  • Join me and 3 of my DMs/friends as we discuss our general impressions on Tasha's Cauldron of Everything AND try to answer this pressing question: "Can I take the new Custom Lineage option during character creation and still qualify for a feat that has a racial pre-requisite?"

I personally really like race restricted feats it gives flair to different races. I feel it would only be a barrier if you didn't have the freedom to choose that particular race in your character creation process.

So I'm bad with names. So right to left everyone's names now: funnybeard man, critlander, Mr Roger's (from the diverse neighborhood), and Tori!

The custom lineage is meant to be LIKE the variant human. So you are a variant elf etc. That to me was the spirit of the feature.

As far as racial feats with custom lineage, I personally would suggest allowing someone using custom lineage to qualify as up to 2 different races for the sake of feats. This enables you to really FEEL like a hybrid, like, say you're a half orc half elf gish, you take the elven accuracy and the orc feats bc that fits your character build mechanically and it really enables you to build these different half and half races and have them FEEL like that race. Say you have a half dragonborn half elf with dragon hide for ac and elven accuracy. You really will feel like a draconic elf. The feats need to stay race specific, just let custom lineage count as any 2 chosen races for the sake of feats on that character

I'm DMing a Ravnica campaign and one of my players is a custom lineages of a goblin-minotaur hybrid. Rakdos had a play in that "union".

So, approaching your questions about taking a feat that has a race prerequisite as a custom lineage character. As the DM, I would allow it, but I would say that you'd need to choose the race your lineage is most backed by. So if you want to be a custom lineage elf, then you can take elven accuracy but you can't take Dwarven Fortitude as well for example.

Counter argument: Half-elf still has access to Elven Accuracy, so how much "Elf" blood do you need to qualify for Elven Accuracy. Half Elf also only gets some of the elf features, but they also get some Human features i.e. floating ability scores. If I was posed this question as a DM, I would say you can only pick a maximum of 2 races, and I would reserve the right to veto for thematic reasons. For instance, I would say NO to Half Orc, Half Elf. At least in an Aber-Toril setting.

It seems that WOTC ended on the "nope, you're not actually an Elf" side of this. Enough so that official character builders like dndbeyond won't let you take feats like Elven Accuracy at all if you run custom lineage.

Imagine a custom lineage character having EA(Elf), Fade Away(Gnome), and Orcish Fury(Half-orc) all at the same time.

One of the things I found annoying in Tasha's is the tattoos are mixed in to the magic items. It makes it really hard to look through them all. I know its small but its just really annoying, I wish they just had there own section.
