Really interesting. I've heard that Harmon direct positive is tricky enough on its own, my hats off to you for developing it in caffenol.

Interesting experiments. Really like the tonal quality of the prints in Caffenol.

I’m very happy to see that you keep experimenting and showing us your results ! Thank you joe. I use Parodinal ( homemade rodinal )for developing my paper.. have you tried ? It’s even darker than the caffenol ! Haha

Do you think regular instant coffee would work any different the the Folgers Crystals? I am not a coffee drinker so am not familiar with the . various forms of instant coffee. Very informative video, thank!

Not a coffee drinker either, always assumed all instant was crystal based and always heard the cheaper the better, my wife likes caffenol and uses the generic 'local food store' brand of instant crystals.
Similar to tea toning many alt processes, the cheaper the tea the better.. Thankfully, not sure I could waste a good tea on art.

Any kind of instant coffee works, I happened to buy Folgers when I tried it years ago.

Very interesting video and I really like the images you produced here! Traditional bought developer contains a preservative whereas caffenol doesn’t - it only contains the developing agent (two actually - caffeic acid and ascorbic acid) and an accelerator (washing soda). This is why it doesn’t last as long however I have heard if you top up the ingredients and add an extra minute you can use it the next day. I also read about imago direct positive paper that without pre-flash shooting at something incredibly bright (like the sun) triggers solarisation so maybe this behaves similarly? I’m wondering when you say a strong fix and a long rinse how long this would actually be and what you do to make a ‘strong’ fix? Thanks for the video :)

I have had mixed results with this paper but mostly due to my guess work for in camera preflash and exposure. I guess the paper is responsive to part of the light spectrum (UV) I can't measure with my Seconic meter. When I get the preflash and exposure time right, the paper produces good and many times interesting results. I have been using Rodinal 1+100 stand development in my Stearman 4x5 tank. I know you have the tank and perhaps some Rodinal, have you considered trying this combination for a video? Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your photographic experiments!

I haven't tried Rodinal 1 + 100 with paper, but have tried more conventional film developer dilutions with paper, and find it requires excessive time to gain adequate density in the highlights. I prefer a dilute paper developer solution instead.

does any kind of washing soda work? i’m not familiar with washing sodas.

      Sodium carbonate works. Not bicarbonate.

Good tests, Joe. I like mixing my own developers, my favorite is Ansco 135 - a warm tone paper developer. Probably hasn't been made in 50 years. A few base chemicals and you can make a bunch of developers, even D76. Though for D76 and R09 I'd rather buy it and make sure to help them stay on the market.
Is Harmon orthochromatic? I've seen the coloration on the missus' face with ortho processes before. The solarization on the other hand...

Yep, Harman is ortho chromatic, gives that 19th century tone.

What iso do you rate it when shooting?
Also have you tried any toning afterwards, like selenium?

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

ISO depends on the time of year, how much blue & UV in the sky. Generally start at 3-6 and test from there. Because of its narrow exposure latitude I always recommend doing your own calibration tests.
      It does selenium tone, slight.

My wife and I were at the Houston Art Museum and she discovered a pinhole camera in a book. We are experimenting with it to introduce our granddaughter to "old school" photography. It comes with paper and a caffenol recipe and recommendations for developing. Here is one link: www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/11/this-book-is-a-camera/
