I had this arcade machine in my basement when I was a kid...My dad got it from some liquor store he worked part time at...Ended up breaking and they just trashed it...I was too young to really do anything about it, but damn I had a lot of fun playing it!
Great memories i remember playing this game for hours on end with my little sister. come to think of it though we never did beat the game, always got stuck in one of the walls. Gotta love the nintendo gliches.
I remember this. I used to play it on the NES. I haven't played it in a long time though. I totally didn't remember the arcade cabinet though with the two joysticks. That's cool I'd like to see that. I'll have to do some research on my own ha
I loved this game alot. i used to end the arcade in 1 quarter. when i played it for nes and made it to what i thought was the end in 1 game with out using the abba cheat i was blown away. 3 times the size of the arcade makes this game awsome
Good memories. As a kid, me and dad could play this title for hours each night. (Though, it took Jetboot Jack for him to play without me around.) And, I do agree...if Contra can get modern games, Ikari is well overdue.
I remember playing this game with my friend and brothers back in the early 90's, the things I remember most about this game was one each board(we called game levels "boards"don't know why) was really long close to if not over a hour it seemed, I also remember there where parts where you could get stuck on a wall after a death where you player comes running back on the screen, if there was a wall there and he didn't clear it before you gained control over him once you stopped blinking.
this was my first game on my famicom 4-in-1 cartridge. And also my first game I played. The game had a really long lifespan since it was pretty huge. Luckily the store told me the cheat of A,B,B,A for endless reviving. At that time, I didn't realise it was even a cheat because I don't think you'll ever make it to the ending without it.
Yeah it would be nice to see some games like this now days. Last thing I played close to this on the PS3 was Commando 3 and it was too dam easy. Anyhow awesome video man.
YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THE MISSION. YOU ARE THE VERY PREVAILER THAT PROTECT RIGHT AND JUSTICE. I WOULD EXPRESS MY SINCERE. THANKS TO YOU. TAKE GOOD REST ! GENERAL KAWASAKI
yeah, me and my buddy played this all the time when I was a kid; you're so right though, it has not aged well. I have no idea why we played it so much. possibly because the "meatheads with bandanas and machine guns" theme was really, well, pretty cool when you're like 8.
I loved this arcade game, 2player was awesome. I never made it to the helicopter though, way too hard...Commando was also good! Double dragon, original Street fighter, Rampage, Shinobi, Golden axe, Gauntlet, Atered beast, Robocop...
Actually, the arcade version of this has just been released as a PS3 mini on PSN, and I'd imagine it's got a port to XBLA now, too. Still handles a little wonky, as L/R rotates your character, and man, is it BRUTAL. While the NES port was somewhat beatable, unless somehow you got spawn-stuck in the center and unable to move during that part where you move through the side gaps of the fort walls (breaking bug!), the arcade version is a quarter-munching nightmare...
Before "Metal Slug," there was "Ikari Warriors." I mean, you get to drive a tank and chopper in Ikari Warriors, many years before you could do the same thing in the "Metal Slug" series. Nice review, by the way!
Don't remember whether or not I ever beat this game, sorta remember getting to what I presumed to be the fianl boss, which was some kind of fireball spitting skull, if my memory serves correct. kinda remember getting stuck on that part as well, and lastly I remember a game similar to Ikari Warriors called Guerilla War, which was much faster paced and much shorter.
I can't imagine what this game must look like on the 2600! I consider Assault Heroes to be the unofficial remake of Ikari Warriors and another good reason to buy an Xbox 360.
I'd like to see someone complete this game using just the first set of lives/guys you get. I remember using the "continue trick" over and over and over and sometimes getting stuck behind some of the walls with no enemies to kill me... then you had to wait for the missiles to come flying at you and you BEGGED to get hit, sometimes you did, and sometimes not.
Not rare but if found sealed it would be costly. Most of the classic ones sealed usually are because collectors hunt them down like you wouldn't believe.
... Between the infalliable numbers of enemies, and how beefed up most of them are/were (ones armed with Super Grenades, especially), there are some sections that are absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to get through without simply quarter-grinding your way through them. And the side-oriented arrow traps seem both invincible and undodgable; there's no way you'll move through them quick enough to escape being killed, and there's no break in their firing rate either. It's still fun, though.
Yeah, I doubt Ralf Jones and Clark Steel are going to be going back into the jungles of Brazil anytime soon. They're too busy fighting in the King of Fighters at the moment. I agree though, I'd love to see a new Ikari Warriors game on the modern consoles as a downloadable.
They should remake these games for newer systems with dual analog controllers. They could also make a special dual joystick controller that comes with it.
The Atari ST version wasn't bad, but not great either, what I found best for some reason was the Amstrad 464CPC version. No idea why. Both of which look different from this NES version. Not necessarily better graphics, but the maps feel different and there are IIRC, less objects in this version.
Oh god yes I agree the new controllers would make for a better Ikari Warriors... This was the first game I bought when I bought my NES, they where out of the systems that had SMB and I couldn't wait any longer lol Honestly I felt kind of ripped off when I bought it on the NES the game is great the controls are what was the let down.. Heavy Barrel is very close you might like that one too. or Jackal or Time Soldiers. Anyway MAME FTW ;) and thanks for the memories! Good review !!!
Maybe this question has been asked a million times before, but when I had this game as a kid (1986ish) I , (like many others) got to the very end of the game, only to find that the road stopped. In other words, I dead ended . I was alive, all enemies dead, but there I stood, after killing off the "main bad guy"..no where else to go...I had to just turn off the game. No announcement that I had won or anything...just sat there...
Great version of the game, coming to the Switch aswell in the 40th anniversary for 40 dollars, good deal for Ikari Warriors NES. I give the NES version a 100 out of 10, everyone play it, much better than arcades.
ok, i could have mentioned that there is also a "commando 3" sequel, but i didnt want to turn out being such a wiseass. neither i do have a xbox360...what for?
A MAME machine with legit games would be nice. Like the X-Arcade machine for $2,000. I know it's expensive, but you can also connect your console to it, so you could play your console games on a stand-up machine.
Not a bad port for it's time.Though i did enjoy it alot more then part two.I got nothing to say on ikari warriors 3 i never played it. Now if snkp could just put the arcade version of ikari warriors in a collection ~_^
I could play this NES title a little while (definately better 2-p). I was able to beat Guerilla War with under $5.00 at the arcade back when. Now that I am almost 3x older, I need infinite lives for the free download from playstation store B^|
When you kill the enemies, they look like Fred Sanfod having a heart attack. Elisabeth this is the big one!!!
Actually that's where from SNK brought Ralf & Clark characters of KOF series :)
and the music from this game is in KOF XIV, but only when those two fight each other
Vintage SNK, this game went on to inspire features that are in future SNK games.
This brings back some memories! Hot game in the neighborhood growing up.
One of my favorite childhood games. Please bring it back out.
I had this arcade machine in my basement when I was a kid...My dad got it from some liquor store he worked part time at...Ended up breaking and they just trashed it...I was too young to really do anything about it, but damn I had a lot of fun playing it!
One of my favourite games for the NES. Loved playing this as a kid!
Loved this game in the arcade. Played many a quarter on this, Rush n' Attack and Bad Dudes a lot.
It was cool how the game progressed with each sequel. This was a good series. Guerilla War was a great game aswell.
Nice review of Ikari Warriors!
I remember play this game years ago.
One of my favorite games as a kid, why isn't it on Wii VC yet?
I loved this game alot.
i used to end the arcade in 1 quarter.
when i played it for nes and made it to what i thought was the end in 1 game with out using the abba cheat i was blown away. 3 times the size of the arcade makes this game awsome

I really hope MArk finds the arcade machine and has a camera nearby at the time. The first CGR arcade review? One can only hope.
Retro...loved this game when i found it in the arcade....wonder if Nintendo have it on the Wii online back catalogue
Thanks for posting this good review. I played Ikari Warriors many times.
i love this game!!!! I understand why people hate it but sure as hell don't! It's one of my favorite NES games.
Ikari Warriors was my very first game rental...my friend rented Castlevania.
I remember playing this game with my friend and brothers back in the early 90's, the things I remember most about this game was one each board(we called game levels "boards"don't know why) was really long close to if not over a hour it seemed, I also remember there where parts where you could get stuck on a wall after a death where you player comes running back on the screen, if there was a wall there and he didn't clear it before you gained control over him once you stopped blinking.
i must have passed this game like 200 times. it was addicting
this was my first game on my famicom 4-in-1 cartridge. And also my first game I played. The game had a really long lifespan since it was pretty huge. Luckily the store told me the cheat of A,B,B,A for endless reviving. At that time, I didn't realise it was even a cheat because I don't think you'll ever make it to the ending without it.
Have you played Ikari today?
Yeah it would be nice to see some games like this now days. Last thing I played close to this on the PS3 was Commando 3 and it was too dam easy. Anyhow awesome video man.
did you know Ralf and Clark from The king of fighters series are from this game? i think Heidern and Leona are too but im not for sure......
awesome game but whats with the pink tank?
You should do a review of Gunsmoke for the NES sometime!
If you look at Super Stardust HD it has the same control idea as the arcade version of Ikari Warriors.
I love how you get 50 grenades. Isn't that a little excessive?
how long do the enemies reel back for after being blasted hehe
playstation blog just said this game is coming out on july 19th it says it will be one of the minis but idk if iyt will be the old school one or what.
YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THE MISSION. YOU ARE THE VERY PREVAILER THAT PROTECT RIGHT AND JUSTICE. I WOULD EXPRESS MY SINCERE. THANKS TO YOU. TAKE GOOD REST ! GENERAL KAWASAKI

still a great looking game from 1986, nice video man!
I loved this arcade game, 2player was awesome. I never made it to the helicopter though, way too hard...Commando was also good! Double dragon, original Street fighter, Rampage, Shinobi, Golden axe, Gauntlet, Atered beast, Robocop...
Seriously, I've been waiting for a second volume of SNK Arcade Collection.
you're right...I just found out
They're called the "Ikari Team" from 94 up to now...
Actually, the arcade version of this has just been released as a PS3 mini on PSN, and I'd imagine it's got a port to XBLA now, too. Still handles a little wonky, as L/R rotates your character, and man, is it BRUTAL.
While the NES port was somewhat beatable, unless somehow you got spawn-stuck in the center and unable to move during that part where you move through the side gaps of the fort walls (breaking bug!), the arcade version is a quarter-munching nightmare...
i think there was a good sinclair spectrum version of ikari warriors
Great review I really enjoy it..
Classic! Great review!
Before "Metal Slug," there was "Ikari Warriors." I mean, you get to drive a tank and chopper in Ikari Warriors, many years before you could do the same thing in the "Metal Slug" series. Nice review, by the way!
Before "Ikari Warriors", there was "Combat" where you get to drive a tank and a chopper.
Combat?
Don't remember whether or not I ever beat this game, sorta remember getting to what I presumed to be the fianl boss, which was some kind of fireball spitting skull, if my memory serves correct. kinda remember getting stuck on that part as well, and lastly I remember a game similar to Ikari Warriors called Guerilla War, which was much faster paced and much shorter.
I like how the dead guys just float off into the abyss. Review the 2600 version, to maximize your frustration.
there is a rare overlooked coin-op version, the gameplay is unique
the rare controls seem to be gone....
i love this it realy takes me back thanx
I have an ikari warriors arcade machine but it doesnt have rotating joysticks...
i know it ain't the same but you can play as the guys from this game on King of Fighters as well as Metal Slug 6 & 7
I can't imagine what this game must look like on the 2600!
I consider Assault Heroes to be the unofficial remake of Ikari Warriors and another good reason to buy an Xbox 360.

cool review please review the new bionic commando not nes or rearmed the NEW new remake that came out on the 19th of this may
I tried searching for this game brand new sealed and couldn't find it. Is it worth a lot or considered rare?
Not rare but if found sealed it would be costly. Most of the classic ones sealed usually are because collectors hunt them down like you wouldn't believe.
Not rare at all. If you find a sealed 5 screw version it might be worth something.
It's still fun, though.
cool, i did not know that, but u have to admit, that even though that, the game is pretty badass
You can get the arcade version of this game on PSN now!
This game reminds me of an upbeat version of Front Line.
They could also make a special dual joystick controller that comes with it.
will u reveiw ikari warriors 2
gurilla war for the NES also by SNK, is almost the same game
my apologies! you could try Ikari Warriors for the NES instead?
@SolidSnake684 Guerrilla War destroys Ikari Warriors. That is my go to game for shooting everything that moves. That flamethrower rocks!
um... they didn't release it for the PDP-1!
No comment about the look of the tiny pink tank?
I prefer the Atari 7800 port: you can actually strafe while shooting. The Amiga and Atari ST versions are pretty good too.
I have this on the 7800, not really played on it though
!!!! FINALLY !!! MARK you are awesome!
The Atari ST version wasn't bad, but not great either, what I found best for some reason was the Amstrad 464CPC version. No idea why.
Both of which look different from this NES version. Not necessarily better graphics, but the maps feel different and there are IIRC, less objects in this version.
your videos are so good that i need a auto rating software to give all 5 stars^^
Ralf Jones (red) and Clark Steel (blue) and they have been in every KoF.
Oh god yes I agree the new controllers would make for a better Ikari Warriors...
This was the first game I bought when I bought my NES, they where out of the systems that had SMB and I couldn't wait any longer lol
Honestly I felt kind of ripped off when I bought it on the NES the game is great the controls are what was the let down.. Heavy Barrel is very close you might like that one too. or Jackal or Time Soldiers.
Anyway MAME FTW ;) and thanks for the memories! Good review !!!
doesn't work on level 3 :(
i used to looove this one
sandly the IKARI WORIORS team united with the METAL SLUG team in the last 3 metal slug games
this was the "call of duty" of the day, this game was AWESOME!!!
My brother and I used to get to the end and the game would just stop
Gotta love how 80s video games were filled with Rambo knock off and the 70s games had Star Wars knock offs.
At 5:17 you mention the Wii U. How is that possible when this video was posted in 2009!?
He just said Wii
I like Heavy Barrel more. That game was kick ass.
No announcement that I had won or anything...just sat there...
i request a review for contra on the genesis, is pobably the best contra ever
This game was much better on the Atari ST and Amiga, classic game none the less.
Typo I meant to say that classic game said it was by SNK
Mark, if you like Ikari Warriors, you just HAVE to play and review Guerrilla War for NES, also made by SNK. It's 85% better than Ikari Warriors.
Great version of the game, coming to the Switch aswell in the 40th anniversary for 40 dollars, good deal for Ikari Warriors NES.
I give the NES version a 100 out of 10, everyone play it, much better than arcades.
$40 dolllars? Lol thats a rip off. I just bought the original Ikari Warriors NES cartridge for $8 dollars.
ok, i could have mentioned that there is also a "commando 3" sequel, but i didnt want to turn out being such a wiseass. neither i do have a xbox360...what for?
A MAME machine with legit games would be nice. Like the X-Arcade machine for $2,000. I know it's expensive, but you can also connect your console to it, so you could play your console games on a stand-up machine.
Review the Atari 7800 version :D
Awesome video 5*
WAOH! old memories
yea they made nice conversion for nes
why have you changed the channels name to "Lord Karnage"?
he didnt mention smash tv about the move one way and shoot the other
Not a bad port for it's time.Though i did enjoy it alot more then part two.I got nothing to say on ikari warriors 3 i never played it.
Now if snkp could just put the arcade version of ikari warriors in a collection ~_^
I had this on C64 back in the day, fucking loved it but it was crazy hard.
Man that Nintendo game is in mint condition. You must buy your games online.
ah nice reveiw i liked it
I could play this NES title a little while (definately better 2-p). I was able to beat Guerilla War with under $5.00 at the arcade back when. Now that I am almost 3x older, I need infinite lives for the free download from playstation store B^|
Poor man's Jackal / Top Gunner. Still cool.
