Pedro Earned his Black Belt from Helio and Rickson in 1985. Long recognized for the superior technical efficiency of his jiu-jitsu, he then began his career as an instructor in 1986 when asked to teach with an organization known in Brazil as Corpo/Quatro (Body of Four) where he taught and continued his training under renowned jiu-jitsu instructors Alvaro Barreto (who is a red belt master under Helio Gracie).
After moving to Utah in December of 1990, he taught as one of only two non-Gracie black belts under the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy (run by Rorion and Royce Gracie). In October of 1996, he became an official representative Black Belt Instructor under the Rickson Gracie American Jiu-Jitsu Association.
Currently, Pedro resides in Virginia and is on the mat regularly at his HQ academy in Herndon, Virginia: One Spirit Martial Arts (OneSpiritMA.com). He also has several affiliated schools across the country, and he visits them on a regular basis to give intensive instruction to the students and instructors. He is one of the most highly sought after instructors in the U.S. (of any martial discipline) and has presented hundreds of public seminars around the nation.

Brandon Drennan Me too and I've had the good fortune of meeting Pedro when he was in town for a seminar. What a great guy and a true master of his art. His deep knowledge of technique and approach to teaching is incredible.

So many people in Jiu Jitsu are obsesed about winning.

Sport Jiu Jitsu is ruining the sport. Don't get me wrong, I love to compete. I usually compete in 5 or so tournaments a year. But at its roots Jiu Jitsu is a self defense art that was designed for a practitioner to stay calm under pressure and patiently subdue an attacker. Now it's about bum rushing in and trying to tap your opponent at a tournament to win either medals, money, or both. Sad to see how much the art has changed.

Yeah that is an epidemic in jiu jitsu schools. Where traditional martial arts problems are unrealistic training in modern combat and mcdojos, most jiu jitsu gyms are only training for the ring. It has a lot of potential when used in the streets! A lot of jiu jitsu schools dont teach the dirty techniques which will for sure defend them in a real fight! But jiu jitsu is the top 5 best martial arts for self defense!

@@GabrielUngacta it depends on the trainer, i learn the dirty tricks, 25 years ago, when i was doing tae kwon do, (after getting bullied in school), i went to the trainer, and we had "private" training sessions for weeks, to learn the dirty stuff, the shit you use on the street, not in competition.. With any sport there are rules, on the street there are non.. Trainers cant incorporated the dirty stuff in training (most of the time) cause youngsters will abuse this knowlage..

I am, but it's not a big deal if I lose either. However, I WILL make my opponent work his ass off if he/she wants to win.

I like this guy, but he is full of s when he talks about the gracies.. They changed rules to try and win, they jumped opponents off the mat in the dark with many against one when they lost..... Each to their own, but i dont and never will respect that family... I am glad i started my bjj career under another branch and get my belts under that branch...
