    Your videos have been such a help to me. I am just starting to repair watches and it is sometimes nice to see that I am not the only one who says "crap!"

    Great videos! I've learned a lot from them! I find it's a lot easier to reassemble full plate watches upside down. That is, put the gear train and lever into the top plate, place the pillar plate on top, then flip the whole thing and coax the pivots into place.
    If the lever insists on falling over, a little ball of rodico or blue-tac against the tail will hold it in place until the plates are together.

    The asides ('Crap!' 'Pain in the ass,' etc) are hilarious.
    Thanks for this entertaining and instructive video.

    I have a Waltham 1883 model I bought at garage sale, I paid $10.00 for it. It appears all gummed up. I watched your 2 Waltham disassembly videos and this one. Great videos, I feel a little more confident now taking it apart. All The hands are missing, broke off but dial is excellent and 14K case. Thanks for the videos they helped a lot. I think I will take photos as I disassemble to help remember how things go back

      You paid $10 for a 14K case! I want to go to that garage sale. Yes take photos or make a video. I used to put them back together as soon as I could after taking them apart before I could forget.

    Great video, and your little exclamations just make it more entertaining. If I'm watching a long video and need to do something else, I just remember where I left off and come back to it.

    You made a wonderful instructional video on this vintage Waltham Watch Co. key wound movement. Your shim was a very good idea. The only thing that comes to my mind is possibly the balance staff pivot could be slightly off true center which when your provided manufacturing your shim, this allowance of .001" shim provided the clearance for this possible issue on the balance staff. Excellent job! Great Video!

    Great video. Don't break it up, it helps to watch the entire video just as you made it. Even when you forgot to oil something, I'm glad you didn't leave this out - I am thinking about tackling a pocket watch that stopped running and this video gives me confidence that I can do it. The only thing I would suggest is show how you store the screws/parts so that you know what goes where on reassembly.

    I enjoyed your video, I have the same type of pocket watch, swiss movement. I have been considering stripping and cleaning it my self, so found your instructions most useful. My watch occasionally seems to have the balance wheel slip out of the fork, it is an interesting exercise getting it back in.

    I am not a watchmaker. I say so in the descriptiion. I have a video that is 2 hours long of me putting together a wrist watch. The reason it is two hours long is because I forgot how the watch went back together. Should I upload it or edit it down to one hour?

    I don't know. The watch was running without a shim before I took it apart to clean it so it should run that way. Maybe something had to settle? The only thing I did that would affect the balance was that I pushed out the balance jewels to clean them. I do know that something is warped on the balance cock because if I loosen the screw that holds the balance cock the balance will stop cold. Usually the watch would keep on running. You never know what has been done to these old watches!

    If you ever lose the dial pins try straightening staples then cut them into new pins.

    The material I used for the shim is copper that is around .0025 inch thick. I also use mylar and other plastics. I don't like to use steel because it might rust. I have even used aluminum foil but that is a pain to work with because it is thin, .0007 inch thick, and very soft. When a watch comes out of the factory no shims are needed. If you need a shim then that means some one repaired the watch.

  • @bunnspecial

    Thanks for the comment. Did you watch the whole video in one viewing? I am wondering if I should break these up into smaller parts or leave them be because I have more this long and longer.

    I always want to learn the correct way to do this but are you sure that I am not supposed to oil the pivots for the pallet lever? I looked at the Chicago watchmakers book and they say to oil the pivots. Could you tell me the source where you are getting this from.

    Just the bits where things go wrong and you swear at the watch.
    Yeah ok so basically upload the whole 2 hours.

    Hey Bunnspecial, what do you mean you found out later you didn't need shim? I just bought one of these watches and I really like it.

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I first looked at this watch I noticed that the balance didn't move that freely and put a shim under the balance cock to give the balance staff some clearance. After I cleaned it and put it together I didn't need the shim. I guess the screw for the balance cock was not tight or something was not sitting correctly. With these old watches you don't know what they did to them to keep it running. Not every watchmaker would use genuine parts for repair. That is what I figured had happened.

    In my humble opinion, and having worked on a number of '57 watches, you might be best served by laying the gear train out on the back plate first, then placing the front plate on on top. This method eliminates issues with damaging the pallet fork.
    No offense, just helping out with another craftsman. www.lastwindup.com

    • @bunnspecial
      @bunnspecial  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      No offense taken. You are not the first to suggest that method and will not be the last. I did try it that way once but found it difficult since I am comfortable doing it the other way but pratice makes perfect.
