    This is so cool!!! I just started developing my own film, I gotta try this out

      Developing film is super fun! It's the best way to feel like a mad scientist in your own home I think!

    I love Caffenol. My first go at developing was using it, without vitamin C. I think I stand developed it for an hour, and it worked like a charm, aside from the fact I used colour film and all the photos were blue, and took a LOT of scanning.

      Very cool! Thanks for sharing, I love the amount of things people use to develop film.

    I knew about Caffeinol but it's been on my bucket list far too long. I'm inspired that you've crossed it off of your to-do list.

      Thank you! I definitely recommend just going out and experimenting! That's how I even got this far in developing film in the first place haha

    Most major cities water can be used to "develop" film these days. And I mean outdoor water. results may vary.

    PaRodinal is another DIY developer that is extremely cheap and easy to make. The results are awesome and it lasts for years too! Tylenol, Drain Cleaner, and Sodium Sulfite is all you need.

    Ha, now that I tried Caffenol today the youtube algorithm recommends your video just a few hours later :D, but now I know why the Coffee works as well as the proper developer!
    I also used almost the same recipe as you, but with 54g washing soda, 16g Vitamin-C and also 40g of coffee

      @BriannaDignard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Perfect! I'm so glad that TH-cam algorithm came through for you like that! I'll have to try out more recipes and experiment more to get some better results!

      @@BriannaDignard Thank you for the reply! The next recipe I'm itching to try is Caffenol C-H with added Potassium-Bromide for high ISO film, there's some Ilford 3200 I can use for testing, let's see how far I can push it, both literally and figuratively.
      Are you planning on making a video about homebrew fixers too to complement the Coffenol, so you'd get a set of tutorial for complete DIY home development process set up?

    Can you store your caffenol for another time processing later? eg. months?

    • @BriannaDignard
      @BriannaDignard  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! The general consensus is to use caffenol pretty immediately after mixing it up because it doesn't contain any preservatives and the reducing agents will decompose over time. From looking at a few forums, some people have stored it in airtight containers and managed to reuse it but it's not guaranteed to have a consistent result.

    I sacrificed one roll of film just to use it as a testers of my chemicals. I do sometimes forget when I mixed them and this helps me to make sure they still work. I develop about one frame of that sacrificed film and watch how fast it develops. it goes from opaque to (very dark) transparent fairly fast. I think that you made your developer bit too strong and you washed away most if the silver oxide including the film markings around the perforation. Love the video! Alright! Got to go shopping for some coffee!!

    • @BriannaDignard
      @BriannaDignard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the advice! That may be an issue too because film can be so sensitive sometimes haha. This was also like the first roll I shot with this camera and only my third roll ever shot so I can't leave out the fact that I was just getting used to all the settings.

    Why the mask? The whole point of Caffeinol is not only that its cheap and easy to make but also it does not give off noxious fumes

    • @BriannaDignard
      @BriannaDignard  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was using a fixer that I didn't want to breathe in and I didn't feel like taking my mask on and off throughout the process.

  • @TitoNovelianto
    @TitoNovelianto 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Is the fume from the solutions still dangerous to breathe in? I'm under the impression that they are less "dangerous" that the usual developer solutions.
    Sorry, I don't know anything about developing films but I love your content! ❤❤

    • @BriannaDignard
      @BriannaDignard  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you and excellent question! The fumes from the caffenol should be okay to breathe in. It isn't the best smell, but not the worst either. I just continued to wear a mask for the duration of the process because the last chemical I used, the fixer, is more dangerous to inhale and I didn't want to bother with taking it on and off throughout the process

  • @porkona

    Uh, am I supposed to wear a gas mask when developing film? Because I don't 😮

    • @BriannaDignard
      @BriannaDignard  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think the general consensus is to make sure you have as much ventilation as possible in your developing area. We have a vent fan and a small window in our darkroom but just to be extra sure we still wear a respiratory mask. It's also nice for mixing powdered chemicals.

    This is so interesting! This is totally off the cuff so it may be completely off, but it makes me wonder if you can use something similar instead of hydrogen peroxide as a developer for cyanotypes on fabric? There’s probably some chemistry there that’s beyond me 😆 🤷‍♀️ Google AI says you can use instant coffee on cyanotyped fabric, but it occurs to me that you could probably dye pretty much any natural fibers with coffee, so I’m not sure if it means it would have any more of an effect on it than that.
    I have some of your videos queued up to listen to as I work, but I keep feeling like I need to stop to comment or make notes to myself for later because it’s so interesting! 😆

    • @BriannaDignard
      @BriannaDignard  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I saw on another comment that you did see my cyanotype video so I will reference that. The cyanotype turns blue and white when you rinse it due to reactions with oxygen so that is why you could use hydrogen peroxide because it readily decomposes into water and oxygen gas. From my own brief google search, it seems that people use coffee to change the coloring of their cyanotype once it's developed rather than using it to develop the cyanotype. The coffee shouldn't give off any oxygen like the hydrogen peroxide would. Hope this makes sense!
