A "Yes" vote in September's independence referendum would of course be momentous for Scotland, but what effect would it have on the rest of the United Kingdom..on the remaining rump?

Lol, the comments on here are hilarious after spending so much time steeped in the relatively polite and considerate world of the Yes Scotland and Better Together Facebook pages.
This isn't about Scotland versus England, it's about Scotland versus Westminster. Every person making this about some rivalry which doesn't really exist outside sporting events is momentously missing the point.

John Cook - this just looks like more “whip up a frenzy” nonsense. The great majority of Scots barely think about England or English people. There is a great distrust of Westminister, and a desire to be independent. Actually, it would probably do England good if it was to become independent of Westminister too.

@@thegolem797 I'm not trying to wind up anyone. I think anyone who hates the English for stuff that happened hundreds of years ago to people they never met are mentally ill. The trouble is there are a large number who think this way. The stickers and slogans are still up all over the town is live in and you should see and hear the hate from people if you walk about with a union jack flag on you no matter how small. These idiots feel so hard done by . I just don't get what their problem is.

John Cook - people like that are pretty sad, and they bring the independence movement into disrepute. What part of Scotland are you in - I certainly don’t see any anti-English stickers and slogans here in East Renfrewshire. The most I’ve seen is the traditional rolling of the eyes when 1966 is mentioned by commentators within ten seconds of any World Cup soccer match 😂

Churchill was right in one way.,. "The best argument against Democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the electorate".. or in this case a 5 minute read of these ridiculous comments.
In my opinion Scotland should vote yes.. Its about Scotland making a statement against neo liberal policies that have dominated much of the politics in the last 70 years.
Working/middle class people should all hope Scotland finds a way to make the change work. Then i hope English people look north and inspired by successful left wing revolution in Scotland do there utmost to rid our selves of puppets (muppets) we have in power. There rich kids and career politicians with no social conscious at all. if we don't do things for the good of society and social justice then whats the point?
its not about English people hating Scottish People or vice versa, its not even about oil for once.. The world is changing and for these islands and indeed Europe the tide has started turning.. Where we end up is any ones guess.
Were all different and thats fine, its our humanity that unites us. Don't make the neo liberals job easier by undermining socially democratic ideas with nationalism. This is about political class not working class values.. Normal working and middle class people share similar values the world over. This has been my experience. people generally know whats right and wrong. doing it is a choice. We the 99% are most definitely in this together no matter what flag we stand under....

They will be some who voted no because they thought Scotland wasn't ready, but we might be at the next referendum. And they'll be people like me, who wasn't sure, who didn't mind either way, but just voted no seeing as it's what I'm used too. Next time around I'll be voting yes

my dad works for an aluminium company and is quite high up on marketing. i was currently unemployed at the time of the referendum. so in his best interests i voted no. because it would have gave him far better access to jobs within the market. granted majority of his work is in and around glasgow but he does stuff abroad as well as down in england. so yeah that was primarily one of the reasons, he listed a bunch more that i cant really remember. but for a man nearing his 50's and keeps up to date on politics that could effect a business i trust his choice's from time to time.

I have seen no reputable economic experts talking about clear pros and cons nor have I seen any independent political experts talking about the pros and cons in terms of national and international futures. There's too much talk of history, rhetoric, strong words and sensationalism. The closest I've found to a rational series of logical thought thus far is from George Galloway. I've yet to find a coherent rationalé from the Yes campaign but I'm still trying.

It would generally make me very sad if Scotland vote yes. I'm 26 years old. I don't fully understand the political and economical impact for a Yes or a No vote.
All I know is that I'm British, I don't refer to myself as English very often (football matches mostly), I grew up as British, learning about what we the British achieved and being very proud of this amazing nation and it's constant ability to punch above it's weight. with our Industrial, Science and Arts.
The Scottish Yes Vote may give the Scottish people the identity they feel they have never had. But at the same time they are going to rob 50+million people of theirs in the process.
I urge the Scottish to Vote No for Independence, by doing so they needn't choose to be Scottish or British they can continue to be both and why would you not want that?

I'm an englishman and I think you should vote yes. I know I would if I were a scot. Be brave, take the step, believe in yourselves. What have you got to lose, more decades of being controlled by those muppets in westminster? Grasp this opportunity to be what you want to be with both hands. It's going to be hard, but worthwhile things never come easy.
If you can't do it for yourselves, do it for me. I want to see the look on the westminster boys faces when they get kicked in the nads by the consequences of their own actions.
We could have been better together, but seeing as we are together on paper they never bothered trying to make that a reality. Just stole your oil and used you for tax experiments.
A no vote is you agreeing that you can't, that you need westminster, that you aren't brave enough, committed enough, intelligent enough to run your own lives. Why would you accept crap like that, it's the argument to be a victim.
Look at the no campaign, lots of reasons not to go, not one reason to stay that doesn't benefit them more than you. Every labour politician proposing no is thinking scots don't vote tory. Every tory suggesting no is thinking I like the way it is, f**k the scots.
Where is what you want in that?

Bob Wilson What is your point ? Scotland served England in its conquests to form Empire and all these countries are now free. That admittedly was throughout the past centuries but this 21st century has independent self governing countries, you can find the list of them yourself under England rule when the Union Jack covered the globe . I am aware of the act of union what is your point ? you want to shift focus to it ? this debate was not about " Act of Union " but rather a potential UK without Scotland ,life for both England and the independent people of Scotland if she choose self government. I am stating that Scotland deserves the same consideration to govern herself just as well as India for example now does and the rest of the former Empire do. History speaks the truth hate , gets you nowhere.

At the next revision of E.U. treaties in 2015, a new clause could be added to establish the formal category of an associate state of the European Union. Indeed there is all ready a precedent in E.U. law for associate membership such as Greece which went on to become a full E.E.C. member and modern day Turkey which is a present day E.U.associate member. Associate membership would require fidelity to the values and principles of the Union. However, it would not require adherence to all the political objectives of the Union, which include joining the euro. Nor would associate membership confer the duty to engage in all the activities of the EU.

And I know there are political differences with Londo every now and then. But you share so much history together. You jointly fought, suffred and were victorious in 2 world wars. Do you want that ignore that, trow this common history down the drain? As 1 country you are much better capabale to face the economic and security challenges that todays world poses to you.

The same reason the Netherlands doesn't want to be part of a bigger country. That "common history" will still be there if Scotland and England exist as two independent neighbours in the future. If you don't understand why Scottish independence supporters want to be independent from the UK then you don't know enough about the issue. And no, we are not all seen as "Brits" outside Scotland. Very often when people from outside Scotland talk about "British people" they mean English people exclusively. Scotland has its own national identity.
Would you like it if Scottish people stuck their noses into Dutch constitutional issues? When the average Scottish person knows nothing about Dutch history and culture? No, I think Dutch people wouldn't be very happy if Scottish people instructed you to make decisions that would make your country worse off, when they know nothing about your country. Scottish people don't get involved in matters that are only for Dutch people to decide, so it would be nice if you as a Dutchman showed Scottish people the same courtesy.

The media as biased and fearful as it is now. The media are little EUers and little UKers with regards to Scotland referendum. English are more libertarian, trade orientated and adventurous than the rest of the union. That being unleashed would probably lead to a stronger England. I like the union but if the others want independence then that is their choice and I see no problems for England, although London would suffer as we would vote more definitively as one, which would not allow the London-centric view to exist. The London -centric view exists because there is so much diversity in political views across the union that no single view exists, leading to the London ruling elite greater freedom.

The United Kingdom is better UNITED. We are stronger together and have one of the longest histories of any nation in the world. A great history that while a large part of it has been bloody, it has also has great achievement’s and has brought us to the developed, free nation we are now. Together we are an important partner with NATO, a crucial part of the Global 20 (G20) and Global 8 (G8) and a great global power. If we are broken up we would be a laughing stock of a nation among other nations. Not only would we be a smaller nation but no doubt will affect us economically and military in terms of size and presence. Russia is gaining land, Argentina is on our case over the Falkland’s and we live in an uncertain world where terrorism is rife.
In the UK unemployment rate of the economically active population is 6.9% and the UK economy has grown by 0.8% in the first quarter of 2014! Not to mention the 3.1% growth in 2013...Its stance has been bolstered by falling inflation, which dropped to 1.6% last month, its lowest rate in more than four years!
I ask my fellow scots who want to vote for an Independent Scotland…. Are you really that hard up? Are you really suffering as result of being part of the UK? Don’t you think that together we can make this nation better and stronger? Scotland will be in great difficultly when it is not part of UK and the EU. EU clearly said they will need to reapply and get all the EU members to vote yes. Spain will not vote yes as they will want to make an example of Scotland. If they make it hard as possible for Scotland then it will help them keep their country together. If they make it easy for Scotland then Catalan will be empowered and will go for independence even more. The Scots say that independence doesn't effect Spain but it does as Catalan will look at Scotland as an example of success or failure.

The head of the EU few weeks ago said clearly some countries like Spain will most likely Vito Scotland from joining to EU. So it will be really hard or impossible for Scotland to join. This was said by the head of the EU (no me). Watch the news before you comment. I made my comment as I do watch the news. Spain would rather have their country together in one piece than care about fishing rights. Spain knows an independent Scotland will be bad for their country as it will be much harder to control Catalan. That is why they will have to make it hard. I am giving facts so what are you giving.

The UK will recover from Scotland leaving, Scotland will not (The UK may even be better off tbh). Lets not forget that Scotland only joined the UK in the first place to avoid going bankrupt. They were bailed out.
Also, why leave the UK only to then be the bitch of the EU, which is far worse? If you want independence, stay in the UK and vote to leave the EU.

Sayayayaaa The vast majority of normal English people that work in Sainsbury's and spend their evenings tuned to planet Janet watching Coronation street do not give a single flying piece of shit and the upcoming referendum. In fact the majority probably don't even know a referendum is coming up.

What do people think about the idea the at an independent Scotland could become an associate member of the E.U. ie Scotland would not be a full member of the E.U., Scotland would not use the Euro, but the E.U. would back up Scotland's economy if Scotland got into financial trouble. And Scotland would except and be bound by the E.U. Courts and treaties on thing's like health & safety and special conversion areas ect?

Scotland could Establish a "Scottish Krone" and like Denmark peg it to the Euro like Denmark and Scotland could then join the Nordic Council, the Council of Europe, the European Free Trade Association and the the European Economic Area and still trade with the E.U. like Norway, Iceland and Switzerland.
