- In 1980, a South Korean dictator ordered the massacre of hundreds of people in Gwangju where people protested for democracy. One day in 2023, his grandson decided to expose the corruption in his family.

His choice was doing the right thing vs supporting his family. He chose the former. This was so courageous of him to do so. Not many can do what he did. His family basically exiled him from them for exposing the dirt. His consciousness took the right course.
Do you honestly believe out of nowhere, for no reason, he just exposed them, even though they were treating him so well? that's so naive. What's realistic is they had a disagreement and he retaliated by exposing them, he's not the saint you think he is.

I'm Polish and I started my adventure with Korea with movies, and then I started delving into more serious topics. There was such a dark incident in your history. One of your leaders announced during dinner that he would kill all the protesters. When the security guard heard these words, he pulled out his gun and, as an act of protest, tried to kill the participants of the feast who were planning a crime against their own people. Unfortunately, his action was not entirely successful and he was executed. Whether this story is about this president, I'm not sure. I focused on the dramaturgy of events.

Amazing documentary that should be a movie. This guy is amazing and the courage and guts to do what his “family” is too cowardly to do. May God protect this man, his legacy of being the opposition to his family’s corruption and horrendous actions is just the beginning. Well done.

Chun WooWon has turned himself into a folk hero for the Korean people. It's a bold move to have taken. The deep corruption and stolen money is clearly unaccounted for to this day and justice hasn't been served. How wild is it that money and power > family? Chun WooWon has experienced something very few can empathize with. I spent a long time living in Korea and was aware of Chun DooHwan. This was a great story that helped me understand more.
How does it make him a hero? All he's doing is talking about the past. It doesn't change the world does it?
@@Ahbab91 He's doing more than talking about the past. He's putting pressure on the people who stole a lot of money from everyday Koreans during that era. The ones who stole millions and millions of dollars in the 80s and 90s are still living lavishly to this day. Chun WooWon could've lived a quiet life doing the same. He didn't. He chose to speak up. In my opinion, that constitutes a hero.
@@Alex_Unorthodox He became a 27 year old, got educated, got a job in the US, all with the support of his family - the same people who supposedly stole millions of dollars. This is no different from the politicians who speak a lot about corruption, inequality, inflation and what not - but after coming to power the politicians change in a heartbeat. If all it takes to become a hero is simply speak about injustice, we can all become heroes regardless of our impact on the world.

After watching this i am reminded of the drama youth of may, which covers this gwanju uprising case.
That drama is really something else.
And, lee do hyun's and go minsi's acting is something else.
The drama dwelves on politics, and a seed of romance Budding through those sufferings, the people's unity, the sacrifices, the officials cruelty.

In my 20's , the 1980's I remember the protests against the government. It made news in Australia. I remember the police and how brutal their actions were. K-Doc, what a great piece of journalism. Chun Woo-won is brave to confront the bad deeds of his family. He is giving very valuable information

How can the Korean government turn a blind eye to all the corruption in this family? Why did he grandson have to be the one to stand up for what is right. His grandfather is a thief and murderer. The whole family needs to be locked up because apologizes and fines don't undo the wrongs committed by this family.
Indeed, Chun Doo-hwan (dictator) was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 for his coup, anti-democratic actions and corruption.
But he was pardoned in 1998 when his political nemesis, Kim Dae Joong, became president.
Because his period was one of Korea's highest growth periods at that time, it was ironic, but he had a lot of support. At that time, Korea's liberal party had to pledge his release in the name of 'political harmony'.
It doesnt matter what country you go to in the world. If you are in the top 1% of the rich, money talks over ethics unfortunately..
Because korea itself is a corrupt country . Take the recent drug allegations to gdragon , they are only to hide stock price manipulation by the wife of the president . You don't hear that anywhere why?

I admire south korea's country development and frequently compare it with my own country which its independence day only days away from each other. How sk developed its infrastructures gracefully compare to my country. How sk keep in mind the development though leaders were changing periodically. While in my country, every new period, the long development plan, would be shorten or even cancel. I thought naively it's due to personal advantageous, how when someone in power would rather empower themselves more because their less nationalism/patriotism aspects. It turns out it's the same. Though at least sk infrastructures's plan are still developing while ours still flip-flopping periodically. I just hope someone with heart not just smart, have nationalistic & patriotic characters will win the next election. And just please stop being greedy & keep my country being respectable in the eye of the world. Amen

Is Chun Woo-Won in Seoul now? I’m in Seoul now and would like to exchange a few words with him as a fellow Manhattan/NYC dweller.
The use of “His Excellency” creeped me out because it’s not any different from the “Supreme Leader” in the 🇰🇵 DPRK. How was former President Chun any different than the Kim regime (hoarding wealth)? It’s all moved around as slush funds or invested in art/real estate.
These dictators still have one ideology: Power - The only difference I can attest to is that the South 🇰🇷 vs the North 🇰🇵… The local citizen options for mobility/voice freedom of speech... Obviously cannot do this in the DPRK. (I’m hoping for the demise of the Kim regime in my lifetime so the peninsula can thrive as a collective.)
I just don’t see how either of these families were chosen to be great or better than others. Who even allowed this from the get go? They all suck. Anyone could have revolted in the beginning. (Kim Il-sung was appointed by the Soviets. 🙄 Again, who allowed a Soviet to dictate this? It could have been abolished ages ago with that suggestion.) Here we are 70 years later with this nonsense.
They’ve (Kim and Chun families) made zero contributions to either of their societies aside from trying to isolate themselves from the law or global sanctions.
I’m ranting because too many unnecessary lives were forsaken at their helm.

Yes and no. Chun Doo Hwan is one of the big reasons why Korea is now a well-known country. He helped Korea grow in many different ways. At the same time, he did a lot of bad things.

What lame grandson lol. Imagine your own grandchild snitches on you like this then wonders why nobody likes him anymore. He's looking to start a career in politics and paint himself as a "good person" by severing ties with his "horrible" grandpa that gave him a life of luxury. It's all just for show lol.
not sure if you understand the gravity of his grandfather's crime he committed against individuals and to the country. there is nothing wrong with calling out what is right or wrong. in regards to ulterior motive, who knows but regardless, i support his courage to come out and say it. honestly, i don;t know if anyone cares about grandson making such statements this late in time. i would think perhaps coming from Chun Doo Hwan's children would have more gravitas.
I understand the gravity. I was born in dictatorship. Him calling out his grandfather is not wrong just morally disappointing because he is his grandson and he benefited from all of it. And yes the children of Chun Do Hwan coming forward would mean more but they are too old, and I don't think they even see it as wrong, or see the point in doing it now because they are almost at the end of their lives as well. Time forgives no one.
