Years ago I fled a bad situation, I drove 2000 miles in a triumph spitfire which had no tax, MOT, [roof!] or insurance to get away... I played Solid Air all the way, "Over The Hill" and it got me home. We all go through stuff, so did he, but if you think you've left a bigger epitaph forgive me Luvaduk, but I doubt it... RIP to one of the greatest singer-songwriters who influenced a generation. RIP John xxxx
I often spent the hours of regrets and indecisiveness driving. In the early hours, sometimes in welcomed rain battering the windshield and making my poor choices even more cinematic and pointless. John was always singing relevant to my imposition or relief or unbounded joy. Was at two performances, Southport 1994? And Liverpool Irish Centre just before it shut. The only magic that is real is that which lives in the heart and memories of those whom love, are loved and will always be loved.
Attention dimwits. EVERYTHING about this is excellent. The fiddles are excellent. The bouzouki is excellent. The percussion is paricularly good. DT embodies excellence as does JM. So, for the avoidance of doubt, EVERYTHING about this particular rendition is excellent. Here's to JM, wha's like him? Gae few. And they're a' deid.
I just stumbled across this.......always thought that John Martyn was absolute genius and this different, exquisite arrangement just confirms this to me once again. Thank you!
What a fabulous string arrangement - celtic feel at times, blending with 'nervy', 'brooding' jazz...classic Martyn. Thanks for the music, John. Thanks for the vid mnemonyx.
I saw these two c.74 at some theatre in London, fantastic gig, durinng which some wag shouted " hey Danny ! tell your guitarist to play ****** " I can't remember the song requested but it got a big laugh, don't think John was too amused. An alcoholic hard man, but GREAT inspirational guitar player.
John Martyn always strived to update rearrange his music as he felt that nothing was perfect and that music should evolve. He also thought that people would get bored if he just regurgitated the same old version out. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Somtimes it was just down to the fact that people were either used to or loved the original versions. Either way, he was a genius and like a lot of people will miss him and the songs he was yet to write. RIP, you glorious fool.
Legend! Thanks to youtube I get to watch these kind of classical performances! I'm 23 and seen John in Newcastle/Gateshead last year, although in A wheel chair and a bit past it, he played the guatiar better than anyone i've ever seen and could still nock out a good tune!
His early material (london conversation/bless the weather/storm bringer) in the 60s/70s was exceptionally good, soulful folk music. Amazing lyrics, minimal production and some great live perfomance came from that 10 year period. Unfortunately in the late 70s martyn divorced his wife beverly kutler and he hit self destruct, became an alcoholic, lost his leg in a car crash and made some TERRIBLE records, remastering a lot of his best work. He never really recovered unfortunately, tragic story
And I don't want to know about evil Only want to know about love I don't want to know about evil Only want to know about love. Sometimes it gets so hard to listen Hard for me to use my eyes And all around the cold is glistening Making sure it keeps me down to size. And I don't want to know about evil Only want to know about love I don't want to know one thing about evil Only want to know about love. I'm waiting for the planes to tumble Waiting for the towns to fall I'm waiting for the cities to crumble Waiting till I see you crawl. Yes it's getting hard to listen Hard for us to use our eyes Cause all around that gold is glistening Making sure it keeps us hypnotized. And I don't want to know about evil I only want to know about love I don't want to know about evil Only want to know about love. I don't want to know anything about evil Only want to know about love I don't want to know about evil Only want to know about love.
It's Donal Lunny on bouzouki, which I assume is close enough. Full musician credits for every TS item I've posted are in the video descriptions. That inconspicuous "more" link is starting to irk (no slight intended, except toward YooToob)
Appreciate the proper diacritics for Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh - blurb updated. I'd be willing to change the description of that goblet drum from a general "percussion" to something more authentic like تنبک or دربكة , but I definitely won't be changing it to "bongos". Thanks for taking the time to comment.
The only artist I can compare this powerful soul to is Richie Havens. Both sang, wrote and played from their soul. I’m so sorry I encountered John’s music so late in my own life. What a treasure he is even now for us. 💕🎶

Absolutely agree Russ. The re-recorded stuff sounds too cluttered and busy and has lost the soul that was there in the original work. I think he only lost one leg though, and it was due to health problems (such as alcohol abuse) rather than an accident but I could be wrong. >:0)
nice strings , i`ve heard, seen, drank & smoked with john once or twice and thought its a shame hes not so cheerful these days....the voice is superb tho, the djembe? goes right back to the acoustic days...a real pleasure to hear i hoped they were going to run into another track there there was a bit of a groove going.
I'm glad that you've factually proved me wrong luvaduk, I'm clearly just expressing my OPINION on this video and of John Martyn, which is the entire purpose of putting comments to videos on youtube. So unless you have something constructive to argue my opinion, there's not a lot in posting a comment like that, I'd expect it from a 12 yr old. The only fact I made a mistake on was the loss of his leg, but thanks for spotting it and telling me I post crap, your the best! (R.I.P John Martyn)
saw him at The Sage last year too. but i thought he was really bad, was a real shame. Really like his music, and he used to be legendary, but he's past it now. his support act John Smith was really good though, you's should check him out on youtube
Recent relistens have reminded me of the subtle charms of the Solid Air original, but preference is a close-run thing. Guess I think this alternative take on it has a little more to say to our modern messed-up world.
I absolutely love JM and this song in particular, but this overcrowded mess of a jam makes me feel better about all the scruffy open mics I've been to where everyone just wants to play at once, louder than each other and no one really listening. I think John's face at the end says it all; looking at Danny like 'smile for the camera old boy, don't show them how much you hated that!'
The Drummer in my band for one, and my stepdad. You don't "Catch" Gout, its a byproduct of too much Uric Acid in the blood brought on by many things: Poor kidney function, obesity, high blood pressure. Lifestyle and diet have a role to play too. Use ofcertain medicines for other conditions can be a cause too.....
well its down to preference,he certainly did some interesting stuff in the 70s/80s,but I didn't feel it was necessary to re-record all of his earlier songs with too much production and changing his vocals completely.I bought the remasters album and thought it was god awful.I understand that there are a lot of die hard martyn fans out there, but your in denial to think his later live performances are as good as the likes of spencer the rover from the '77 bbc sessions for example
Love the original , but not too keen on this version. Think the instrumentals are very crowded and don’t give John a chance for pause and his very expressionistic style of singing. You can see it on his face at the end and there seemed to be a bit of tension during the performance
John Martyn never forgotten 🌈
Genius talent in every way .
Solid Air 1973 ⭐🌿☮️🎵
Happy 2023 everyone 🌍
THE most underrated songwriter of all time.
The second most underrated songwriter in my opinion, the first is Tim Buckley.
Fax
Him and Town vans zandt
Saw him three times live and he was the best. No doubt.
Years ago I fled a bad situation, I drove 2000 miles in a triumph spitfire which had no tax, MOT, [roof!] or insurance to get away... Wot colour wis the spitfire

WOW .. John, as always never let's us down .. 🙏🏾
These live sessions are some of the very best John Martyn material
What a fabulous string arrangement - celtic feel at times, blending with 'nervy', 'brooding' jazz...classic Martyn. Thanks for the music, John. Thanks for the vid mnemonyx.
This is such a BRILLIANT alternative to the many other versions he played....WOW..... love ya John keep playing up the there in heaven mate!
Great version of a good song, as usual MR.Thompson's contribution should not be overlooked !
Noel McQuaid Thompson's the man.
I saw these two c.74 at some theatre in London, fantastic gig, durinng which some wag shouted " hey Danny ! tell your guitarist to play ****** "
I can't remember the song requested but it got a big laugh, don't think John was too amused.
An alcoholic hard man, but GREAT inspirational guitar player.
I love the last few seconds of it, you could tell he was just so proud of what he'd done by bringing those musicians together, Brilliant
Love this version and the different arrangement. Just makes me appreciate the song even more
John Martyn is amazing! A true genius.
Wrong tense but otherwise correct.
Aye, brilliant. Lucky enough to see him a few times live. Just fantastic.

Amazing art. From John and everyone else in that room.
How am I just now discovering John Martyn? Absolutely love this, feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon his music recently.
The voice, the lyrics, the sentiment and the heart...God bless JM
Johns music has been the soundtrack to my life since I was 17. Go down Easy Big Man. Missing you already...xx
one of my favourite songs. amazing words
this is an exceptionally good version of this song, violins sound beautiful and this was just before John lost his voice completely. Brilliant stuff.
Love the original on Solid Air. The session feel on this acoustic version is great.
Legend!
Thanks to youtube I get to watch these kind of classical performances!

Thankyou for uploading this - it's just fantastic
This works so well!! alternate brilliance.
Pure joy!
faved this, its one of the best ever, blew me a way then as it does know
Real musicians and real talent. Something the modern day music industry has no real interest in.
Class jam with Dónal Lunny from Planxty in the mix. Pure gold.
This is AWESOME! I feel like I'm walking down Canal Street in New Orleans! LOL
SIMPLY LOVE IT!!!!!
John Martyn was the best. No one could combine technique with emotion in such balance. Maybe Mark Knopfler
wicked version love it
Superb...
Love you John and always will
Just superb
this is so good
This was great. Cheers.
Nothing can top this…Nothing! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

Great tune. shame there's not a better version on TH-cam. not that this version is bad. I just love the album version.
the day the folk jazz died...Thanks john. Ilove your music...
nice variation on original version...thanks for posting!
the word of gord
pure enchantment
Merci again!!
John was The man
The drum is a djembe an african drum and very popular in modern folk/celtic music
Holy Zork!!! what a voice....

Grande grandissimo John...
We miss you.
Absolutely FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic Thanks !!! :D.

well said, Richie even played a version of i dont want to know about evil, absolutely brilliant cover
wow love his sound !! its different and i like that. just stumbled on to his music. any one know any thing about him ??
This is really great! Very different from the Solid Air version.
shit... this is great.... i just found this and i love it

showing my best guitarists. we've had rock and blues are a true great John Martyn next is Roy Harper and his 12 string orchestra search if you wish
I wish there was a cracking live of John and Danny doing this tune !! It’s all too busy with brass and fiddles. Still fkn great tho 😎👍
I'm glad that you've factually proved me wrong luvaduk, I'm clearly just expressing my OPINION on this video and of John Martyn, which is the entire purpose of putting comments to videos on youtube. Donal Lunny?
yay that is Donal
Certainly agree with the comment about Grace & Danger. Sublime stuff. >:0)
wow.
nice song
Aye, Dr. John did a mint cover of this too... Methinks that be Donal Lunny from Moving Hearts on bouzouki...
Is that not obvious, so that you would check out Jon Nickoll's Goodbye Sanity of course
RIP John Martyn:
I one day Barak Obama telling the American People "We don't want to know about evil, we only want to know about love"
saw him at The Sage last year too. but i thought he was really bad, was a real shame. Really like his music, and he used to be legendary, but he's past it now. his support act John Smith was really good though, you's should check him out on youtube
yeah, you're right. just the most underrated amongst my piers.lol
Check out Tom Copson's cover for the amazing John Martyn. The video calls: "Tom Copson - 'dont want to know' john martyn acoustic cover"
one word: Malkovich
Recent relistens have reminded me of the subtle charms of the Solid Air original, but preference is a close-run thing. Guess I think this alternative take on it has a little more to say to our modern messed-up world.
The more we advance, the more our steps will lead us back to drops if music like that
not too sure about this version..i feel that the organ/keyboard/whatever it is in the LP version is what makes this song magic
Johnny too bad was the documentry. it is on google video. Check out big muff on youtube with Danny. Amazing. R I P John "motzart" Martyn.
I find it funny that the double bass guy never seems to age in comparison to John ...
Donal, Danny and John ..... the closest to religion ive ever been
I absolutely love JM and this song in particular, but this overcrowded mess of a jam makes me feel better about all the scruffy open mics I've been to where everyone just wants to play at once, louder than each other and no one really listening. He's lost his voice? Really? Why so because?
please
Thats a very young looking Ally Bain on fiddle lol
piszkosul jó!

chachangue: You know what you're saying, brother.
it is messy. and that's what makes it fucking fantastic.
this isn't Bach, dude. It's John Martyn.

Hmm...I dunno, for me it's the Djembe that is the problem. Too loud, man. Too loud.
I like the fiddle and bass groove, it's cool
legend, but who catches gout in this day and age?
Highly recommend his album titled "The Church With One Bell"
You're, but nice one. lol ;)
🕊🙀☠️👩🏼🌾
@TheAnalogical pfffffffffffffffffffft
Seems far too rushed for my liking...
Big John doesn't seem too happy with this one. Danny's glare seems to say "My fiddle is bigger than your fiddles, so pipe down!"
