Wharton is the future of England's no 6 role. Why not play him now? Gives Rice a bit more license to get forward. If you disagree, please just watch the video Palace released a couple of days ago. The only doubt is the high pressure of tournament football for England, but he adapted to the Premier League like a duck to water.
Wharton looks really good, but look at the big picture. Would he be better than Rice as a 6? Probably not. Would he be better than Mainoo as an 8? Probably not.
@connorbutler5900 Good point. But is Rice better at 8 than Mainoo? He probably is. I have heard that Arteta prefers Rice as an 8. Wharton is a perfect fit for number 6 role. Having said that, Mainoo is also very good and would be happy to see him play. Good to have options
I agree mainoo is not a sitter, it's like saying you wouldn't play Bellingham or foden there cus they're not defensively aware. But how in the same breath can you say mainoo can't get back and defend and then mention trent should play there who's defensive awareness doesn't exist either. If you want someone to just sit next to rice the maybe Wharton is the guy. Mainoo is far too good on the ball to be told to sit.
And now we see why Ince was never a good manager.

I'm afraid so. Paul Ince often reduces football back to its basics. He missed that Phoden, Gordon and Saka, can all run in behind. They are all quick enough and possess a greater game intelligence than Rashford.

Loved Incey and his time at United, but ever since he was booted out from the club, he always held this grudge against us. He tries to somehow cover it up a bit, but we all know the hate is there

Have you watched United this season? It doesn’t matter who plays in midfield none of them can get back to recover. The gaps between defence, midfield and attack are so great unless you’re prime Usain Bolt you’ve got no chance!! He did also completely boss the FA cup final though so he has to start for me.

Maino was the weak link. He is absolutely shocking.
He hardly gets a mention, but Joe Gomez could certainly do a job in all back four positions.
I'm a LIverpool supporter, and I wouldn't have Gomez anywhere near the England squad, he's got soooooooooo many mistakes in him and his defending is second rate. All he really has has is pace, but it's not Walker pace. I also wouldn't have Trent at RB for similar reasons, he's an absolute liability when isolated in defensive positions.

Mainoo, Gallagher, Trent and Foden can all contribute in the midfield. I would play Trent right back. Kyle Walker as a centerback. Foden/ Palmer as no 10. Rice and Mainoo as a double pivot. Bellingham as a 10 is also an option. I would start Gordon and Saka as wingers.
Yes, if only a football team consisted of 12 or 13 players. Not so easy to fit them in with only 11 players.

Mainoo has done OK? 😂 Mental. The recovery runs are because there's no 6 behind him and he ran the midfield for England in his first start and was just motm in an FA Cup final against Rodri, KDB and Kovacic. Think he's done better than OK

Mainoo is absolutely the answer, Big time charlie is just bitter that he got binned off. Phil Foden off the left allowing him to be positionally fluid interchanging with Bellingham and whoever plays off the right. Rice and Mainoo taking turns to sit in front of the defence. Trent instead of walker at RB also joining midfield when we have possession. Please please please be brave ffs Southgate
What about wharton?? If mainoo is the answer then wharton is too. Played against Liverpool and man united and absolutely dominated them (which 1 game mainoo played in) is it because he plays for palace??

Wharton is an insane talent, honestly maybe even more talented than Mainoo.. but its a different position hes being asked to fill, England want a midfielder that can allow declan rice to do the job that Wharton would be (connecting the defense to the attack) whilst Mainoo OR GALLAGHER is just running around the pitch, helping defensively and dribbling/press resistance
Wharton can also fill the dribbling/press resistance role but to a lesser extent and IMO it takes away his star qualities that SHOULD get him a huge move this summer @@adamboow8299

Shearer was not "Bang out of form" in '96 (as Paul said). He hadn't scored for England for awhile, but his League form was fine, as always. He actually scored 31 League goals that season '95-'96

I seem to remember England worrying about who should play up front, like nobody was performing for them. They had Shearer, Cole and Fowler, among others.. all having a recent history of scoring 30+ league goals, but in the media there was real concern about who will score the goals for them!

My team would be based on a floating defence and mid field, GK Pickford. LB Shaw. CH Stone. RB Walker. IRM Alexander Arnold. ILM Rice. OR Saka. IR Foden. CF Kane. IL Bellingham. OL Gordon.
It’s just a pity that Grealish isn’t playing, he did create the two of the goals against Bosnia and I’m sure he would have been an asset to my first choice eleven.
There are 3 or 4 players in the squad I don't actually know who they play for. How good are Branthwaite, Quansah and Wharton?
Very good. Quansah has a great passing range for a defender, Wharton has great awareness and is really good at spotting a pass, Branthwaite is just a good all round strong defender.
Mainoo is 3x the player the guvnor ever was. And the guv wasn’t bad at all.

Ince was one of the best midfielders of his era in England, but I have issue with seeing English players from the late 1980s and 1990s criticising English players of this modern era when they these new English players are far superior to them technically and tactically.

Are all nations taking 4 goalkeepers? If we only took 3, which is surely plenty, could have taken Rashford anyway. Surely Rashford over Henderson or Trafford is better for squad depth
Casemiro and eriksen are on way out ..Mainoo is all u have left, so sign Amrabat for squad depth plus another new DM.. for long United have lacked a destroyer midfielder. Amrabat played that cdm role so well in United's final 4 games including squeezing out City players..
Alot of man united fan here hitting on Ince because of mainoo, this's a major tournament and not a try and error thing. This's the reason this England team always trophyless cuz alot of the fans put pressure on the young players when they are not fully ready to take huge responsibility.
Young players putting up form in few games for their clubs shouldn't be the reasons people will want them to take a huge role going into such tournament that got alot of experienced teams. Mainoo is a good young player, but got zero experience of a major tournament like the euros; it's unfortunate most of you don't learn from past experiences.
The likes of Theo Walcott, jack Wilshire, Danny welbeck and alot more young players were given this same huge responsibility at a younger age when they weren't fully there. England got eliminated many times from tournament due to lack of experienced, yet they still moving on the same path.
England dont need two 6s. None of the top teams England players play for use two holding 6s so they can all adapt to playing with just one 6. England need to play on the front foot to get their best results

Well if Gareth didn’t have to listen to the nonsense in the media, we’d still have Hendo in the team. Still can’t believe he’s not made the squad. It’s huge blow for us, and I just hope we can pull together and get some leadership going in his absence. I don’t really see Kane or Maguire as talkers, so that’s where we need a top player like Hendo to come in and organise everyone.
Oh well, let’s just hope the midfield doesn’t crumble! Even Kalvin has been omitted, and Gareth knows that he’s another top player that can be relied upon.

Paul Ince, you know Alan Shearer he was bang out of form... in the league.... That season he scored 37 /48 games and then following season 28 /40 what the hell is Ince on about.
I think he means he was out of form in international games. I think Ince has a bias for Rashford. I think Rashford is a good player but not England level and if anyone Grealish is the next player to bring in.

with this squad England have already loss in quarter final. Club form doesn't matter. its about ability to create things. Palmer, Foden, Bowen and Saka come small in big games.

England always lose tournaments because they can't control & dictate the tempo in midfield. They've always produced good attacking players and excellent defenders. It will be the same this year imo. Rice isn't a technical baller and neither is Bellingham. Bellingham is dynamic and aggressive but he's not gonna control a midfield. His game is supporting the attack, like a Steven Gerrard. All the technical players like Foden and Palmer are attacking players. Mainoo is technical but he's arguably too young and they won't drop one of Saka, Bellingham, Palmer, Foden.
Bellingham is incredibly technically gifted.

I grew up idolizing Ince's tenacity and ball IQ and he is destroying those sentiments with his rather salty attitude towards United as a whole..I mean everytime this guy opens his mouth about the club, it seems to carry a very negative tone without any proper bias or balance...what a shame 😮

If the English team wants to win this tournament they will play the trailed and tested team, none of these so-called young prospects, but knowing the English fans their sentimentality will kill football logic .
Southgate is English football's weakest link. He is more like a politician than a football manager and likes to please the media is far more concerned about things like 'diversity and inclusion' than winning. Mainoo has got a few headlines recently and ticks the right boxes so he has been chosen for the squad despite being inexperienced and totally unprepared for a major international competition.

Truth be told, Mainoo is too slow when making those recovery runs. Marvelous on the ball but is he really good at doing the dirty work like Gallagher's bulldog mentality?, I mean the way Olise strolled past him and scored 🙆🏾♂️!!, you really need a bully for that role, a feisty 1, a destroyer, a game reader, a leader, a back line protector, and I'm simply saying the boy is too young to face tricky speed blazers and it's just a fact.

Mainoo is good enough to start but I do agree with one of his points which was Mainoo recovery runs.
Not sure if its fatigue as a youngster in a team that so wide open defensive or that Mainoo lacks the engine to cover or get back.
His style is very smooth and is very efficient with his passing, he has the physicality to be a good ball winner and has shown it.
But the role England would want from him, he would need to have great discipline, physicality and have the athleticism to get around the pitch.
Mainoo has struggled in that aspect when the team loses the ball, he can be caught so high up the pitch and doesn't have the athleticism + engine to get back.
Mainoo is more of a box to box with qualities of a deeplying playmaker.
The issue is Bellingham + Foden already offer that in this team & purpose of adding him is for the balance of attacking qualities and defensive qualities.
His first start v Belgium, Mainoo played great but the team was exposed on the counter whenever he pushed up & vacated the space.
He left Rice exposed defensively on the counter.
Mainoo was picking up the ball from right wing position, AM position and wasn't very disciplined.
Mainoo was great in possesion and England looked threatening and he helped alot to start the attacks.
Is England willing to give up defensive solidity for potential improved attacking build up, cause thats the trade off with Mainoo as of right now.
Any player would struggle to recover given the space between UTDs midfield and defence.
It’s common sense, when they changed the system against Arsenal and kept it and used it against City, he was never caught out, he was always there to defend and receive the ball
