Hey everyone! You'll likely notice some focus issues throughout the video - sorry about that! I think I accidentally hit my foreground "de-focus" button instead of adding slight blur to my background. Anyway...we'll get it back on track next time. Cheers, Tim
Thanks for the tip from this U.K. record collector who’s been through a few copies of each since the late 80s . After obtaining the classic records pressing of Zep 1 I sold my 80s German / strawberry presses. To me the classic records pressings sound the best on all their albums. Roxy Music , I concur with the Pink rim but I’ve had a few copies and some oddly sound clearer than others . ‘For your pleasure’ , i whole heartedly recommend the EMI 100 1997 press. Not big money but blows my original out the water . Ian
Hey Tim I'm a relatively new student but I've been doing my homework. Yesterday at a local shop I found a copy of LZ1. It was a re-release with a 5 digit catalogue number beginning with 19. When I checked the deadwax I immediately found the at/gp so I knew it was a Piros. I looked further and it had a delta symbol and some. I also found the cross or plus sign with nothing in the quadrants. It was also well taken care of. Thanks for your efforts Tim.
I bought a used copy of a GP mastered Zep debut in 85 at a shop called Underground Records. I knew it sounded great on my little cheap equipment of the time but had no idea why until later on. I still have that copy. I have some other titles that I can't think of right now, but I remember seeing his initials in the runout. Yes, the Zep 1 kicks maximum arse!! Every time I play it, the wife says, "Turn it down," and it's not even turned up loud. Great video lesson, Tim 👍
Hey Tim. I have the original US copy of Roxy Music on Reprise. I didn’t know it was reissued on Atco. My copy sounds okay ( not great). Do you have the infamous 74 Country Life lp with the naughty girls on the cover? Also I forgot to mention their 2nd album For Your Pleasure on Warner (US) in 73 ! I’ve never heard any imports to compare with. Great video as always.
Hi Jack, I do have that scandalous Country Life :-). I have to check if I currently have For Your Pleasure....I'm pretty sure a George Piros cut is also available for that one on ATCO, late 70's - 80's.
Turn to manual focus, put a marker (cinematographers call them gaffer tape, but you can use anything as long as you got the rangefinder right on ur lens) where you are going to sit, set up a proper exposure, and off you go, DO NOT USE AUTO FOCUS function.....
Thanks for sharing! I just checked my copy and have the very same LED ZEPPELIN I that you have. 1974 GP Rockefeller on the label. You were going to say what this cogs value was, but you never finish ?
I own both @tGP ‘74 Zep I and ‘77 Zeppelin II, they both sound AMAZING. Zeppelin II is very close to my RL. I used to own Classic Records Zep I which didn’t impress me too much. I ended up selling it for quite a few bucks, which helped me fund a parasound phono preamp ☺️
Really good segment I’m sure I have the Led Zeppelin I George Piros as mentioned. I bought a Led Zeppelin II RL V++ for 30.00 because it was warped and wow it was Lol So I just purchased the RecordPi record flattener after about 14 hours it’s flat but still has this unusual slight warped out of shape in one section. Needless to say at this point can’t play the first song but all the others perfectly so I’m satisfied with the results. It doesn’t guarantee to fix everything. Thank You
Cat Stevens - Tea For The Tillerman on the Pink Island label sounds great and is the definitive pressing of that great album. The “standard”A&M lacks the “slam” and “punch” of the pink island counterpart.
@@Universityofvinyl thanks tim i was gonna try to find a island pink rim uk but im glad i didnt after watching your video. Plus i like the fact that this usa cut has virginia plain on it and my other reissues dont. Plus george piros cut so i know its going to sound good.
Great video. Would be nice if you could post discogs’s link of the specific pressing you are talking about. There are a lot of versions and sometimes is hard to find the one. Thank you
Well there are only 3 pressings on Discogs from 1974 with GP in the deadwax, and only one with the Rockefeller address on the label, so that narrows it down pretty well.
Yes, this Led Zep 1974, Piros, Monarch pressing is one of the best versions ever ! I used to own many versions, UK Plum, 200g Classic Records, to name a few. Beside this Piros cut i do also have a German (Alsdorf) pressing with UK Strawberry mastering -A2x /-B3x GB (early '80 ?), even better ! 😉
How did the Rocky Mountain show treat ya? It seemed smaller with the new venue. Agree, GPs are highly regarded for LZI. Ever compare LZII RL and GP? I think a lot people sleep on the GP cut
I got the Led Zeppelin one. I never heard an RL Zep II though. Are you serious? It lives up to that, or did you have a couple glasses of scotch after listening to Steely Dan? I’ll have to check on the Roxy Music, unsure if I have a GP pressing.
Hey Tim thanks for the tips. Curious if you’ve heard the Pink Rim of Roxy Music Debut? I own it and think it sounds actually pretty awesome, but it’s easy enough to find this one and compare. Could you provide a Discogs link to both. Also, you mentioned AT/GP did LZI in 1972, 1974 and 1976. Do you only recommend the 74 or are all of his masterings comparable across the years? Now back to work on the syllabus!
Hey Tim! Have you listened to the UK Island pink rim Roxy Music debut? While I don’t have the ATCO pressing, however , in comparing my UK OG to the Half Speed, there is no doubt which wins on my system. The Half Speed is bloated, lacks depth and separation and the vocals are buried in some songs. I’ll be seeking the ATCO Piros out of curiosity to hear what I am missing.
Are all the 70s GP cuts similarly great, or is the 1974 cut particularly special? I noticed someone else in the comments mentioned the 1977 Piros cut not being as good. Just not sure if I need to look for only this one, or if I would be good with any earlier cut with GP in the deadwax. Thanks for any thoughts!
Remember if you didn’t have a good collection of original pressings and no expensive MOFI, UHGR etc albums then what would you have to present and talk about? 😅.
You realize of course that you left all of us in *TOTAL* suspense when you made the statement, 'And the median price for this on Discogs is...' and then you switched the subject... 🙄
Oh plz….let’s be honest, OG pressings don’t necessarily sound superior, I refer to the majority. You are buying them for your own personal ego and to show and say we have in our possession something that is rare and very few can obtain. That’s the real reason for this drive to get hard to find albums. Same as my addiction to buying older vintage rare automobiles. They don’t necessarily drive better than my modern cars but they give status points and an ego boost to own and drive them around others. So let’s be honest with ourselves.

Hi, your contents are always greatly appreciated, thx.
Fantastic stuff Professor Tim. I’m always looking for George due to your mastering lectures.
My fav videos of yours I like are the what to look for videos. I wish you had a list of those to look for ? That would be cool
Seconded. I had to take notes throughout the steely Dan videos!

I always enjoy the content you bring 👍
I appreciate that!
LZ1 of any pressing rarer than rocking horse s*** here in NZ. Tim, this was a very disjointed YT video today, but still a subscriber.
Absolutely on the money with that '74 pressing. Scored one about a month ago in a lot.

Yes! I have the same George Piros Zeppelin II pressing and it is an amazing pressing with great dynamics. It is a sleeper pressing for Zep II.
I’ll have to check it out Thank You
Just so you know, the later Piros cut of LZI (1977?) when he started using an @ symbol in his signature, sounds quite different. I have heard both.
Thanks 👍🏻

I have 1976 Atco pressing with the yellow label, sans gatefold, that has 'at@gp' in the dead wax. Sounds quite good.
thanks for heads up on roxy music gp cut i have abbey road and 2018 virgin both digital sourced im sure and wanted a good AAA cut of this
Enjoy

Hi Tim have you listened to The Capitol Vaults pressings.
I think it’s the first 4 albums. I believe if so I would love to know your thoughts? 👍
Not yet!
Glad there is a good cut of Roxy Music first LP, I thought it didn't sound well produced?
