easy BOSS DS-1 mod - add more mids

  • The Boss DS-1 has been around since 1978!
    This pedal is a classic even though the sound has been referred as icepicky. I really like the DS-1 Distortion but what really bothers me is the lack of mids.
    The Tone control of the DS-1 mixes between a low-pass filter (R16 & C12) and a high-pass-filter (R17 & C11)
    So by removing or changing for example C12 or R17 you remove or change the respective filter leaving more or less mids to pass trough.
    In this video I give you a few sound examples incl. my favorite mod.

    Who knew that Werner Ziegler had a killer DS-1 mod? I liked R17 removed best. Seems like just doing that is a good way to add more mids without drastically altering the character of the pedal.

    Hi Fabian! After trying lots of alternatives, I ended up with your favorite mod and have no regrets. Tried other values for the tone stack, tried removing and exchanging clipping diodes, tried to decrease the gain biasing Q2 with other values. All I can say is that your mod (removing R17 and changing C12 to 47nf) is the only one that doesn't change the distortion of the DS-1, but gives more mids, more volume/headroom, makes the tone pot very usable and gives dynamics to the pedal.
    All other mods change drastically the sound of the DS-1, which wasn't my desire. My DS-1 is totally usable and it smokes my other expensive pedals. Thank you very much! All the best to you! :)

    Exactly what I was looking for. Did some googling after watching this to see if other people have done this. Figured out that cutting r17 would add more low end .. mine was already modded (removed clipping diodes) but I wanted to mod it further in a way that wouldn't really hurt if I decided to get new components for a more complex mod... Anyway, now I have no R17 and no clipping diodes, and this thing is a WICKED loud and super pretty sounding cleanish boost. Even with the gain slammed, it's still pretty clean. Really takes my sovtek mig50 to the next level!!!
    Thanks!!!

      Hey mate... Which are the clipping diodes you took off? D4 and D5 diodes? "cause I did this to mine and I'm very worried on removing the R17 (keep those 3 components off) and my pedal does not work anymore... I'd be please to hear from you if this is what you did and if this still works

    There are at least 3 versions of this pedal. The first one with a standard 2 x 4 legs IC (called 8-pin dual inline), the next one (yours) with 8 pins in-line IC, and later probably a 8 pins in-line with
    SMD components. I once made a very good sounding mod to the tonecontrol also, but I have luckily forgotten what it was 🙂

    Q2 is where a lot of the problems with the ds-1 start. I tried taming it by rebiasing it and it doesn't quite sound right so I went for a specific sound and a specific guitar - the telecaster in heavy controllable overdrive. Basically R9 needs to be increased from 22 ohms to 100 ohms or more - Leave R6 at 100k ohms and you get a lot more touch sensitivity and gradual break-up. Trial and error got me there - following in many other footprints on the way.

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop

      If you want to sound like Carlos Santana you will need to play his whole setup (Guitar, Amp, Speaker, Effects) not to mention skill. A distortion pedal alone will not get you there.

    wouldn’t it make much more sense to run it through an overdriven tube amp, boosting the mids with the eq? I didn’t hear anything I couldn’t replicate with a stock DS-1

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop
      @FabiansTinyWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything that works "for you" makes sense. For me I don't like the original sound. Of courst I could crank the mids on my amp all the way up. But when I switch from the DS1 on my pedalboard to an overdrive I don't want to run to my amp to dial the mids down again. So instead of trying to boost the mids with my amp I like to have the best possible input signal for my amp to work with.

    • @FabiansTinyWorkshop
      @FabiansTinyWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I asume you're refering to my favorite mod:
      C12 = 47nf, R17 = remove
      The Tone control of the DS-1 mixes between a low-pass filter (R16 & C12) and a high-pass-filter (R17 & C11)
      So by removing or changing for example C12 or R17 you remove or change the respective filter leaving more or less mids to pass trough.
      I don't know what Robert Keeley did to the pedal. So I can't tell if this mod will change it to the better. If you know how to use a soldering iron give it a try. You can always change it back.
