In today’s Affinity Photo tutorial, we’ll learn the most natural way to brighten an image. There are many ways to brighten a photo, but a lot of them look unrealistic, and blow out the highlights. This technique prevents these problems, and is extremely easy to do. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

Thank you so much for this!
Thank you Peter! Glad you liked it. 😊
Great tutorial as always. It works but why? How does red channel select light areas?
Selecting the Red channel selects all of the colors in the photo that have a lot of red in them. White/bright areas have a lot of red in them (as well as a lot of blue and green).
The nice thing about selecting the red channel though (as opposed to the other color channels) is that skin tones tend to be mostly red, so selecting the red channel will keep your skin tones safe. Otherwise, you could probably select either of the other color channels and still get a great result.
I hope that helps! 😊
Affinity Revolution thanks it does.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Thank you! 😊

Thank you Georges! 😊

PS just out of curiosity due accent, are you from
UK?
I am from California. 😊
Thanks. Can I just ask after you’ve finished your image can you merge the layers in to one? Or not?
After you're done you can merge your layers, since you don't need to make any further changes. 😊
Thanks Ally!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. 😊
Great and simple lesson to make my photo brighter!!! Especially, how to select dark area that was great way to learn.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Your videos are amazing! I bought Affinity Photo and because of these tutorials I've bought Affinity Designer and Publisher! 💪💪💪👏👏👏
Thank you so much! 😊
I Wonder is using shadow and black sliders would give the same effect?
Try it out! My guess it will work similarly, but not quite as well.
Brilliant!
Thank you! 😊
Excellent, very useful and presented at the right pace and with such clarity.
Thank you Paul! Glad you liked it. 😊
Really great work. I love your videos 👍. I have a question. That's really nice can I do that with affinity on the iPad pro.
Yes you can! The technique is exactly the same on the iPad version. 😊
Affinity Revolution thnx I'm gonna try it. Great job. 👍📸
Really good video I learnt a lot.
Glad it was helpful! 😊
HI there, Thanks for this vid. It looks as though some changes were made to affinity since this vid though? The only way I can get to anything like this is by going to layer, add a new and then I have channel mixer? Is this the same? I can't seem to even get directly to the adjustments anymore in the side pane like I used to. Not sure whats going on with it?
Hmm... I'm not sure what's going on with your adjustments, since they are in the same spot (at the bottom of the layers panel). Feel free to post a screenshot and ask for help on the Affinity forums. Lots of people are great at helping on the forums.

@@AffinityRevolution Hey, can you please make a video on how to paint realistic highlights and shadows on to the subject and also a video on how to use the pen tool
Thanks a lot
You're welcome! 😊
Amazingly simple that give me know about Affinity photo . And as always, clearly and concisely explained. Thanks all !
Thank you! Glad you liked the video. 😊
Parabéns pelo vídeo
Obrigado! 😊
so maybe i'm a doofus, but i didn't think it was "easy"; HOWEVER, your instructions were so clear, that i was able to follow along with a picture of my own and it worked beautifully like you said it would. your video is a refreshing change from the very minimalist affinity manual. thanks so much for the lesson. (i'm a reluctant affinity convert because i don't cotton to photoshop's subscription method of extortion and while i still have my reservations about affinity, this video is giving me hope.)
Good luck learning Affinity! It takes some practice, but I think you'll find it to be a great Photoshop replacement. :)
I hope they create an auto brightness in a future release as I have to go through stacks of images.
If you want, you could turn everything we did in this video into a macro, and then apply the macro to any photo you want with the click of a button. 😊
Where is the Channels panel ? I would like to try this but cant find it. Any help would be appreciated :)
If you can't see the panel, follow the directions shown in this video at 2:15. 😊

Hi I'm not sure to understand why "composite red" will select the brightest parts of the photo. It won't work for all kind of photos will it? apart that point very clear tuto!
@@AffinityRevolution Crystal clear thank you for the quick answer !
Thanks Ally , even an old duffer such as me can follow this :)
Haha thank you! 😊
Are the comands only available using keyboard shortcuts?
No, they are available in the menus at the top as well. I use the keyboard shortcuts though, because finding the commands up in the menus can be tricky.
What video editor do you use in Editing your Videos?
Final Cut Pro. 😊
merci
Je t'en prie 😊
Wow. I've been using Levels (white and black and gamma) to lighten photos - always thought they looked "realistic" but this looks better. I wonder what you mean as "the most natural way"? Is it the physics of color? optics? how are eyes see color????
I wish I knew all the science behind what makes lighting and coloring look natural. We used the word "natural" to highlight the fact that the photo still looks good/normal after brightening it (no blown out highlights, shadows still looking dark, etc.)
Thanks Ally¡
You're welcome! 😊
Can't find 'channels' tab. What persona should I be in?
It's in the Photo Persona. If you don't see it, go to the View Menu at the top, then down to Studio, then over to Channels.
Hi is it possible to do this on iPad Pro versione of AF?
Yes you can. The technique works exactly the same. :)
First want to say thanks for all your videos both your and Ezra are good teachers I really hope he’s doing better... I have a request do you like photo manipulation? If so could you put out some tutorials?
Good news! We're releasing a photo manipulation video out next Tuesday. :)
Hi a terrific video you explain everything so clearly hope your man gets better sorry haven’t kept up with the problem
Thank you Terry! 😊
I have a question: you picked the red channel to select the brightest then inverted it to get the darkest areas. However this does not always work. What I do is I put an average blur on the picture to determine the average color. In your picture the average color is blue green. So when I select the green channel instead of the red channel and continue with the inverse of the green channel, and continue your process the effect is more pronounced. Red in your picture in my opinion does not give you the brightest colors, it accentuates the skin tones. When I tried this with a picture that was blue green only the process picking the red channel does not work at all. IT does if you pick the green or blue channel... When I used a color test strip it also did not work when picking the red channel and inverting it because it also selects the brightest greens as dark colors which is wrong. So I believe you have to average blur first, find what the strongest color that is and the best would be to select that color and use it and follow your process using whatever color (red, blue or green) the average blur color came up with That works .
You can also pick the shadow tonal range and use blend ranges to select only the darkest shadows ( or any part of the shadows you want to lighten) and then follow your process. That works just as well
let me know what you think
That sounds like a good technique to me! 😊 I was trying to keep this video simple, but if you're willing to invest a little more time, I think your method is great.
Thank
You're welcome! 😊
Note: you have to export image as png to keep that opacity that we lowered.
You only need to use PNG if you have a transparent background. You can lower the opacity of the layer we made in this tutorial, and then export your work into any format (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc.) 😊
