Discord as a base free service is already insanely free of traditional monetization. Considering there’s no 3rd party ads the free service is all you really need. I think this and the microtransactions shows the shift from pumping up the user base with a high-quality service to focusing on making that sweet, succulent money.

As the owner of a community server of over 10k, I’ve been working to get to partner for years, while a few communities similar to mine that are smaller have had it due to joining the program in its infancy, it really sucks that all my effort to get that badge, and changes I made to the server to make discord happier, have been wasted. Genuinely sad after all this :/ it’s a stupid badge, but had its perks and justified in my mind the hours and hours I put into making things worthy of discords seal of approval. Big rip
I don't really understand the "money" argument. Just remove the free nitro feature from partner program and make goals for application higher so less people will aply, so discord wouldn't need so much people to check applies.
It's not even the Nitro that costs them much, in fact, it doesn't cost them anything -- The employees to monitor those applications and monitor the partners themselves on top of the merch is what costs them.
As the creator of a server of 10,000, having been rejected 4 times, the removal of the partner program is both disappointing and relieving. The original goal of my server is to create the best possible community in the category, and to get partnered, they eventually made partner require linking social media, meaning it will literally make no difference how good or bad your server is, they just want outside traction. Now that it's removed, at least no one else will get it.
Felt, My community has grown as a 18+ SFW server for the last 2 years. managed to hit almost 4k members. Discord rejects my applications for Server Discovery because we are 18+. Even though they have 18+ discords that are NSFW. Makes no sense.

Yes, the closure of the affiliate program is a concrete blow to the motivation for the development of servers on the Discord platform. Because I would like to see some kind of bonuses and incentives from the platform for the fact that the server creators keep the audience on the platform. And so it turns out that we don’t get anything in discord and only give our time to create cool communities, although we can do this on other platforms.
Even though my server only has roughly 200 members in it in all honesty discord removing the partner program doesn’t really demotivate me, I mainly created the server for people to just find friends with common interests
As far as HypeSquad goes its served its purpose, in the early days, like you mentioned, was "to spread the word of discord" now (for better or worse) almost everyone that has used the internet as at least heard of it. HypeSquads mission is complete.
I’m a game developer, and setting up a server for my game. I’m a little shaken off by the Partner Programs removal, just because it’s more difficult to get into the Program than say, Discovery. If there can be 5 servers claiming to be the official one, and they’re all in Discovery, the partner program was the last way to tell which was real, and now it’s gone.
I never mnaged to get in even when trying to maintain a server. Since then I've just let it slide for the most part and have even less drive to "worry" about it now. Right now the only thing I use it for is the odd communication with a viewer, and ongoing communication with friends. That's about it.
I had it and was a partner from 10/2018 until 11/2021. Worked so hard to get it and was turned down so many times. 3 years with the badge. Had to step away for 6 months due to life and lost it. Would have had it back again but now its gone. I still kept most of the perks except the badge and the free Nitro. Really sucks that there are no longer requirements to keep it, that's how it was when I got in, you earned it and you kept it. I never cared about the merch, gave it to my kids. A virtual badge costs them nothing. Wish I got to keep it to remind of the work that went into creating a community starting in the summer of 2015 when most never even knew about Discord.

We do have own bots & an OC (Original Character) which represented the server but we still got rejected several times. I cared a lot about the quality of the server. We also have a very good structure. I never made the server for the possible Partner Perks that I "could" get. I originally started the community back in 2015 on Steam. But knowing that Discord doesn't offer that support anymore is like some kick in the face because it was in my plan-to-achieve-list.

It would also take alot of the fun out of the server since I would need to moderate it much more harshly to get accepted.

As a partnered community owner, one of the biggest benefits of the partner program was getting to speak with all of the new people, and supporting each other. It's truly a shame. 😔
That engagement requirement caused so much stress that I had to let go of my partnership for my own sanity sucks that their getting rid of the requirement now. My server was one of the first partners and currently sits at 50k. Without the partner program I'll probably be migrating my community off of discord as more then likely they'll be making decisions that won't be good for servers long term.

Answering last question, yes. I was a mod at a server we were trying to get partnered to show we really are a good server, but now that its gone, it kinda demotivates us and makes our work seem almost pointless. Of course the server wasnt made just to get it partnered, but still, with the partner program being gone theres almost no chance to make a good server stand out since there are *anarchy* servers that are somehow discoverable where there is chaos and even the staff saying the n word.
I'm similar though I haven't actually made the server public yet (I'm an indie developer who on one of my community establishment goals was get discord partnered(recognition from discord of my community and my work is how I perceive the server badge)

This kinda pisses me off. I moderate a large band server and they paused applications in late 19/early 20, which was the only time the band whose sub I moderate has dropped an album, so we couldn’t use the literal 10x boost in traffic to apply to our partner application. The two times I applied were a year and a half after the album dropped and we were rejected despite their label promoting us on socials. I was just playing the waiting game.
I run a Discord server with a little over 300 members right now, based upon a fandom that hasn't been updated by the creator in the last few years (Specifically Deltarune, if you're curious), so I've been expecting a pretty large surge in the server's size for a WHILE now, so I'll admit, I *WAS* actually hoping to reach enough members to qualify for the Partner Program, one day... though it was never actually my end-game goal. *MY* personal goal has always been to reach enough members for server DISCOVERY, as I don't really care about any of the badges, or even free nitro... my goal is to simply create a friendly little, self sustaining community suited specifically to my own tastes (for example... almost NO swearing, and not even the SLIGHTEST remnant of NSFW in sight, along with a LOT of cooldowns and limitations on who can send gifs or images, as I'm not a fan of overly hyperactive chats)... I understand MOST Discord servers are pretty toxic and spammy communities, so I've always simply wanted a nice, CALM little place where there could be THOUSANDS of members, and the chat is still calm enough for ANYONE to easily keep up with. I've seen this done in servers of over 100,000 members, so I know for a FACT that it's possible... it's just getting the server advertised enough to actually GROW, that's been the issue. Nonetheless... you asked if I cared about the partnership program ending, to which I've thoroughly described by now... no need for me to continue rambling on about all the other little details. 😁
As someone that used to work for a Minecraft project with a 10k member Discord server which has been rejected for partner badge numerous times, this just feels shitty. Seemed like there was zero correlation for how and when they actually gave these badges out; and the Minecraft space proves it with how few servers actually have their Discords obtaining this badge even after meeting all requirements. It just goes to show that this entire partner system was never really a thing about "rewarding Discord users for creating and fostering a platform" and it was more so about giving 5$ hoodies to content creators and large media figures in exchange for them starting a server; because if you were not a MAJOR public figure, that also has a positive outlook on Discord (Sorry NNTS), you are not going to even be remotely considered for partnership. Honestly, the partner badge did not matter to most of us, because anyone with a large enough following to actually get the badge is probably making enough money off their Discord server and following outside of Discord that they couldn't care less about the "perks" of having it.
They do not actually send partner merch to every country a partner might be from. I worked as an admin for a content creator and managed his server to the point where he got partnered, but he didn't receive any merch (useless).

If I own a brand, then some of the partner perks will be important to me, like custom branding and invite links. If I don't own or work for such a brand, then I don'f feel anything about the partner program.
To be honest, I've had a pretty good Discord server up for about 3 years now. It is kind of a shame how I can no longer get the badge for how long my server is up, but at the same time if what you said was true and their running out of money that's understandable. And to be honest, I do agree with only wanting the badge if I got the partner program badge. Just because I already pay for nitro and I don't really care for the merch since there's a high chance I'm not doing to actually wear any of the clothing.
Discord might be running out of money, hopefully they will launch more merchandising stuff or nitro features before even putting ads everywhere in discord, or even worst, making you pay (cheaper for nitro users) for having a discord server

We bring a lot of people to Discord and I thought it would be useful for us to talk to Discord staff more deal with some people in our server but thats off the table now. Thank you Discord.
Personally, I never was interested in the Partner program, it seemed like a hassle to get in and remain a partner so it was never worth it. That said, I do find it demoralizing to make a Server and try to get it to be popular since there's no reason now. At least with the Partner program, you had some milestones you could maybe achieve one day but now? Now there's nothing for you to gain and just loads for Discord to gain.

Well, I was rejected about 5 to 7 times with a server dedicated to supporting online events with around 24k members and a daily average of 5k~6k members, while a server in the same style as mine, with half the metrics managed become a partner. Thats so fun.
Frankly, I don't run a Discord community just for the partnership. I want to have some place to post my YT videos and Twitch streams announcements where people can subscribe to the notifications easily and where people can engage. Partner program was never my end goal, but it would be nice to have it. Not anymore as it seems, but that doesn't deter me from continuing in bulding my community.
I don't really care about the Partner Program in and of itself, but seeing how Discord seems to care less and less about their users as time goes on _does_ make me wonder how long I'm still going to have any good reasons to use it

Reminds me of years ago when I was so excited to join hypesquad as soon as I was old enough to (i think the requirement at the time was 16?) and then of course that closed applications for a couple years. i'm a discord partner, and discord closing the partner program finally gave me the green flag to close my partnered server. my interest in discord has been sunsetting slowly as the years have gone on, and i was just thankful i don't have to maintain it anymore.

Both. They killed off nitro classic and lots of people stopped subscribing. The poor can’t afford the $10 nitro and a lot won’t buy it out of principal. Nitro basic is dog shit and nobody buys that. And discord not running ads means they aren’t making any more money outside of donations.
Honestly, the only thing that really affects me and my server(s) is the whole Disboard drama. How long does it take to get reviewed? Or is that not a thing anymore? I have a server that has been eligible for the partner program for a really long time, but it's not a unique server with a unique idea behind it. I really wanted to make it a partnered server, but I felt like it would get rejected considering what its about. (Also I decided to go on a break and touch some grass, so I made someone else owner until I got back, horrible idea because we had a strike against the server for whatever reason, and we lost the stupid discovery until I fixed the stupid strikes.) But yes, partner program has always been a goal in mind, but achieving it would be damn near impossible, so I just disregarded it.
Them disbanding the Partner Program has affected my server basically, I obviously cared to do something by filtering others (extremely) all for a silly badge, Rip the progress.

Big servers get tons of money from sponsors and such. I think thats a pretty good incentive.

ive been running a server for just under 2 years, and its currently around 3500 members- the partner program has always been a huge motivator for me, and it shutting down was a huge hit to my motivation. im honestly not sure what to do now because i really only wanted it because i cant afford nitro, and now that that isnt even an option i dont know wtf to do

This kinda pisses me off. I moderate a large band server and they paused applications in late 19/early 20, which was the only time the band whose sub I moderate has dropped an album, so we couldn’t use the literal 10x boost in traffic to apply to our partner application. The two times I applied were a year and a half after the album dropped and we were rejected despite their label promoting us on socials. I was just playing the waiting game.

I run a Discord server with a little over 300 members right now, based upon a fandom that hasn't been updated by the creator in the last few years (Specifically Deltarune, if you're curious), so I've been expecting a pretty large surge in the server's size for a WHILE now, so I'll admit, I *WAS* actually hoping to reach enough members to qualify for the Partner Program, one day... though it was never actually my end-game goal. *MY* personal goal has always been to reach enough members for server DISCOVERY, as I don't really care about any of the badges, or even free nitro... my goal is to simply create a friendly little, self sustaining community suited specifically to my own tastes (for example... almost NO swearing, and not even the SLIGHTEST remnant of NSFW in sight, along with a LOT of cooldowns and limitations on who can send gifs or images, as I'm not a fan of overly hyperactive chats)... I understand MOST Discord servers are pretty toxic and spammy communities, so I've always simply wanted a nice, CALM little place where there could be THOUSANDS of members, and the chat is still calm enough for ANYONE to easily keep up with. I've seen this done in servers of over 100,000 members, so I know for a FACT that it's possible... it's just getting the server advertised enough to actually GROW, that's been the issue.
Nonetheless... you asked if I cared about the partnership program ending, to which I've thoroughly described by now... no need for me to continue rambling on about all the other little details. 😁

As someone that used to work for a Minecraft project with a 10k member Discord server which has been rejected for partner badge numerous times, this just feels shitty.
Seemed like there was zero correlation for how and when they actually gave these badges out; and the Minecraft space proves it with how few servers actually have their Discords obtaining this badge even after meeting all requirements.
It just goes to show that this entire partner system was never really a thing about "rewarding Discord users for creating and fostering a platform" and it was more so about giving 5$ hoodies to content creators and large media figures in exchange for them starting a server; because if you were not a MAJOR public figure, that also has a positive outlook on Discord (Sorry NNTS), you are not going to even be remotely considered for partnership.
Honestly, the partner badge did not matter to most of us, because anyone with a large enough following to actually get the badge is probably making enough money off their Discord server and following outside of Discord that they couldn't care less about the "perks" of having it.
They do not actually send partner merch to every country a partner might be from. I worked as an admin for a content creator and managed his server to the point where he got partnered, but he didn't receive any merch (useless).

If I own a brand, then some of the partner perks will be important to me, like custom branding and invite links.
If I don't own or work for such a brand, then I don'f feel anything about the partner program.
To be honest, I've had a pretty good Discord server up for about 3 years now. It is kind of a shame how I can no longer get the badge for how long my server is up, but at the same time if what you said was true and their running out of money that's understandable. And to be honest, I do agree with only wanting the badge if I got the partner program badge. Just because I already pay for nitro and I don't really care for the merch since there's a high chance I'm not doing to actually wear any of the clothing.
Partnership has always been a fraud, that's why I chose instead to pay yearly 1k for benefits of one. Not even surprised they're removing it.
Discord might be running out of money, hopefully they will launch more merchandising stuff or nitro features before even putting ads everywhere in discord, or even worst, making you pay (cheaper for nitro users) for having a discord server
For my Discord server I was going to apply for the Partner program after they were unpaused (i thought they were going to be) but i guess not now. We bring a lot of people to Discord and I thought it would be useful for us to talk to Discord staff more deal with some people in our server but thats off the table now.

Personally, I never was interested in the Partner program, it seemed like a hassle to get in and remain a partner so it was never worth it.
That said, I do find it demoralizing to make a Server and try to get it to be popular since there's no reason now. At least with the Partner program, you had some milestones you could maybe achieve one day but now? Now there's nothing for you to gain and just loads for Discord to gain.

Well, I was rejected about 5 to 7 times with a server dedicated to supporting online events with around 24k members and a daily average of 5k~6k members, while a server in the same style as mine, with half the metrics managed become a partner.
Thats so fun.
Frankly, I don't run a Discord community just for the partnership. I want to have some place to post my YT videos and Twitch streams announcements where people can subscribe to the notifications easily and where people can engage. Partner program was never my end goal, but it would be nice to have it. Not anymore as it seems, but that doesn't deter me from continuing in bulding my community.

Man, the server I help run just hit the requirements for partner the week they stopped taking applications. Reminds me of years ago when I was so excited to join hypesquad as soon as I was old enough to (i think the requirement at the time was 16?) and then of course that closed applications for a couple years. Agony.
i'm a discord partner, and discord closing the partner program finally gave me the green flag to close my partnered server. my interest in discord has been sunsetting slowly as the years have gone on, and i was just thankful i don't have to maintain it anymore.

As a verified bot owner (300k+), and its support server of 25k+, they still denied me partner so not really demotivating as much as discord just doesnt care about bot devs

Both. They killed off nitro classic and lots of people stopped subscribing. The poor can’t afford the $10 nitro and a lot won’t buy it out of principal. Nitro basic is dog shit and nobody buys that. And discord not running ads means they aren’t making any more money outside of donations.

Honestly, the only thing that really affects me and my server(s) is the whole Disboard drama. How long does it take to get reviewed? Or is that not a thing anymore? Honestly, I haven't really been keeping up because of said stress that it makes of owning **one** server and still trying to keep up with friends.
discord removing the partner program really discourages me - what's the point of putting in all of this effort finding unique members and moderators when it's like there's no light at the end of the tunnel (the light being the badge & nitro perks)

People in this comment section doesn't understand it, they're saying how they wanted to apply and get partner verification after it's unpaused on their own server, but there's one very huge point they forgot about applying for partnership is that you will have an EXTREMELY low chance of actually getting accepted into the partnership program. Its near impossible.
I have a server that has been eligible for the partner program for a really long time, but it's not a unique server with a unique idea behind it. I really wanted to make it a partnered server, but I felt like it would get rejected considering what its about. (Also I decided to go on a break and touch some grass, so I made someone else owner until I got back, horrible idea because we had a strike against the server for whatever reason, and we lost the stupid discovery until I fixed the stupid strikes.)
But yes, partner program has always been a goal in mind, but achieving it would be damn near impossible, so I just disregarded it.
Them disbanding the Partner Program has affected my server basically, I obviously cared to do something by filtering others (extremely) all for a silly badge, Rip the progress.
I got a gaming discord server and it’s not very big. Main games we focus on is Trading Card Games, so the removal of these programs don’t really effect me/us.
No partner program? That ain't stopping me from growing a community.
