Through the years, this film has meant so many things to me. Now in old age, it brings me to tears...reminding me yet again, of the many losses of my life. Deeply felt losses that one cannot seem to recover from.
+Angelica Goldstein But, at the same time, your life has been blessed by all the wonderful people....who you now miss. You have truly had a wonderful life.
Angela, You are still here because god wanted it to be this way. You have to use your experiences and knowledge and teach or help younger ones around you. There are no accidents , just being here is a gift............. BAD RICE .... BAD RICE
I saw this wonderful movie in 1955 at the movie theater in Coleman Barracks (near Mannheim, Germany). I was serving with the 95th AAA Battalion. Never forgot it. Thanks for uploading.
Hong Kong is no more !! Treasure these images. I remembered Nancy Kwan and Bruce Lee came to my shop one day. She was looking for washers and he was curious about the first generation of VCR made by Phillips, half the size of a dish washer !! 4 months after his "THE BIG BOSS" came out. Nicest people !!
The opening shot with the little pagoda and balcony was filmed at 41 Conduit Road in Mid-Levels in a Chinese millionaire's house that later became the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondent's Club. It was demolished in the late 1960's to make way for a high-rise apartment complex called Realty Gardens (I lived there for 8 years in the 1970's without realizing the connection of the site with the film!). The hill-top scene with the tree was filmed in California and not in Hong Kong at all. A great film.
Yes, the moment I saw the hilltop scene I knew it was in California! So many movies were using sights in California mostly for cost savings, and expedience!
This movie was the ultimate of its time. It allowed all of us to FALL IN LOVE AGAIN, it gave us Hope, it opened our hearts to the impossible. It really was timeless. There will be no other of its kind!!!
Great comment Imaka! Most people don't understand how VERY important innocence actually is! Most people go around doing whatever the heckle they choose, and sadly, don't realize that their ~innocence~ and partly our own, is LOST, not to be regained! Which is why there have not been any movies made in more than 20 years, that are healthy, good reminders of love, REAL LOVE, not lust! Along with true love as prime importance, ~innocence~ is it's twin~!~
Yes it’s a story that talks about adultery and even inter-racial life. But this a real love story, these events happen every day to many people. We should not put our heads into the sand.
That scene where she drops the dish of red paint/ink and knows that something has happened to him. A feeling only between those really in love can have!
Thank you for this beautifully put together post! I saw this in 1955 when I was seven years old. I will see it again tonight on channel 9. So many years ago, indelible memories of the images in the film, and so many losses between then and now.
I live in China...have lived in Hong Kong, and Japan. Asia is a place where you meet circumstances, people, and find love in ways you can find nowhere else on earth. My love is a Chinese beauty that would be a 10+ in any city....and she's over 40!
Fab movie......Seen it a dozen times. The music score is exquisite........The FOUR ACES who sang the theme appeared at Al Harringtons bar in WAIKIKI in 1992.They were still great then......
Anche con quest' Arte Cinematografica si sa esprimere l' universale Amore che lega l' Umanita o due cuori, superndo le piu' inprevedibili difficili circostanze che si incontano nella vita. Un film that will be always a Classic.
I have been searching for nearly 50 years for the most incredible version of this song that I heard on an easy listening station, KFAC in Los Angeles. It's the 20th Century Fanfare Recording of the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra. That an a beautifully complex symphonic version of Heigh Ho (Snow White).
I saw this as a Child when it came out. My story has a happier ending. My Daughters are half Chinese and look as European, or more, as Jennifer Jones in the movie. Governor's Hill has a spiritual significance to me.
Although this happened a year or two before I was born...Yes, my parents favourte movie-love story at the time since they were in Hong Kong's family home before the refugee flooded in and were housed in the Chaple at the Chiristian Cemetery near the airport before all these low cost high rises building were built for the resettlement program for the refugee to try to settle in and some failed and turned into morden days opium if not other illegal acitivities "den" where the triads "flourished".....and cats catch mice kind of stories/history carry on forever.
I deliberately used Nancy Kwan's photos since she was so "irresistibly beautiful", full of "wits" (especially the picture where she was on Star Ferry) and looked oriental. Dr. Han Suyin should have an oriental look since she was Belgian-Chinese.
I think those are pictures of Nancy Kwan from the 1960 film The World of Suzie Wong which was filmed in Hong Kong and starred William Holden. Also, Nancy Kwan was Eurasian like Han Suyin.
Just watched the ending on TV...Wanted to find location of the tree but disappointed to find it was filmed in California! I am trying to find Han Suyin's thoughts on the film. Anyone know links, etc?
I AGREE THAT IT'S NOT OK, BUT THE MUSIC AND LYRICS HAVE INSUPERABLE MERIT, AS DOES A LOT OF THE SENSITIVITY AND ELOQUENCE OF THE ULTRA-ROMANTIC DIALOGUE. WE WERE PLACED IN AN IMPERFECT WORLD, AND MUST EMBRACE THE GOOD AND REJECT THE BAD LIFE. RESPECTFULLY

I share the same sentiments as you, Angelica.

Angelica Goldstein I know what good memories you must have too.

Please do tell, such beautiful song and set in my favorite Hong Kong...

My fathertookme to see this movie in 1955 in Denver. I have never forgotten the movie or the music. It brings back so many memories.

thank you for the info

The hill top scenes were filmed in Culver City , California near the studio. In the back round you can see dirt roads that were used to drive on.
Classic yet sad and tragic. Oh wonderful romance and what a haunting song over the years when i first heard as a schoolboy!
This movie was the ultimate of its time. It allowed all of us to FALL IN LOVE AGAIN, it gave us Hope, it opened our hearts to the impossible. It really was timeless. There will be no other of its kind!!!
Never get tired of watching this movie. Timeless.
Story of adultery is good only in books n movies but not in real life

Why do you include pictures of Nancy Kwan? She was not on this movie.
I deliberately used Nancy Kwan's photos since she was so "irresistibly beautiful", full of "wits" (especially the picture where she was on Star Ferry) and looked oriental. Dr. Han Suyin should have an oriental look since she was Belgian-Chinese.
+christopher wong Tks very much indeed for your kind answer. Happy New Year from Chile.

Ms. Jones gave an exceptional performance.
Ms. Kwan is lovely yet was too young for the part at the time.
It's mixed up with pictures from the movie "the world of suzie wong "
Is the alltimes best movie song
Just watched the ending on TV...Wanted to find location of the tree but disappointed to find it was filmed in California!

La canción más hermosa...
Sure ... married man cheatson wife with beautiful scenery and music, it's all ok
