True Grit is a 1969 American western Technicolor film. It is the first film adaptation of Charles Portis' 1968 novel of the same name. The screenplay was written by Marguerite Roberts. The film was directed by Henry Hathaway and starred Kim Darby as Mattie Ross and John Wayne as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Wayne won his only Academy Award for his performance in this film and reprised his role as Cogburn in the 1975 sequel Rooster Cogburn. Historians believe Rooster was based on Deputy U.S. Marshal Heck Thomas, who brought in some of the toughest outlaws. The cast also features Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper and Strother Martin.
John Wayne won a Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Actor. Upon accepting his Oscar, Wayne said, "Wow! If I'd known that, I'd have put that patch on 35 years earlier." The title song, by composer Elmer Bernstein and lyricist Don Black, and sung by Glen Campbell, who co-starred in the movie, received nominations for both the Academy Award for Best Song and the Golden Globe.
Glen Travis Campbell (born April 22, 1936) is an American rock and country music singer, guitarist, songwriter, television host, and occasional actor. He is best known for a series of hits in the 1960s and 1970s, and for hosting a music and comedy variety show called The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS television from January 1969 through June 1972.
During his 50 years in show business, Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and accumulated 12 RIAA Gold albums, four Platinum albums and one Double-platinum album. He has placed a total of 80 different songs on either the Billboard Country Chart, Billboard Hot 100, or the Adult Contemporary Chart, of which 29 made the top 10 and of which nine reached number one on at least one of those charts. Campbell's hits include his recordings of John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind"; Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston"; Larry Weiss's "Rhinestone Cowboy"; and Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights".
Campbell made history in 1967 by winning four Grammys total, in the country and pop categories.[2] For "Gentle on My Mind", he received two awards in country and western, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" did the same in pop. Three of his early hits later won Grammy Hall of Fame Awards (2000, 2004, 2008), while Campbell himself won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He owns trophies for Male Vocalist of the Year from both the Country Music Association (CMA) and the Academy of Country Music (ACM), and took the CMA's top award as 1968 Entertainer of the Year. In 1969, actor John Wayne picked Campbell to play alongside him in the film True Grit, which gave Campbell a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. Campbell sang the title song which was nominated for an Academy Award.
    Alzheimer's diagnosis...
In June 2011, Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease six months earlier. According to his family, symptoms of the disease had been occurring for years, becoming more and more evident as the years progressed.
Campbell went on a final "Goodbye Tour", with three of his children joining him in his backup band; his final show was on November 30, 2012, in Napa, California.[During the tour's concerts and rehearsals, Campbell would often forget which songs he was supposed to play, repeating them after finishing a performance. He also frequently had to be reminded that he did have the disease, and relied on a teleprompter to remember the lyrics to most songs. Newer songs from his later albums had to be scrapped altogether, as Campbell struggled to remember the chords and lyrics for these. He performed "Rhinestone Cowboy" as a goodbye at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony held on February 12, 2012, his final televised on-stage performance.
In April 2014, news reports indicated that Campbell had become a patient at an Alzheimer's long-term care and treatment facility. On March 10, 2015, NBC News reported that Campbell could no longer speak for himself and that two of his children, Debby and Travis, had sought legal action against Campbell's wife Kim, with the assertion that she had "secluded" the singer and prevented them from "participating" in Campbell's medical care.
On March 8, 2016, the Rolling Stone reported that Campbell was living in a Nashville memory care facility and that he was in the "final stages" of his disease. He is now unable to communicate with other people and no longer understands what other people are saying to him. However, his family did assert that the singer was receiving good care receiving "music therapy" and was "happy" and "cheerful."

John Wayne starred in the best American western film EVER made, The Searchers (1956)... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years...100_Movies_(10th_Anniversary_Edition) His performance was astounding and he should have received an Academy Award for best actor.
The AFI currently ranks The Searchers, directed by John Ford, at #12 in its list of 100 best American films. He also directed "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), which the AFI ranks at #23.. The Coen Brothers have NO movies in the top 100 and will be forgotten 50 years from now. Ford and Wayne will not. There are NO great directors anymore. Where are the Speilbergs, the Hitchcocks, the Kubricks, the Wilders, the Capras, the Coppolas, the Scorsesses, etc etc etc. The answer is very easy... There are none.

I saw Glen Campbell during his farewell tour after it was announced he had Alzheimer’s. I did not expect much, but he put on an absolutely outstanding performance. His singing voice seemed as good as ever, and he took a few minutes between songs to talk about making True Grit with the Duke. His self-deprecating comments about his acting were funny, but in reality I think he did a pretty good job in the picture considering he really had no prior acting experience. Many Hollywood insiders resented his getting the role which “took a job away” from an established actor who otherwise would have gotten the part, and most critics-many of whom were in bed with the “Hollywood elite”-unfairly pilloried his performance.

John Wayne is not "laughably bad".
Anyone who could say that is a laughably predictable John Wayne hater.
The Duke's work in True Grit is natural, new and refreshing. He obviously enjoyed tremendously playing the part of the anti-hero.
For example Bridges threw away lines carelessly. His dialogue regarding his former marriage or talking about his son
or speaking about his famous gun battle were all delivered as he rode his horse. Drunken ravings as casually tossed away as a McDonald's wrapping. Bridges chose this method of delivery perhaps to achieve a form of realism.
Duke Wayne, on the other hand, delivered these lines eye to eye with Kim Darby. He fully embellished them with all the experience, time and life of a long lived old actor.
    He deserved that Oscar.
I will never say that Wayne was a versatile performer, but he made the most of his limited talents. He parlayed them into the most memorable actors in Hollywood.

Believe it or not, this dialogue, and actually almost all of the dialogue in both the original and the remake are taken mostly straight from the novel, sometimes just with a few different words. It is a baffling disappointment that the Coen brothers chose to skip much of the dialogue in favor of what I assume was getting the posse into the territory faster, which is, uh, not very Coen like. This is a fine studio era western, it truly is and I want that to be clear before I go on.
But upon seeing the Coen's film, and thus being prompted to read the book, the tone of this movie misses a key theme the book and the Coen picture unmistakably has. The title 'True Grit', when seen through the lens of the 1969 film, is absolutely in regards to Rooster Cogburn. But the 2010 film and book both make it abundantly clear that 'True Grit' also encapsulates La Boeuf and Mattie as well as Cogburn, and that Mattie is cut from the exact same kind of cloth as the two men.
Mattie in the '69 picture is a classic feminine character from studio Hollywood. She is certainly not spineless, but shes 'perfect'. She's beautiful, feminine, and her achievements are eclipsed by and awarded to Cogburn when he lands the killing blow on Chaney. Beyond that, the loss of Mattie's arm and her life lived alone mirrors Cogburn's loneliness and lost eye, rather than her simply adopting him as a kind of surrogate father.
I don't hate the '69 True Grit. Quite in fact I love it and owned it on DVD before the Coens even announced their remake. But despite 95% of the script being extremely similar to the original film, I wept throughout the '10 True Grit, because its tone and characterizations perfectly captured the cost Mattie was to take on by achieving this vengeance for her father.
Side note: No, John Wayne was not laughably bad. Ever. You just aren't accustomed to studio era Hollywood.

@@carywest9256 The original movie adaptation, owing to John Wayne's bloated ego thinks the movie is about John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn. The book and the 2010 adaptation both have Mattie as the central figure in the narrative.

@alexyoon-sungcucina7895 I'll never understand the deitification of John Wayne. He never really 'acted', he was just John Wayne in all of his movies...even while playing Genghis Khan...
Maybe I dont see it because I didn't grow up with it or enjoy the nostalgia...but I've always enjoyed westerns, and have seen a handful of his flicks and his characters are indistinguishable. And I'm a Glen Campbell mark....love his music.
But I would take Bridges and Damon's performance over Campbell and Wayne, it's not even close.

I think the Coen's film could be named Grit. The True part is added because it isn't necessarily abundantly clear, like a girl and a rhinestone cowboy.

Wayne says "If ya did that I'd kill ya" in such a flat, matter of fact tone that it leaves no doubt he'd follow through if he had to. Also, just imagine if Rooster could be a guest star on "Walker, Texas Ranger," with the way he keeps putting down Texans and Rangers all through the film!

The style of acting people expected in those days was different than today - you'll notice that even when Wayne's yelling and being his most intimidating, he still sounds like he's reading off cue cards or from rote memorization. People expected that and it didn't bother them. Glen Campbell wasn't any worse.

Saying great movies can't be improved upon is ridiculous. The first adaptation of Portis' novel was not perfect. In fact, it had a massive flaw- It thought John Wayne was the main character of Portis' novel. The 2010 adaptation corrected that massive mistake.

Wikipedia says that Kim Darby was born in 1947 , and was still 21 years old when filming True Grit in 1969 . Apparently , she had an amphetamine addiction that adversely affected her career . I think that she has had a difficult life , as she has been married 3-4 times . However , she is still alive as of January 6,2020 and works at UCLA . ( If she had just given birth , it is possible that she was suffering from Post Partum Depression . )

Wayne is great, his co-stars were kind of weak, Kim Darby does not have the sand to portray Mattie and Glen Campbell is just not a good film actor, if these two roles had been cast differently this would have been a much better picture
