Ten years ago I had a Lumia 920. Such a cool device with probably the most inovative and user friendly mobile OS back then. Such a shame what Microsoft did with Windows Phone.
It's more like what Google did to it. Google simply refused to port their apps to Windows Phone. So we had no TH-cam, no Maps, no Google Search, Drive, Docs, etc, etc, etc. If they had supported Microsoft the same way they support Apple, Windows Phone could've really gone in a totally different direction.
well you must been living under a rock ? most Chinese flagship from vivo oppo xiaomi are all pack with these circular module camera in the back and theyre engineered by famous camera brand too, dont act like you cant get one.
I was so drawn to Windows Phone after watching reviews of this phone that I took the plunge with a Lumia 720. It's a shame to see such a unique platform fade away.
I had this phone back in the day and i'm still missing it somehow. The camera was the first in a smartphone that felt to me like a fully-fledged replacement for a compact camera that you always have with you. I know that Windows phone was a pain in the ass in many areas because there was little app support, but it felt so smooth and futuristic compared to other devices back then. It probably also hurt less not being able to use many apps back then because I wasn't so addicted and had such a tiktok brain. Totally enjoy your videos lately, keep it up!
the camera was slow because they used the Snapdragon Soc's ISP instead of using a dedicated ISP like thay had for the 808 Pureview. I tried to get the 1020 and looked for one in my state for a whole and founf one and ended up getting the 1520.
Windows Phones not only lead in software, but also hardware. You can tell by how adamant and consistent google's efforts where to stop it from succeeding and breaking their monopoly.
Microsoft was kinda ahead on windows phone but Nokia was the company that was ahead in hardware! For n8, n9 and all the nokia lumia phones . Peak modern design.
Stop lying to yourself. The software was so crap no one wanted one. Those horrible looking ugly tiles with that horrible navigation is a masterclass in how to not design any UI for user consumption. That is also the reason why it died (because both developers and users didn't want it). And just like Windows (which is now becoming crap in both performance and UI) this doesn't seem like a one-off thing by micro$hit.
I can see you gradually making your own brand will all these videos you posted, it makes a lot of sense to revisit the old legendary phones considering how scared companies nowadays to innovate
"Scared" - you mean, complacent in having found the cheapest format - to squeeze the most amount of money from people. They're all complicit in it too. Look up how much it takes to make an apple phone, there's part by part (yes, part by part) breakdowns of these phones. Some extremely detailed that add up even with the costs of factory setups from industry insiders and anonymous employees. They cost almost nothing when accounting for scale. Yet... you have to pay $$$$ for it... for some reason. It's akin to the clothes washing machine industry. In the 90's when the peak was reached, a washing machine was made from metal, metal, concrete and more metal, with barely any plastic. Nowadays, the tub is plastic, the drum is plastic (with a thin veneer of stainless on top), the motor mounts are plastic, the gas shocks have been replaced by plastic supports that hold cheap springs inside, sometimes nested one in another to add up, and the shells are so thin, they use plastic spacers to support them from the inside, so that when you move the thing initially or touch it in the show room, you don't get the impression you're touching metal so thin, you could literally poke it with a pear knife. Oh and even more concrete. Like i have an 03 machine that i've kept running through maintenance and aggravation at cheap modern trash. There's only 3 kilos worth of concrete inside, that act out as balance for the main stainless steel drum and tub. By comparison, the modern machine my parents have (a 22 model) has about 14 kilos of concrete. On plastic. Adjusted for price, the new machine is much more expensive than my old robust machine, where all i have to do is occasionally change the bearings, put new brushes in the motor every three or four years and only because i want to. I could leave them be to last even more. When i'll throw my parent's machine in the trash in a couple of years, and help them install a new one, mine will still work. And probably (by that time), i will upgrade it with a pi computer for special washing programs that the old mechanical clock driven "computer" brain didn't have, just because i can, and have something to build on. There's nothing "scared" in the process. It's on purpose. They took Bernard London's "planned obsolescence" the a new peak.
WOW!!! I actually still have my old one in the middle console pocket of my car. Needed a new battery. I actually forgot about this one. Awesome Ryan!!! 👊🏽💯👏🏽
a big reason why this phone failed was because reviewers would pan these things for the apparent "app gap" like youtube, which was of course blocked by google at that time.

I am glad that you mentioned Nokia 808 Pureview as the first 41mp sensor Nokia phone, many of them had forgotten this device even exist, I currently own one (white color) and its daylight image is still something to marvel at.
Still have a Lumia 950 XL sitting in a drawer. I was the weird guy who used Windows Phone in college and loved it, mostly. The camera was the best I used on a phone until like the Galaxy S20. In retrospect, it was foolish to expect Microsoft to compete seriously in the mobile space.
You've been dropping lots of content lately and all of them are so good. I love throwback to old phones and devices. Keep it up you'll reach your targeted subscribers in no time.
This is my dream phone in childhood 😢 Still feeling nostalgic seeing this & I think the video quality is amazing considering it's a 11 yr old device...
The Lumia 930 was insane too - the camera was "only" 20 MP, which was still absolutely insane for the time, and the screen was genuinely good by even modern standards. Absolutely gorgeous, with very thin bezels for the time.
The Lumia 1020 was ahead of its time and demolished its competitors in image quality, it’s just a shame that Microsoft screwed Nokia over and that it was running Windows Phone.
I had a Lumia back in the day and I freaking loved the Windows OS. The vibe, the text, the overall look and feel was and still is incredible ! I wish there was someway to daily one these days
The performance was so much better than android of the time. My Lumia 620 was butter smooth with 512kb memory. I stuck with it until the very end Windows mobile 10. 😢
The Nokia 1020 waa the right product at the wrong time. I love mine (bought secondhand) but it requires a bit of dedication to get output out of. Hunting for an 808 or a 9. The 9 looks awesome, and I'm digging the dual monos on the back used for sharpening output.
I never sold my Lumia 1020 and still have it! One of my favorite phones ever. I live in the USA, but used it as my sole camera when visiting Europe for school and didn't regret it back in 2014.
This channel is a hidden gem. It resonates with me especially with how I feel about the current smartphone market. Consistently dropping high quality uploads about the bygone era of great smartphones. Something like Xperia 1 mark 3, Mi 11 ultra, P30 pro, Mate 30 pro and more. All of which were unique in some way and stood the test of time, not something monotonous like the current market. Subscribed!!
a person i know worked at nokia service centre, he stated after lumia there were very less issues with phones and he may lose his job, he actually did lose his job after some days, indeed they were solidly built
I had a Nokia Lumia Icon and to this day it is the best smartphone camera I have ever owned. It was so much more feature robust than anything my Pixel 8 can do.
that noise is the camera module hardware starting up, due to the complex lens structure inside. My Xperia 5 Mark 3 also do this noise because of the OIS and the lenses
Still have one. And if, at minimum, there's be a working browser for it, I'd use it as my main device. The size; the way it feels in your hand; the gorgeous display, and even the sound.... And it's almost indistructible. After ten+ years with some heavy use for three of those and no case, this phone looks almost like new.
As a kid, It was my dream to own one. But by the time i bought my first phone, Lumia was history. I still remember the iconic ad on TV "more than your eye can see" regarding it's (i think Lumia 920/925) camera.
That comment about Huawei is so real! I remember that they were mostly the reason for the advancement of cameras in smartphones! We really need competition for our products to continually improve!
I specifically remember this phone having a ton of hype among photographers…. But when real world reviews came out, this was terribly reviewed by actual photographers. From what I remember, the ads were all focused on the Megapixel count, but so much more matters then just the size of the file.
Idk why but I've been watching this guy's videos for about a year now and i really loved the reviews, especially older flagships and felt like I've been missing these kinda reviews. I thought i already subscribed to his channel, but i did today. Thanks for the content. 💝Much love brother.
Have a lumia 1020. The phone camera was way ahead of its time. The windows OS and the software sucked big time. It did not have its own TH-cam app. Could not do many things which I could do with a basic Android phone.
The nokia 808 not only did have swappable batteries, it had a wrist strap and was insanely durable. It can hardly be called usable nowadays though. If you would be looking for one for review only, I could lend you mine, accessories and all, just so that people could experience the absolute beas of a phone it was :)
A note about the binning part. 1020 (&808PV) use actual binning, relative to what we get these days. What we have these days are multi-bayer sensors (most commonly quad bayer), whose "binned res" is actually the native res. 48/50/108/200MP sensors, are all 12-12.5MP* in reality. This is obvious whenever you use "high res" mode and there's barely any more detail. Of course, in more extreme cases and with very efficient remosaic algorithms, it can net more detail than the native resolution, but it's still a far cry from the touted number. It's worth mentioning that, even the 200MP sensor(s), that are 16-bayer sensors, still use a single ADC behind all that "pixel cluster". Multi-bayer sensors were created for HDR & improved noise performance, not resolution. If you're ever bored, I'd give the xiaomi mi note 10 a try (or Mi 10/Pro/11) as it uses the first-gen "108MP" sensor, S5KHMX. It's natively 27MP, and trust me, when you look at sample images, you can tell. Also still to this date, imo, one of the best .RAW outputs out of any phone. (btw, the Nokia 9 strength was the RAW files, hence multiple same sensors)
I own one of these phones. The only real issue I had was the 720p resolution. So hard to see the quality of the image on that terrible screen. I did and do love it and will never get rid of it.
The first smartphone that I bought was the Lumia 520 which served me very well till I got the Lumia 830 which I still miss quite a bit, the camera was so nice and to this day it's one of my favorite designs on a phone. Windows phone still has my best keyboard experience and idk why but there was something that just worked for me with the keyboard and it's seamless swype typing.
From 68.1k while making this video to 79.3k after 2 weeks, this video surely helped your channel grow. Nice content. 👏🏼 Really capable camera-phone of its time. But, since then, it seems like Nokia has lost their way. Though it would be great if you really decide to make a video on Nokia 9 pureview.
The Nokia Lumia was an incredible range of phones, the only reason I never bought one myself was because they were a windows phone, and absolutely no app that I wanted to use was available on Windows.. no app that anyone wanted to use was available on Windows Phones.
The long time it take to process your picture is probably the fact that it took real 41mp images. It will create huge buffer in memory to read and transfer all of those data. And especially if you take RAW DNG, it will need a lot of time to clear the buffer. DNG files require huge memory buffer and takes a lot of time to clear the buffer. A proper camera still need to do this but obviously they can do it at mch faster speed. The reason why most smartphone today don't have this buffer is simple - they don't take the same amount of megapixel they were advertised as and they don't take DNG files.
The impermanence of phones make even the best devices fleeting enjoyment. I didn't want to stop using my BlackBerry Passport (EOL 2019). And no I do not want to stop using my Surface Duo (EOL 2023). I bridged the gap between the Passport and the Duo, with a 180€ motorola, because I don't care for specs. If I have to use a slap, I have no reason, not to get the cheapest phone that gets updates.
I had two for some years between 2014-2017. Fantastic memories saved 😊 Mention: the sensor was from Toshiba and after they sold the sensor factory to ... Sony. Another fact is that the software was made from the genius Juha Alaharku (the one that is behind Axon bodycam software) that mastered the idea at the table with Damian Dinning and Eero Salminen. Nice stories about 808 also, the real King of smartphone photography 🎉
Man wished we'd have this tech today. Nokia shot itself in the foot when they chose Windows but also never went back to Android instead of having a hiatus for like years. Still they have the best design that matches Windows Mobile admirably. Shamed their names are nothing more than just Telecom. And HMD seems to not care about them after all
I wish they republished these iconic lumias with win11+ android app support while being true to the original design+size. Even if it's a limited release.
I still have mine lying around in a box somewhere, I was a fan of the Windows phone system and the Lumia range. There's anoter two Lumia 950's and a Nokia 8 Sirocco in the same box :) as my little museum of cellphones. The 1020 was such a great phone, hope HMD comes back with something similar!
Mind you, when it was popular, it was actually looked down on by the 808 users as a downgrade to it. 808 was an absolute menace, my friend still uses one as a daily driver and I had one back in the day for some time, its a wonderful camera,
Kept my 808 in my pocket as an second phone for quite a while. Most of my best shots are with that phone. They actually look like they are taken with a camera.

Everyone is focusing on more antutu score instead of good camera specs. They need to understand not everyone plays games
i still have this phone and it is still part of my top 5 *essential* smartphones as i consider both novelty and usability...
The design was so innovative. Now every phone looks the same.
Kindly advice to buy new mobile or go after a old branded mobie
Is it possible to completely change the windows os with closest android os? I mean it uses snapdragon processor
Go ahead Ryan, let's see your review of the Nokia 9 Preview.
Had the same color 1020 with camera kit. The Toshiba one inch sensor was insane and can hold its own against the best today. Pity Microsoft killed it.
My wife had one when we first met; It was a real jewel!
I had lumia 730 and oh god, what a phone it was! I use S24 Ultra now, its great but I wish Lumia series continued.
Camera is so good but the problem.are the upd8 of application so big 1 gb per application
I still have this phone. Sadly the camera doesn’t turn on anymore. It’s a widespread issue.
Bro i only have 600 which used phone should I get for camera or buy a used camera and which one
Man wished we'd have this tech today. Nokia shot itself in the foot when they chose Windows but also never went back to Android instead of having a hiatus for like years. Still they have the best design that matches Windows Mobile admirably. Shamed their names are nothing more than just Telecom. And HMD seems to not care about them after all
Missing my Nokia Lumia 820. Windows Phone had a ton of potential that wasted because of bad choices.
I still have and use my 1020 and 950.
Really loved windows...
Thinking to get my hands on Nokia 9, so yes, if you have chance make a video about it.
I wish they republished these iconic lumias with win11+ android app support while being true to the original design+size.
Even if it's a limited release.
I almost got this one as my first phone. I really wish they did not give up!
I used one of those for 3 years. I dont remember photos taking this long to process. 🤔
6:14 Well, the browser is not optimized for web apps of course. It was fast and smooth just 5/6 years ago to browse the web.
11 years ago, I bought Samsung galaxy note 3 N9005. It had 4k 30fps recording
Thoughts of this vs the Nokia 808 Pureview?
My brother had the windows phone back in when gta 5 launched was a weird time
After watching Huawei p30 pro and lumia 1020 videos finally I subscribed to your channel ... Both devices are my dream smart phones in old days 😢.
Please do make a video on 9 pureview i love that camera
Steve Litchfield from the UK knows one or two things about the Lumia 1020 and 808. You should have contacted him for this video.
