    Funny footnote - Randy Johnson struck out 19 in this game, one short of the record, but also gave up 3 home runs including this one and lost. Leave it to Randy in his prime to have a lousy outing and still strike out 19 batters.

    • @kevincalderhead1821

      I think you mean leave it to the Mariners to lose a game where their starter punches out 19

      When is striking out 19 in a game a lousy outing? Sure he gave up three homers but to strike out 19 batters is not lousy

    • @Tigerpuffer
      @Tigerpuffer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Because it's a loss :p might be a nice line, but doesn't help the team. It's like losing a no-hitter.

    • @88CDawg
      @88CDawg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      That's on the rest of the team though. If a pitcher lost a no hitter, it's not a lousy outing because he had a no hitter going. His hitters just let him down. That is in no way a lousy outing even if he lost, he can't control what his offense does.

      i love watching randy's reaction... when a pticher gives up a homerun, they dont even have to look, they just know. I'd like to imagine Randy instinctively looked because the sound off the bat was so different or something.

    Dave Niehaus was just the best. Way too many announcers just come off as obnoxious homers. Niehuas was clearly the home team's guy, but clips like this show that he would always dial it up in big moments no matter who it was.

    The late great Hall of Fame Brodcaster Dave Niehaus calling the "unbelievable shot" by McGwire .
    If someone didn't know any better you would think he was the Oakland A's play by play announcer however he is our beloved Seattle Mariners play by play announcer. As a young whipper snapper back in the late 70s early 80s I would listen to Dave call the games on my transistor am FM radio out in my backyard of my home, with a stick hitting rocks, imagining that I was a baseball star. Dave had that cl
    Keen and professional ability to make it seem as if the Mariners were the greatest team on Earth but in essence we were always bringing up the rear with one of the worst records in baseball. You wouldn't know it by the way Dave called the game for the home team. I'm proud to say that I developed a lot of my even keel Fair personality from listening to Dave broadcast Seattle Mariners baseball games.
    After Dave passed in 2010 a local radio station here in Seattle interviewed the great baseball announcer John Miller, this is what John Miller had to say about Dave niehaus broadcasting Style. Miller said the first time his wife came to Seattle with him for his broadcast of the game they turned on the radio and heard one of Daves famous calls, his wife turned to him and said it sounds like that announcer is having a good time old relegion Revival, LOL true story.
    My oh my, I sure do miss Mr. Niehaus. Rest in peace Dave!

  • @Tigerpuffer
    @Tigerpuffer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    Ha, I love that old Mariners announcer. Impartial. Doesn't care that it was hit against the team he loves... it was a towering, majestic home run - albeit an artificial one - and he got excited for it and admired it just as he would have if The Kid or A-Rod hit it for Seattle.

      Dave was partial, but it was subtle. Not like a lot of these guys with depressed nothing calls of big moments in games that go against their team. Homer announcers are the worst.

    • @PotSmokeGuy
      @PotSmokeGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Artificial? If all it took was muscles to be a good hitter every baseball player would look like Mr. Universe. McGwire was a good hitter...look at that swing, it's beautiful. Dude was a huge rookie and got bigger. Anyone in their 20's lifting weights all the time is going to get big, don't chalk everything up to steroids.

    • @PotSmokeGuy
      @PotSmokeGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Jonathan McCully His power didn't only come from steroids though...that's just not accurate. Steroids are mostly about recuperation time. McGwire hit 49 homers as a rookie. The guy was a phenom his whole career.
      He was one of the most powerful hitters of all time. Taking steroids doesn't make you a great hitter.

    • @PotSmokeGuy
      @PotSmokeGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn't born after 1990, but steroids weren't illegal in baseball until 1991, so...
      Pitchers were on steroids too.
      McGwire has admitted to taking them. As a fan, I don't care. Just like players all through the 60's and 70's (even 80's) were on speed, I don't care. (Daryl Strawberry has said taking speed made the baseball look as big as a basketball to him).
      As I said, having big muscles doesn't
      mean you can hit a baseball.

      McGwire Was Also Johnson's Strikeout Victim As Well Before He Hit This Homer

  • @centralpete6044
    @centralpete6044 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I watched Nick Castellanos crank a homerun off a 100 mph fastball last night when the Phillies clinched the NLDS over the Braves. I immediately thought of this McGwire crank off of a Randy Johnson fastball. Johnson was the premier power pitcher of his era and McGwire was the premier power hitter at that time. Immovable object meets irresistible force kind of clash. The homerun was more than just the result of the at bat, it meant something historically. The call by Niehaus was cherry on the top, recognizing the historical nature of the clash of titans and the 538 foot result. There have been homeruns with more playoff and pennant race significance but from this Twins fans perspectives, this one resonates as one of the best homerun + calls in baseball history.

    @DozaSlayer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Damn, he got all of that ball. Even though he used steroids, people don't seem to understand that they don't help with hand-eye coordination, they only help with muscle building and healing. After the strike, baseball was going down the road of the USFL, so sure, he may have had forearms the size of a Thanksgiving turkey, but those helped regain the popularity of the sport. And though he's been vilified, he was a good enough player with or without steroids that he's a hitting coach. (Though, yes, he probably had connections and didn't land that job solely off of merit)

    • @Schwedeballz
      @Schwedeballz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DozaSlayer increases bat speed which gives you more time to square up on a ball. If steroids didn't help with hitting guys wouldn't have been doing it. There's a reason you haven't seen many 50 home runs seasons since they've been cracking down on the roids. Players get older their bat speed slows down and they can't catch up to certain pitches anymore. If they didn't need steroids, then why take them?

    • @DozaSlayer
      @DozaSlayer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no use in increased bat speed if you don't have the hand-eye coordination to make a swing in time. It really doesn't help all that much. Just because a team hits a lot of homeruns doesn't mean they're going to be a good team.

      @rickn4171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      DozaSlayer You've clearly never played baseball. At the major league level they ALL have good hand eye coordination. Having insane batspeed to the point where it's basically like swinging a wiffle ball bat give you more time to read a pitch instead of having to guess.
