pretty good, but there was one very tiny but significant detail missed, and I don't blame your for it since it's second nature to not distinguish it in a game, but Noelle doesn't answer Kris' call for help She answers YOUR call
It's ambiguous. Some instances of you vs kris does something were changed in Chapter 1 in 2's release so it's definately meant to make a difference, but there's plenty of ACTs in chapter 2 where Kris is given "you did something" descriptions. Could be you forcing your will, or since "you whisper Noelle's name", it's Kris doing the same change of tone that worked for the pacifist/neutral route in hopes that she won't hear... But she does.
@@FaelumbreProject There are ambiguities but this really isn't one of them. She outright mentions afterward that the voice she was hearing didn't actually sound like Kris
@@FaelumbreProject , one pattern I was starting to pick up on (and someday might try to compile but gosh it'd be a lot of work...), is that both in UT & DR, lots of the time, your character actions are in present-tense... But sometimes, in past-tense. So this "you" vs "Kris" adds a whole new dimension to that. But it at least SEEMS to me like present-tense reads more like a command... while the past-tense remarks seem more like the narrator noticing that the character did this or that, kind of like "Huh, your throat tightened (after drinking the hot chocolate that reminds Kris of Asriel)" kind of deal. I doubt I'd have the time to do the full project, but would love to find out if anyone else has noticed & is going for it.
When i played the game I wasn't able to delve much into Spamton's whole deal, but seeing how the entire Internet went crazy for him I knew there had to be more. I get it now!
Spamton appeals to EVERYTHING I love (scummy businessman character, unique and spooky aesthetic with the ventriloquist doll, absolutely chaotic disposition, early 2000's vibes), to the point where I have no idea how any character will top them for me personally. It's both a unique combination of traits, and a widely appealing one at that due to how much Spamton optimizes them. It's funny, no character in Chapter 1 specifically really left an impression on me besides Seam. I had zero idea why people loved Jevil so much, I myself love creepy clowns and spooky colors, but he just kinda blended in with every other creepy clown out there. And King Spade's POINT was to be a generic evil ruler, sure, but it's also the end result. But then you have Chapter 2 with epic gamer Berdly, corruption GlaDOS Queen, and the absolute MASTER that is Spamton G. Spamton. Even the way he SPEAKS is unique. You can HEAR it in your head. I think the future chapters are gonna have amazing characters too, but how they'll measure up to something as unique and terrifying as Spamton is something I'm unaware of.
@@i8dacookies890 Oh, I just like talking, no matter how many people see my comments. It directly relates as a reply to your comment, too. (Also make that 18 likes)
Or maybe spamton is just the starting point for how awesome these secret bosses will be. I'm not an optimist or anything but I mean Toby fox is awesome and does some amazing things with these games so u never know?
Fear, loneliness, desperation and trying to keep a brave grin in the face of it all... Yeah, no wonder lots of folks somehow feel a connection with that little conman puppet.
It's amazing how many people just grin and bear with it despite the numerous hardships we all face every day. So having an entertaining character who portrays it is a wonderful thing.
well, my personal view is that all the secret bosses will all represent some type of freedom jevil is supposed to be physical freedom, the literal definition of it spamton is supposed to be the freedom to make choices my personal theory is that in one of the next chapters, the character you first made that was discarded would possibly represent the freedom of self expression?
Not to mention, there's a theme of being discarded and useless. Jevil is the Joker Card which is famous in poker for being useless. And Spamton is literal spam emails that are very commonly thrown out.
I like how for the moments when Spamton’s text would censor itself via ad catchphrases, you do the same for the video via using an actual ad (or at the very least, making up your own ads to splice into the video at the right times). It’s the little details like that that make the video even more special.
I JUST WANTED A VIDEO ABOUT THE FUNNY DELTARUNE BIGSHOT, WHY MUST YOU FILL ME WITH SUCH EXISTENTIAL DREAD?! Seriously though, that was... just... fucking hell I don't have the words, I'm blown away by this video. The sheer attention to detail to emulate all of Spamton's glitchiness, images flitting in and out of frame rapid fire, pulling (And voicing!) ads from all sorts of places to match the lunacy of his speech patterns, and the absolutely GLORIOUS costume. The amount of work it must've taken is flooring me. This is art, deserving all of the Kromer in the world and more, well done! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go lay in bed and stare at the ceiling for 3 hours as I fret about algorithms and channel memberships.
what i love about toby fox's writing that was barely touched on in this video is the character connections and chemistry. it was briefly mentioned with mettaton and jevil having a connection to spamton, the rest of the undertale and deltarune cast have so many parallels and connections that it becomes this huge intertangled web of chemistry. toby fox really knows how to write for chemistry
Aside from this, the thing I really respect and aspire to in my own writings that he does, is how he writes characters with voices YOU CAN HEAR. Seriously, when people are doing fan voices for characters, and 80% of them go for a very similar voice, that is a MARVEL of writing that I don't even know how to put into words.
Crazy how Toby Fox just drops chapter 2 for *free* and it has 3 absolute mastehpeace characters in Queen, Spamton, and Berdley If this is the demo still, the full game is gonna be incredible
He said it was a special early drop because of everything going on in the world right now, and I'm glad he did. This chapter deserves room to breath before we get the rest all at once
To be fair he only released it because of the whole crisis but still, he didn't have to do that. I guess you could say he spared some generosity! I'll see myself out.
I love how people make fun of his whole "tumblr sexyman" status, when he's such a brilliant representation of the fact that in spite of our best efforts, none of us really have any control over the kind of life we get to have. He's basically all of us, losing our minds in the burning funhouse of late capitalism. It was impossible for that kind of sympathetic desperation not to turn into affection.
Spamton is such a strange Tumblr sexyman, hes short, hideous and unhinged, the total _Opposite_ Of tumblr sexymen traits, they're often tall, put together, well kept and attractive (sexymen are unhinged but the kind of casual unhinged where spamton is desperate unhinged and begging for attention where any other sexyman would brush you off
Hes no domaneering teen bad boy with a soft side, he's a maniacal probably middle aged ugly little baby man who has no security or autonomy Yet hes so captivating in a way
@@L0rdOfThePies you say that, but there's also zacharie from off, king candy, lemongrab, etc. there's always been a section of tumblr sexymen for the absolute weirdos, spamton is unique in that he pulled that to the forefront
Yeah that’s honestly why the pacifist ending to his boss fight hit all the harder for me. The moment builds up like he’s finally broken free now that his strings are cute only for the game to basically go, “Well what did you really think was going to happen? A puppet without it’s strings isn’t free, it’s merely devoid of use.” A rather dark but effective means of reminding the player you’re all just pawns in someone else’s game.
Honestly, I've been shocked at how unsexyman he's been treated. He's almost in daughteru teritory at least around my spaces; peers with Grogu more than Sans. It's neat/weird.
Spamton is many things: comical, tragic, horrifying, mysterious. He is an enigma and he doesn't really fit into Deltarune. But, when you put the pieces together, he fits in terrifyingly well, more well than you'd think at first glance. You were able to make good on talking about the successful little spambot and the new bits you added flesh him out more than any of us expected. If this is the direction Toby is taking his passion project, best to say I won't be touching that dial anytime soon.
As someone who just did not click with Spamton at all when I ran through Chapter 2, this actually did a lot for showing me why so many people love this character. Pretty good character dive overall (gonna have to subtract some points for the Berdly slander tho. He might be a garbage character, but that's what makes him great.)
@@HattedGamer01 you say that like none of your greatest friends in Deltarune or even Undertale didn’t shoot at you or tried to stab you to death. Besides he wasn’t trying to badly injure Noelle in his own incredibly dumb way he was trying to “save” Noelle from Kris.
That's one of the big things... Spamton's struggles are so relatable for so many of us. From YT creators, to contract workers, to people who have been manipulated, or abandoned, neglected, or are struggling not to give up on trying to make their lives better... He's the embodiment of that whole "NEVER give up!" mindset that's shoved into our faces all our lives, which inspires so many... yet, also leads so many to suffer. Sometimes, when you can't change your situation no matter how much you try, you end up losing quality & quantity of life if you keep trying & trying fruitlessly. It's so sad, I hate thinking about it... but sometimes, when it comes to certain goals, some people really SHOULD give up, after a certain point. I'm still wrestling with that now. Two decades of trying to figure out my health problems, wasting all those years poring over research & getting test after test, doctor after doctor, only to find that all those years went by without me, my sleep & stress levels have suffered & are causing me MORE health problems... If you keep attacking a giant's ankles fruitlessly, you'll get stomped over & over again, & accomplish nothing but your own injury & death. Like Spamton, I have to learn that sometimes, you have to play the hand you're dealt, even if it's a definite loss, & find freedom within your confines. 😮💨 Sometimes, fleeing the giant is the only way to survive... Back to this video though... Of course, it couldn't touch on EVERY single thing -- which is fine because this was already such a massive & content-filled video already, but I'll still mention for those who want to dig deeper: The additional Swatchling dialogue when you backtrack to guest rooms, talking about how over time Spamton spent less time in his own room, & more time down in the basement, praying... How if you try to insert the LoadedDisk into the Spamton-shaped mannequin with the dress (supposing you didn't buy it), it squirms in your hand & won't fit... How the Addisons try to avoid the subject of Spamton when Kris independently brings up the subject to them (clearly as invested in Spamton as we are, since he understands Kris in a way nobody else can)... And the fact that even the gritty uh, Peer-Pressure Route reveals some of the most harrowing details about Spamton's long-term suffering when he projects himself onto Kris (apparently screaming his throat raw & voiceless from trying & trying to call his benefactor through a prolonged emotional breakdown, & how over the years he still cried out his friends' names at the bottom of the dumpster, so lonely, so desperate to be with them again, but nobody came.😢)... ...EVEN THEN, you STILL made SUCH a deep, hard-hitting, & entertaining video that goes into such depth, notices & uses so much detail, & fully embraces what makes Spamton so compelling (& Toby such a genius!). All his different facets so LOVINGLY embraced & explained. Thank you SO MUCH for giving this character SUCH a worthy analysis, even analyzing his attacks themselves, emulating his speech style with fantastically creative editing, even full-on cosplaying to the haunting sound of the extracted vocals from "Big Shot". This video is a work of art in and of itself! Absolutely sharing this with all my friends & followers. You really did Spamton justice. Thank you! 😻
26:27 The thing I find great about this is that while Spamton is alone, Kris...never is. Because *we* call Noelle out. Kris is never alone because we're here, guiding his actions, while Spamton's own guide abandoned him a long time ago. It's as if Spamton was another protagonistic character, and Gaster was the player. Eventually, he got sick of the game, and stopped playing, leaving Spamton to crash and burn. Kris is a horrible mirror of Spamton, the example of what a guide that doesn't lose focus on their puppet can do, while Spamton is an example of what happens when that guide leaves.
What I like about Spamton's character is how he makes everything feel... wrong. When I first saw him, he just made me feel extremely uncomfortable, he obviously signals there is something wrong with him since the start, and this gets more visible during the sidequest. Being in the Queen basement while doing the sidequest feels like you're making a big mistake, like there is something wrong, and the music and overall creepy aura really give that feeling. Basically: I don't like him ingame, but I like his character because it makes me feel like that. Jevil's fight is still better though, Spamton NEO's patterns are too chaotic and have no consistence at all, which I don't like.
Tbf only like, 3 of his attacks are randomly chaotic (the face attack, the phone hands attack, the heart chain accompanied with 2 mini heart chains) the rest are a joke and really easy to dodge imo, hes ALOT easier than jevil
@@leedlelel2373 I meant it in the sense of consistence. Jevil's bullets revolve around cards and the joker card, because, well, yeah. King use spades and most of his patterns involve moving the box around with the chain. Queen is kind of random, but you can see consistent references to the Cyber World, which is kind of a theme since she rules it. Spamton however, he literally gets a new bullet or power for every attack he does, and, don't get me wrong, characters with lots of different, original powers are cool (someone tell that to the UT AU fandom), but I don't like that part of Spamton at all, most of his attacks don't have relation at all with the first fight, even though he's transformed, and he barely keeps the bullets consistent. Every attack, there's some new thing thrown at you. At least Queen stacks different types of bullets in a single attack, Spamton just makes new ones every turn. tl;dr: it's more of consistance with bullets than difficulty, tho he is easier than Jevil by far.
this, my favorite part of spamton is the overwhelming feeling of dread created during the build-up to neo you KNOW that you shouldn't be doing this and you're making a grave mistake
I respect the hustle, using a video on Spamton as an excuse to plug your shit as much as possible. in all seriousness, what a damn good video. Perfect encapsulation of the character. So I *will* get the gears flowing.
Spamton was definitely my second favourite character in chapter 2 (Berdly is always Number 1 in my books). Mainly because I was in a VC with my friends while one of them played it, all of us voicing different characters, and one of us got the idea to have two different people, me being one of them, to voice Spamton at the same time. It was definitely the most fun I’ve ever had with voicing a character. It was a [ONCE IN A LIFETIME OFFER] and I loved it. It just added something to Spamton’s absurdity and lack of ‘please stay in one place’…ity.
You said it exactly. By the time I got to Spamton I was very into the game and I turned to my wife after two lines from him and said "I think I love this guy." Thank you so much for making this video, I've wanted someone to give me some insight into why Spamton seems to have become such a big blast for this chapter. You also iluminated why I found his fight far easier than Jevil's.
Man, the voicing in this video is top-notch. As is the editing, script, and... actually, pretty much everything. I think that's why everybody fell in love with this [BIG SHOT] in the first place, he's such a unique combination of niche traits that they all just morph into something entirely new. Ya like scummy businessmen, early 2000's internet vibes, ventriloquist dolls, dealing with the devil, and existential dread? Spamton takes all of those inspirations, cranks them up to ten, and just RUNS with 'em. It's great. And it gives you an entity that's unforgettable in how much of an oddball they are. Even his [One of a kind!] speech patterns are [fit for a great night in San Fran]. I believe that even after this game's finished, Spamton will stand out as this game's Sans. Words like Kromer are already entering the basic lexicon of the internet, and there's fanart of him EVERYWHERE along with banger remixes of his theme. Not that other characters don't have a chance to usurp him, but he brings so many unique traits to the table that unlike Jevil, he's not fading away anytime soon at ALL.
If Jevil’s craziness, Spamton is madness. He’s insane, and he KNOWS he’s insane. _And he hates it_ He’s a conman by nature, sure, but there’s some part of him that doesn’t like the cheap tricks he’s pulling, the way he’s using Kris as a puppet for his ambitions. But he’s come to far, he can’t give up now. And in the weird route, he’s genuinely HURT by Kris throwing it all away the instant he finally makes [[BIG]] again. Not even 5 minutes of being on top, and Kris is already trying to pull the plug on his act. Just. Like. Mike.
I didn't expect you to cover this, at all. What a great surprise, looking forward to learning from this one! Nice job on all of these, I'm sure you're helping a lot of people by showing exactly why you appreciate things in games! Edit: Dear krud this was a lot to take in xD
I knew pretty much all the cold hard facts about Spamton, like garbage noise and NEO and stuff, but I never considered Kris' reaction to him. Which is sort of the point, from a storytelling perspective - _you_ don't take a step back, _Kris_ does. They're so overwhelmed with shock/fear/emotion in general that they literally break from your control for a split-second, which they haven't done any other time, afaik. That's wild. This has given me a whole new appreciation for HEY EVERY! that I didn't even want lmao. I really needed this step back to actually look at his character and lore. It's also got me spinning theories like crazy. I relate to this little guy so much now. He can have all three digits on the back of my credit card any day.
It's so fascinating that Spamton knows about the other routes in the game but he literally can't speak it. The Thorn Ring is his 'commemorative ring', as he gives it to Noelle for the [LOW LOW PRICE] of his favourite year. When you attack him in the Snowgrave Route, he'll say, "It doesn't mean you can beat me up. Just because you bought my [Commemorative Ring]." In the normal route, he says to Kris, "Now's your chance to be a BIG SHOT!! And I've got just. The thing. You need. That's... [hyperlink blocked]." He knows that he'll become NEO if you follow the Snowgrave route and you're offered the Thorn Ring. He even tempts the player with, "You want it, you want [hyperlink blocked], _don't you?"_ clearly trying to squirm his way into the player's head.
I love the implied parallel between Spamton's and Designing For's hope to become big. This was a pretty good breakdown already with the bracketed voices sprinkled throughout the video, but that cosplay... I've seen some theory videos that arguably "might" be more in-depth than this, but the amount of effort you put into the presentation is certainly far beyond a 30k subscriber-sized channel. Hopefully your channel gets the recognition it deserves soon!
Ive never seen anyone analyse and comment on spamton in such a way, the video is amazing and despite all my laziness it brought me down to the comments to write this little sentence of support.
something i like about snowgrave is it almost feels like we have found a method to bypass being a "puppet". our choices don't matter, the game will always spit in our face whenever we try to make a decision, however, kris' friends are capable of altering the outcome's were forced into, hinted constantly through deltarune. and the ending of snowgrave shows this. spamton creates an ultimatum for you, expecting you to be unable to bypass it. neither can defeat one another, so your trapped in an endless loop. two puppets unable to change the outcome of the fight. but you already found your answer. we cannot make our own decisions, but we can get someone else to do it for us. that is why when we call noelle it says "you" called, and not kris. and the true irony of this, is spamton KNEW this. "gaster" altered his fate, he figured out the same thing as we did, and thats why he desperately tried to get us to befriend him, and the reason he couldn't do it after "gaster" left was because nobody would be his friend. his entire fight is a farce to attempt to gain attention, he wants us to become his friend, so he can finally become something more then just a insane empty husk. he attacks you in snowgrave because he realized that everything he did for us to be strong for brownie points was in vain, and we only had a selfish desire to push forward.
Yes, and the fact Berdly is probably unconscious or just DEAD means a lot for this. Your choices weren't meant to matter, but the Snowgrave route shows how desperate the player was to make their choices matter to the point of killing someone who could have some sort of importance later on.
I will admit....upon first seeing Spamton, I was terrified. But after some time, I freaking ADORE this guy. He became so facinating to me that I actually paid attention to his backstory and...it not only made me love him but incredibly sympathetic and empathetic towards him. Ironically enough, I absolutely HATE spam; spam emails, phone calls or just ads in general that I have no interest in. Spamton though...he is the exception. Before I realized it, I was hooked to anything about this guy, be it art, fanfics, videos like these and I just find myself craving MORE. It's insane how I laugh at this guy but also want to help him so damn bad. The thought of losing everything in a blink of an eye whether it be conequence of one's own actions or just because...is so damn scary. Nothing lasts forever. But...there is a reason for things not lasting forever. Imagine if Spamton never fell from grace. He is successful all the time. Everything is still there. He has everything. And yet...eventually...all of that loses value. It's...well, garbage. Money cannot buy what he would really need. In fact...he would still be a puppet on a string. Being forced to put on a show, a forced smile, being around people that make you feel alone. Though what had happened to him was terrible...it was a new beginning for Spamton...even if that new beginning stunk (Quite literally). While he couldn't escape his own strings that he need to keep himself up, he would at least be around someone who he can bond with and perhaps make even more friends along the way. What matters is that he won't be alone anymore. And with this newfound fame in the Deltarune/Undertale fandom, I'd say he has already made it big. To quote from a different game franchise, "At the end of everything, hold on to anything." Okay I rambled enough. lol
As a singer who hasnt been able to preform in the last 2 years due to covid who has gone to youtube for my creative outlet, holy heck this video hits different. Heres a comment to help out with the algorithm, your one of my favorite channels, thanks for the good work.
It SCARES me how much you are able to connect to, embody, and even BECOME this character so much to the point where you're both elevating your analysis of him and your connection to him.... it scares me so good Like, we can all relate to the guy on one heck of a deep level as you say, but it's on another level for ya
As someone who was on the Internet in 1997, yeah this lil idiot was an instant hit with me hahaha. I really dig Spamtons humour and daft references. Also I always love an underdog character, especially ones that are complicated and W E I R D. His backstory though makes me really sad, gawd dammit Toby Fox how dya make us get attached to your characters so much lmao
Wow, this was an absolutely brilliant analyzes of Spamtom! I was entirely confused on why this character kept appearing on all my dashboards and decided to research. Your in-depth explanation was very informative. Also WHOOOA "he stares out into the audience but there is no audience" that hits hard. Haha, I relate hard with Spamtom. Amazing video. Faving.
Easily one of the best videos I've seen covering Spamton as a character. It's interesting to see the parallels between him and some folks on this very website! Also, as impressive as that Spamton cosplay is, the first scene where it shows up genuinely unnerved me. 0.0
Spamton is such a spectacularly written character. His tragedy teaches a valuable lesson by making you understand and empatize the unfairness, neglect, desperation, and loneliness of too many people in real life. They get backstabbed and ignored at their lowest point, and that's beyond fucked up.
This is amazing, I've been having trouble figuring out why i like spamton so much. I mostly write characters for animation so i forget to also include their gameplay mechanics. You dissected it beautifully. He really is sucking up to you during that whole first battle. It's genius. Great work!!!
my favorite spamton video to this date, i really wasn't expecting such level of analysis and editing and fucking comedy ( **AND THE TIGER POSTER** ). I think i've gone a little insaner now i think i need to go sit outside or something. It's just really beautiful goddamn.
23:05 It was at that moment that I realized what I was seeing. Like looking into a twisted mirror. I'm always doing my best, but I don't know what to do or where to go. I constantly seek out freedom and independence, but at the same time, there's nothing I fear more. I'm all alone and hopeless to succeed that way. There's nothing I can do without help from the outside. I would be better off as an item, a thing to be owned. Because to be a puppet is to be free of the pain and harshness of choice. As a puppet, nothing you do is your fault, just following orders. As a puppet, you belong to someone and have a purpose.
I never thought the end of the Spamton Neo fight could be spun in a hopeful way for Spamton until you put it the way you did. I think I needed to hear that.
I'm so glad that spamton is getting the attention he deserves as a character. He's been my favorite deltarune character since he first jumped out of that dumpster and Kris has only gotten close because of the angsty implications of their predicament. 10/10 amazing video
I think the reason peoples reaction to lighteners are different is Becuase of what they do in reality The toys seee lighteners as gods or very powerful beings as well to a Ty that’s what a lightener is it’s the god they choose what they do with the toy the make the toys story the toys decisions and fate are controlled by the lighteners Toys are meant to serve lighteners that’s there purpose Soamton is a spam email If he sees a lightened his first reaction would be to scam As that’s his purpose
I'm honestly surprised that Toby probably knew about the charge shot glitch even before Chap2 release, wait until players find and use the exploit, and instead of patching it they made it something that interact in more tangible way with the game for added flavor during Spamton's fight.
One interesting thing about Spamton is that if he knows about the game world he lives in, it stands to reason that he knows exactly what his role in that game He knows that he's just a side character. He knows that any chance he has to be relevant at all depends on whether or not you choose to activate the Spamton NEO fight. For someone who wants to be a "Big Shot", imagine how crippling it must be fully aware that you are just a small, optional side character in a much grander stage. Not even in full control as to whether or not that relevance actually gets granted to him. For Jevil, this allows him peace amongst the chaos. Because his choices don't matter and therefore any consequences he might face aren't real. He's ironically content in the nihilistic chaos whereas a man as ambitious as Spamton fights it at every turn.
@@BlakeSpohn I just find him kinda annoying, especially his attempts at comedy. But if he just focused on the theories then I wouldn't mind him too much.
The tiger interruption killed me x'D. Really good video. You described Spamton's whole thing beautifully, made me laugh several times, and made me emotional by reminding me how freakin sad Spamton's story is! hhhhhh you also pointed out a couple things I still hadn't noticed yet! Thank you!
So many hidden meanings, a puppet that hates its strings but can’t go anywhere or fly without them, spampton locking you in the same situation until you somehow find an exception, selling you things using examples of his life almost as if he’s looking for a salesman to sell him a fix aswell, or just the pulling of his punches him making openings and putting on a good but easy fight as a show because all he wants is to be seen.
Very good video essay. You do a good job of touching on the various different kinds of appeal spamton has in a concise and accessible way. Hope to see more in the future
I haven’t even gotten around to playing deltarune (or a lot of games I want to play through) but goddamn this video is amazing the editing and everything is so good! Hopefully you’re doing well Pyrr
The fact that spampton seemed to be more focused on kris's inner feeling makes me think that the other secret bosses will be focused on the other character's inner feelings.
despite the fact i was playing in a fairly neutral run for my first playthrough, i killed spamton because i decided i wasnt a fan about some shady businessman showing up in a back alleyway to make me to reveal my _anything_. but right as soon as he told me his... advice, i had this feeling my choices had meant i'd just missed out on something i would have liked. this was the point i knew for sure that i needed to do another playthrough, and i played the game like 5 times afterwards i then proceeded to completely forget that maybe, just maybe, the fact that my choice there had consequences (undertale-style) was a really big fucking deal in this game. im sure i wouldnt have killed spamton if i had waited just one turn, but i didnt hesitate to take my very own sweet bargain; keeping my soul to myself, while taking his. so, i proceeded to make an obligatory gex quote ("this is just like watching an NME commercial at J. P. spamley's house") before sealing the deal. i even got some ""cool"" advice for free! and you know what? i've been told i'm bad for killing spamton while playing blind, but i dont care. killing spamton on my first playthrough makes me a free thinker
Thank you for putting into video form what I had difficulty verbally explaining myself. I fell hard for this little trash puppet. Partly because of relatability (years of retail management), partly because of his design. Keep up the awesome work!
Really good video that's enhanced by the personal connection, while still being entertaining and fun, like some of my other favorite videos on the channel.
Another thing that i font think you mentioned is that Kris calls for susie and ralsei, but when Noelle comes, just before, it says, "YOU whispered Noelle's name"
Greetings from a video game developer, myself. Admittedly, I haven't made a ton of progress on the game yet, other than a menu system and various internal stuff.
Honestly Spamton might be my favourite character in video gaming history. Not only does he fit very well into the story, not only is he a very balanced boss, not only is his name a masterpiece, not only is his voice amazing, not only is he a hilarious joy to watch and encounter. But Big Shot is the best thing Toby Fox has ever given us *change my mind*. He also breaks the fourth wall several times which is fun. He seems to be aware that he is in a sort of game and that makes him a really enjoyable character
im gonna be honest, this is the first time I've heard that larger bullets do less damage.. ..but then again, i never really visited that guy's tutorial stuff, unless i wanted to do the extra fights in the dojo.
The entire video was great, from the cut in old ad visuals, to the great script, to the way it was presented, hell, even the "check out my stuff" sale at the end was entertaining and kept me interested. This whole video about spamton's character is very reminiscent of the [[BIG SHOT]] of the hour [[HALF OFF WEEKEND SALE!!]] himself. (get it, because it's a 30 minute long video..... comedy) Also, it's been a while i've left a comment after being so late to something, but i just really enjoyed this video, it really sold me on subscribing to the channel.
Does anyone else think Spamton's character and backstory shares some commonalities with Icarus and the story of Faust? The story of Icarus and his father is old and originates from Greek mythology. In order to escape imprisonment from a tower (in some versions) a set of wings were made for Icarus so he could fly (I think the Father flew in a flying machine of some kind). Icarus was warned by his Father not to fly too close to the sun, but he was also warned not to fly too near to the water below. And what does he do? Icarus flies too close to the sun, the wax melts, the feathers flutter away, he falls into the sea and drowns. In some versions (at least according to wikipedia) Icarus boasts about being greater than some of the Gods and is punished because of his arrogance. Possible moral lessons and themes... -Balance / finding a middle path. Flying too low is dangerous, but so is flying too high. Maybe part of Spamton's problem was wanting too much, expecting too much, not being happy with what he has, being too ambitious. -Arrogance / hubris is bad and could lead to your undoing by a higher power. -Listen to sound advice or don't disobey your parents. -Swap flying too close to the sun with Spamton trying to see too far. The crude mural of a sun, clouds and blue sky suggests he knows about the world Kris comes from because he has seen it. -The unfinished mech has wings that could be interpreted as bird like, I don't think the wings are literally made out of feathers. ((This is probably my projection, I think especially in the snow grave route Spamton kinda makes me think of Starscream from the Transformers. 1) Mech. 2) Obsessed with being a BIG SHOT and obtaining more and more power to become "free." 3) Changing the portraits in the mansion. 4) Liar, swindler and manipulator. 5) Mouthy and boastful, telegraphing his desire to become a BIG SHOT. 6) Both charcters being dramatic with exaggerated mannerisms, voice, facial expressions.)) There are many versions and variations on the story of Faust. Essentially you make a deal with the Devil compromising your morals or exchanging your soul for knowledge and power. -This is ultimately speculative... Maybe Spamton made a Faustian deal with the Devil. Maybe the deal was time based? After a certain amount of time his miraculous ability to generate sales would completely evaporate. Maybe Spamton disobeyed or did something that broke the deal and led to him losing everything. I am not sure what to make of Spamton spending a lot of his time praying in front of the mech... Ny this time I think he realized everything was starting to unravel. Does he believe this mech to be divine, the shell of a God, supernatual, a physical body that a higher power is using as a means of communication? Is he praying for forgiveness for his sins and the deal he made? In some versions the Faust character is irredeemable and in other versions he is redeemed through his own prayer, repentance and the prayers of others. Maybe this is merely a coincidence, but I find it interesting how Noelle's appearance in the dark world is reminiscent of someone dressing like an angel and her battle sprite, at least to me it looks like she is praying. -Spamton was unhappy and desperate... Words that could be used to describe Faust like characters. It's hard to say maybe Spamton from the very beginning was lazy, impulsive, craving easy solutions to problems and never had a strong work ethic. Maybe he never applied himself. But it could just as easily be the opposite. He worked long and hard to perfect the hustle, but he could rarely, if ever make a sale for [insert reasons] ... Darkners not taking him serious and not treating him as an equal because of his height or other quirks. Maybe Spamton was naïve and honest to a fault and working in sales he increasingly came to the realization his ethical sensibilities were holding him back. He has to be willing to do whatever it takes if he wants to succeed and be a BIG SHOT. -Spamton makes some interesting remarks about Noelle... I believe he calls her a "hochi mama," part of me wonders if this is supposed to reference the term "hoochie mama," but given how that is probably too inappropriate for a game that younger aged kids will play he knew he couldn't use that term. I thought I came across a definition that said "hochi" could mean smart. I think some of the earliest versions of the Faust story, the Faust character corrupts a young woman, getting her pregnant and abandoning her and the child and yet in some versions supposedly this woman who was wronged forgives him and prays for his redemption. Doesn't Spamton make some sort derogatory remark about Kris and Noelle being a couple or something? And at the very end of the snow grave route Spamton rips into Kris for calling out for help and the way Kris has used Noelle. The paralells are not exact, they don't line up exactly, but I think there may be something here that is worth a closer examination. **I am not an expert on all things Faust. I read a few sections of a wiki article that came up for Faust.
Deltarune has a real knack for being unnerving. It's really fun and funny and you love the characters but it's fantastic at giving you undercurrents that something is *wrong* here. Spamton's first few appearances do such a good job of bringing that feeling to the forefront, making you uncomfortable and knowing that anyone with good sense would steer clear of all of this. And, like the Snowgrave route which he thrives in, that's exactly what makes pursuing it further so irresistible. He needs this, and you need to see why.
Oh gosh, this analysis is an absolute banger. pretty good, but there was one very tiny but significant detail missed, and I don't blame your for it since it's second nature to not distinguish it in a game, but
Noelle doesn't answer Kris' call for help
She answers YOUR call
@@FaelumbreProject It certainly feels deliberate though since Kris calls out for Susie and Ralsei while you call for Noelle
I feel like the "your call" thing was fully on purpose

I'm actually worried that no one in any other chapter will live up to how good of a character Spamton was.

Jevil is the loneliness
Spamton is the desperation
…I wonder what the other secret boss fights will represent
Probably jealousy
Remorse?
Apathy?
well, my personal view is that all the secret bosses will all represent some type of freedom
jevil is supposed to be physical freedom, the literal definition of it
spamton is supposed to be the freedom to make choices
my personal theory is that in one of the next chapters, the character you first made that was discarded would possibly represent the freedom of self expression?
Not to mention, there's a theme of being discarded and useless.
Jevil is the Joker Card which is famous in poker for being useless.
And Spamton is literal spam emails that are very commonly thrown out.
I like how for the moments when Spamton’s text would censor itself via ad catchphrases, you do the same for the video via using an actual ad (or at the very least, making up your own ads to splice into the video at the right times). You articulated so good what makes this video great, I love it
what i love about toby fox's writing that was barely touched on in this video is the character connections and chemistry. it was briefly mentioned with mettaton and jevil having a connection to spamton, the rest of the undertale and deltarune cast have so many parallels and connections that it becomes this huge intertangled web of chemistry. toby fox really knows how to write for chemistry
Telling that in Undertale, where everyone knows each other, Spamton is all alone.

Fun fact: When Spamton's eyes go static, it's like he's finally in control for half a second, almost like he's never been in control.

Kris is a horrible mirror of Spamton, the example of what a guide that doesn't lose focus on their puppet can do, while Spamton is an example of what happens when that guide leaves.
...Speaking as an artist who's desparate and has yet to attain even the modest success Pyrr has... god some of this was just too damn real.

Just because you bought my [Commemorative Ring]."
In the normal route, he says to Kris, "Now's your chance to be a BIG SHOT!!
To quote from a different game franchise, "At the end of everything, hold on to anything."
Okay I rambled enough. lol
Have you ever touched grass before ?
@@asce4600 Yes I have and it's very lovely when it's warm out. I am just being a nerd.
As a singer who hasnt been able to preform in the last 2 years due to covid who has gone to youtube for my creative outlet, holy heck this video hits different. Heres a comment to help out with the algorithm, your one of my favorite channels, thanks for the good work.
I feel your pain since I'm pretty much in the same situation.. 😔
It SCARES me how much you are able to connect to, embody, and even BECOME this character so much to the point where you're both elevating your analysis of him and your connection to him.... it scares me so good
Like, we can all relate to the guy on one heck of a deep level as you say, but it's on another level for ya
The ending bit got me good not gonna lie, I did not expect that
spamton g spamton
is the perfect character

Faving.
That was a brilliant video, both the analysis and the production value put into making several of the sections just exude that Spamton quality.
Easily one of the best videos I've seen covering Spamton as a character. It's interesting to see the parallels between him and some folks on this very website!
Also, as impressive as that Spamton cosplay is, the first scene where it shows up genuinely unnerved me. 0.0
1:41 Apparently TH-cam's captions share the same sense of humor as Asgore himself
They're just working (surprisingly well) with what they're given.
Spamton is such a spectacularly written character. His tragedy teaches a valuable lesson by making you understand and empatize the unfairness, neglect, desperation, and loneliness of too many people in real life.
They get backstabbed and ignored at their lowest point, and that's beyond fucked up.
Spamton is constantly performing in the hope someone will be watching?
No wonder I relate to him so much
This is amazing, I've been having trouble figuring out why i like spamton so much.
When i first saw Spamton, i already knew all too well he was gonna become the new favorite character of the fan-base i just knew it.
I'm so glad that spamton is getting the attention he deserves as a character. He's been my favorite deltarune character since he first jumped out of that dumpster and Kris has only gotten close because of the angsty implications of their predicament. 10/10 amazing video
I think the reason peoples reaction to lighteners are different is Becuase of what they do in reality
The toys seee lighteners as gods or very powerful beings as well to a Ty that’s what a lightener is it’s the god they choose what they do with the toy the make the toys story the toys decisions and fate are controlled by the lighteners
Toys are meant to serve lighteners that’s there purpose
Soamton is a spam email
If he sees a lightened his first reaction would be to scam
As that’s his purpose
I really should have added commas if I knew you’d pin this
SOAMTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
op: **describes how easy spams fight is**

I love the editing so much, every ad inserted between the lines of the analysis is so good 👌🏼
criminally underated video. the editing is amazing
What a great analaysis, and great editing and cosplay.
I'm honestly surprised that Toby probably knew about the charge shot glitch even before Chap2 release, wait until players find and use the exploit, and instead of patching it they made it something that interact in more tangible way with the game for added flavor during Spamton's fight.
I've seen most of the theories around spamton and this is definitely my favorite.

An amazing video about an amazing character, what a [HANDSOME DEAL]!!!
One interesting thing about Spamton is that if he knows about the game world he lives in, it stands to reason that he knows exactly what his role in that game
He knows that he's just a side character.
I literally said aloud while watching this video, “this guy us better than Game Theory.”
Not a very high bar to clear lmaoooooooo
@@kingofcrap4414 how? i quite like matpats editing and flow.
@@BlakeSpohn I just find him kinda annoying, especially his attempts at comedy. But if he just focused on the theories then I wouldn't mind him too much.
Nice video man. One of the best on Spamton I've seen
The tiger interruption killed me x'D. Really good video. You described Spamton's whole thing beautifully, made me laugh several times, and made me emotional by reminding me how freakin sad Spamton's story is! hhhhhh you also pointed out a couple things I still hadn't noticed yet! Thank you!
And the tiger poster!
I love the way this is edited!! Thank you for the video, it's very well done
I just wanted to give some love to the transition at 2:03, I love how you synced the falling with the battle start.
I literally squealed when you said “Specil Deal”. I am too obsessed with Spamton.
despite the fact i was playing in a fairly neutral run for my first playthrough, i killed spamton because i decided i wasnt a fan about some shady businessman showing up in a back alleyway to make me to reveal my _anything_. but right as soon as he told me his... advice, i had this feeling my choices had meant i'd just missed out on something i would have liked. this was the point i knew for sure that i needed to do another playthrough, and i played the game like 5 times afterwards
i then proceeded to completely forget that maybe, just maybe, the fact that my choice there had consequences (undertale-style) was a really big fucking deal in this game.
im sure i wouldnt have killed spamton if i had waited just one turn, but i didnt hesitate to take my very own sweet bargain; keeping my soul to myself, while taking his. so, i proceeded to make an obligatory gex quote ("this is just like watching an NME commercial at J. P. spamley's house") before sealing the deal. i even got some ""cool"" advice for free!
and you know what? i've been told i'm bad for killing spamton while playing blind, but i dont care. killing spamton on my first playthrough makes me a free thinker
"the spamton fight is for everyone and fairly difficult to lose by design"
ME PROCEEDING TO DIE BY HIM ON THE FIRST TRY 💀
That spamton cosplay tho! *chefs kiss*
Thank you for putting into video form what I had difficulty verbally explaining myself. I fell hard for this little trash puppet. Partly because of relatability (years of retail management), partly because of his design. Keep up the awesome work!
How can all of your videos still blow me away with sheer attention to detail and quality?
Really good video that's enhanced by the personal connection, while still being entertaining and fun, like some of my other favorite videos on the channel.
This video has absolute god tier editing, hats off to you Mr. For
Thank you very much! If you like the editing in this one I'd recommend Wizpig and Donkey Konga next for more of the crazy visual style
Another thing that i font think you mentioned is that Kris calls for susie and ralsei, but when Noelle comes, just before, it says, "YOU whispered Noelle's name"
Man, you just went all out on this video.
How very Spamton G. Spamton of you!
How very [Exclusive Official Spamton] of you

Greetings from a video game developer, myself.
Admittedly, I haven't made a ton of progress on the game yet, other than a menu system and various internal stuff.

I am scared
His cosplay is pretty good, I must admit it.
(get it, because it's a 30 minute long video..... comedy)
Also, it's been a while i've left a comment after being so late to something, but i just really enjoyed this video, it really sold me on subscribing to the channel.
Spamton doesnt want to be a “puppet” and Kris doesn’t want to be our protagonist… hmmm
6) Both charcters being dramatic with exaggerated mannerisms, voice, facial expressions.))
There are many versions and variations on the story of Faust.
His hairline is out of control
Coming back to this after the wild ride that was the Spamton Sweepstakes charity and stream for some normality if you can believe it lol.
"There is no audience" sent such a chill the first time. Truly wild.
13:15 at this exact moment, my browser crashed. im not kidding.
Oh gosh, this analysis is an absolute banger.
I love that you looked at the meta story-telling elements through the mechanics _(He literally sells you on a side quest, oh my gosh-),_ not to mention the amazing editing and scriptwriting.
I love this lil trash salesman so much...he tries so hard...and he's a [big shot] in my book.
