I once had a professor who had a very strict no-late policy that was mandated by the department. My wife was pregnant, and I saw that the due date for a project was a few days after my wife's due date. I told my professor at the beginning of the semester that I knew the policy, but that I just simply didn't know what would happen because.... well, babies are unpredictable. He told me that he just simply couldn't give me any leeway because if he did, he'd have to give everyone leeway when they asked for it. He then told me that he still expected me to turn in the project, even if it was late, and even though it would be a zero if it was late. I worked so hard to try to get that project done a week early to try and get it turned in before my baby came, but I just couldn't. Then, my baby was born, and my project was late. I got a zero, but I still turned it in because it was expected. I still very much respect that professor for other reasons, but that was a hard pill to swallow.
About the same. But also their attitude in class. Good attitude that suggest that the student here to learn will get more leniency that student's who are smarmy and arrogant. I have one of those now, she's going to walk with that C and be grateful, or ungrateful as the case may be. She's made her opinion of me known. Hopefully the FBI doesn't hire her in 2-3 years. But good, or at least neutral attitude will get you excused absences when the car engine needs to be replaced and half of the student body are on Pell grants.
For me is easy - I always give an extension. My final exam is 50% of my grade and also they have to pass the exam (e.g 50% on the exam itself), so one or two assignments, with a weigh of 2% of their final grade - I do not care. Those that are genuinely studying will pass, those that are smart asses will fail anyway.

That sucks though.
You should have tried appealing to the department.
