Double stops are essentially when you play two notes at the same time. Double stops also mean playing two notes of the same chord at the same time. It's kind of a weird name since you don't actually stop the guitar from making noise, or anything like that. In this lesson, Gary will show you double stops and how to use them by playing three different types. Double stops are great to use in lead play, riffs, and more. Don't miss out on this lesson!

Wow man! Two minutes in and you just provided me the biggest aha moment in my quest to get better at improvisational double stop playing...playing through the whole scale in double stops! Awesome!
Rock on!
Thirds-5:00
Sixths-8:00
Root on top-9:40
Thanks Gary. The double stop lesson is just the rut buster I needed!
That was one of the clearest, most helpful guitar lessons I've ever watched. I love that you didn't explain a simple concept, then demonstrate it with a super complex solo. You played examples that I can actually see myself playing with a little practice. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Agreed ❤.
Whe you play the higher notes it sounded like Mexican ranchero music Beautiful 😍
Go make my taco, Paco. No one cares
@@jduder no one cares what?
Why did u responded then
It does sound like that. I dig it.
Yeah…that’s becauce of the Mexican Jazzmaster.
Nice overview of double stops. I use them all the time. I don't think double stops is a weird term - just not typical for us fretted instrument players. Stopping is another term for pressing the string against the fretboard - usually used when talking about fretless instruments - violin, cello, etc. I suppose you could call double stops "dyads", but that's discussion for a different day. :-)
It is extremely common for guitar to say double stops!
Thanks man, double stops have always been a bit of mystery to me
one of the best lessons on double stops i have seen thanks very helpful
You simplified things I have been struggling to understand for a long time in just 10 minutes, awesome stuff
so awesome! Cheers.
Can't wait to get home and practice this. Been looking for a good double stop video for ages. Thanks man
Love that Mexican or Latin guitar sound, they're my favorite. Thanks.
Right on!
Excellent lesson brotha. I will be watching this indefinitely until it is cellular. Subscribed instantly.
✌🏽❤️🤟🏽
Thanks for the sub!
The thing I find interesting with the minor pent double stops, is that you're harmonising each note of the minor pent with it's perfect fifth, except for the 5th, which ends up harmonised with it's min6. So, in the Amin example, the 5 note (E) is harmonized with a C (E's min6) and not B. Keen to try it out with that variation and see how it sounds
Damn man.. Thank you so much
Keep going man
Use to improvise in G using Gravity(J. Mayer) as backing track
This is just what my country quest needed thanks
Great lesson. Thanks from Madrid

This lesson was extremely helpful, the only I could find that answered my questions on double stops. Thanks for the great lesson

Great lesson. thank you
Great lesson, thanks.
Glad you liked it!
when playing lead guitar lines and double stops on the guitar aswell as includings scales in guitar playing is it important to actually include and play the main root note of each chord of the chord progression in order of the song aswell as adding extra notes inbetween and extra double stops inbetween to help form lead guitar melody lines for lead guitar ? is this a good approach ? or have i actually got the wrong idea ?
I just found out what these are called today and ive been using them forever .....learn a chord and playing it as many different ways/variants as possible was how i happened upon the thing.
I told myself i was doing dual leads before .....apples and oranges 😂😂
Thx ❤. Happy new year Gary .
Thanks for watching!
7:40 was some Allman brothers sound
Very helpful lesson.. Thanks a lot
thank you man learned a lot from this
Year 33 notes apart and a fourth is 4 notes of power being the scales so you counting up the scale the 1234567 notes
This is a good video
YOG
I'd like to learn pedal steel-style double stops like on the G and high E strings. You almost got to it at the end but not in a country idiom.
Thanks
Why you were teaching the etiquette to double stops what I'm doing is playing the 12 Bar Blues and working out of my minor pentatonic box I don't understand the etiquette all I know is is 3rd 4th and 5th etcetera so what I'm doing is taking my notes and going 333 spaces above for a third or four or five etcetera
Is this connected to 2 tone music, it is an old genre?
Thanks, very useful.
What is that red thing around your guitar neck?
A fretwrap that mutes the strings behind your nut. You can also put a peice of foam under your strings behind the nut to mute them
Chiquitita!
Double stops = two notes (with in the chord)? I’ve always called them “intervals”. Am I, or am I not understanding?
It's a term that was carried over from the violin. But you're right, it means playing two notes.
What is the difference with a power chord? I''m confused :(
I'd love to help answer this Q. Can you be a bit more specific?
@@GuitarTricks Thanks mate, I meant, is double stop the same concept than power chord? I see people talking about both things but I am not sure if it means the same?
If a double stop is playing two notes simultaneously, then I think yes a power chord is a double stop?
So, all power chords are double stops, but not all double stops are power chords. Would this be correct?
Power cords are the root and the 5th. Double stops I don't know. They might or might not.
How do you learn to do that? Cool.
Lots of practice!
It looks like Advance guitar players! I'm sorry, in my opinion, u need to explain a little bit slow.
But, it's a good material to learn.
Thanks.
You need to practice more... you should know how to connect scales.. then you'll realize that it make sense
It's easy when you know how to connect scales
@@flaviojr3605 I know how to connect scales. The thing is (double stops) and to learn that.
IThe lesson is for more advanced playing. It's really for people who already understand and know how to form chords and scales across the whole fret board.
Flatwound strings and half rounds strings get rid of the squeaky sound.
Hello Gary Humbucker.
ZORDON?!
So are your playing 2 strings at once?
Yes
🤯
These are NOT double stops. Wjat he's showing you is called *parallel motion.* 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths and octaves can be played together. Examples of Double Stops are 1) Universal Love -Lenny White 2) Muff - John Tropea 3) Hocus Pocus -Gary Hoei.
China Girl intro is double stops.
I'd subcribe but ive been subscribed 😎
should be called double notes, not double stops, right? Jaja
double stop is a terrible term. who named this technique and why did everyone just went along with it
This term comes from the violin way way back. "Stopping" is simply putting your finger down on the string, to produce a note other than an open string. So technically, it refers to using your fingers on both of those strings. This term was carried over to guitar.
too much information
barre chords at 4min..im out
bclmax barre chords are easy bruh.
Btw, I have the N-word pass but I don’t want to offend you if you’re black.
