Thank you for this video! I'm German and I can tell you, they are pretty rare in Germany. That time, it was produced, I was visiting the factory plant and I was able to see, who the Z1 has been produced. It was so cool. A lot of was made by hand. I saw the most of the available colors. Very pretty. You missed one thing, which is common on sportscars today: a defusor at the rear. The Z1 has a kind of that. Pay attention ed nation to the gap between the rear bumper and the bottom of the trunk hood. This is the outlet of the air. The rear muffler is formed like a wing so the air goes over the muffler through this gap and produces downforce. That is one reason why the opening of the trunk is not that big ;)
You totally missed one of the weirdest and quirkiest features of this (or any) car. The rear muffler was shaped like an aerofoil and acted like a rear spoiler to provide down force. That’s what the gigantic air gap between the trunk lid and the rear bumper is for. It allows the air that flows over the top of the muffler/spoiler to exit the rear of the car
SNEK ridiculously true. Someone broke into my buds 03 Jeep Wrangler that was a manual. Put it in reverse, and their foot was never on the clutch. Ran over an entire bush and flipped the door inside out 😂
*Fun fact:* The "1" on the Z1 badge is as German as it gets. That's how Germans write the number 1, with an up-down motion. It's also why Germans put a cross on their "7" in order to better differentiate between 1 and 7.
I write german style because my grandfather lived there for a few years before coming to america, and he taught me how germans wrote, and I thought it was functional, so I never stopped writing like that

Also as doug said...when those door raising belts broke it required 2 or 3 people to take the door off just to replace the belt because the doors were solid metal and weighed 150lbs
Hey Doug we will borrow you this cool rare BMW with slidy doors just don't over do the door rolling like 1,000 times Doug: OK cool- *Rolls the doors 999 times*
A lot of the time when he does convertibles especially if they’re old he just leaves the roof alone, I remember he did a review of some convertible once and didn’t have the top down once in the video
one time he addressed these questions about convertible roofs, he acted like it was a dumb thing to want to see, and made it overly boring by not talking and just staring at the camera the entire time the top went up and down...I thought it was a real jack-off kinda move....
sjnfaueefaefaef jdnsuiodsgsd yeah I mean if it’s a convertible and he’s reviewing it i at least expect the top to be down the entire video if he’s not gonna show it, but I mean yeah unless there’s something really special or quirky about the way it goes up and down I do feel like that is the type of thing he would and should also show us in his type of videos but if it’s just easy up and down like any other car I understand why he doesn’t bother showing us cuz if he showed us how every little thing in the car worked it would be boring and long but if it’s something unique I want him to put it in the video also though when you’re borrowing a car that is maybe one of a handful or maybe the only one in the entire continent I also understand why you wouldn’t want to risk breaking something that would be near impossible or just extremely expensive to replace especially if it is just the same as any other convertible
+Fred Frederickson for me its more about if its a power roof or not, is it hard top, soft top? and also what it looks like top up/top down, just seems to me like a soft top you have to put in the back yourself could be a real game changer on if you are interested in a car or not...
Seriously 5 times faster than my 1993 Miata power windows. I really need to clean and grease the rollers but it's too much work. Maybe I'll do it after winter when I sell the car to make it a bit more desirable
That sounds like a great plan, my friend. The other day while I was cleaning my counter tops I noticed a strange buzzing sound coming from my refrigerator - I listened carefully and had to stop wiping to make it out, but sure enough, it was buzzing away. Now, I don't know if it was just a fluke or if it was just working extra hard to cool down the delicious coffee ice cream I had gotten for me and my wife, but it made me realize the general good fortune I've had with this house. Not much has gone wrong, and the things that have - haven't been beyond my capacity to fix! Now all that could change in a heartbeat, but as long as I know god is looking over me and my family - I know everything will be alright. Come to think of it, I could probably stand to grease the rollers in my windows too. There's nothing quite like the function of a freshly greased window unit!
Congrats on 1M subscribers Doug! Keep up the great work. This BMW is 27 years old and still looks so good and classy, cant say that about many other cars.

maxxjett films since the windows aren't structural, I'm surprised they weigh that much. My 99 Sierra's doors only weigh about 70-80lbs, and that's a huge steel truck door.
Love the Z1! The hood and trunk lid are actually made from glass-fiber reinforced plastic, while the rest of the body panels are made from a weaker plastic. The steel chassis was also hot-galvanized, which was a new technique back then for better torsional stiffness. I never checked it, but I heard the exhaust is also shaped in a way to act as a spoiler to increase downforce, which is possible since the floor panel (glued to the chassis) is made from some plastic/sandwich material and completely flat. Can someone verify that? Great vid Doug!
8:07, I think I found one of the conclusion for the BMW Z1, this roadster isn't recommended for accidents or crash as Doug mentioned that the body panels are plastic instead of metals. While the panels may crack after several years, an unexpected accident or crash may make matters worse. In my opinion, this roadster should be driven with fully 100% caution for those who own of rent a Z1.
While having a lot of fun with the doors, Mr Doug has forgotten a key innovation of the Z1, it’s aero! The whole back underside of the car is totally made to create ground effect, up to the point that the exhaust silencer is gaped like the wing of a plane to channel the or and create loads of down force!! (That lis partly explains why the boot is so small)!!!
@Matyalz84 But thats the point, that this car is waaaaay slower than a McLaren, so it should receive the appropriate score. Scoring is about comparing an attribute to the best that can be, not comparing to other similar cars. There are no separate categories or tiers, that cars fit into, its all into 1 spreadsheet, and everything is held up to the same (very high) standards. Even modern Ferraris or Porsches dont get a 10 in acceleration sometimes. And btw, yes he is being objective, because he holds every car to the same standards. If he was making special exceptions for certain cars, then you can complain about objectivity, and say that he should be more objective. I dont think you understand the meaning of the word "objective" here.
Acceleration 0-60 7.5 seconds, Dougscore: 1??? So what does a vehicle that takes 20 seconds get? Or more common, a vehicle in the 9-10 second range? The BMW should get at least a 2 or 3 for that effort. Not great, but you can’t just lump everything over 6 seconds as a 1.
It's part of the "weekend" category and it's scored according to modern performance standards. If the car can't do 0-60 in at least 6 seconds, it's not exactly a very good weekend car even if 7-8 seconds is good by general car standards.
@@SampleTracks2224 yeah but taking into account difference in how old the vehicles are would only complicate the performance score, besides you're. Not going to be driving the car in the 1980's but now, in modern times, that's why he compaires all cars the same
Apparently, the roof of this car has been removed, or it would have been visible from the trunk. With some experience, one can open or close the roof in about 10 seconds.
Mahmood Y.H Yup he sure is different. He never asks his viewers to like, comment or subscribe to his videos. All he gives a shit about is his column! LOL
Akash Iyer Which shows that asking for likes, comments and subscribes is as silly as it always sounds - he's got his followers despite (or perhaps because of) not marching to the same drum as every other youtuber...
I think you misunderstood the badge and the joining of the Z and 1. It’s a European one which gets written with the leading upswing. Love the removable panels. Reminds me of a Nokia 5110.
Imagine casually walking by and seeing Doug driving around in circles around a tripod making weird hand gestures and spending nearly 7 minutes talking about doors and windows lol
As an 80's child I can't believe I never heard of this car until right now. Doors that slip down... Why... That's a clever little idea.. It seems like such a gimmicky 1980's concept. I love it!
But, in this car it would have to go over and secure across the upper windshield mounted roll bar... my inner engineer wants to see how they accomplished such a feat and still be air/water tight! Go back and review it again!!! LOL
nathan koroush My Mercedes roof also doesn't operate automatically. I have to do it manually. I guess time is a bitch to the rubber in cars over time and the car economy is a bitch charging an arm and a leg to replace cheap hydraulic rubber rings
I'd go further and say stupid. It's typical bmz, taken too far. The execs on this one was defo doing alot of 1980s Colombias finest. Total over engineering for the sake of it. That car would of looked just as decent with normal door, saved a load of weight, and millions in R&D.

0-60 in 7.5s gives you an 1 out of 10 score? How about a car that does in 15s? Or maybe 20s? Would it be 0 and -5?
Mikhail Americans don't know those European cars
ikr it's pretty fast for me wtf
Agree. He should be more objective, you can't compare all cars to some freaking McLaren
has he ever reviewed a Yugo?
@Matyalz84
But thats the point, that this car is waaaaay slower than a McLaren, so it should receive the appropriate score.
0-60 in 7.5sec earns a *1* ??? You're spoiled, Doug
Leofred my gti is 5.9 😂
I can buy a car for 5 grand that does it in 5 seconds. 7.5 is SLOW.
Under 8 seconds is alright to me but yeah like 10 seconds 0-60 should be a 1.
Alex C your car isn’t from this time period, gtfo
For a 1988 was very fast.
God, I could only imagine what kind of hell on Earth you'd have to go through to get that door repaired when it ultimately fails.
Stephen E yes he Can. He Can lump anything he wants.
Stop driving 1.4liters bud
in 1989, how fast was your average Murican sedan to 60? Judging 30-year-old cars by modern standards, does the word "stupid" float by, in any way?
@@SampleTracks2224 yeah but taking into account difference in how old the vehicles are would only complicate the performance score, besides you're. Not going to be driving the car in the 1980's but now, in modern times, that's why he compaires all cars the same
what about the roof?? :)
No roof
I ate it
Roadster: no roof
Apparently, the roof of this car has been removed, or it would have been visible from the trunk. With some experience, one can open or close the roof in about 10 seconds.
@@elespiritudeltigre9526 it has a top/roof. google it

*1.OOO.OOO** Subs Son !!!*
Nice to see Doug's dad stop by. Your son is one of my favorite TH-camrs
1000000 bored phucks.
Mahmood Y.H hell just mention it in one of his vids
Doug the type of guy to wear a bicycle shirt while reviewing a car.
Iiro Nissinen #AmsterdamLife
W A I T
Iiro Nissinen yes, yes he is.
I think you misunderstood the badge and the joining of the Z and 1. It’s a European one which gets written with the leading upswing.
Love the removable panels. Reminds me of a Nokia 5110.
Happy 1 million subs Doug!
Doug, the type of guy to have a million subscribers.
+1
CONGRATZ ON 1MILLION SUBS DADDY DOUG!!!
3:00 Doug the type of guy showing his viewers how to get into a car....
Doug, the type of guy to borrow someone's Netflix account for free and feel bad about it...
1 MILLION SUBS now show us your quirks and features
^‼️
Yup
Robert Serro looo
Doug is the type of guy to give his girlfriend a Doug score after having sex
Lymbo - lol
xD
This had me dying 😂😂
😂
"Starting the weekend categories with styling"
Imagine casually walking by and seeing Doug driving around in circles around a tripod making weird hand gestures and spending nearly 7 minutes talking about doors and windows lol
Doug is the human personification of this car - strange, quarky, but cool
SpartanHighKing14 you forgot about Doug's unusual features ;)
Doug is a savage I thought he was flicking us off at 5:34
Alex Gray same here, I would be
Flipping*
Justin C. Thank you
Yeah!.. it's the nose!
I wasn't aware I wouldn't be able to find something unless I knew where it was. Thanks Doug, learning new things every day.
As an 80's child I can't believe I never heard of this car until right now. Doors that slip down... Why... That's a clever little idea.. It seems like such a gimmicky 1980's concept. I love it!
Your not the only one,i thought it was a Miata on the thumbnail, lol
same here
i didn’t know this existed till just now..
lol
It slightly infuriates me that he never shows the converting roof of convertible cars.
Me too. I wonder how hard it is to get in and out of the car with roof closed? Maybe it has no convertible roof.
NO! I ALWAYS DO! I JUST FORGOT THIS TIME! GO WATCH THE MCLAREN 650S! THE VANQUISH! I SPECIFICALLY ADDRESSED THIS! DAMMIT! DAMMIT!!!!
It would have been fun to watch Doug try to get in and out of this car with the roof up. Especially this small car, with that door design.
Followup! Followup! (lla)
But, in this car it would have to go over and secure across the upper windshield mounted roll bar... my inner engineer wants to see how they accomplished such a feat and still be air/water tight! Go back and review it again!!! LOL
So how do you repair a cracked plastic body panel then? Is it possible?
You replace it sexy
desperate
*cringe*
Free Hhhh Learn English.
Reinforce it from behind with a strong glue and plastic. Then sand it and bondo it.
Show the roof opening and closing!!!!!
Honestly
Who said it has a roof?
it's a roadster dumbass lmao.
It is a BMW, roof was not operating.
nathan koroush My Mercedes roof also doesn't operate automatically. I have to do it manually. I guess time is a bitch to the rubber in cars over time and the car economy is a bitch charging an arm and a leg to replace cheap hydraulic rubber rings
This man is a meme himself
Bmw was on heavy drugs when they made this car!
"Don't ride the white horse!"
Elvis K Weißbier!
“This...is a silly little car..”
I'd go further and say stupid. It's typical bmz, taken too far. The execs on this one was defo doing alot of 1980s Colombias finest.
Total over engineering for the sake of it. That car would of looked just as decent with normal door, saved a load of weight, and millions in R&D.
Clyde nope, but does mean bad decision making.
THANK YOU DADDY DOUG
You didn't find out how the roof goes up.
You're not the only one.
I've seen other POV reviews with the same problem here.
Congrats on 1 million subscribers Doug!
