    The Papenburg sisters were beautiful ferries. I travelled on 3 of them on the Vasabåtarna routes between Sweden and Finland in the early 80's (Botnia Express 2, Wasa Express 2 and 3). Nice cildhood memories.

    Rip you were a great ship that served us many years. The new boat may be new but it sucks

      How is the journey across? Is it very choppy? Bad for people with sea sickness?

    She was built for Viking Line as m/s Apollo for the Kapellskär-Mariehamn-Nådendal route.

    Oh wow! I am almost lost for words, JustFerries.......
    A couple of scenes in this video reminded me of crossings on Corbiere to the Channel Islands from Portsmouth...1987/88...the colour of the sea (no icebergs though !!!!), the coastline at a very quick glance and the lively sea-keeping of this pioneer "Papenburg Sister".
    I am sure her service with Woodward Group will be her last, but it's a lovely touch that she is operating for them as Apollo.....her original Viking Line name!
    Fantastic work, can't thank you enough !

      Thank you, Andy. I'm also sure this ship's life will end soon. This ferry is a contrast to today's transport world. It is now 48 years old - which ferry in Europe is that old? APOLLO is still an indispensable means of transport between Newfoundland and Quebec / Labrador. Did its builders expect it in 1969/1970?

      I think it's a testament to the build quality of this ship from the Joseph Meyer yard.
      In 1988 when I was 14 I was talking to one of her senior crew members and he said she was a very strong ship. Even back then I didn't doubt what he was saying.

      @JustFerriesOfficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations. 1974's a good year, and so am I :-). APOLLO's long life is definitely unique and shows that you can also operate successfull with old ships. I would still be interested to know what the maintenance condition is inside, so tanks, structure and so on...

      Sadly, you were right. The Papenburg sisters were some of the prettiest ferries ever built.

    Nice Video! She is looking a bit rough, but maybe her internals are still ok... Great to see the ferries around Canada, its not an area often seen by ferry lovers.

    Great video! But i'm sad to see all the rust everywhere. I traveled many times with her between 1970 and 1976 between Sweden and Åland when she was in the Viking Line fleet.

    • @nicrobertstech
      @nicrobertstech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alpearson9158 unfortunately she was sold off to the Quebec government after a new ship came into replace her in the Straits not long after this video was taken, shortly after she struck the dock twice and after an investigation it was determined she was not fit for duty. The ship was rusting from the inside out and it was a miracle she hadn't already sank. after attempts to sink her as an artificial reef failed due to the amount of asbestos found in the vessel, she was sold off to Inda and scraped.

    Took this Ferry about 12 years ago wonderful trip. We saw lots of whales and some dolphins. More than we saw on a whale watching cruise, so save your money if you are taking this ferry you don’t need to go on a whale watching cruise because this is better.
