McLaren seems to have endless "special" models. Today I'm providing my take on McLaren's special models, and I'm going to explain why I think McLaren has too many special cars -- and I'll explain why this is a problem.

Even though my girlfriend sees me as a living encyclopedia of cars, anytime I see a McLaren on the road I really struggle to name it.
Same, their naming scheme is ridiculous imo

These are not part of the "normal" 500 Sennas
Each cost anywhere from 1 000 000$ to 5 000 000$
And the 720s LM
I honestly lost count of the number of mclarens that came out after the 720s. The brand just feels like an annual fast and furious movie at this point.
Is there even a market for so many models ? I mean, even big names like BMW or Merc do not have so many sportcars in their lineup.

10 years ago Pagani said it would be making the LAST Zonda special... Last year they still released a new one... They literally only made two models (Zonda and Huayra) and milked the living SHIT out of them!!!. They still use the same cheap Mercedes twin turbo V12 that's 20 years old!!! Yes 20!!!
They overprice their cars into ridiculous levels and stupid millionaires still buy them even though they are paying millions for a different body panels on a 20 year old car!!
At least McLaren makes their own engines and the models are different and brand new technology!!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thinks this. It’s about time someone else mentions it to the public. McLaren is dropping the ball heavy.
They seem to be making a lot of weird mistakes on the business and marketing side of things.

They need to slow down a bit. On the past, it felt refreshing to see a new McLaren release, but now its just "have i seen this one or is it new?"
They keep making more and more types of cars just to hope to sell “better”.

The brand dealership might boycott him for the stuff he said. However, he will always find viewers who let him drive their “special” cars, sometimes in exchange for clout.

I legit cannot tell if a Mclaren is a 720, 650, GT, even Atura when I see one because Mclaren's naming strategy is awful.

She's always surprised at how I can just easily identify just about every car on the road... except the other day I was like, "oh, there's a McLaren. I have no idea which one, they all look kinda the same and they don't badge them"

except the Zonda is still very limited and special. these McLarens hit Bentley levels of depreciation and are basically smearing what makes supercars so unique and valuable.

The real Shame is Senna the man deserves a car that’s truly special
Well Senna the man actually had a hand in test driving and giving actual feedback during the development of the original NSX, which while not that fast, turned the supercar market on its head just like the OG Lexus LS400 turned the luxury car market on its head. It may only have like 260 hp, but the original NSX will always be a super special car.

This is perfect timing because yesterday we had a car show here in Orlando and me and the guys at work were having fun listing off the cars that passed by. We could pretty much name each model of Ferrari, Lambo or anything else but twice we saw two cars that were clearly McLaren but both times we were like "No idea which model because they all look too similar and there's too many"
Basically every McLaren is a concept car that is streel-legal. The opposite of every other manufacturer who builds lots of concept cars and never makes any of them for the street. I prefer McLaren's strategy.

Keep in mind, this is an incredibly tiny portion of "the car industry." Besides, hasn't this been an issue for some 100 years at this point?
Also, McLaren does make $150-200k cars; the problem is that they're not selling very well, and the "solution" is to make the halo models for brand publicity; it's the same reason that they build F1 cars.

That is common about all brands. There are "car guys" all over the internet that don't know anything about the cars they bought and only drive them to make content to YT/IG, and boom: They sit on the garage for months again

For example, '90s Japanese economy sports cars are now classics and are selling for north of $20k. They're only 25 years old. They have high mileage and dry-rotted rubber. In 1995, an economy sports car from 1970 was almost worthless for those reasons. That market new better than to overvalue such a car. But now, because "specialness" has been over-applied to cars at the highest levels of the market (mostly because of how visible cars are on social media), that attribute is now valuable and is being extended unnecessarily to other sectors. People are buying Japanese sports cars that were inexpensive in the 90s are putting them in garages and not driving them because they're "special." They were economy sports cars made to be driven. They were built by robots. They aren't special.

I count 17 models currently on their web site. McLaren is obviously chasing the dollars for short term gain vs long term appreciation & value (of brand).

Few years ago I bought a Dodge Challenger SRT 392 when it was just launched. Now it's 5th from the top of the line. Sounds familiar?
It's the exact same story. The models are all cool, but who cares? Red-eye, devil, srt, widebody... just stfu and make something that means something
It's nothing like it. Dodge was very clear about them making some cars that would be above it. And if you think about it, did you really think a car on the level of the 392 was where they would stop in this day and age? At the same time, Chevy had the ZL1 and Ford had the GT500. I'm sorry, but if you think you would be top dog with the 392, that's on you, not the manufacture.
And even if you had bought a Hellcat and now are pissed off about the Redeye, you might want to consider the fact that A, the Hellcat saw some years of production before they introduced the Demon and Redeye. Also, while some might consider them special, compared to what Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini offers, they are not even close.
It's nothing like it, it's a completely different ballgame.
I really like these Sunday specials that are somewhere between a "More Doug" video and a regular "Doug DeMuro" video, I hope he keeps these going.

Doug is speaking facts. Mclarens naming convention is such a mess, no one knows, clearly just marketing folks carving out all sorts of random models. Ron Dennis is missed.
Ed Bolian had a great video about how McLaren ripped of their customers with their never ending "special" cars, which became more special each generation. Unfortunately he deleted it, probably had some backlash from mclaren.

Wow is a very spot on topic, when McLaren launched the Artura, the Sabre and the speedtail I was like wtf! I just lost account of their cars.
believe it or not, the speedtail is already 2.5 years old. they revealed it on October 26, 2018. ferrari comes out with new models faster than mclaren, to be honest...

As a HUGE McLaren fan, this is my #1 complaint. Although I'm in no position to afford one anytime soon, it's insane how many special vehicles they have.
Would you rather them have a singular model so that all McLaren owners share the same exact model?

@@liquidmercury433 I think they should keep the tiers they have rn. Artura at the bottom, 720 mid, and Elva/Senna at the top. My complaint is that we now have the 620R, Elva, Sabre(er), Senna, Senna GTR, and the Speedtail as super special and limited cars. These cars listed came out within the last 2 years. I think they should have 1-2 special models every 2-4 years

I've been feeling this too lately, they have 12 models in their current lineup and almost every single one of them looks and sounds like just another McLaren.
they did rebranding recently and stopped selling 7 models, they still got 8 models and 4 of them are hyper cars for some reason.
Well... it would make sense for McLarens to look and sound like McLarens

PA Squared the difference isn’t just power. What else are they supposed to do? They’re a small independent manufacturer they can’t borrow a multiple engines from Audi like Lamborghini dose.
I think the last truly special Mclaren was the 675LT. It was actually different enough from 650s to be exciting and had new tech. Then they just started pumping it out
And then they screwed over the 675LT coupe owners by selling the 675LT spider after *promising* the buyers that they won't make a spider.
Lost a lot of trust and also devalued the coupe in one move.
I agree 100% with what McLaren is doing. People will always find something to talk about. If McLaren choose to release a car once every supermoon, people would complain that the company takes too long to produce a new model.

But currently there is no sport series, only GT(1 car), SUPERCARS(4), ULTIMATE(4). So there are only 7 cars in the lineup. 500 and 600 series production is stoped
McLaren is a brand for influencers and youtubers. They know these people constantly need the latest and greatest, so if you raise the bar every year with a "new car" they buy it just to be the one who has it
yes, BUT they're also accessible to enthusiasts who happen to have the money to invest in a super car. Ferrari won't let you do that, you have to own a used one or a base model before the dealer will even consider you, while mclaren just lets you walk in, pay and leave
Thank you SO MUCH for confirming what I've been saying forever now. McLaren has grown so overrated. I live in LA and see endless McLarens every single day, they all look the same. Whenever I talk to other "car guys" and say that they always give me grief, like "how could you think that." Senna Senna Senna, then Sabre Sabre Sabre, and whatever the rest are called seem so soulless, excluding the P1 and F1 and sometimes the 720s in a classy spec, McLaren is straight up boring and yields no imagination to wield one. Better to get a stick Aston Martin for a proper experience. Manual Transmission is driving, auto is steering, fuck anyone who tries to rational their subconscious laziness.
@@101RealTalker Getting an AM is just a bad idea in every imaginable scenario. Older ones look great yet very unreliable, new one's with the MB engines look very blend.
@@ileutur6863 I understand the reason why these people end up with McLarens, but there's a reason Ferrari won't let them buy their cars and it's the reason McLaren is a flop in the eyes of speculators: resale value. McLaren makes too many special cars that it sells to not-special people. The reason Ferraris keep their value is because you can't buy one, the "special" Ferraris even more so

I remember when the 675 LT came out, it was quite a huge deal because the only LT before that was the F1. That really seemed to hype the car up. Now though it looks like they're using it as much as they can, and I dunno, I feel it detracts from the legend of the F1 Longtail

As a car manufacturer, you know you’re in trouble when the your used car market starts effecting the strategic options of your new models.
Yeah. Lambo, for example, has basically two cars; a 10 cylinder and a 12 cylinder. And when they make special editions like the Veneo or the Sesto, it's significant.
McLaren still did a great job with the P1 though

I think the Senna is a standalone model instead of being based on the 720 as well.

This is what every supercar manufacturer does. He is right, but he's maybe a bit unfair to single our McLaren. Let's take Lamborghini as an example and (excluding all the Urus models) you have Huracan EVO, Huracan EVO Spyder, Huracan EVO RWD, Huracan RWD Spyder, Huracan EVO Fluo Capsule, Huracan STO, Huracan Super Troffeo, Huracan GT3 EVO, Aventador S, Aventador S Roadster, Aventador SVJ, Aventador SVJ Roadster, SC18 Alston, SC20 and finally the Essence SCV12. Don't even begin with Ferrari!
