Thank you so much for including me in this, Jake! I’m honoured to be in such great company. You rock and do such a great job putting collaborations like this together.
I think all you people are so lucky and obviously very kind to have the opportunity to raise and care for these birds. I live in Northern Ireland and preform vermin control for some chicken farmers (mainly rats) and I am envious of the country lifestyle as I live in a city (Belfast) good luck with all that you do and I wish you all future success. ATB... Billy.
I loved this collaboration video. It was great to see the different varieties that y'all have and your reasons for loving your birds. Thank you for sharing! I'm just starting to really get into chicken keeping and definitely have some wishlist birds to look more into.
I don't know if you read this posted months after the video. I just want to say that I love your "style" of videos, Jake & Becky. You have a calm, gentle demeanor and you guys treat your animals right. You have a very happy farm and you're raising your boys in a beautiful environment. I like your great mix of music. Keep up the good work! I think #3 is going to be pink! God bless you❤️😊
Wow! This is the first time someone in my favorite "Homesteading" videos has replied! I follow all the farming/homestead familes and I always come back to White House on the Hill. You guys have such a talent for posting videos that keep a person interested to the final good-bye! You're honest about the ups and downs of farming and becoming self-sufficient. I love how the whole family is involved. Thank you for sharing! God bless your family and White House on the Hill❤️
Hello, White House on the hill Jake and Becky. You inspired me and my husband to make a small farm ourselves. Your videos are very helpful and we learn a lot from them. Thank you :)
Cog Hill Farm -The Dancing Farmer. Jason you answered a good question that I was going to ask you buddy. Luke beat me to it I see. LOL. I do like the salmon faverolle they are exactly as you described.
the Cog Hill Farm guy had me cracking up the entire time!!! He was describing the chicken but I feel like he was describing himself...what a sweet soul, Im gonna have to check them out as well. Made my day.
Great info. My Welsummers are my sweetest. White Leghorns are the flightiest but big layers, and my one and only Wyandotte was the best momma ever. Thanks for another great video.
I'm so happy I'm not the only mad Americauna fan, aaaaa~!! The first time we had chickens, I claimed one of the babies as my own and named her "Happy." She was a runt of an Americauna hen and she was my bEST FRIEND!! It's been a few years since we lost our flock, and this Summer I really want to keep one again, but maybe smaller and more manageable this time. I really appreciate you guys offering your advice on breeds! As of now, I'm definitely getting Americaunas again.
Red Star (cross between a New Hampshire Red and a Rhode Island Red) are prolific layers and they're mild-mannered chickens. We've had trouble with Barred Rock picking on each other.
Our main rooster is a white chantecler. I love it because of the cushion comb. He never gets frostbite (got down to -15 here this year, but have gotten colder in the past). I'm mixing him with my others to develop a very cold hardy dual purpose flock.
I have a lot of chicken breeds but my favorite is the Cochin. Blue Cochins are my favorite color. They are a very friendly sweet bird. Not a good egg breed but they are so sweet and are good broody hens.
I get my first chicks next week. They are Jubilee Orpington and Swedish Flower. In May I have Lavender & Blue Orpington, Barnvelder, Blue Favaucana and Easter Egger chicks arriving. All Hens, as I can’t have a Rooster in my area. I chose these breeds for their appearance, friendliness, egg color and they are less apt to go broody.
i only have 6 birds and one of those is a rooster. but i have 1 wellsummer who i took over ownership of 3 years ago now. shes the only one of my original flock left but such a cool hen. i wanted large birds as i have hunting dogs so didnt want small fast running flitting birds that would take their attention. i also have 3 of the average hybrid warrens. and i have a hen and a rooster black polish who i got from a neighbour. i didnt want a rooster but they were unsexed chicks when i got them. and as fate would have it i got one. the hen is pretty cool. instead of a comb her comb is a princess style coronet. he is very handsome too jet black but with metallic greens, purples and terracotta hues.
Great video Jake! Henry loves the Americana ( spelling). He loves the egg color. We only have 2 of those left we had 4. We bought them because we wanted to add another color to our egg collection.
Awesome, someone else who loves favorelles! We adore ours. We are currently raising some prairie bluebell eggers because we wanted to see what this new breed was all about! From what is told to us they seem like the perfect chickens for our farm. ☺️
I have 2 hens a buff orpington/ Berham mix and a Phoenix/ Old English game mix both rescued. I am am planning on breeding for both eggs and meat. Also to help out friend that lose there birds. I have only 2 hens rite now but soon I hope to have a few more. My girls just spent a night in a pen with a rooster. Lol you all have very nice familys and animals.
My favorite has to be French Black Copper Marans. They’re super sweet and lay beautiful, huge eggs. And they lay pretty well. They are also rarer in the US and I like being able to help them out. I also love favorelles, but haven’t been able to find any around me.
That is the2nd worsts 1st australorp.the leghorn is no.1 in my part of the world. But this is your worsts, now barred work if I can find a strain . Thanks
My favorites right now are my bantams, especially the Silver laced Sebright. Medium on the friendliness scale, pretty high on the eggs laid to feed consumed ratio because they are so small. Sometimes people just look at egg size but I've found a lot of large breed chickens consume a lot of feed because they are more of a dual purpose breed. We do not butcher our chickens so for my money im looking for chickens that eat less and lay a lot of eggs.
I love my barred rock the most. They are amazing. At first they weren’t cause they were bullies but as they got bigger they got more calmer and nicer. I have hen name Bertha she’s barn yard mix I think she’s mostly black star and she is my favorite for personality.
Excellent timing Jake. We are currently researching breeds to get our chickens. We’d like to get a dual purpose bird with high egg production and semi friendly. Not necessarily sit in your lap friendly but not afraid of us either. Thank you for the help. God Bless ~Lisa
Excellent video Interesting to hear the different perspectives. I had several breeds before and nearly 200 chickens, I am trying to get into these again after having been out about 15 years. I am struggling on deciding. Leaning towards heritage breeds
I have learned a lot from different presentation on video and I hope to improve on how to manage my small flock.l would love you teach us more on vaccination .
i have 1 barred rock 1 ameraucana 1 golden laced wadontte *i dont know how to spell that* 1 coocoo maran 1 welsummer 1 buff orhington i recommend the buff orhington it is the most friendly breed i have and if you have a rooster it is a great mother also i have two other breeds i forgot the name of
i have 6 different chicken breads and i got 13 chickens i have 1 Silver laced Wyandotte and 1 black sex link sorry if i spelled that wrong anyways and 7 brahmas 2 brown leg horns 1 bantam and last is the ameraucana and he is so pretty i love him
I live in California and we get some high temperatures. I want some quiet hens, just 3 or 4. I live in e neighborhood so no boosters. I want decent layers, and I prefer brown or colored eggs. What do you all suggest? Great information. Thank you.
+Patrice's Projects - so your standard breeds - barred rock, australorp, Rhode Island red, buff orpingtons - will take care of you for the brown eggs in just about any climate. And Ameraucana/easter Eggers for your colored eggs. Quiet vs loud - people have different experiences with all of those breeds. Definitely depends on their genetics. Our Ameraucanas are really sweet and quiet, and our Barred Rocks are pretty noisy, but I'm sure it's totally opposite at some other farms. Hope that helps!
Great info! Is there a breed that is hearty to very hot summer climates? Ideas for keeping chickens (&/or ducks) in hot summers (up to 119° in drought conditions in the summer)? I imagine I'd need a way to cool them on very hot days.. Are shade, blocks of ice & feeding them fruit scraps enough to keep them cool enough on very hot days? At what temperature would you need to have shade available? Ice? Or another cooling method? Other ideas for keeping them cool during very hot spells in the summer? Is there a first aid kit a chicken owner should keep around for them? A method for clipping wings so they don't go into neighbor's yards? How much space should each chicken have ideally in and out of a bedding area? (Free range) Is there a way to keep them for a few days when away, without a bird sitter? Thanks for the very informative channel! I've thought about raising some chickens, have read a lot, yet am not 100% sure I'm ready to do this yet. Still gathering information to make a dedcision as to whether or not to take on chickens. A first aid, health video on chickens, as well as a video on building tractors and coops + electric & other fencing would be awesome! How high does a fence need to be? How is the best way to keep predator birds from hurting chickens? How do you pick up a chicken properly to not harm them & not be harmed? I held onto a wild turkey once & got a deep scratch/gouge in my arm that took a long time to heal! Can you pick up an emu? A duck? If so how? Thank you! Loving your channel! I'll look to see if you have links to the other farms in this video! If no links, can you add them? I'd like to get a few chickens, maybe a couple of turkeys for eggs & meat. I like the dark eggs and meat. I love the look of those black chickend with black skin and organs. Are there chickens that would be harder to be successful raising than others? Ducks? Turkeys? Geese? It would be great to raise some from eggs, to experience them growing up! Grandchildren would learn a lot too! (AND I have kitties that would need to learn not to hunt birds!) Are the dark orange, stronger tasting yolks from the breed, or from just what they eat? I bought eggs years ago from some people that had their own chickens that had very dark, orange yolks & brown shells. I haven't found any like that since, so would love to raise some of my own! I know in some areas, you cannot have a rooster, because of noise concerns, city regulations, apparently, yet I know some people have them. If I buy eggs, are there any suggestions on what to do with roosters that hatch, other than culling them? I want to get a breed with the dark, tasty yolked eggs (outer color of shells isn't really important), a quieter, calm, easy to handle breed, a good layer that's also good for meat, gets along with cats & dogs and is a real looker, as far as the birds themselves. A chicken As for looks, I really like colorful birds , especially like those mandarin ducks! I would absolutely LOVE to raise some of those, as long as they aren't too difficult to raise! Raising a threatened breed to bring up their numbers would be great too! I've had some parakeets (ring neck parakeets, true parakeets, not budgies). They are far bigger than budgies, yet not quite as big as a parrot, so i have a little bit of bird care experience, yet would be pretty much starting over, or from chicken scratch! I'm planning to film this experience from the beginning, including buying the eggs, incubator, tractors, watering & feed containers, feed, everything, and calling the show "Chicken Scratch", yet won't be limited to only chickens. I won't have to act like a newbie, as I will absolutely be new to this! I believe that our small farmers have THE most important jobs anywhere, as without food, we wouldn't be here! When I hear children's answers, and even more alarmkng, the parents sometimes, anseeting where chicken nuggets come from, and the best answer is "the freezer", and some parents don't know, I believe it's time to educate people! A few parents literally though that chicken nuggets literally were created in a laboratory with chemicals! I thought that was a joke, and asked several times! One woman really lost it when she was told that her son's chicken nuggets from McDonald's were made from chicken meat, from a chicken ... she really lost it! Others in the group were clearly hesring this for thr first time! These people had lived in thr city, as were their parents... Some people have really lost touch with where their foods come from! Crazy, but true! Some get all wrapped up in things they read, and are totally naive as to where their food comes ftom, being totally dependant should their ever be a major emergency, such as an earthquake, volcano, major storm, etc. For their own safety, and those around them too, people need to know how to eat, what to eat, and need to know how to properly clean a chicken, duck, etc. (As well as what parts to eat, which to toss, which to make into gelatin, etc.!) I've yet to see a gelatin video yet, yet I'm sure someone has something on videp on TH-cam spmewhere on that subject! I'm planning to make the video series "Chicken Scratch", and have info on producing your own food, how to be self-sufficient in our world, starting from scratch, then building a self-sufficient yard with as few, if any, factory-made items... Things like perhaps how to take your cat's or dog's fur, and make a sweater from it via felting, ot creating yarn to knit or crochet a sweater... perhaps making stronger yarn with flaxseed plant stems, and enjoy the pretty flowers in thr process! Making palm tree fiber yarns too, dyes from plants, and so much more! Thanks for reading all of this! I'd LOVE to see answers to these questions, especially thr hest issues for chickens in hot areas, as this is a serious issue in hot, desert areas! Glad to find your channel! Very helpful info for us newbies, and to those who have been at this chicken business & home farming, small farms, for a while! Keep up the GREAT work! So awesome to include thr childrrn as a art of the farming experience! The memoroes they will have as adults eill be priceless! These videos will help other children be better at working with animals as well! I know spme city kids esprcially, are fearful of animals. When yhru see good examples of other children handling thr birds, and not being afraid, they will be MUCH bettet at handling animals too!!! This might be evety day stuff for your children, but to other children, this might br s life saving series of videos some day years from now! Thanks so much for these videos!!!I hope to have "Chicken Scratch" up starting next spring, 2020!
I’m thankful for this video. I randomly started watching your channel and am a huge fan of all of your animals. I’m getting started in chickens and have favorites, but it’s hard to go down to the top 2-3. I will most likely get the Swedish Flower Hen as one kind. I also love Orphingtons and Faveroles. I also can not discount the Ameraucaunas. I’d love some of the more rarer ones too but I think I’ll wait on those until I’m more steadily into having them and comfortable. Our main purpose for the chickens would be eggs, plus, I just wanted some and now with almost an acre, we can have some. I’d love to raise some and be kind of a local area person who has chicks or fertilized eggs for sale in my area, instead of just Tractor Supply or ordering. I would like to aim toward that but we’ll see how it goes. Any suggestions for someone new starting out?
I had a large flock of Dominique, I loved the hens but the roosters were a nightmare! They are large and mean! The roosters would spur you every time you went in the pen and they were always fighting. I had over 40 hens so I needed 4 or 5 roosters but I could not keep any, even when I culled them down to just 1 rooster, I got attacked every time I collected eggs. I had a toddler at the time so I could not risk keeping even one.
White House on the Hill I am interested in Cog Hill Farms Chicken. I need one that is heat tolerant. Not much snow in Fl. RIR do really well here, as does Barred Rocks, Sex Links & Wyandottes. I want a very diverse & mixed flock. I am currently searching for Easter Eggers.
I'm getting salmon favouroulls (probably not spelled right) they are at rural king. I might get the Americana now too!! I want the sweetest chickens and for eggs and to be able to eat if we wanted! We are also in town our hens need to be quieter. It gets really cold also! Thank you for the info!!
Be careful when looking for Ameraucanas, the spelling is important. If there is an ( i ) like you spelled it then what you are getting is an Easter Egger. I have seen a lot of feed stores sell them and they are not Ameraucanas. Not being a stickler about spelling but it is a trick used by hatcheries that send their chicks out to smaller feed stores. Be aware and buy from reputable places and breeders!
Can you recommend any books or web sites that give valid and reliable information to research different breeds? I am a retired science teacher. I have a deep need to research! LOL!
+When In Idaho - I realized I hadn't juggled in an episode since a really early on one - check this one out: th-cam.com/video/EzFUb9nDGsU/w-d-xo.html - I'll take the blame for your chicken fever 😀
outstading video and subject.i have a guestion, just how much feed do you go thru a month? must be well over a ton.i like my blue lace wyandottes and buff orphingtons.
We have a farm in North Carolina and I was researching new breeds for our flock. Came across the Barnevelder. Do you guys recommend that? I notice you don't have that breed!
I NEED TO BUY CHICKEN FOR MY HEN HOUSE ON A BIG BACK YARD.. HOW IS THE SYSTEM OR ORDERING A LAYING EGGS =CHICKES. I FAVOR THE EASTERN EGG LAYER CHEKCENS. BLACK ONES BORD ROCK COUPLD OF EACH PLEASE ADVISED

Beautiful Chantecler! I have a trio of partridge too and will start collecting eggs for incubating soon!
That's awesome. I just ordered in some eggs from a breeder a few provinces away - hoping to have some new blood in my flock! I'm very excited!
I enjoyed your segment! Great job! :)
Thank you!
I love how they all have different likes of chickens so that the viewers can get a variety of the different chickens💜
+Kenna Andersen - definitely! That worked out well that we all had quite a variety.
I love how your name is flipping kids lol
I have a variety of chickens..1 barred rock. She's so sweet and yes she's very vocal.
I think all you people are so lucky and obviously very kind to have the opportunity to raise and care for these birds. +Heather Nettrour - we're big fans of our Cochins, wonderful broody hens. I've heard a few other channels say Cochins were there favorite as well.

+Michael Stevens - great choices! I've never seen jubilee orpingtons up close, those look sweet! Good luck!
Just came across your channel researching chickens breeds I'm also in NH as well.

+Laura-ann Stewart - Bredas... good one!
I love them lol there awsome for up north here but not popular I think because they lay a white egg. Around here people like colorful or brown eggs .
+Laura-ann Stewart - yes, we resisted white eggs ever since getting chickens, might be time to add that color back in some time
Lol. Little Buddy dropping the truth bomb. 😊
+Lesley Pettit - ha, no doubt! Who likes anything that poops a lot?
Our favorite chicken breed is the Brahma. Great duel purpose chicken.
Thanks guys it was very informative..😉

+Lori Lumax - hmmm, a good experiment to try sometime
Excellent episode! We have a Comet, Easter Egger, Barred Rock and Buff Orphington. They are still pullets and won't lay until June'ish.

Great info everyone. Thanks Jake.

(Free range)
Is there a way to keep them for a few days when away, without a bird sitter?
(AND I have kitties that would need to learn not to hunt birds!)
Are the dark orange, stronger tasting yolks from the breed, or from just what they eat?
A chicken
As for looks, I really like colorful birds , especially like those mandarin ducks!
(As well as what parts to eat, which to toss, which to make into gelatin, etc.!)
I've yet to see a gelatin video yet, yet I'm sure someone has something on videp on TH-cam spmewhere on that subject!
Thanks brother....
What a beautiful Icelandic rooster. I don't think I've ever heard of this breed.
Check out hatcheries like McMurray Hatchery, Greenfire Farms or Alchemist Farm. You could get some rare breeds as well as some colorful egg layers.
@@whitehouseonthehill thank you for the response. Hope all is well on your farm and that you, your family and animals are not too cold.
Lovely video!
So many choices!
+Little White Dory - there sure are! I put it out on Facebook and probably have 40+ breeds in the discussion so far!
Great info taken from this! Thanks!
Is barred rock the same as plymouth rock or are they different? They look the same either how.
Love em all
This collaboration was dope!!
aww chelsie is so knowledgable
Great show! Thanks.
Thanks Jake that great, 👍
Jo Jo
love your chickens
Great chickens!
+Rick Mitchell - thanks, Rick!
+Candide Thirtythree - yeah, that's rough... good defenders of their flock, but can't let your kids around roosters like that, you did the right thing
Hey I'm in Jamaica love your birds how can I get some birds like those
Pretty chickens!!
Great video!! It gave me some good ideas.
+Nearly Organic Noshing - which breed was your favorite?
White House on the Hill I am interested in Cog Hill Farms Chicken. I need one that is heat tolerant. Not much snow in Fl. RIR do really well here, as does Barred Rocks, Sex Links & Wyandottes. I want a very diverse & mixed flock. I am currently searching for Easter Eggers.
+Nearly Organic Noshing - good to know, thanks for sharing!
Great video! I loved hearing everyone’s perspectives.
+The African Homestead - thank you, Eric!
+Gail Elwood - is that true? I've never heard that before.
+Jessie - good luck with your new chicks!
Thanks!! I did not know that! I am awful at spelling but ill pay attention! The salmon favouroulls was gone when I went back :-(
White House on the Hill thank you very much!! I cant wait!! Ive looked into most of these breeds!!
Can you recommend any books or web sites that give valid and reliable information to research different breeds? I am a retired science teacher. I have a deep need to research! LOL!
Chickens are amazing:))
You juggle?! Very cool. I loved all the info and now I have even more chickens on my "really want to have" list (I'll tell Kurt to blame you).
+When In Idaho - I realized I hadn't juggled in an episode since a really early on one - check this one out: th-cam.com/video/EzFUb9nDGsU/w-d-xo.html - I'll take the blame for your chicken fever 😀
This was SO helpful
+James & Lea D - Philia Ministries - cool, thank you!
