  • People Try Anchovies & Sardines for the First Time | Azula
    Transcript:
Hey guys, it’s Cam from Azula. We’re here at Oceana headquarters. We love fish at Azula, but we figured that since we talk the talk, we needed to walk the walk.
So I’m here with Rosie, Katie and Sam, and we’re going to try some fish.
Just so we know, what are we - OK, that’s bread. What is this fish? [Sardines.] And this is? [Anchovies.] Got it.
So I’m going to eat this little reject because he looks extra hairy. He looks so hairy. He smells really salty.
    [And the verdict?]
It’s really chewy. Like when you don’t cook bacon all the way, and you cover it in salt.
Yeah! I don’t get the bacon thing. I get a whole lot of salt. But I like it.
    [So you’d say you’re a fanchovy?]
    No.
Wow, I totally see where you got the furry part from. It looks oily, too. Oh, I’m concerned. Ohhhh, nope.
Oh, this is totally fine. That just tastes like … fish. It just tastes like any other good fish.
Yeah, that’s fine. I’d eat this whole thing - I mean, I wouldn’t. But if I had to, I’d probably eat this whole plate.
    [Is that a head?]
    Why’d you say that?!
    [Guess we’ll find out.]
    Good. I agree. Very good!
It’s very good! I like it!
[Yeah, you guys can just keep the fish down there.]
I think most surprising, THIS. Because I did not expect it to be that good and it was. It’s like jerky. That’s what it reminds me of. Jerky of the sea.
And this one is when you put a lot of effort into making your meal. You really go all out. You have your oregano, tomato, sardine.
My advice would be to try everything once. You don’t know whether you might love it, be OK with it or really hate it.
But you don’t know until you try, so that’s what’s most important.

Anchovies are usually used in different noodle broths

People who don't like anchovies have a, what I like to call, childish palate. They likely prefer things like added sugar in their fruit juice and Mac with Cheese for dinner.

I love anchovies but you can't eat them whole. They're waay salty. U got to apply them to correctly

Anchovies are more of an ingredient (that you would never guess was even there).

I'm not a big fan of anchovies but I do like sardines

Why are the sardines (re)cooked though? I just eat them straight out of the can, along with the liquid. And anchovies would be great if they were not salty as fuck.

Yeah anchovies just taste like you're eating a big spoonful of salt.

@@samsquanch1996 You can still taste the anchovy, and when I do, I always think, "damn, I love this flavor, but if only it did not have all this salt".
I may have a solution for that problem though. One day, I want to make a macaroni broth using anchovies. I'm not sure, but I think, with enough water, and cutting each anchovy up into 8-10 pieces, the anchovies should melt faster, and the salt should distribute evenly in the water. It would have to be stirred regularly to ensure even dilution, but I think it can be done. I just have to use the right number of anchovies depending on how much macaroni I want to cook.

I could never eat them straight out the can, i like to heat them up in the pan, season them lightly and toss them in a salad.
