  • We've been married for five years and now have a second child, but there are still some "culture differences." I thought we'd gotten over it, but it's hard to calm her down when she's a little depressed after giving birth.

I do not understand how she views her husband as a 3rd child? He's such an amazing man, husband, and father. My husband and I have 4 children. In America, the mothers stay in hospital 2 days and then sent home after having their baby, unless more care is needed for the mother or baby. But after each of my children, I still had to come home and do everything. My husband did not even do a fraction of what her husband does for her to make sure she can rest. I had to come home to clean, cook, care for my other children, and still necessary run errands. No rest. This was so hard and resulted in many quite moments of me breaking down crying from the mental and physical exhaustion. If I had him as a husband and close family to help care for me and my children, any tears shed would be tears of joy. I had no one to help me, no one to happily welcome me home, no family or friends, and got help from my husband when his work schedule would allow. She does not know how blessed she really is. Or at least I hope she realizes eventually.

We actually don’t know much of that side of Gareth, maybe this video doesn’t show everything. Mi Kyung knew her husband best since they married until today. Plus they have cultural differences, so it will be harder to tackle. In this video she’s having a second child and has a mild depression, so her thinking can be deeper and become more emotional and sensitive. Probably something happened when they were coming home with the baby, Gareth think it’s not a big deal and she got upset. This thing can happen. I think after the end of the post-mortem, she would be healthy again, both physically and mentally. Gareth will also try to be considerate. If today they are still together, that probably from their own forgiveness, love and compassion towards each other. This show shows their personal life and they know it.

Mi-Kyung is correct, Gareth is a child. He is so immature and insensitive. He did not use his body to create a life and then suffered childbirth to bring it into this world. He not only doesn't tend to her needs but ridicules her for it. He thinks women being neglected after delivery is fine. Asian culture understands the body is depleted from making a new life. It needs to be rebuilt. 30 days confinement is normal for Asian mothers. The West knows nothing of this important process. Just because another woman has a horrible husband does not mean Mi-Kyung should accept inferior treatment as good treatment.

Your sad sorry husband is not the bar by which everyone else needs to make comparisons. Are you competing with her for sympathy? It’s a shame in the US that there is no post partum or parental leave protections, and you suffered, and yet you still had it better than the women abandoned completely by the father.
We’re US, my husband stepped up doing the domestics, grocery shopping and cooking for 6 weeks post partum, with me helping as I healed, and by the end of post partum I was able to take over. I’m week 9 now, and doing PT to address mobility problems. This wasn’t “amazing”, cooking, cleaning, and shopping was something he did when he was unmarried. Most of us work and run our homes. It’s sad that you have such a low estimation of what men are capable of handling. (Let alone for a brief time period!)

Not having to cook or clean, access to lactation consultants, easy midwife follow ups etc. all sounds great. I would have definitely used that for my first born.

Perhaps she is experiencing some postpartum depression 🫥. Why would she say she feels like she has three kids, I watched the other 3 videos on this family, and her husband Gareth was always helping with the cooking and housework.

It’s called postpartum swelling. It’s pretty common… childbirth is pretty taxing on the body, and then there is the lack of sleep that comes after.
