I JUST NOTICED THAT TOO! Sorry for shouting, but it's wild how easy person could miss that. Essentially, this could be called Biometal featuring 2 Unlimited. LoL. Activision, you were quite clever...
I agree that this is not an outstanding game, but it definetely has something to offer. It's a solid experience. The shield mechanic, adds variety and strategy to gameplay.
Listening to both the Japan and US soundtrack..., The US has a total of 6 tracks, 3 actually being full length music tracks while 2 being short tracks going on a loop and 1 just being a speed up version of Metal Insect Lair. The JP version had 18 tracks, (15 being full length music tracks) that provided a dreadful/atmospheric feel to the game itself that suited it really well. The US OST isn't really bad but with only receiving 3 real music tracks... They really should have just stuck with the original JP version instead.
I sorta love how they still play y'all ready for this and jump around, etc. from 30 years ago, at sporting events. It would've been weird to hear songs from the early 60s back then in the same context but here we are.
Gamepro magazine hyped this game so much when they reviewed it. Made the music sound so much more impressive and important to the gameplay than it was. So, I bought it. Then spend most of the time playing with the sound tests than with the actual game. Many weeks of lawn mowing lawns wasted.
Reminds me of how Crazy Taxi on the Sega Dreamcast advertised itself as having a soundtrack of actual licensed songs from The Offspring and Bad Religion. The problem was that there were only four songs in total, which just replayed over and over the entire game.
2 Unlimited were HUGE in Ireland! ...for a couple months anyway. They topped the Irish Singles Charts TWICE, with "Twilight Zone" and again with "No Limit", that one was #1 for FIVE weeks!! It lives on as Session Moth Martina's wrestling themesong
As a 2 Unlimited fan (they are from the Netherlands, so they were pretty popular in Europe) I really liked the music, but was unsatisfied the variety of it inside the game. Because there are only 3 recognisable tracks, namely Get Ready, Twilight Zone, Tribal Dance, the 2 other was made for the game, and honestly there were waay more tracks from them what Activision could implement, but whatever. At least they made a normally run of the mill shooter a bit stand out(because with the original japanese soundtrack it's really the example of "Generic").
The other SNES game (that I know of) that tried this gimmick (replacing the OST with licensed music from a popular music group) was another Activision title already covered previously on this channel: X-Kaliber 2097 featured tracks by fellow techno group Psykosonik.
I remember my best friend renting this one from Blockbuster back in the day. We both liked Gradius III and thought it looked cool. We still had fun playing it, but it's as you said, kind of lackluster when compared to other titles, and the lack of 2 player was a bit of a bummer. Still, good memories. I totally forgot about this game, which now I remember why.
Two things I remember about this game: 1) the music 2) my half brother let me have this game back in 97, and he’s still waiting for me to give it back, even tho he hate it… so did I btw
Loved and hated this game. Bought it for like $8 dollars brand new from the store and thought it was the coolest game in the world because it had 2 Unlimited's music in it. ...I still feel that way and still own it.
2 Unlimited has a couple of very cool upbeat Songs, go for it. The Mortal Kombat Music is also inspired by them. Edit: tribal Dance is the Song that inspired Mortal Kombat
My buddy and I loved this game so much when we were kids. So much, in fact, that we wrote to Nintendo Power requesting BioMetal 2. We'd also call into radio stations requesting 2 Unlimited songs and get super nervous if we ended up talking to the DJs.
It always kinda amuses me that for “Techno Syndrome”, The Immortals(in reality Lords of Acid) sampled 2 Unlimited’s “Twilight Zone”, which itself used a sped-up sample from Sandra’s “Maria Magdalena”. Sandra’s husband(now ex)? Enigma, as in, “Modern Crusaders” and “Return to Innocence”. Just a neat little tree, I think.
Speaking of Shumps, I'd love to hear you cover The Biohazard Battle on the Sega Genesis. The music in that game feels like it is straight out of a horror movie, and genuinely creeped me out when I was a kid.

I know it wasn't your complete cup of coffee, but, you are incredibly insightful and your reviews are absolute gold. I love your content and love it more that you showed me this 2 Unlimited gem!
Huh i was just having a conversation a week ago about how Biometal had 2unlimted in the non JP soundtrack. I'm fairly certain the PAL EU version also has 2 unlimited but I'm not sure if it's speed corrected for 50hz. I'd have to play the PAL rom as I've only ever seen the NTSC-U version. Says on the wiki it's EU and NA. Edit: game just has novelty value for the music, otherwise it's just an average shooter. Like you say play Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) instead, that's one of the best shmups (that's not bullet hell) on the snes, easily my fav shooter.
I think the sky level flying through a storm actually looks pretty cool but yeah, it does go by a bit fast and that can screw with your vision trying to track projectiles and all.
Super Nova shoutout made this video for me :) My copy is still bugged and won't let you pass the 3rd level XD I only know because I've beaten it on ROM but could never get passed one certain part !!
I have mixed feelings about that first stage background It's legitimately pretty cool, and one my personal most favorite parts of horizontal shmups is the sense of speed and flight it imparts compared to vertical, which it does a good job of! But it's definitely kinda hard to look at lol
Shmups are on my top 5 game genres; A-RPG, Fighting, Racing, Shmup, Platformers... in that order. And yes, while those 2 games features the "full" 2-Unlimited song, there's another game with music heavily inspired by 2-Unlimited. Can't remember if X-Kaliber or Run Saber.
It’s a shame they don’t have other songs of theirs on it. I’m shocked the PAL one didn’t have them on the track considering how big they were here in the U.K.
Good review! I love shmups, so I might give this one a shot just to at least try it. It at least looks "passable" at best. Though, that music seems a little distracting! 😅
In emulation you can probably turn off the background temporarily in level 1. I remember doing that for the foreground in the dark cave in Secret of Evermore for example :)
May offer a suggestion for a game I haven't seen reviewed before? 'Mecarobot Golf', published by Toho in 1993. The music is surprisingly good. Very relaxing.

Looks decent-ish. But what I really want to do now is play NHL ‘96. IIRC, this is the post North Stars, pre-Wild era so I understand why we don’t see more hockey vids from you.
Just noticed at 2:46 that the pilots are also named after the band members of 2 Unlimited. Ray and Anita.

Almost surprised they didn't replace the portraits with colour reduced promo photos of the band members :P

I still have a picture of 14 year old me getting this game and Donkey Kong Country for Christmas back in 1994. I loved that Christmas.
Same here with Donkey Kong Country. I actually tried to play it before opening the rest of my gifts.
Earthworm Jim was my xmas present choice that year

As someone who listened to the Jock Jams albums constantly as a kid, I'm delighted to learn that 2 Unlimited scored a SNES game.
Now that I've finally watched one of these videos in the morning, "Have a great rest of your day" feels great to hear
I agree that this is not an outstanding game, but it definetely has something to offer. It's a solid experience. The shield mechanic, adds variety and strategy to gameplay.
That SNES chiptune version of Get Ready for This is pretty nice. NGL
Some real Dolby Pro Logic-like "surround" flipped samples right there, at least on my monitors (Like the intro in Future Crew's Second Reality)

I miss the Gary Glitter song Rock and Roll pt 2
Biometal has a sort-of sequel: "Biometal Gust" which is a sample game in Athena's shooting game maker Deza 2 on the Sega Saturn
Alongside Ramsie and Daioh P (semi-sequel to the arcade game Daioh)
That soundtrack was a surprise. I was not ready for this.
I see what you did there

But did they lie?
Some people may remember 2 Unlimited for their tracks in Dance Dance Revolution.
When the song kicked in I went to check if some other tab started playing something in the background
2 Unlimited was big in the Eurodance Era in Germany, they had multiple hits. They were Ray and Anita from the Netherlands
And the producers were Belgian
Wait, the playable chracters are named after 2 Unlimited members as well???

Oh, yes. The unofficial soundtrack of the mid 90s. That song really was everywhere for a few years, showing up in movies and commercials and stuff.
One of the ways I judge a a shmup is by whether or not it requires a turbo button to properly shoot its primary weapons.

Too bad the 1st prize for 'Most banging techno/DnB soundtrack in a Shmup' was already awarded to Xenon 2 - Megablast.
