Me too man me too. Why did we ever leave 90s and early 2000s. I thought my life was shitty in thoes days and wanted to move on fast. And now here i am, nostalgic do death for thoes good old golden sun shiny days
I like Natalie Imbruglia's version, for her personality, and her upbeat spirit. But there is no doubt that Anne Preven not only had the best interpretation of her own song, but also that her soul really came through the words. It was like two sides of the same coin. But now that I heard Anne's version, and her vision of what the song was meant to be, I will never be able to listen to Natalie Imbruglia's version with the same mindset again. Well done, both women.
This happens a lot. Every time 'Mad World' is covered youtube is full of comments about Gary Jules like he's some songwriting genius and not just a guy who covered it.
I remember watching this when it first aired, I knew the Natalie version pretty well and during this interview I was half paying attention. When she started singing I stopped what I was doing and turned to watch the tv. I was stunned by the performance. I actually never forgot it. Thanks for this upload I've searched for it over the years and never found it until now.
This is so much more genuine. 💜 I fell in love with this song's lyrics when I heard Natalie's version growing up, but i fell even more in love with them, the music, and Anne's voice, when I found the original. I wasn't positive from the get go that she wrote it, (had to google it 😅) but it seemed obvious judging by the hurt and sincerity in her voice. I knew i'd be surprised if she hadn't.
Anne Preven is easy one of the most under-rated dynamic songwriters of a generation. If you can find a copy of her never released 'ANNETENNA LP,' I suggest you do so. It truly is a mark of pop rock perfection from beginning to end. Glad to see this footage finally make its way into primetime !
I love Natalie’s version, yet it’s true. The perspective of the original words were lost in her version. Anne Preven’s words and performance has much more of a sense of strength and resolve. Natalie’s version is sadder with a sense of unresolved pain. This came out in 1997, the year my daughter was born. And I really was torn! 😂😅
nietzschebabie My daughter was born also in 1997. I was also diagnosed with bone cancer at the same time, and my footy team lost the GF in the dying minutes of the game. This song will always be a part of me, regardless of who sings it.(obviously if I’m writing this in 2020, I kicked the bone cancers butt.)
Oh Gosh I've been looking for this Version , i heard this first on my brother's Personal Computer way back when i was in Elementary ,i finally found now
It's much more beautiful the way she sings it-the way she created it to be sung. I feel like we were all cheated when it was released by a different person, using a quicker tempo. It was missing the emotion that I hear/feel listening to it now-years later! Thanks! ✌️♥️
It's 2020 and i just found out that this song was not from where I thought it was from. This was great. Gave me chills >;-) You got soul girl. Much Love >;-)
2021 and here i am as a 90s kid enjoying this song jst as much as i did when i was a kid! Gotta give all the credit to Anne, although natalie took the song to the top of the chart. ❤️
Anne Preven canta con el alma como debe ser la canción a mi en lo personal desde que escuché la versión original de Ednaswap me quedé con ella para siempre, sobre todo esta misma versión que tiene integrada la guitarra....
This version has 1994 written all over it, while Natalie's version definitely has 1998 written all over it. It's a reminder to just about anyone the change in time from 1993/4 to 1998/9 the industry shifted in such length. Genre of music were a whole trope of mixed things in the 90's. Ex: Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden in the early 90's to Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray into the late 90's.
Wow. I love this version so much better. With her singing the song she wrote, you can just sense the realism this song has with it's meaning on how she sings it. Wow.
I loved what Howard said at the end "that is good, you are good" you nailed it! It's nothing more than just "good" Natalie took this song and made it an anthem, so thanks Natalie for making this a Huge tune!
People often seem to forget that one of the song's co-writers, Phil Thornalley, was the producer of Natalie's album and suggested to record her version. They had seen the success of Lis Sorensen and Trine Rein's pop versions, and Ednaswap's first album had not done very well by contrast. It was poor timing that the band was planning on releasing it as a single at last...but the song had been around for four years at that point. There was no guarantee Natalie's version would have been a hit, but fortunately it was, so from a songwriting perspective they did well.
Let's face it, it was made into a uptempo pop song and Natalie is gorgeous in the video. It took a good song to work, and Anne deserves credit, but the video and a more uptempo version is probably what sold it.
Natalie's version was just more "audience friendly" and went over more because of that. Natalies sound was more popular at the time I think. They probably wasn't sure where to put this. Was a little grudge with some alternative elements and tad folksy. I like both versions, but Anne's version is definitely more powerful imo at the end of the day. So much talent, im surprised Ednaswap wasn't more popular.
Chord changes are certainly more interesting: the Natalie version was "cleaned up for radio". This has a dirtier, harder edge that I love, no surprise Howard likes it too
Really nice to hear the original unplugged, but I see the obvious appeal of Natalie's faster and slicker version. Plus, Natalie's natural beauty played extremely well on video.
Both versions are great, song writer should have recorded her version before as written, but unfortunately song writers write songs that are passed on to singers to perform and end up recording it, in turn making it popular as POP Music shared with world. Natlie Umbruglia sung the song as it stands favorably in the world of music to present day. She will be remembered for it, although she may have not written it. Thanks to Anne Preven for writing it is a great song lyrics, and Thanks to Natlie Umbrulia for her recording voice and singing performance. KUDOS to both women Great Job! What made the song even more memorable was the Mime's interpretation in sign language in the video. Anne Preven should professionally record her original version as written and release it to the world.
I love how year 2000 she looks.
Daryl Jones early 90s were way better
Me too man me too. Why did we ever leave 90s and early 2000s. I thought my life was shitty in thoes days and wanted to move on fast. And now here i am, nostalgic do death for thoes good old golden sun shiny days
She's beautiful & brilliant ❤
Year 2000 was still pretty much 90s
Yea that's refreshing
Anne Preven’s version with Ednaswap is sooooo great. Saw them live years ago in Hollywood. Blew my mind. A fan for life.
Has it been more than 20 years already? Time transcending lyrics and tunes, 90s classics never get old.
Always loved the song. I was born in ‘93
JustBrowsing00 no classic get old that is why it’s a classic dummy
JustBrowsing00 right on right on
Thanks, as if I needed to feel any older.
I like Natalie Imbruglia's version, for her personality, and her upbeat spirit. I never knew this wasn't Natalie Imbruglia's song? What? All these years I'm blown away and I'm just listening to her cover her own song?
Most songs u hear aren't written by performer
This happens a lot. Every time 'Mad World' is covered youtube is full of comments about Gary Jules like he's some songwriting genius and not just a guy who covered it.
Imagine if this was the radio version , unbelievable emotion
I remember that day on Howard. Here to listen again in 2020. Epic performance!!
I remember watching this when it first aired, I knew the Natalie version pretty well and during this interview I was half paying attention. When she started singing I stopped what I was doing and turned to watch the tv. I was stunned by the performance. I actually never forgot it. Anne Preven: I love your version of your song, best!! Beautiful.
One of my favorite performances on the Stern Show. The way Anne Preven sings the song gives it so much more heart and soul then Imbruglia's version.
The tears running downs my face are real... thank you for this
i love it when people cover their songs and do it more acoustically or just bring it down to their essentials makes it more personal its awesome
I remember this when it aired. Best live performance ever!
Thank you Anne for your beautiful words, song & talent. I get it ❤ from Australia
2021. Took me this long. Wish I would have found this before Natalie’s version. This has jacked my world. I now am obsessed with Anne Preven.
I first heard Natalie sing this song, and I thought, "nice song".
.... but shivers ran up and down my spine when i heard Anne sing it !! :))
Just phenomenal. The Natalie has all the big production. This has all the emotion. Girl you're something else.
"A song from the depths of my evil depressed soul" - Anne Preven
This is so much more genuine. 💜
I fell in love with this song's lyrics when I heard Natalie's version growing up, but i fell even more in love with them, the music, and Anne's voice, when I found the original.

I remember this live. Fucking blew me away

Glad to see this footage finally make its way into primetime !
Hmmm
This song is beautiful.
This brings a tear to my eye every time I here it.Best version of this song is by the lady who wrote it...........
Even her original version on the Edna Swap album was a faster and a bit poppy. This version is on another level.
This song was amazing and beautiful. It is perfect
I really like both versions, but I am glad I got to hear the story that I didn’t know. Such an emotional song!
Why were you Torn?

It's always been about the song, what it says and how it's conveyed to anyone who cares listen. This is just perfect.
this song and her voice reached right into my soul
Such a different version, intense, great vocal delivery.....release again!!
this is one of the most late 90s things i've seen/heard in a long time
That face after 2:02 though, when he says "all right, i 'll shut up"
This original Torn is so real and biting. I like it very much.
Oh Gosh I've been looking for this Version , i heard this first on my brother's Personal Computer way back when i was in Elementary ,i finally found now
Hands down the best musical performance on the Howard Stern show, EVER!
I remember this episode. Howard was a master interviewer ( again)...,
I love her version. Both versions are cool in their own way. One is dark and gritty the other is bubbly.
I AM SOOOO GLAD I WATCHED THIS!!!
Oh wow, first time I heard the original version, much much better. I love her voice, very raw.
Nobody did it better.❤️
She ROCKKSSSSSS!!!!
It's much more beautiful the way she sings it-the way she created it to be sung. I feel like we were all cheated when it was released by a different person, using a quicker tempo. It was missing the emotion that I hear/feel listening to it now-years later!
Thanks! ✌️♥️
The much less sugary sweet bubble gum pop version Natalie did. This rendition has real emotion. Dig it.
It's 2020 and i just found out that this song was not from where I thought it was from. This was great. Gave me chills >;-) You got soul girl. Much Love >;-)
The two singers almost have the same tone of voice, she has a little grittier and rawer tone to her voice. This was good and loved it!!!
2021 and here i am as a 90s kid enjoying this song jst as much as i did when i was a kid! Gotta give all the credit to Anne, although natalie took the song to the top of the chart. ❤️
that song hits deep. Thank you!
I was listening live to this performance in one of the parking garages at San Jose State!
LEGEND! STILL ONE OF MY GAV SONG OF ALL TIMES!
Oh, how much I love Natalie Imbruglia
She's gorgeous 😍
totally impressed with the real version...composer has great passion...heard this live...what 19 years ago...shit..never forgotten..."that is good"
Anne Preven canta con el alma como debe ser la canción a mi en lo personal desde que escuché la versión original de Ednaswap me quedé con ella para siempre, sobre todo esta misma versión que tiene integrada la guitarra....

Darrin Paul SERIOUSLY????
Thanks to Natalie, the writer benefits with a lifetime of royalties. Covid watching in Hawaii 4/16/21 😷🤙🏼
So much passion. Love this much more.
I loved what Howard said at the end "that is good, you are good" you nailed it! It's nothing more than just "good" Natalie took this song and made it an anthem, so thanks Natalie for making this a Huge tune!
Definitely, the one who wrote the song can sing it with more feelings.... her way to sing touched me more than Natalie's song... Cool..!!
I love these singing segments on HS! Keep them coming
I like ur profile pic 😍
I love this song too.
Song starts at 2:09
that grit !!!!!! goosebumps...
Beautiful, beautiful voice
I have an EdnaSwap cd from 1998. She’s awesome.

Lol the purple Gary cartoon on the wall isn't distracting at all ...
Now it does
yeah, completely ruined the mood haha
LOL I was thinking the same thing.
or the Jackie puppet! 😂
Te adoro Anne I love it 😀 💘
No reason to feel slighted being a great writer. Natalie's version just brought it to a wider audience for the time.

Really great song
wow she sounds great and she is beautifull man howard realy knows how to set up the sound sounds great
Chord changes are certainly more interesting: the Natalie version was "cleaned up for radio". This has a dirtier, harder edge that I love, no surprise Howard likes it too
you said it best
Wowwwwwww !!!!!! ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT
one of my biggest successes in life was calling into howard stern twice back in 2000, and they were really respectful to me.
I can't be mad at Natalie for covering this song though, but this version just makes sense of the lyrics.
thanx howard ! and PUT THE EDNASWAP VERSION ON STREAMING PLATFORMS PLEASE
It is, on amazon :)
Panda Rabbi Ednaswap is blocked on Spotify in the UK. WHY
Well I love both versions. ❤
When he says "I'll shut up" and she nods her head...haha!
Wow, I never paid attention to the lyrics, this version left it all clear
I've been waiting for this.
Both versions are really good
Awesome voice
Amazing.
I love it!
This just makes me miss the old show..
Really nice to hear the original unplugged, but I see the obvious appeal of Natalie's faster and slicker version. Plus, Natalie's natural beauty played extremely well on video.
Now I know why Natalies version made that huge success, took a beautiful and well wrote song and made it more pop and appealing, great smart move tbh
Douglas Mota never even heard that. Ill check it out but source material is where its at
also sad
I still prefer the original version, makes more sense, such a shame this group never made it to success
Doesn’t hurt that Natalie is stunning.
*well written
Wow! I'm shook to know now Natalie isn't the original songwriter or singer. This is an amazing version!!!
Her voice is the truth.
I love Her
"Good. That is good. You are good!"
She blushes like a schoolgirl 😊
Both versions are great, song writer should have recorded her version before as written, but unfortunately song writers write songs that are passed on to singers to perform and end up recording it, in turn making it popular as POP Music shared with world. Preven released her record 2 years before Natalie. You should inquire a bit before trying to play the philosophers on TH-cam ...
This changes EVERYTHING!
hahahaha
Brilliant
Anyone know the chords to this particular version? 🤔
This version is far more better than her original and nathalie's. ❤️
Awesome!
brilliant
wow!!! I didn't know that
