New Year's Jiu-Jitsu Resolution: How to Apply Self-defense in EVERY Roll (Feat. Master Pedro Sauer)

  • If you haven't chosen your jiu-jitsu resolution for the New Year, this one's for you. When you hear the term "self-defense," you typically think of punch protection, distance management and multiple attackers, but the reality is these only encompass 10% of self-defense. Joined by special guest Master Pedro Sauer, Ryron and Rener discuss the secrets to the remaining 90%, and explain how "self-defense" can be applied in every roll, even when punches are absent. To increase your efficiency and maximize your jiu-jitsu lifespan, do your best to follow the advice in this video, even if the culture of your academy is conducive to the efficient approach.

    Although my sheer excitement about the discussion topic and jiu-jitsu often get the best of me, my New Year's resolution is to let people finish talking before I begin. Better "Self-defense/efficiency" in communication I suppose we could call it, so I can "roll" into my 90s.

      It's tough, when I'm really into a topic and something comes to mind that I feel is relevant, I want to get it out ASAP before I forget it haha! Good luck in your new year's resolution though, I really enjoy watching these videos even though I'm yet to start training, will be doing so very soon! My New Year's resolution is to become a Blue Belt by the end of the year! Respect to you and your family, from Wales.

    Since when is 40 old hahhhaaa? I still felt like a machine when I was 40 and a purple belt. Going on 52 now and I still feel great and on the mat 5-6 days a week. You have to train smart. Gripping and squeezing takes a lot of energy. Chokes take a lot energy too. Train smart for longevity on the mat. Thanks Rener, Ryron and Professor Sauer.

      how is your body holding up. did you have a lot of injuries throughout your career because of bjj

    • @hoppy760
      @hoppy760 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My body is holding up fine. I didn't have a lot of injuries. There were a few times when my knee swelled up with fluid or my foot was injured but nothing major that required any surgery. I had my knee drained once because it filled up with fluid but for any other minor injury I just took a few weeks off at the most, with one exception. When I first started I strained a rib. I took 6 months off for that injury. Since I've been an instructor (10 years at black belt now), I really can't stop due to these minor injuries, but to be honest I usually can just work around it. In jiu-jitsu there is always going to be something, whether it's a sore thumb or sore back. I don't really consider those injuries though. If my knee is sore I'll wear a knee pad. If my ear is sore I'll wear head gear (no cauliflower for me). If my fingers are sore I'll tape them up and not do any chokes (I prefer armlocks anyway). And make sure and warm up well and stretch out before hard rolling. Hope that helps.

    • @shanem8738
      @shanem8738 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am using more chokes these days because they are low energy. Or at least I think so be cause I get them from the back and mount, places I rest. Could you expand on the choke part specifically?

    I like the video and what Master Sauer said, and his concepts are gems.... I've been his blackbelt for almost 10yrs and have used this particular concept quite often. I can't stress enough the need for smart jiujitsu to be able to do it until I'm in my 80's.....

    last month i got silver in the de la riva cup and got to meet ricardo de la riva. i'm a physically weak white belt. i only won because of this exact concept. everyone at my gym thought i had the most boring fight. there were moments where i literally just stayed still and planned ahead while my opponents struggled and grunted. how i won my last fight:
    1. he got good grips and was either going to take me down or pull guard, i decided to fall down on my own so he wouldn't get points. we landed in half guard, which is really common and expected.
    2. for 1 minute i did nothing but lock down the half guard. i kind of tried a few things but he was 3 kg bigger and really strong so i just defended my elbows. no way for chokes and no leg locks for white belts, so that's easy.
    3. eventually he decided to unlock my lockdown with his free leg. that meant he was sacrificing his base. so i immediately pulled full guard by rolling him a little to free my bottom leg.
    4. full guard, i tried to set up arm bar or triangle, no way. super strong posture and base. so i decided to use both arms and pull on his neck, pretending i'm trying to break his posture. he posts both arms on my hips. i can't remove his arms for kimura either. super strong guy.
    5. i shift my hips sideways so his posting arm slips straight down to the mat. i go for a weak ass kimura there planning for a hip bump. it totally works cuz he's grabbing strong defending the kimura. points for me.
    6. i try a bunch of submissions but he can basically bench press me so i got rolled over. derp.
    7. in the scramble i go for a triangle. a weak ass one which he easily defends. but it was a set up for a bridge/push. too messy to get straight mount once he falls backwards. but i scramble to side mount. points for me.
    8. stay on my toes and pretend to go for arm locks but really just trying to hold him down. eventually he gets full guard on me. 5 minutes over. i win.
    after i explained what i was doing to my training buddies, they were like wow, we didn't even get that. it just looked boring as shit.

    Rener and Ryron....this is by far the most profound video of yours that I have watched. I'm am new to jiu-jitsu coming up on a year repping Gracie Barra. I love my jiu-jitsu family and plan on doing jiu-jitsu till God willing the age of your legendary grandfather. Even in my young jiu-jitsu life this message is something that has conficted me in my training. The importance of getting to the point making positions rather than "self defense" or "self preservation" at first was good for my ego and for my competitiveness but my technique lacked. The biggest change in my game came after starting to follow your videos and philosophies and mimicking the style and mindframes that yall display. My professor definitely pushes for the immediate escape which is ok and in my first tournament 6 months into training the art, I won gold at the Texas open. But....changing my game to mirror yours and "self defense", Ive avoided injury, increased my submission execution, and strengthen my defense tremendously. Making my opponent struggle to find openings has in a way opened up a buffet of openings for me. I knew these were yalls philosophies but to hear you touch on the subject has reinforced my beliefs in the true core or essence of what your Grandfather Grandmaster Helio Gracie was teaching. Daaaaang....this is so major!! Anyway I really appreciate what yall do and hope to cross training with yall off of my bucket list one day. Oss! Weak Side For Life!!

    thanks for talking about this important lesson in jiujitsu. personally, i practice japanese jiujitsu and there's a bjj class before ours, so i get to see a fair share of their training mentality. a lot of them are indeed going for the "machine gun" method, which is sadly not really the point of jiujitsu imho (i can understand how this is the way to go if you're practicing for competitions).
    however, still, i think everyone would be done a huge favor if they were explained in the beginning of their first class of jiujitsu what the true meaning of jiujitsu is, as what the characters (柔術) in japanese mean. it means something along the lines of "gentle techniques" and not the "machine gun techniques" or the "overpowering techniques". whenever i am allowed to teach when my sensei is absent, i always teach people to rely on technique first and when all fails, perhaps a bit more strength and speed might solve it, but always try technique first, because there can always be someone bigger and stronger than you, or in the case of the video, younger and faster than you. strength and speed might not save you then, but technique most likely will.

    • @waldomarek
      @waldomarek 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** it's just a different way to spell it, mate. whatever you call it in the rest of the world, it remains 柔術.

Anyone who tries to muscle up a rock will likely be exhausted before they reach the peak. Use bone structure to hold yourself as it takes very little energy.

    One of the best videos you guys have put out. I've been traning for a little over a year now because I found the Gracie Brakdowns. One problem I see with new people to Jiu Jitsu is, the person wants to learn moves and rush into using them. That tends to put you and your partner at risk of injury. By doing what you guys just said it could allow those same people to practice and use the patience to roll safely. I myself can tend to do that eager to learn and perfect a technique. I'm going to try to take this mindset and apply it next time I roll with someone. P.S I won the Gracie Platinum Elite DVD set from GA, this christmas. Thank you and your family for being so giving. I travel so much it's hard to train at times. The DVD set will allow me to train more and to enjoy Jiu Jitsu with my family.

    • @waldomarek
      @waldomarek 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +michael westfall lot of times new people don't "believe" in the technique either and in doing so believe that the only way to make it work they have to crank it hard, which results in an injured training partner :(

    • @ColoradoBengal
      @ColoradoBengal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +waldomarek Yes. I use the philosophy that to truly master a physical process, you need to be able to do it SLOWLY. Control, balance, precise fine motor skills. These things can often be "skipped" when rushing through a technique. I try to master my movements in a slow and controlled manner. Also, my instructor is big on obtaining position and maintaining control. You can apply pressure from there if the person is defending, but if you get the position, and you can hold control for 6, 8, or 10 seconds. You know you could have applied the submission several times in that window. Just let it go and move on. Catch and release. This is especially important if you are applying a technique against someone that may not have learned the defense yet.

    Prof. Sauer's technique for preserving strength reminds me a lot of efficient rock climbing, believe it or not. You're taught to climb with your bones, not your muscles. Hang with straight arms, lock in close, rest often, clinch rarely. And when that technique clicks, you can climb harder for a significantly longer period of time. Here the philosophy is the same: utilize your anatomy rather than fighting against it

Most of my injuries did not come from training at the gym. I come from a competition school, and I'm usually pretty careful about who my training partners are, and I try to be careful during my rolls. I'm beginning to think that there is something to what Rion is saying about longevity. As far as take downs go, take wrestling class.

      I didn't say it was wrong did i, there is no wrong just different strategy's (a time an place for all), U cant deny the fact that what makes life interesting is how we are all different and find are own paths, no religion, cult or martial art is above scrutiny. learning basic Gracie Combatives and attending a certified training center i can compare it with an open mind to far far older Grappling systems and other martial arts, in my unfortunate experience of having to protect myself on the street i can say that every sec counts when it hits the pavement, an personally for sport going hard is what its all about, generally it is a young mans game, i think Rickson said he has a bad spine from his playin off his back style, not too mention countless other fighters have twisted necks from applying triangles,(forgive the shitty comparison) its like sayin u should only fight Rope-a-Dope when its still a defensive style, there's also pressure fighting which in my humble experience is superior, i Dont subscribe to jiu jitsu propaganda or any other style for that matter, so with respect friend good luck in your endeavors and a Happy New Year to u!

    Good information. I very much agree. but what if i hold a side mount on the streets and wait patiently and then friends of the attacker starts joining in. Doesn't it make sense to also be able to finish him or get out of a more defensive situation quickly by initiating action.

    So funny. When I get side control and hold my teacher always warns me not to do it. This video is so different. I like it though. Seems more realistic (street oriented) than the sports mindframe

      No, bjj was developed in order to survive an attack from someone stronger than you. So older, weaker, injured people are the most benefited.

    I consider Marcelo Garcia the greatest competitive grappler of all time and consider him one of the true good guys of not only the grappling world but the sports world in general, but he is a good example of what these guys are warning us about. He has numerous championships and has made a good living for himself, but he openly professes and has mastered the practice of submission without position first. What I mean is going for submissions relentlessly without having control of his opponent first such as during scrambles. He obviously has been very successful with this type of approach, but how many people can keep up with the sort pace and intensity that he trains and practices with? I have a close relative that is a brown belt and has traveled to New York City to train with him on several occasions and he has told me that Marcelo has difficulty straightening out one of his elbows. Now this may have been an acute injury that he suffered some years back but it may very well be a chronic problem from his type of training. As I said before, he has been very successful and maybe he made the decision to "go for it" and subsequently make a nice life for himself and family, but I agree with these guys that a similar approach for the common person who practices jujitsu is ultimately the kiss of death for their career especially when they may be swamped with other responsibilities like a full time job and family. It goes without saying that I mean no disrespect to Garcia or his career but as a public figure who is so revered by everyone in the grappling world, it is fair game and very useful to make this point especially considering the vast amount of confusion over this specific issue in the jiu jitsu world.

    Beautifully put, as usual. But I have this nagging question. Have any of you three had to use Jiu-Jitsu in a street fight? Either to defend someone, or because you were directly attacked? Perhaps your confidence prevents it, but all the same, I'd really love to know.

      +Steeleprophet Contact lenses. But BJJ is great cause you can definitely train without your glasses on, just makes it harder to see the instructor when he is showing the techniques.

    These guys always act like 40 years old and over is the nail in the coffin. I can not exert as much energy over a long period of time as the younger members in my group but I am able to be just as tough and strong. Everyone over 40 is not weak and dried up

      Great for you! I expect to be in the same boat. I just turned 35 and the only real difference between now and age 18 is related to recovery time/soreness. I'm basically the same size and build but probably a step slower and without as much vertical jumping ability. I think they are speaking very broadly as seasoned teachers based on what they have seen.

      You know to be fair I am a new comer to Jiu Jitsu and I do not practice frequently where I have that day to day wear and tear on the joints. Earlier this year they made another video about when Jiu JItsu practitioners turn over 40. Basically they let the older practitioners know in a not so subtle way, that you are going to suck and get mopped up even if you have a black belt , you can expect a younger blue belt or purple belt to school you on the regular. I am wise enough to know that as you age you can't hang with younger people over long training periods, so maybe its time to practice with people around your age group. These guys are really very good gentlemen and I know they mean well. I am just a little annoyed because before I found Jiu Jitsu , I had tried to find other martial arts mainly Taekwondo ( sport variant) and Wrestling. Basically they had that '' Oh you want to learn this sport ? ( 38 at the time) We see how long this will last '' look on their faces. What happened to martial arts is for everyone. They claim to teach the self defense version of BJJ, self defense is for everyone at any age.
