that, rather than the feelings I had at that moment?

As a music video director myself this was super informative and validating. I'm often pressured to create a distinct "style" as a director, like people expect me to do all the same thing and all my videos to look the same because a lot of other MV directors are like that. But for me, I also just like to follow the aesthetic of the artist. If the artist wants cinematic, I'll do that, but if the artist wants a lofi look then that's fine too. I like learning how the artist thinks, I try to imagine it as "how would the artist make a video if THEY were a director and not a musician?" that's the most interesting challenge for me.

👋Here are my major takeaways from Joseph Kahn!
    • A good music video needs good filmmaking. MVs need to connect with emotion and humanity. Technique is just a delivery system.
    • Instead of doing hardcore references, Joseph will just a feel of it and then regurgitate in his own way.
    • Get into the heads of your artist to understand what their art means to their audience.
    • Instead of listening to the song with pre-written lyrics written down, write down the lyrics by hand for more immersion.
    And the most important one...
The music video is a singer's medium. The spotlight here is for the artist. You need to capture the essence of the artist. (Ex. Michael Jackson stole the show in Thriller, Christopher Walken in “Weapon of Choice”, Eminem in “The Real Slim Shady”)
