Big ups from a fellow Dyspraxic! It's so true that more people need to know about Dyspraxia - if knowledge about it was commonplace, we and all those we interact with would find it so much easier to deal with.

More people need to learn about dyspraxia, any time I told people I had it when they asked me why I was so bad at sports they would always respond with something along the lines of “just because your dyslexic dosnt mean you can’t do sports, stop being lazy” and when I explained that it’s different from dyslexia and what it is they said I made it up and it’s just an excuse. It doesn’t help that I’m autistic so I’m just generalised as the stupid lazy one. Schools need to teach this stuff more

I've never let Dyspraxia stop me. Playing sport people would 'abuse' me for dropping the ball etc. People get dyspraxia and dyslexia confused too much and I think that's what hurts the most.

When I told someone that I was dyspraxic. They said "Oh wow really? I have a friend who has dyslexia. They are the same thing right? Just different names?" This is why it needs to be way more represented.

It took doctors and my parents 15 years to realise that there was something different and I was diagnosed at 15 even though I was showing signs of Dyspraxia from a very young age. The thing is, I still don't know what it fully is but I'm learning and very happy to know that I'm not just clumsy and stupid (which is what I had been thinking for my whole life up until I got diagnosed)

i'm 18 and currently in the process of figuring out if i have dyspraxia. i've always learned motor skills later than others my age, and sports was hell on earth for me - but teachers never thought there was something wrong with me, simply because i had a talent to do well in school. nobody thought to notice that maybe the way i was always the slowest one in every situation may not be normal. there needs to be more awareness.

I'm 14 and I only got diagnosed recently. It's such a hard thing to deal with. I was dealing with something hard without even realising it. I was late to primary school everyday got picked last all the time for football, I only learned how to tie my laces when I was 12 and had only learned how to ride a bike at 11. I'm not sure if that's exactly late to others. I always thought I was a bit slower than others and I wish it had been recognised sooner so I could have known growing up when u was much younger and didn't feel so bad about myself. Really appreciate this video and I want to try and spread as much awareness as possible. ^-^

I’m 16 and honestly dyspraxia is a huge part of my personality, ive learnt to not be so hard on myself for being late and organised and honestly as cringey as it sounds, you’ve just got to try your best and if it doesn’t work out then don’t get frustrated. If other people get mad at you when you’re trying your best then it’s on them :)

I wasn't diagnosed with Dyspraxia until the age of 20, along with being extremely clumsy and unorganised i often found I would become very annoyed with myself on a day to day basis when trying to carry out simple tasks. even though i still suffer from all of the above discovering I had the condition has changed my life and i only wish i had found out sooner. This video was very inspiring and should be shown to all young people!

Hi Alannah even if I was diagnosed earlier it wasn't until I was older I understood what was happening. There still things that happen now which is clearly dyspraxia that shocks me. That's my main goal is to get the animation into schools to get awareness of the difficulties to everyone. I'm so happy with the results so far as long as I help at least one individual that's fantastic news.

Before I saw this video I felt like I was the only one to have this condition that never goes away, and after watching this video I feel that I can do whatever I want to do with my life and i can achieve it , thanks so much you have inspired me Annie

I've been diagnosed but knowing all about it, it makes much more sense. My school know and they don't help they just treat me like I'm worthless. If only more people knew about it then maybe they might stop bullying me. I'm going to share this on Facebook to get the news around. Mums been really helpful and supportive and I think she secretly always thought I had it but only searched for help when it got bad. This helped a lot, thanks!

+Holly smith Your very welcome. Its been a few years since I made this animation and my life has only improved I still find things difficult and I still surprise myself with odd things that happen because of my dyspraxia. But with a fantastic group of friends who understand that I have my quirks and they laugh with me not at me. School is by no way easy but its even more difficult with something like dyspraxia just don't let it stop you doing anything. Don't let anyone tell you that you cant do anything because they are in for a shock as dyspraxics are the most versatile people I know. Hope everything gets better for you Abi :)

For example, awareness and support in Wales is absent and appalling. People with Autism or Learning Disabilities get the short end of the stick and even get persecuted by society- I think.

I'm 16, and my mum's finally thinking of getting me tested, as I'm displaying almost all of the symptoms, and I also had them all throughout my childhood, and only recently my new college teacher brought it up at parents evening, and asked my parents to get me tested, that they finally agreed that something wasn't right. I'm feeling worried for the test, any pointers or any advice on what to expect?

I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia at a very young age, since I was a very young child and it does help being diagnosed because you can get extra help, which I very much need myself and although I don't get much support the support I do get does help a lot.

This is probably to late but when I was last tested I fell up the stairs and then they gave me a spinny chair I couldn't sit still and fidgeted like mad. If any one is worried about being tested it is easy they are used to it don't be ashamed and be honest it will help the diagnostic.

      @RaphaelKrausz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey Alexandra! How did it go?
FWIW, I'm 43 yo and have Dyspraxia (and ADHD). Dyspraxia doesn't stop me doing stuff in life ...
I cook, using ultra-sharp knives (safely) and can do most things others do - I type quicker than most... Practise, practise, practise the things you really want to do... start slowly and focus on precision rather than speed. Remember to enjoy what you are doing.
I may never be as fast as others, but I can still obtain a decent level of mastery of skills... I don't ride a skateboard, but I love to bike.... I can strut my groove-thing on the dance floor with friends... and there is no reason for you to be too worried.
I am really thankful to my parents for sending me to occupational therapy as a child and teenager. The worst part about it - was at 14 doing therapy with children much younger than me. Having said that - no-one else really knew and it helped my motor skills a lot.
Also, if like me you experience some dyscalculia (problems with numbers) - just remember that arithmetic is not all of maths - and you are old enough now to use a calculator in class without being chastised for it. There are probably areas of maths where you excel - for me, set and set theory I do great in as well as abstract thought and reasoning - and I work in IT, which is all maths - but I do it well, and without the same problems I had in school trying to memorise times tables.... (erk... I figured out my own work-arounds - and there are ways better than rote learning!)
Life has just given you a different set of challenges to others, but you are not alone - and /everyone/ has their own challenges in life.

Im Dyspraxic, and i was diagnosed in year 1. Ive been bullied in primary school for my disability (The Bullying consisted of: being bullied because i needed extra help in maths, i was given an ipad and a book to help and people said it was not needed, having my disability being called a disease, etc.) and now that i am in year 9 (i am 13) i have things i have never had since i was diagnosed, for example: drunk walking, being extra clumsy, stuttering over my words, constant anxiety and i am now also short-tempered.

Bravo from a fellow sufferer of dyspraxia. I apparently got diagnosed when I was a toddler. I also got diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the time. I don't really let them affect me per say, but a lot of the symptoms of dyspraxia make sense to me (my behaviour and how clumsy I've always been) when I found out that I had it. I only found out via my father as I was too young to remember being diagnosed.
It is a strange thing indeed. Mine seems to cause clumsiness and very sensitive senses (mainly hearing). Idk if that's what they call sensory overload or if I'm getting confused with something else. But, I digress. All the best to you.

I'd like to talk or listen to anyone who has or thinks they have dyspraxia. I was told by someone yesterday that I sound like I have the symptoms. I have told a few of my friends and my girlfriend and everyone has said - 'Oh my god....yes, you tick almost all of the boxes'. It really does explain so much in my life. Would love to talk with anyone who wants to talk about it

I really wish more people knew about it. Because I had never heard of it, I found out at last year at the age of 22 (weeks before I was to submit my dissertation). Very few people understand what it is, and I either get too much sympathy/ patronisation or get told I'm scapegoating. I can't even explain it. Really needs more awareness.

I have shared this video on my Facebook page.
I will be twenty six this year and still remember the first few of school when I was diagnosed. My parents kept getting calls about my behavior and that I was a problem child despite the fact that according to them at the time I wasn't having any such issues at home. Like you the main reason for this was the fact they thought I was bumping into people on purpose and deliberately tripping over to disrupt the class. Even to this day sadly the permanent report of me being an attention seeker still follows me wherever I go.
As I learn't just over five years ago at collledge. When our form teacher acidently left several student records (all of students with learning disabilites) on her desk for the class to see. Complete with photos. Thankfully I was with the others whos records they were and we found ( and read the ones with our names on). Which made her come back and tell us off for "reading personal imformation" (despite reading our own) and put them away where they should have been to begin with. In bold writing under my name it said "often attention seeks and will lie for attention. Should not be taken seriously". Oh how many stories I could tell that are actually true which looking back on it where most likely caused by that one instruction.
But anyway back to my earlier school years. It got so bad to the point that my parents had to fight for and demand that i be observed and checked to see if I had any learning problems. To put it bluntly because I was both full blown to the point it was that obvious and because the one who diagnosed me himself also had Dyspraxia spent at most three hours there. Five minutes to diagnose me and the rest of the time with my parents and the school head to try and work something out to help me. I didn't have the option of tablets as some do now back then and being a girl even after they supposedly agreed and both he and my parents left. They were still not fully convinced Because "Dyspraxia is a boys disease". I had to have physiotherapy for several years up until about the end of primary/ beginning my second school to help with my coordination and balance as well as muscle strength in the legs. So I could walk properly. I did get help at both this and my second school. But it wasn't until my final school ( the one you do your GCSE's and A levels at) that it was taken seriously.
There was even a time when I was made to clean up my own vomit then given an after school detention for causing a scene. After my now ex best friend or who I had thought as such back from when I first started school began to bully me because I was going to a different school from her. Almost suffocated me to death in the girls bathroom by pinning me onto my front on the floor with two other girls there helping her. Threatening to call both the police and my parents on me to "get me into trouble" triggering a severe asthma attack. Which I have now thankfully grown out of but not without weakened lungs. Not because of the phone call threat but because of the sheer pressure on my chest from having her on my back quiet literally. And the reason I got into trouble instead of them. Because it was the word of three against one and because I was "a Dyspraxic and should stop trying to get attention". The teachers words not mine.
Happily though I now have a job, a boyfriend who loves me and I am tying to currently learn Japanese as well as do karate. I plan to be an author in the future and will be entering the world cup for the karate group I go to (just for fun) this July. So no matter what people say or what those bullies do never give up. Because I personally never plan to stop learning.

I was diagnosed when I was very little with "minor" of the condition but think it's altered since then as when I was little I would trip over nothing and now I don;t do it anymore, I have a constant shake in my limbs particularly my hands so carrying groups of drinks on a tray is impossible (so much for a waiter career) Also what I've noticed in the last few years I get very agitated or offended easily and I blow it out of proportion like I painted a Picasso and someone claiming I did by smearing my turds onto the canvass when all they said would be something like maybe add shading here and there. When I look back at what I say to people especially my friends on Skype it looks like I caused a hurricane over nothing. I don't even think when I do it, it just happens.

On the plus side I seem to have done better than I ever have done before but I certainly need to start writing earlier if I am to do a Master Degree.

I’m 13 and dyspraxic, I was diagnosed in reception since my teachers son had it so she knew the signs, as I child I used to have to go to a clinic every Thursday to help with my coordination and ability to throw a ball. I couldn’t ride a bike until I was 9 and the only reason I could was because there was a special corse teaching dyspraxic kids how to, I’m in year 9 now and I struggle so much with time keeping and I can’t write at a normal speed because of my dyspraxia, I also have been shit at all things sport and coordination since I can remember when u was little they used to have a accident book at my nursery so they could tell your parents when you feel over or banged your head etc and I was in that book nearly every time I went. I am still clumsy and I trip over thin air and really anything but dyspraxia is hard to explain to a person who doesn’t have it and when people ask my why I have extra time and I say dyspraxia none has heard of it but everyone knows what dyslexia is and none knows when dyspraxia awareness day is because none even knows what dyspraxia is and I still struggle every day with dyspraxia, I think people should learn what it is and be made aware x

We run therapist training about sensory integration including the sensory integration and praxis test which is a standardised assessment often used by OT's, Physio's investigating if someone has dyspraxia. I have posted your two TH-cam's on my own therapy FB but also Sensory Integration Network's FB page, Thanks for making such a great movie for us to be able to show others… :). Im 14 years old and have never learned how to ride a bike, I just learned how to tie my shoes (using the most common method and not the two bunny ears) last year. I didn't walk for the longest time (I used to scoot on my back and pick things up with my feet). I have almost illegible handwriting (thats part of the dysgraphia though). I have never been organized in my entire life,I have almost no hand-eye coordination. I've never held the pencil the way everyone else does. And the list just goes on and on.

The next day she explained to the entire class what dispraxia was and how it made things like writing ten times harder. I remember that the way she showed it was that students had to put on oven mitts and try to do stuff, it was quite funny. After that they stopped and i feel like i'm not the only one that this (bullying) had happened to

Queen_Banji just find things that help I know that I cannot sit still or stand still for long periods of time so I take breaks or move about. When doing things for the first time I take it a lot slower then as I get use to it I get quicker. I use my hands to animate when I give directions as I point one way and say the other (normally the point is the right way). You just learn copping methods that suit you. Hope that helps ☺️

I have autism, and I think I have dyspraxia. It's strange to me that someone would bully a dyspraxic person, because balance typically comes so easy to NTs that they can't really explain how they just know how to walk normally. No one chooses to be uncoordinated, it's just the way our minds are.
Personally, it's hard to think of days where I didn't trip over or bump into something. My normal gait probably makes me look drunk to other people. I've rolled on my ankle so many times that I swear it's made of titanium. How I lived 23 years without breaking an ankle or a toe I will never know.
