The Lighthouses up and down the Florida Keys are not only beautiful to look at but they make excellent homes for wildlife beneath the surface. Diving in with a mask, fin and snorkel is the ULTIMATE way to experience one of the many BREATH TAKING FLORIDA KEYS LIGHTHOUSES! We have snorkeled Alligator Reef, American Shoal and Sand Key Lighthouses in Islamorada, Big Pine and Key West, respectively. This was our first time diving at Sombrero Reef Lighthouse off of Marathon, Fl. What makes this experience a MUST DO when visiting the Florida Keys is not only the beauty of the structure but the tropical species such as, barracuda, yellowtail snapper, hogfish, and even sea turtles that you may get to swim along side with. If you don't have your own boat to get there DO NOT FRET! There are many charter boats that run trips there regularly. Call around at the local dive shops and hop on for an ADVENTURE!

Another Great video! You gals give great advice and explain things well. The simple things like how to size a mask- are great pieces of advice. Keep up the different videos! Fish, play, how to operate a boat, anchor ball, fish a bridge, great stuff! Chicks rule!
Great Video. I have dove from the Drift dives in the West Palm Beach area and the reefs and wrecks in the keys. Some of my best memories were doing night dives The first tank was always at dusk and after off gassing we would do our 2nd tank. One evening in West Palm out of Riviera Marina, we did an extended dive on Nitrox. When we dropped in the current it was cloudy skies and then a storm blew up and it was so cool to be dive the corridor with the lightening flashing the sea floor like a strobe. One min you only saw what you shinned the dive light on, then... you saw everything! it was freaky.
You two are just too dang cute, keep it up ! Your parents must be proud, they obviously did a great job raising you two.
@6:55 the barracuda has a fishing hook necklace...he doesn't even seem to care...he wears it as his battle badge! Barracuda 1 - Fisherman 0 :)

We went there every year when I was a kid. Haven't been in over 30 years. I love that reef. I have so many good memories and a couple of sketchy ones. I had to free dive down 50' to get an anchor off of the coral for this boneheaded boater one time. Another time I was being stalked by a 6'ft Cuda. Didn't like how he was looking at me so I swam at him hard and he took off. Lots of Nurse sharks but never really saw the Bulls or Hammers that seem to be found between there and the bridge nowadays. Thanks for shooting this so I can show my family my old stomping grounds :)

Sombrero lighthouse ea one of our favorite dive spots when I lived in Marathon im the '70s. The reef was beautiful back then

But is it possible to get a video that show how best to locate good spots to catch bait fish. I've seen your video on how to set bait traps. But for those who don't live near the ocean and can't use bait traps. Is there an easy way to find good spots that are loaded with bait fish to use a caste net or a sabiki?

We used to go there all the time as kids as its just off Islamorada, it would be a little run for us from Big Pine but its a beautiful place!

Nice video. It seems like the coral around the lighthouse is dead. Is that common to see dead coral reefs or is it just because of the lighthouse maybe? Here in Indonesia a lot of the coral has died because of human activities and destructive fishing methods. It's really sad to see all the bleached out and broken coral and it seems really difficult to get established again once it's been destroyed.
Under the lighthouse has always been mostly coral rubble. The reef is south of the light in deeper water, but it doesn't look too healthy. Looks like the hard corals are dying and being replaced by soft coral (whips and fans). Still lots of tropical fish, though.
Not many cudas around. Every time I have dive on the light houses there be tons of huge baracudas.
Alligator Lighthouse usually has some giant cudas around it

You gals keep up the good work !! You're first class.... I first SCUBA dove the Sombrero in 1988 & would come down 3-4 times a years & take another class, given by a instructor friend the lives in Marathon..It's very sad to see what us humans & climate change have done to the reef...very, very sad.
