Caught some monsters on the Niagara on the 21st of March, 3 that were more than 11 lbs. Plus we got the bases loaded grand slam. Brown, Steel, Laker and Walleye all in one morning. I love watching your videos boys!
Man! A few months ago I put up some comments and we were talking back and forth about how you guys should show us your pin rigs and shotting patterns, and you actually made it part of a vid! Frigid weather on the water, but awesome fish make it worth it. Tight lines!
best part was when u filmed the bobber going down! getting to see the strikes "bobber Down" in these videos or any steelhead videos are the best i think!!
Great vid JB & Rick. Sometimes your buddies get all the fish. I took two last wkd in the MI NW on the last day. I really liked to addition of the rig explanation and music and video alterations like you used to do when wading and videoing. Keep it up!
The day of Rick -- it had to do with more than the technique; it was the Kromer! haha Excellent video;as always. I would be interested in knowing what type of boat that you guys run.
What the heck was wrong with that first fish? How many batteries do you bring along for the gopros? Or are there just that many fish in the area you can turn the cameras cast out and hook up like your buddy did? Good stuff JB as always...Gonzo...
That first fish was a misfit from the hatchery. Birth defects I think? Not sure. During a day's worth of fishing we'll go through 5 or 6 gopro batteries. Not too bad considering we run 3 cameras.
May I ask where you were fishing when this took place? ? Amazing video.. looks fun as hell.. awesome job.. with a few added beauties .. I will make it a life goal to do something like this... I'm utterly jealous
Could you tell me about the diff colorations in steelhead? I caught a 30"10# the other day that was more rainbow trout in color vs the darker fish you catch. It had the salmonoid jaw. But was just silver and light pink stripe. Is it just going thru it's spawning change and may get darker? Idk if it was male or female. Tried to squeeze its area to see if anything would come out nada. Seems like I'd know but I don't really know the diff. If it helps it was st Clair river in pt Huron. I've seen u catch smaller and larger w a darker tone. #catch&release. Great videos as always.
The darker or more colored up a fish is, the longer it's been in the river system. The fish you see in many of our videos, have been in the river for weeks, if not months. They tend to blend into their surroundings. Hence, big lake fish will be silver, river fish will be darker. To determine the sex of a steelhead, look to see if it's jaw goes backward past it's eye. Males have longer bottom jaws, females are shorter. So a hens jaw won't go past her eye, whereas a buck's will. Older males will also develop a kype (the hooked lower jaw.)
All of your videos should have many more views. You guys do a great job! I live and fish in West Michigan as well. Seems like you have a lot of river figured out. Do you guide, or just fish a lot? BTW, boot of the year at 3:35!
Hey folks. Wonderful video.I don't want to seem dumb, but what kind of rods do you use ? It seems to me like a fly fishing rods, but combined wth float fishing. Am I right ?
+Camber Luboš Those are centerpin setups. The reel looks like a fly reel, but it has no drag. It just free spools, allowing the current to take your float downstream.
i'm not sure if you'll see this or not but i began float fishing for steelhead this past winter, right now i've just been using a 7' M Spinning combo, would i be better off investing in centerpin gear or just getting a better spinning combo (like a 8' 6" ML)
Both centerpins and spinning combos have a time and place. Many hardcore steelhead addicts have both! Centerpins really shine on larger flows. Keep the spinning outfit for smaller streams.
The Consummate Sportsman thanks for the reply, I usually do fish smaller streams, now with spinning gear, do i wanna cast upstream and close bail let it float down or keep it open? this is probably a really stupid question.
Blxr Open and close the bail. Don't just leave it open. You've got to find the balance between feeding line to the current for a drag free drift, and being ready for a strike to set the hook.
Perfect! How is it cool, guys! Thank you for your work. I dream to do something similar, but not as many fish. Waiting for new video! PS Uncover the secret to catch that? Looks like silicone bait and its size? Where can I see?
Thanks, Ivan! The bait we were using was cured salmon eggs, tied in small sacks. You can see our process of egg preservation in this video: th-cam.com/video/yPsryzBUUpk/w-d-xo.html
Jig-flies no result. And from an ordinary silicone twister orange attacks trout and losos.Tak have long caught the local fishermen. I'm trying to catch beads, but to no avail.
Better yet, explain why sea run fish should be called steelhead, and lake runs shouldn't be? Both are migratory rainbows. They're basically the same sized fish as well, excluding the rare giant specimen that occasionally appears in B.C.
Sorry, I did not mean to sound rude. This is obviously a horse that has been beaten to death already. My opinion however after research is that a true Steelhead simply goes from fresh to salt and back. Here in Washington the WDFW shut down a lot of hatcheries and they ended up putting a lot of steelhead smolts in a few lakes around here. Alot just feel that as soon as this happened those fish can no longer be classed as chromers anymore. This does not degrade your guys' fish over there however. I just think they should be called really big really pissed off rainbows.
+Dan Hayden I understand your viewpoint. Can't really argue the salt to fresh point. They've been referred to as "steelhead" here in the great lakes for years. Long before my time. I just go with the flow. :)
+Dan Hayden well steelhead are anadromous so yes you are right. its funny bc alot of these strains of steelhead end up back in the great lakes so in its kind of the same behavior just at a minuscule scale that the ocean has. and i also might be completely wrong bc there is no salt water but i think the behavior of the species is the same
+Dan Hayden It's a Great Lakes thing. There seems to be 2 distinct types of Rainbow. The typical pink with dots "rainbow" which are football shaped, then your pure silver/grey (maybe a slight pink tinge) torpedo shaped ones which are "steelhead". Both types never hit the ocean and stay within the lakes. In the Great Lakes area it basically comes down to this: call it either and people will know what you're talking about.
That 1st fish was so f'd up! Just another reason why they shouldnt call them steelhead.... It would be like hunting domesticated turkeys and calling them Wild Turkeys. Nothing more than dumb lake trout! Sorry nothing against you...

This should be a weekly TV show. You guys are great!!!
Absolutely love the effortless net job on the first fish!

Great video guys. Always a pleasure to watch. Love the comment "IS THAT A STURGEON!" lol
Miss you guys making videos. Wish one of you would get back into it.
Why don't you come down to central MI and go bass fishing once the lakes thaw out sometime! My treat!
Haha awesome! Nice of him to let you land a jumbo skipper on the day of Rick.

Outstanding video guys! Thanks for putting in the set up in this video maybe ill catch one of those infamous egg wagons next time out.
The day of Rick -- it had to do with more than the technique; it was the Kromer! haha Excellent video;as always. I would be interested in knowing what type of boat that you guys run.
You guys are awesome, love to catch one of those trophys.
Looks like fun...some pretty fish.
You guys are great could you please make more centrepin vids on steelhead or chinnys

What centerpin reel do you recommend best bang for your buck? Looking to get my first centerpin reel this Christmas. Thank you!
Love your videos guys, just one quick question, do you only do catch and release or do you keep some of your catches?
The day of Rick!?!? Ha ha, love your videos. Do you have any reviewing your gear (rod/reel/line)? Thanks!
No, we don't but I can put one together.
Its about time Rick caught something on video.

Thanks! We just fish for fun. No guides here. And yes, the fish at 3:35 was quite bootilicious! Haha.
i like this channel, hope to see more vids my man
what rod do you use for that islander?
You fellas are NASTY. Do either of you guide? I’m in SE Michigan and would love to come out ASAP.

if it has no drag, how do the fish not spool you right in the beginning?
What kind of reel is Rick using? Is that a Ross flow or is that a cheaper knockoff version I've seen on eBay for 50$
hahaha this was fuckin awesome, gotta pick up a boat to fish some of the more remote parts of the huron tributaries.
You guys are awesome Fishermen!! ^^ what type of bait or lures were you using?
16 8 Spawn (roe) bags, and jigs.
Ah ok then , cause I fish too
FishingMaster Studios is that so?
uh yeah?
Nice Video! Just got my First pin and still learning to use it 😁 #catchandrelease 👌🏼

Thank you, now it is clear. But we do not bite in the rivers for salmon eggs. Difficult to pick up the bait for float fishing.
***** Perhaps try flies? Or plastic grubs?
Jig-flies no result. And from an ordinary silicone twister orange attacks trout and losos.Tak have long caught the local fishermen. I'm trying to catch beads, but to no avail.
Is that yellow pole you have the camera on something you bought or made?
That's an extendable painters stick from the hardware store.
Great video. Nice to see you guys catch and release 👍 Not everything needs to go in the pan 😊
Great vid, gens. I'm a novice to center pin, could you share what rods and reels you're using please? Thank you.
must have been useing the baby bass lol
Catchin' fish and shootin' shit. Good times.
have u use trout beads ever in Michigan
Nice vid just subscribed
1:21 Heyuguise!
have u use trout beads ever
Not sure what a hash tag is but that was a pound sign in front of the words. .....
what river is this?
what kinda reel is the silver one. Ricks i believe.
That's a Ross Flow.
Do you guys put floats in your spawn sacs?
No. You want the bag to hang below your shot, not float up.
Fun fun
Can you explain how you guys come up with the notion to call these big rainbow trout steelhead?
Better yet, explain why sea run fish should be called steelhead, and lake runs shouldn't be? Both are migratory rainbows. They're basically the same sized fish as well, excluding the rare giant specimen that occasionally appears in B.C.
