    Favourite line, "enough to get a good tip at the end", made me laugh out loud! I must hang dry 80% of my wardrobe, that's why I hate laundry day in the winter, clothes hanging everywhere. Love the summer when I can hang things on the line. Thanks for another great video.

    Thanks for the tips Alyssa. It's true we all wash our clothes too much! My number one tip for wardrobe maintenance is choose natural fibers whenever you can. Most are naturally antibacterial which means they do not smell after wearing and do not need washed as often as synthetics. Naturals are more comfortable to wear as they are breathable and all natural fibers are biodegradable. When hand washing woolens and cashmere I would add one more step. When you have squeezed out as much water as you can by hand, place the sweater on a towel , roll up like a swiss roll and press hard to remove more water. Unroll then place your sweater on a dry towel , block to shape ( as you have shown) and allow to dry. This extra step speeds up the drying time .

    There is a certain way to hang sweaters so they don't stretch. Fold flat lengthwise, place the hanger, base of hook at the arm pit of the sweater, fold over sleeve and body of the sweater. It won't stretch or slide off the hanger. Which is great if you have more hanging space than space for folded. I hang my clothes up right away after wearing. Pants I hang at the waist, full length, flat front to air out and get rid of any wrinkles. Also I spray my perfume on before I put my clothes or jewelry. Perfume can break down and even stain fibers, it's been known to do the same to jewelry, metal, pearls.

    in order to kill the bacteria that make our clothes stink the most gentle yet effective solution is a steamer. if its for a household it doesnt need to be big and expensive like the ones they use at big stores and you can do a bunch of other chores with it.

  • @brifren2
    @brifren2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Excellent! I've always done all of this. We don't have a dryer, and don't want one... It shocks me when I hear so many people automatically wash every single item they wore in just a day. If it's a baby or child that gets dirty, or if daily occupations cause dirt, stains and sweat, it makes sense. But it's a pity to systematically wash garments just because they were worn once or a few times, if they are not dirty or smelly. Airing them well is enough, or just cleaning a little stain. When we take good care of our clothes, especially our favourite and all time classics, they can last for years and even decades, and they will take care of us too :) (less money and energy wasted, less consumption, less waste and pollution, and they keep us beautiful, comfortable and warm or cool for a long time).

    Your hair is looking particularly ravishing today, Alyssa. I agree with all those techniques. I live in Australia and we have plenty of sunshine so I don't even own a dryer. I have a front loader washing machine and only have cold wash. The hot water hose is not even connected!! I wash my woollens exactly the same way you do and lay them on the towel to dry!! I do love natural fibres so knowing how to care for the garments I have invested in is an integral part of ensuring their longevity.

      Heather Valentine Agree as a fellow Australian I cringe at the intense use of dryers - we do have one but it is in our shed and only use it sparingly. Makes such a difference to clothing longevity.

    • @heathervalentine8222
      @heathervalentine8222 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@loub1733 Yay, a fellow Aussie!! I have never owned a dryer!! Even in winter I can get my clothes dried without it. I have a portable clothes line that I bring out in winter and place it under my patio. I hang items there even when it's raining. If they are taking a really long time due to slow evaporation rates when it's super cold, I place them on the rails attached to my oil radiator heater.
      I do understand this may not be as easy in super cold countries like Canada, but these strategies can reduce the use of tumble dryers. They are shocking for knocking the stuffing out of the clothes. Look at the lint filter in a dryer after just one use. All that lint is comprised of the fibres that used to be in your clothes, sheets, towels etc!! I do feel as though there is an accepted norm about the use of tumble dryers when a little bit of creativity can make use of sunshine and wind to dry clothes. I notice from American and English movies, that is just the way clothes are washed - from the top loader (which treat the clothes terribly, battering them about inside that machine) to the tumble dryer!! No wonder consumers are on such a buying treadmill!! And no wonder that consumers don't want to invest in higher quality fibres. If that is the way they treat their clothes, they can't envisage any other way.
      I buy clothes made of natural fibres - wool, linen, cotton and some silk - so I want to care for them as best I can. A lot of my clothes are thrifted and been around for years already. I want to be the best custodian of them that I can. I make sure that on my watch, these clothes continue to look their best.
      Wow!! I wrote a lot!! I am passionate about this😀

      i am from Greece and we also don't need dryers for the most of the year but for the colder months or a rainy day i use a portable hanger and a dehumidifier. it realy works if the space is not too big for your machine and the clothes stay soft and smell great.

    Great video, but I’d like to add that silk items shouldn’t soaked more than 5 minutes. I rarely use my tumble dryer, I hang everything in my laundry room with a fan going, and a window open (I live in California and I know not everyone can leave a window open, but do try the fan-it speeds up drying and gives garments some movement that reduces wrinkles).

    Great tips Alyssa! Your hair looks beautiful. 😁 I watched the entire video as I was doing my makeup so I hope I'm not repeating something that you did or said. But, something that I do to help sweaters dry faster is to roll them in a towel after squeezing the water out of them. Lay them on the towel, roll completely and squeeze. It takes a vast amount of water out of the garment and they dry a lot faster. I do that with all of my sweaters that tend to weigh 20 lb when full of water. LOL Thank you so much for your videos. I enjoy them and learn a lot of great tips from you. Stay safe and well.

      That's how my mother taught me as well, Bonnie. Gently squeeze the water out of sweaters, and then spread out on a dry towel, careful to re-shape and block. I spread mine out on a countertop, however, not on the floor! I have a multi-line clothes line in the laundry room and hang all our clothes to dry. A small room dehumidifier helps a lot, and has a timer so it doesn't run unnecessarily.

    Alyssa, when I tell you how I do my gorgeous cashmeres you will faint. First of all, I try to buy cashmeres 1-2 sizes bigger or sometimes I get men’s small sweaters at Costco. I’m petite so there’s quite a size difference, men’s sweaters are less expensive as well. I then put them individually in a LARGE mesh laundry bag and secure it. The first time I don’t use a mild laundry soap just hot water. Let them go thru the cycle then leave it I the bag and put it in the dryer. Dry till almost dry then take out and dry folded once over a hanger till totally dry. I have some cashmeres that are 20 years old and they look like new. The washing in hot water and twisting action of the washer shrinks the item and then the drying action continues to shrink the sleeves and length of sweater but now it is much much fluffier and gorgeous! It now fits my 5’4” body and is soft and beautiful. Sometime try this on a thrifted sweater maybe if you are fearful. I love my cashmeres and wear them like most people wear sweatshirts only I think I look better, ha. You can always get a good deal on men’s basic Vneck or crew necks.

      Gayle, I love this story. I’ll be looking for some extra large men’s sweaters to give this a try. I am 6 foot 1 so women’s sweaters are always too short and I never get to cuff anything. After of the initial sizing do you continue to wash them the same way? Only with soap?

    • @gayleritter1199
      @gayleritter1199 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      JL Janice LaVergne I don’t know your size but it will only shrink a couple of sizes so be careful you don’t get the sweater too big.

    I'm one of those who resisted washing my wool because decades ago a cold hand wash still shrunk one. A few weeks ago I did wash an old one and no problem! Cashmere though scares me. It doesn't mat down??
    I'm not sure if it was you or someone else but I learned about a year ago that merino wool doesn't pill (that explained why some of my sweaters didn't pill) and blends pill terribly. So I now vow no blends and merino and cashmere only (I hate how those burgers pill!).
    Thanks for sharing your shavers. Wondered what you used.

    • @AlyssaBeltempo
      @AlyssaBeltempo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      so far my cashmere hasn't - when you first put it in the water it's a bit scary but I find once it dries and you give it a good steam it's good as new! True about merino but i also think it depends on the fibres and YES - I forgot to mention about blends pilling - if you do have to go for a blend I would recommend at least 70% of one type of fibre to help reduce pilling but staying away from them altogether is even better! Thank you for watching - I've linked to shavers and detergents in the description box :) xx

      so interesting - synthetic fibres hold onto odours longer than natural ones so for the performance wear that is technical and synthetic I do wash them more often than regular daily wear clothes. I haven't found another way around this unfortunately except I try to be selective with which tops I wear for which types of workouts (ie; synthetic for less intense so I can wear them more) vs. natural for running ... Personally, I have never washed silks or cashmere by hand and I have plenty of both items. I just don't have the time or the inclination (being a very lazy person) to do so. If it can't go in the washing machine, then I don't risk buying it. I however, did choose very carefully my washing machine: I wash jeans, silks and woolens all on the 30 degrees / 20 minute cycle. I haven't 'lost' an item yet and have been doing this for years. I have however had a horrible experience with my pilling machine when I was in a hurry. Said item wasn't laying completely flat and I was rushing....bad move! I cut a chunk out of my favourite sweater!! As a result, I now lay everything that I pill flat on the ironing board, placing a chopping board inside the garment on the area that needs de-pilling. I pull the garment tightly around the chopping board and this stretches it (don't pull it too tightly though) and it works like a dream. I do it section by section. It takes a bit longer, but it lasts longer. Over-pilling wears the garment out if done too often and will become threadbare in no time. Gee...that was an essay......sorry about that Alyssa!! 😀

    Thanks Alyssa, another great video. I love the tip about lining up seams when drying knitwear. I need to get hold of some Eucalan; that looks much easier than my handwash liquid. I was surprised at the denim washing statistic... I only really wash mine if they look dirty 😳

    I have a really chunky cashmere sweater, with lots of braiding in the knit design and it has some pilling. I assume the sweater comb is safer than the electric sweater shaver... right? Either way, I'm nervous.

      Hi there! Yes, still in lockdown .. I hope you are doing well and are healthy! I understand - it's hard to pay attention to much when the world is in such a weird state. Hopefully the nice weather means you get to go outside more! :) Wishing you a wonderful week xx

    My Uniqluo linen cardigan streatched like crazy after I hung dry it (before I even wore it). Not sure if it’s because the cardigan was made made of low-quality linen? I love that cardigan but that experience really freaked me out. So I never hang dry my linen clothing since then.

    Hi Alyssa! Thank you for this very helpful video. Do you handwash « dry clean only » garment, like silk shirt, cashmere or other wool blends sweaters?

    • @AlyssaBeltempo
      @AlyssaBeltempo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sylvie! Yes! The cardigan I use in the video is cashmere and I also use the same technique for my silks :)

    Thank you for the “adult supervision” Alyssa. Learning about the nature of fibers in fabric will be helpful. I’ve had a question I’ve wanted to ask the community for the longest time. It seem to me that there must be some sort of “sweater dryer” for those of us whose homes are so cool in the winter that wool and cotton sweaters take days to dry. Because of high energy costs the thermostat is set to 66 to 68 during the day and off at night. After your presentation i’ve got a sad feeling there is no such appliance?

    Love to know if you have any tips for dealing with clothing moths. We seemed to have gotten rid of them but I'm so afraid we'll get them again and I'll loose wool or cashmere. I clean my clothing like you suggest and had to resort to dry cleaning once when we discovered a bad moth infestation. Hanging in direct sunlight seems to really help as a prevention but any tips would be deeply appreciated.

    With wools, moths LOVE undisutrbed wool so even in the warmer months when they are less likely to be worn, at least once a month, shift them around, refold, something so thise darn moths are messed with. Make sure they are clean before storing.

    There is an ethical Welsh jeans company - huit denim, that has, challenged people to go like 6 months without washing and to buy darker denim as it produces less pollution in the manufacturing process

    What brand of steamer is that? Very compact! I never wring and I air dry anything with elasticity. I heard silk needs to be kept away from sunlight as much as possible ... any truth to this? Thanks for the 2 months.

    When you live in super humid weather like Indonesia, it’s impossible to just air dry your garments, unless you want to keep your family away from you forever.

    Hi, very helpful but have you been brave enough to hand wash your everlane silk shirt? This dryclean business has been putting me off making the purchase

    • @AlyssaBeltempo

      My silk shirt isn't everlane sadly - it is a very old one but I always link to the everlane one because it looks almost identical! I have washed silk the same way though with no issues ... :) I hope this helps!

    I like to dry clean items a few times then move to hand wash. I prefer washing to dry cleaning and think clothes are cleaner that way.

    I find that I spend a huge amount of water when I wash garments at home. I have extra sensitive skin, so I am horrified that the garment will still have soap, and make me have an outbreak. I guess it's just me.
