    DUSTIN!!!! That's the homie!!!
    He used to work at Moog Audio in Toronto and he taught me so much about many different production techniques with many different gear over the years.
    Great to see he's out here teaching the world on all things Roland - I got to see him last week where he demoed his 404 and give a brief history lesson on the SP line over the years.
    Roland did it right by getting him on board in my books!

    Being shown that you can set a sample to one shot mode on the device itself alone made this video worth watching, but there are a ton of cool tips here. Definitely picking up some ways to push the SP into new territory.

    This is a great video! Really shows the power of the instrument. Only thing that I can’t find on the manual is can you send different things out of the left and right output channel? In a live setup it’s very useful to send just your kick out of left for side chaining, or drums out of one output and music out of another depending on what ur going for.

    • @adibanti
      @adibanti ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing that keeps us from being able to execute this entirely on the SP is that we can't set fixed length to samples. Well, technically, you can, but it's a little more finnicky with it. Very cool stuff. I had been using one shot mode but the mute group and pad mutes was revelation.

    This is awesome. I would only say it is disappointing to rely solely on one 2-bit display. The black plastic area below the display could have been a tempo and function indicator display. The black space above could have been a beat light green for play, red for record. Also the solid color knobs could have indicated intensity or level.

    Hey Roland - since you don’t take feature requests anymore and told me to make feature requests on social media here I go:
    MIDI CC editing on the TR8s and SP404mk2 so that we can use the 8s as a midi controller for the SP404mk2. Increases the value of both your machines without encroaching on any other device. You wouldn’t even need to enable this functionality on the machines themselves, just via the editor (like basic midi controllers). This update won’t take up any DSP or CPU headroom.

      I've got the MPC One and just got the 404 in the other day! It's a very different vibe but it has the "fun" factor I feel the MPC kinda lacks! That being said the MPC very much has a huge daw in a box feel! It's a straightforward powerhouse that'll do just about everything you need.
      The MPC is a great sequencer but the 404 is way more fun to sample and modulate audio with imo!
      Honestly if you're really torn, I think I'd still choose to get the 404 and the One with an external 19V battery, about the price of a Live, especially if you buy used!

    What I would actually love is to have the effects being controlled by the pads. Let’s asume I want to activate the effect of beat repeat just for a moment with 1/8 note repeat and activate it just pressing a pad like performance mode. Could be great to have performance effects on pads. As knobs are ok but for certain effects pads could do a better job. Liam, are you thinking on using the 404 again?

    Interesting using the editor. Though its cool its kind of Maschine-esque. I did the same thing this week in Ableton but kept to the roots of the sampler by having its outgoing audio trigger the unit to sample. I have been doing this since the 808 EX days and I feel the incoming signal really gets the flavor of the unit through its input. The 404 definitely has a sound quality to it that is unique.

    Can you record a live performance like this demo as individual per pad tracks as audio into Logic? Or do you just export the performance as a whole track?
    Sorry if this is a proper newb question but I’ve never had my hands on a 404 so have no idea but this demo looks like an ideal option for me to get all my many finished loops arranged into actual tracks.

    • @h-dawg969
      @h-dawg969 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hope that makes sense. For example I can record my drums from tr8s as individual audio tracks per part, so kick, hat, ride, clap etc come out as individual audio tracks rather than having one drums track.
      Can the same be done from the 16 pads of 404 for a jam like this?

    • @LiamKillen
      @LiamKillen  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to export us as a track unfortunately. This is one department that I think is sort of lacking with the SP 404 mk2 - and maybe they’ll enhance it with an update.

    • @h-dawg969
      @h-dawg969 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiamKillen ah that’s a shame. What’s the learning curve on this beast for someone who’s never owned a proper sampler? I use Logic mainly, and own a bit of Hardware (Tr8s, JU06a, TB3) so I’m not a complete newb, butI am where samplers & sampling is involved as I’ve never used a sampler like this.
      I’ve been eyeing either a 404mk2 or an MpcOne as I think a hands on sampler could be fun, but I’m indecisive as I’ve never played about with one.
      It’d be dope to get some arrangements going from my many loops.
      Did u already have knowledge of samplers when you got your first 404?
      How was it to learn, and would you suggest getting an older 404 SX or one of the other ones first to get used to the work flow?
      Cheers man ;)

    • @Sammy-B
      @Sammy-B ปีที่แล้ว

      @@h-dawg969its a strange and quirky beast. Just when you think you've got it, it won't do what you want. Saying that, it CAN do what YOU want. You could record a pattern (anything from 1 bar to 64 bars) with a kick, snare, hats for example. Than you can copy and paste that pattern, but with only the kick. Then you can resample that pattern to a pad, and export that to a DAW. It's not my cup of tea, but it's definitely doable.
