For those wondering what the heck the schedule even is around here anymore there'll be an update video next week with info on .hack, BN Post Games and other stuff!
When you discuss BN6 post game will you also discuss the real world battle chips from throughout the latter trilogy and 6 in particular the ability to access Link Navis in PVP mode, and 3 special characters you cannot access in any other method (Beastless Megaman, Permanent Beast Megaman and Protoman) a feature sadly not replicated in the legacy collections.
Webfoot had to start somewhere...even if they're first game was gonna get hated. Hope we get to see reviews for Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury in later Reviews!
There's a romhack that fixes a lot of the game's issues. It doesn't turn the game into anything close to a masterpiece mind you, but it is, at the very least, significantly more playable. The romhack is titled, fittingly, "The Legacy of Not Dying to Wolves".
Fun fact about this game, bought it, beat it on the same day while at my sisters house, my dad wasn't happy about that so he took it back and got me another game called Mega Man:Battle Network, so this game got me interested in Battle Network!
Totally different anime game and system but I beat the Shaman King PS2 game in like, 2 hours, not even and I should've taken that back the next day. no I am not still salty after over 17 or so years what are you looking at me like that for
wait you beat this game on the same day you got it? what are you a speedrunner? also nice you traded a bad game for a good game at least there's a happy story to it
Im surprised you didn't even mention the flight invincibility glitch. If you get hit with a ki blast mid flight, you enter a glitched state where you are grounded but the game thinks you are flying. This means you cannot take damage, and can cheese every boss.
In my brief time emulating this game, the invincibility glitch for me is placing myself at just the correct angle from my opponent where the AI forgets to fight as I punch them repeatedly. It's cute the first few times, but then you realize that this is the entire goddamn game and a sense of "Why am I even doing this?" sets in
>Game is Goku only >Game covers the Saiyan and Namek sagas >Goku is absent for the majority of both stories “How did you know about the parts you weren’t there for?”
Given the quality of the DBZ games from Webfoot that came after, this game in particular screams "we didn't have the time needed to actually make this game, and shipped out the bare minimum skeleton we cobbled together in time."
If I recall correctly, they were also responsible for Taiketsu? So if anything, they're just never given enough time/money to make a decent game. Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's Fury both turned out significantly better because they could simply build on top of what they already had. If anything, it's kinda sad, they could have probably pulled off a lot with Dragon Ball if they were.
I'd argue it was also due to lack of experience, they had like..4 games at the time? And those were Pacman/frogger games IIRC, a bit different from an action RPG DBZ game
stop... just stop trying to give this game a w. aknowleding it the greates achievement it will get. just let it rest and let its succesors carry the flag
Power scaling, especially in a battle focused series like Dragon Ball, is still an important narrative tool. Obviously not to the physics derived or exact number based precision that a lot of debaters want it to be for their cross-series mayhem, but it is a system that shows you which character can do what at a given time. For example, why didn't Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, Kami, Chi-chi, and Roshi just turbo-jump Piccolo Jr at the end of the 23rd World Tournament? Because he would easy stir-fry them into a $30 platter in half a second if they did. Going by this game's logic, in all its weird pseudo-progression glory, a f*cking _pack of wolves_ could have crawled out from the forest and mauled Raditz in 5 minutes flat. Boom, end of the Saiyan Saga (Nappa and Vegeta don't learn about the Dragon Balls, so they don't bother coming over). I get that "lmao power levels" is a joke and all, but it's been over twenty years of it nonstop, to the point people are now interpreting it less as "lol [shounen author] is bad at power progression" and more as "you shouldn't care about _power_ scaling in a series centered around building up and displaying _power."_
6:40 LMAO Bulma's png mugshot is of her in her Buu arc outfit! It has her earrings, hair and yellow scarf! So in-game it's supposed to be her in the Saiyan arc, her model is from Namek arc, and her profile pic is from Buu this game really is a mess LOL
6:42 I've played this game off and on for YEARS now and only JUST NOW noticed that, not only is bulma in her Namek Saga outfit in her sprite work, but her character portrait seems to be from her BUU SAGA outfit upon closer inspection!
I was going to say I loved this game as a kid, very quickly I realized I must have played the sequel. Thank God I did, I'm pretty sure my 10 year old brain would have exploded trying to understand why those hit boxes are just completely non functional.
Besides being incredibly funny, well edited and just a pretty good video all around, I'm glad I decided to watch this cuz now I have a new youtuber with a ton of videos I can watch. Seriously, I've been watching all of your Mega Man videos and I just can't get enough of your commentary. I really hope you cover Legacy of Goku 2 and get like a billion subs cuz you really deserve them!
I remember a dev saying the hit boxes are not bad, they legit flash on and off as they were to time crunched to code dodging. Speed runs know the timing to land hits, if anything you need to look up speed runs and breakdowns on the game, and it gets far more weird.
To this day I have no idea how I beat this game legit as a kid. I don't even remember using the Solar Flare that much. Also, this might be the funniest teardown of this game I've seen which is impressive given the snark it tends to get. Thanks for the laughs xD
Oh man I really loved this video. Hearing the intro music to the gba game really took me back to the first time I watched that as a kid and it blew my mind. Already subscribed and liked the video immediately. I am READY for you to play the rest lol
It's a miracle I got into Dragon Ball at all, considering my first exposure to the series was this game, Goku swallowing the 4 star ball while watching tv with my babysitter's older kids, and like half an episode of the first season of abridged. At least later I got to read the manga and play Budokai 2.
I don't think there is a single person in this world that liked this game even as a kid, this game was so hated at my school that bullies became friends with some of the nerds just because of their mutual hate for this game, and unfortunately as Dragon Ball fans when kids asked for Dragon Ball games, this was basically the game that most parents got for their kids because a lot of parents didn't do the research to find out what games were good and stuff. Fortunately because I didn't own a GBA my parents never bought this game for me, and I only played it second hand from borrowing a friend's GBA or something, and then later in life through emulation, and the only way to make this game actually feel playable, was through the use of some cheats to give you infinite Ki and infinite flight, because then you could actually do stuff without it feeling so tedious since you could just fly everywhere, and with infinite Ki you could actually use your attacks to cheese most fights. I really wish that they had changed the name for Legacy of Goku 2 though, because after the first game was so bad a lot of people complete skipped on the second one, because of the reputation that the first game had, and this made a lot of people miss out on having a good time with the sequel, which is why I am glad that Buu's fury didn't have the Legacy of Goku title, but the damage had been done and nobody really trusted the other GBA Dragon Ball games after Legacy of Goku 1, so a lot of people missed out on Legacy 2 and Buu's Fury and even Supersonic warriors, which is a shame as all those games are pretty fun, but that is what happens when a bad game gets pushed to market most likely because of time constraints and stuff, and developers needing to meet deadlines and crap.
I only ever played Legacy of Goku 1 as a kid and I have to say, even as a child, I found this game obscenely disappointing. Shame I never go to try the two sequels that were apparently a lot better.
Also, keep in mind for those of us who grew up in the OG years. You had to WAIT for the bars and resources to refill. On a device powered by AA batteries. And I believe this was before the SP came out where you could play plugged in. This game was hard and a life stealer.
You sir have gained a new subscriber in less than 3 minutes into the video. I hated this game with all of my heart as a kid. 😂 the other Legacy games have days taken away from life. 🤝🏾
The best way to experience this game is by putting in the invincibility code at the start of the game. Insane to think that I actually played this multiple times as a kid. LoG2 and Buu’s Fury make up for its existence. Another banger video btw👌🏾
Had to check the date on this when it showed up in my feed. Been watching a ton of Dragon Ball videos lately, including Legacy of Goku ones. It blended in so well I thought it must've been an older video, haha!
I played Buu’s Fury a couple years back, definitely not the most remarkable game I’ve played, but there’s a charm to it that I got attached to. I never played this, only seen it. But I’ve never seen a game so fundamentally broken, with a character like Goku so *UNCHARACTERISTICALLY WEAK* that you need to actually fight defenseless Squirrels to level up in the early game.
i remember getting stuck in the namek temple as a kid a lot. it wasnt really easy to figure out you could walk through walls, so one of the artifacts took me a long time to fine. still, so many good memories from this game such as saving just before you die so you keep the exp you gained and just respawn with it.
My strategy (If you can even call it a strategy) is to just completely abuse to fly invincibility glitch. Is it cheap? Yes. But so are the enemies so they had it comin.
It's so crazy when you see this game and the sequels, and the quality disparity.. I will say, this game seems a lot more like original Legend of Zelda than A Link to the Past, regarding stiff movement and attacks, though that game still had more accommodating enemies and you could actually, you know, HIT THINGS.
God I remember playing this as a kid around 2006, my cousin was a huge fan of Dragon Ball Z and we literally made a joint effort to beat the game back then due to how hard the game was, seeing this video brought back a lot of memories of my childhood.
14:27 Because this game was very well made, you can actually fly into the dinosaur skeleton and get the Solar Flare as soon as you enter this guy's house, without needing to complete any of the sidequests, it makes things like getting the pterodactyl egg and getting past the T-rex a bit easier, or just getting around the wolves in the village, this was something I discovered by accident as a kid and I'll never forget as a result 19:01 There ARE enemies... but they're exact copies of the spirits you're looking for with literally no way to distinguish the two of them besides being able to talk to the ones that don't kill you 23:08 The way Ki seems to work in this game is that even though the bar functionally remains the same with no difference, your Ki attacks do more damage the higher the number in the pause menu is, which increases every time you level up, giving the illusion of using "more Ki" for your attacks despite nothing visually changing in how the bar appears to the player. You can also see differences in strength when leveling up, the most visible way to see this is using the debug menu to fight Frieza at level 1 and needing to punch him for up to *40 minutes or more* (assuming you're using the invincibility glitch to keep him from fighting back) compared to the much shorter time it would take if you were playing the game normally to get past his first form I'm actually surprised that HP works the way that it does because the other 3 stats in the game (strength, Ki, and speed) all work as intended
The legacy of Goku games are a good example of why you shouldn't let your failures hold you back Learn from your mistakes Cause each game builds on the prior game. Side-note: While I understand (and somewhat agree) the fatigue regarding raditz to boo.... I'd love it a legacy of goku game that covers the entirerity of Dragon Ball Z would be made.
oh I would love a video about them sequels. My experience with this game was mainly seeing the game over art and wondering where that particular render of goku with angel wings is from
Yeah I disagree with the "There is no value" statement because if anything, bluntly, the fact that these people made this game is a good reminder that you can, in fact, massively improve on your work even when you put out something bad and it's no reason you shouldn't just fuckin' go for it sometimes. The little bits of skill you learn while doing the thing badly are gonna be worth it to make something you're proud of. Yeah, you're gonna get pointed and laughed at, but if you keep working on it those are gonna turn into "Be careful of who you made fun of in high school" jokes with time.
LEGACY OF GOKU MENTIONED RAAAAAAH 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥 I LOVE LISTENING TO EXTREMELY BIT CRUNCHED SCREAMING OF KAMEHAMEHA WHILE EXPOSING MYSELF TO BEING HIT OUT OF IT❗️❗️❗️

Ooh maybe even a remake of his Twisted Metal reviews or even more weird Dreamcast ga- KNIJohn: *Releases Legacy of Goku Review* Me: ...Never in my life have I needed something so much and never known until I received it.
John covering Legacy of Goku?! This is genuinely unexpected but a welcome one! I have nostalgic sentiments playing this game on the emulator back when I was a little kid.
7:16 I can confirm that this game was my introduction to Dragon Ball lol. Luckily I at least had the dual cartridge, so I just skipped straight to the sequel.
That was legit a good game. It tackled the Piccolo battle at the tournament, Goku and Chi-Chi saving the Ox King, and stuff leading up to Raditz. Apparently they were going to offer dub sounds but forgot about them.
I’m both delighted and surprised! GBA supremacy baby! It’s also crazy to think that we’ve gotten good games like Kakarot and soon Sparking Zero. But the breakers unfortunately exists
Holy crap after all these years I only now, thanks to this vid realize that the spheres that you get for flying points have a wing in the design. I always thought they were weird fruits or something 🤣🤣
It's worth mentioning that leveling up DOES increase your damage output but it's obviously not noticible playing the game normally since the game just gives you all the exp you need. If you use glitches to skip bosses or just cheat to the end and fight Frieza underleveled, you will discover that he takes forever to kill. There is a glitch that lets you permanently lock bosses into Solar Flare stun and he still takes several minutes of mashing the attack button because your damage output is so low.
I remember the TV ad for this with that joke disclaimer the narrator rattled off at the end. Something about being a "very fun game" that has every food you could want "except maybe pizza" and the devs not being responsible "if the player's hair changes to Goku Yellow?"
Yeah... I remember borrowing this from a friend back in the day. Same experience. Emulated the other 2 years later and those were amazing by comparison.
I played this after having played through Legacy of Goku II several times as a little kid, and it gave me whiplash. I only beat it through cheese and sheer determination because I just wanted to experience more Dragonball through whatever means I could get my hands on. I love II and Buu’s Fury though, they had an amazing redemption arc, with Buu’s Fury probably being one of my most played GBA games.
Your attack power is invisible and you do get stronger as you train and level up, but it's hard to tell because of the hit box system. There's an audio cue signifying if you landed a real hit or not. This applies for all attacks. Weak sounds indicate blocked damage, strong sounds indicates inflicted damage. The problem is that there's a cool down time that last for about 3 seconds before you or the CPU can land inflicted damage again. This is why the solar flare comes in handy because it helps you avoid the enemy as you wait for your cool down to wear off. Unfortunately there's no in game tutorial that explains the combat system at all.
7:16 I'm one of those few (furthest I got was the third screen with the dinosaur) My second was Taiketsu. Thankfully my third one was DBZ Kai and I actually like Dragon Ball now
I love doing the flight glitch 😂 I remember finding out about the glitch in a Nintendo Power Magazine. That made the rest of the game a breeze. Until the stupid gem puzzle on Namek.
I remember this being one of the first roms I ever downloaded. I got my ass handed to me so much that I thought I had a bad file or BIOS. Glad to finally know that the game itself is just rough
As somebody who played the game in its entierty via emulatuon some years ago, I can con firm that it was quite bad. The namek temple got a bit confusing for me (I even think that I had to restart the game from the beginning being like "am I softlocked or something?", but I'm not sure), then I saw a walkthrough and discovered you needed to follow some of the finger pointing statues. Joke's on ke to have not payed enough attention to the texts in the temple itself. I should really try to complete Legacy of Goku 2 one of those days. Like, I played a lot of it, but never got to the end.
I think attacks have caps on the % of damage you can take, cause when you level up (presumably above whatever level the enemies are designated as being) you start tanking their hits way better and can take them down in far fewer hits. I think stats aren't really just stats so much as percentages based on your level compared to your opponent or something like that. They probably did this on purpose for players who do input those codes to skip to later levels. I'd be curious to compare the damage you do when you minimally level up and survive just using the invincibility glitch. I'm pretty sure I tried this once and got one shot by a ki blast from Raditz, so I think these things do matter, though the numbers are probably fake. Also, the flight gague increases with levels, for the most part. It caps at 99 and increases more and more per level. One thing I really like about this series is that the first game caps at level 25, 2 caps at 50, and then 3 caps at 200 (though I wish it capped at 100 to maintain level caps doubling the previous game) but since you get most characters above level 70 of so, I get it. Though I also don't particularly like starting that high and going so ridiculously high, or choosing stat distributions myself, even if it can lead to more unique replay value. But 3 didn't need that much since it's such a long game anyhow and a lot of characters will end up all feeling basically the same cause you have 3 stats and 5 characters, so it's not like you can make them all super specialized to be that different from each other
For those wondering what the heck the schedule even is around here anymore there'll be an update video next week with info on .hack, BN Post Games and other stuff!

LoG2 and Buu’s Fury make up for its existence. Another banger video btw👌🏾
Let's goooo! Legacy of Goku 2 and Buu's fury! Can't wait to see those
Had to check the date on this when it showed up in my feed.
3:37 should criticize a bad 20 yr old game from developers that learnt their lessons? You already reviewed Battle Network 1
i remember getting stuck in the namek temple as a kid a lot. it wasnt really easy to figure out you could walk through walls, so one of the artifacts took me a long time to fine. still, so many good memories from this game such as saving just before you die so you keep the exp you gained and just respawn with it.
I did not expect you to play such a cursed game. Feels more detailed than the average dunking on it gets too.
9:22 Legacy of Goku 1 explained in one picture.
This was my first DBZ game on the gba and remember at age 7 having a hard time trying not to die from everything.
My strategy (If you can even call it a strategy) is to just completely abuse to fly invincibility glitch. Is it cheap? Yes. But so are the enemies so they had it comin.
Man this was the very First DBZ game i ever played. I now feel completely justify in thinking most DBZ games are going to be bad at first sight now.
DADDY JOHN IS BACK WITH CHALLENGERS FROM BUDOKAI 2 IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!
IM SCREAMING WITHOUT THE S! 😩
The thumbnail & video title are great 😂😂
Maaaaan I use to love this game as kid. Only until the far superior LOG2 came out lol. That game still holds up today. Hopefully you cover it
Yeah. This is a big sufferer of first game syndrome.
Great video. I'm glad mediacom could provide such a great turnaround.
14:27 Because this game was very well made, you can actually fly into the dinosaur skeleton and get the Solar Flare as soon as you enter this guy's house, without needing to complete any of the sidequests, it makes things like getting the pterodactyl egg and getting past the T-rex a bit easier, or just getting around the wolves in the village, this was something I discovered by accident as a kid and I'll never forget as a result
19:01 There ARE enemies... but they're exact copies of the spirits you're looking for with literally no way to distinguish the two of them besides being able to talk to the ones that don't kill you
23:08 The way Ki seems to work in this game is that even though the bar functionally remains the same with no difference, your Ki attacks do more damage the higher the number in the pause menu is, which increases every time you level up, giving the illusion of using "more Ki" for your attacks despite nothing visually changing in how the bar appears to the player. You can also see differences in strength when leveling up, the most visible way to see this is using the debug menu to fight Frieza at level 1 and needing to punch him for up to *40 minutes or more* (assuming you're using the invincibility glitch to keep him from fighting back) compared to the much shorter time it would take if you were playing the game normally to get past his first form
I'm actually surprised that HP works the way that it does because the other 3 stats in the game (strength, Ki, and speed) all work as intended
The legacy of Goku games are a good example of why you shouldn't let your failures hold you back
Learn from your mistakes
Cause each game builds on the prior game.
Side-note: While I understand (and somewhat agree) the fatigue regarding raditz to boo....
I'd love it a legacy of goku game that covers the entirerity of Dragon Ball Z would be made.
Dragon Ball z kakarot.
At this point John is just a GBA channel 😂
2:55 ah, my favorite ki technique, Flippo Offu
I just realized that the naughty magazines have Bulma and Chi-Chi's faces on them.
Which, um...
25:49 SO ALL THAT TREE PLANTING WAS A WASTE
oh I would love a video about them sequels. My experience with this game was mainly seeing the game over art and wondering where that particular render of goku with angel wings is from
Fucken finally!!!! Can’t wait till you cover legacy of goku 2 and buus fury
LEGACY OF GOKU MENTIONED RAAAAAAH 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥 I LOVE LISTENING TO EXTREMELY BIT CRUNCHED SCREAMING OF KAMEHAMEHA WHILE EXPOSING MYSELF TO BEING HIT OUT OF IT❗️❗️❗️
DOKKAN BATTLE MENTIONED CHAT!! WE ARE LAUNCHING A 24 KI SUPER WITH THIS ONE!!!!
Yeah definitely need you to cover the sequels, I still go back and play those for funsies every once in a while, they're genuinely terrific games
DBZ would've been a totally different anime if right after Raditz kidnapped Gohan Goku gets eaten by a wolf
Me: Man I love rewatching John's content over and over again. His opinions on Megaman, .hack, Twisted Metal, and everything in between are always a treat to listen to. I've just finished my, what HAS to be twentieth full loop of his content since his release of the Tron Bonne video, I wonder what he'll tackle next? Starforce 2? Legends 2? Ooh maybe even a remake of his Twisted Metal reviews or even more weird Dreamcast ga-
KNIJohn: *Releases Legacy of Goku Review*
Me: ...Never in my life have I needed something so much and never known until I received it.
Man, I would love if you tackled Attack of the Saiyans next, if only to see how another company adapts the first season of DBZ into an RPG.
Legacy of goku 2 is in the same realm of glowup as MMBN 1 to MMBN2, you must do a video on it.
Thisgame took me 3 days to beat: of which half of that was looking for the third orb BEHIND A SECRET WALL!
Thanks for the info!
7:16 I'm one of those few (furthest I got was the third screen with the dinosaur)
My second was Taiketsu.
Thankfully my third one was DBZ Kai and I actually like Dragon Ball now
I love doing the flight glitch 😂 I remember finding out about the glitch in a Nintendo Power Magazine. That made the rest of the game a breeze. Until the stupid gem puzzle on Namek.
KNIJohn being a dokkan fan was a pleasant surprise
Straight up, this game was so hard as a kid, I used an action replay.
When I grow up I wanna be just like KNIJohn, even though we're probably the same age give or take a year or two
I remember this being one of the first roms I ever downloaded. I got my ass handed to me so much that I thought I had a bad file or BIOS. Glad to finally know that the game itself is just rough
And that's exactly what I expected
Pretty good video
Ah another Kni John upload. This is life
Woooo another epic GBA review!! 10/10!
good video, I hope it's succeeding so the sequels get covered
The mystery isn't how this game was so bad, it's legit how they springboarded off this to make 2 absolutely stellar sequels
I can attest to the wolf death being the first death in the game that you will experience.
