Should You Play WITH or WITHOUT Sound Effects?

  • Should you play with Sound Effects (SFX, SE, Hitsounds) ON or OFF?
    This video will walk you through why you would want to play with them on or off in Project SEKAI! This can also apply to other games as well.
    I will be making a Full Combo/All Perfect Guide, but I needed to make this video because if I just made one Full Combo/All Perfect video it would take me over an hour to explain everything probably. That time will probably come eventually, but not now.
    This ties in together with Offsets and Note Speed, so that video will probably be next. I hope you found this video useful.
    Players mentioned in the video:
    Mita Kousuke: • ヤミナベ"ALL PERFECT"の瞬間 3... (clipped)
    Enamel Man: • 【プロセカ】ヤミナベ!!!! [MASTER...

    You said that tapping early when having SE on is because you’re listening to the SE, which has audio latency, instead of the music. What confuses me is doesn’t the SE and music have the same latency? Why would you tap early then if you’re listening to the same timing? Also if it was due to latency wouldn’t you be tapping late, not early?

    • @biriamu
      @biriamu  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      You might actually be right. I did a bit of testing and tick notes (in holds and sliders) seem to line up perfectly, even with bluetooth audio. Therefore SE and the music should share the same audio latency. Thanks for bringing this up.
      With that said, audio latency still plays a role here. The "tapping to the music" (3:05) example kinda puts that into perspective, as when I did tap to the music, I ended up with a lot of late greats, indicating that the audio was in fact slightly behind. Turning off SE and offsetting backwards helps in mitigating the audio latency.
      The case about tapping early (MGPD gameplay 2:29) might be more of a touch input latency issue, meaning that after your initial tap, the tap would register ever so slightly late, which gives off the impression that there is an audio latency issue going on (based on my initial conclusion). The impact this has on the player will depend on their playstyle, but for most, I think it is largely a non-issue.
      Hopefully this answered some of your questions.
      This comment highlighted some points that I had trouble explaining for the video, so I will be pinning it. Again, thanks for bringing these concerns up.

    good video
    5:09 with hitsounds, songs sometimes become inaudible at higher diff charts (hold note tick spam, catch/drag note spam, etc)
    6:12 when playing trills and streams, it's also better to accent certain notes to keep track of the downbeat
    accenting is basically just tapping (usually once every 4 or 8 notes) slightly harder than everything else
    if you turn off hitsounds, you can hear and feel the note that you are accenting, instead of getting hitsounds that are the same volume for every note

    in my experience, i think the biggest weakness in playing with sfx is that doing ghost taps is not really possible unless you're playing with a high volume, but sfx help you get to a correct rhythm better as they are a lot less ignorable than real finger taps.

    Honestly, I mostly play with SE off, mostly because I'm more of an audio listener. But I also sometimes crank that SE volume up to 60, and maybe even turn off the bgm volume, just so I can hear asmr, and what it sounds like without music
    (My speed is like 10.4 [10.40-10.45 on jp], sometimes I'll try out eleven and my offset is -1.5, and I use wireless headphones :])

  • @Pluvillion
    @Pluvillion 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Your fingers being the "hitsound" is one thing I always take note as someone who plays a lot of rhythm games. The delay is diminished because you're tapping to the beat rather than relying on the game's latency. Only Project Diva is the only rhythm game I play with hitsounds as the buttons aren't necessarily fast nor complicated enough for me to hear 32 buttons in a single bar.

    I turn off SE cause not only is audio synced with the music but I’m also able to associate haptics (touch) to the music. The only thing I have to worry about is input lag, which is the reason for the negative timing of the notes.

  • @tydude
    @tydude 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There are three different latencies: audio, display, and input latency, so it can be confusing to account for each! Most rhythm games have audio offset which accounts for the three latencies only if you turn off hitsounds. Rhythm games that use key sounds (unique sounds for each note like in IIDX) have no audio offset but instead have visual offset to account for display latency (these games require more visual reaction in my experience). I don’t know if there are any rhythm games that have input offset, so best way to reduce input latency is use good hardware like iPad Pro or 8000hz keyboard or mouse

    As someone who has over 100 sekai master aps that range up to 31s in difficulty and plays Bandori with no hit sounds my accuracy for sekai TANKS when I don’t use hitsounds. The should you or shouldn’t you use hitsounds debate is really more up to personal preference. My main issue with not using hitsounds is that I can not stand the sound of the taps on the screen while I’m playing. In Bandori a game where I DO get much better accuracy from having hitsounds off I usually either have to play with headphones or loud music so I can’t hear my tapping or else it’ll tank my accuracy too,,
    Great video though just wanted to put out there that hit sounds are really more of a preference thing

    hmm interesting. i’m an audio player i guess? but if i turn audio off i do perfectly fine, sometimes better. i’ve played with and without tap sounds before. i’ve also played without music and only tap sounds. i haven’t noticed any of those dramatically changing my accuracy. i play on 11.0 and barely have my latency changed. (it’s perfectly set btw, no issues with it.)
    i enjoy no tap sounds bc it’s a music focus. but i enjoy tap sounds bc they match well with the music. and playing without music just feels really good sometimes lol. i do that if i’m trying to fc a song and am messing up on certain parts.
    my sound effects are at like a 10 volume lol. anything else is distracting.

    Being an experienced a dance of fire and ice player, adofai hitsound and song always line up and when I tried out pjsk due to some friend requests, I immedietely turned off the sound effects and used my finger taps to properly adjust my offset xd, since I developed a pretty good sense of rhythm from playing adofai for a long period and the offsync with the hitsound and song really ticks me off, and this seems to be the case for almost all mobile rhythm game. Even for Muse Dash PC edition. I'd say if you have a really good sense of rhythm for music when tapping along side it, disable sound effects since it will just messes up your rhythm with music.
