Fun fact since you guys like cats:
The Titanic had a mascot called Jenny (who was a cat). She was transferred from the Olympic and had kittens while onboard the Titanic. However, she was last seen carrying her kittens off the Titanic while Titanic was docked in Southampton, UK. Jim Mulholland spotted this a decided not to remain a crew member seeing the event as a bad omen. The TH-camr Sam from Historic Travels did a video on Jenny.
Weirdly enough it is common for cats to leave ships a port of call before a ship sinks. The cat Emmy of the ship Empress of Ireland also left the ship at a port in Canada before the ship sank. Also, Lusitania's cat named Dowie abandoned her before she set sail for Britain and was sunk.

Me, hearing that a character is Polish: *ears perked*
Okay it was 1912. Poland basically didn't exist on a map (we were taken apart by our lovely neightbours) and Polish people were under an occuppation from 3 different countries and the conditions for Poles depended HIGHLY on which part you were unlucky-enough to live in... So it wasn't just "Eastern Europian prejudice" (not to mention WE ARE CENTRAL EUROPE NOT EASTERN). So... anti-colonialism could've been even there... I imagine someone asking:
    - Where are you from?
    - Poland.
    - No, I'm asking about a country.
Or something like that. Since our nation was trying and failing to uprise multiple times and only the WW1 gave us the actual chance to get our country back (last time, we hoped Napoleon would help but he decided that going east in the winter, wearing summer shoes was a good idea, so, oh well). So that could've been an amazing topic to show discrimination ona cultural level not just because of the shade of someone's skin... but that would require care and work, and good writing.

Telling a good heist story is all in the setup. The first 2/3 of the story is putting all of the pieces into play and then you spring the trap and you watch how everything plays out.

The lack of racial politics is definitely weird because the author has an MA in Postcolonial Studies and her previous book is def about racism... though without calling out anyone for being racist. I don't think she even uses the word racist in Hani & Ishu. You know what? The lack of historical race politics makes sense now.

To be fair, on the Titanic children was something like under 13 or 14, so you could get a kid who wasn’t allowed on a lifeboat. Also apparently the way the rules were interpreted was different on each side of the Titanic.
But also I can think of a dozen better reasons a kid could be alone on the Titanic.

As someone who is writing a book and struggles with description, at least I can relax knowing there is a book that is worst in that department. Don’t know if I agree with William or not but having a meeting to decide if terrible authors just stop might be a good thing for society XD. Great review as always.

"As someone who is writing a book and struggles with description"
My advice is to describe as little as possible. I have the same problem, so I cut description to the bare minimum. Sometimes less is more. Play to your strengths as a writer (in my case, it's dialogue and characterization), and let readers imagine things for themselves. I have been reading Terry Pratchett recently and I'm struck by how little description there is in the Discworld novels. But they are massively entertaining, fast-paced reads - perhaps _because_ they don't get bogged down in unnecessary minutiae.

Ok but what I think would help with this book is more small human moments. More scenes with people living happily unaware of what to come because you can't have something like this , a HUGE tragedy at that time and not have those moments of despair brought on by the inevitable end

  • @maggiedean5691
    @maggiedean5691 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It actually is a cool premise for a tragedy heist story of sorts if it was done right. I wish books didn't waste good premises. I have my basic thoughts of it below.
I could see a thief with a heart of gold character working well here. Oh the choices in the end for him. Would he sacrifice himself? Would he be the one to give up on the heist to help someone or just to escape mixed with the more Ruthless one who's dead set on survival towards the end and the still greedy one who wants the prize as the ship sinks.
The only survivor being the ruthless one or the heart of gold character would each say something different.
If I wrote it the second to last shot would be a pan to the 2 or 3 dead guys, one holding the prize in his folder hands with and the life boats flickering away. We'd then smash cut to a historian/someone reading the journal of one of the heist members, looking at the priceless gems in a case for the ending of it.

From "Titanic Girlsquad Heist" I was honestly expecting time travel. Like in the card game Chrononauts you can steal various artifacts from their time period, and maybe another player steals it from you with a "Get there first" card. So they'd know the Titanic was going to sink and had to pull off the heist before that happens. And maybe they get attached to certain passengers while they're there and try to manipulate events so those people survive.

The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (even if you don't make a video on it, it's just a good book that I recommend reading. Good shit.)
The Starless Crown by James Rollins (not good shit, it'd be interesting to see what you guys think of it. I don't want to influence anybody's opinion, but I like to collect examples of what not to do when writing a book and this one is good for characterization)

Oh gosh James rollins... the man who copy pastes a half-sententence definition of a science term from the glossary in the back of *his own book* as the only explanation of a core scientific concept you get in the entire story.
His books are more than a little stupid, but I actually do enjoy reading them. Sigma force is good dumb action-adventure fun, with a not well- understood by the author but at least vaguely researched science behind them.

Hold up, though... because of Will's semi-joking rant about needing publishing gatekeepers (aka traditional publishing), I assumed this was an indie published book, but it was published by HarperCollins. It doesn't have a lot of ratings for a Big FIve book but the majority are 4-stars and up. So, I don't know... even though it sounds like an objectively bad book, books are like any other craft and art. You can throw paint on a canvas with zero effort and 9 out of 10 people will hate it, but what matters is that 10th person who feels like it touches their soul. With books it takes more effort to know if you're that 10th person, but this is why free book samples and the "look inside" feature are so wildly important. If more people utilized those, fewer people would find themselves stuck reading a book they absolutely hate.

That didnt even dio it, wow. Or have emily be forced to be a role of the maid and her bitching about that with her background?! or everything calls her a maid whn she is a regular guest. Jut basic rassism shown.
    Maria spills the tea :P

As someone who loves watching Bridgerton as just pure scandalous fun and like the Regency vibes, at least Bridgerton acknowledges racism in some way. It has a diverse cast, but it doesn’t do so just to make it “modern” or check it off the box. It does explore how being black and brown among nobility especially means that POC do struggle more just to be seen as equal or be just as influential and desirable.

    • @hotplotsandsynonyms
      @hotplotsandsynonyms ปีที่แล้ว +2

That was such a deeply hilarious Cinderella remake. Like, the movie was bad, but I really, really, REALLY want to see the sequel to it where that prince and that Cinderella are traveling the world and their relationship fails because they both fall in love with the same other guy, which causes them to realize they didn't actually like each other, and then the other guy has to decide who he wants more (I vote for prince, because he had a little bit of personality beyond rebellion, but it's cool if Other Guy is into obsessed dressmakers with little thought beyond rebelling against society). But, you know, we'd have to get some real film-makers to take that trash-fire on for it to be any good.

    Two things with haters:
    1. Is not that they personally dislike a thing, but if they hate it in bad faith. And even if the YTer is not hating in bad faith, they attract commenters who ARE hating in bad faith and the comment section risks turns into a toxic cesspool.
    2. The need for solidarity with people on Something. Star Trek, for example, is hyper niche and fans are few and far between. If a YTer says they're a fan, then go randomly and blanketedly trash talk Voyager I'ma not going to trust whatever else they may potentially say. I clicked on a Star Trek video because this is my childhood and I want a good time.
Analysing/critiquing a Voyager episode and noting flaws along the way is very different from straight up saying 'Voyager bad'.
Videos like yours tend to stay light-hearted, but so far as I know you haven't reviewed something that has a hyper niche fan base (Alex Meyers has had this experience - he noted the comments on his Wanda Vision video more than once, despite him saying up front that the show wasn't his usual genre).
    For you:
It's much less likely that anyone but the author is emotionally attached to this book, and if they can't take a critique and a sharing of someone's emotional experience from their readership, that's some personal issues that they've got there and they shouldn't search YT for their book title because they can't deal.
    For potential authors:
Get your stuff beta tested. If you can't deal with what comes back from them, you are not going to deal with the public's response so it's better you learn how to cope on a small number of people.

A fun fact that's not particularly relevant, but my point is that i found this in a few afternoons of searching the internet:
some of my ancestors were on a boat, owned by white starline (same company that owned the titanic), at the exact same time the titanic sailed and sank. Thankfully, my family made it to their destination despite a measles outbreak onboard and a detour to a quarantine station. Also: imagine waiting for loved ones to arrive by boat and hearing about the titanic sinking. Horrifying.
I found passenger lists, dozens of newpaper articles about this not famous at all ship which was hard to google because it was named "SS Irishman". It would be so much easier to research The TITANIC!!!

I am 100% calling bull that one of the characters in 1912 could do Judo. Judo was created in 1882. The creator had one school which was in a BUDDHIST TEMPLE. You cant just pull important cultural focal points out of your rear end to add "flavor" and "worldly" aspects to your charecter. At least she had the wherewithall not to say Karate, whoch sidnt even become an official martial art in Japan until the 1920s. The only Japanese fighting form this charecter should know is Jiujitsu. Unpopular Opinion: The little "fame" that this author even has, she is overrated for what she has done and continues to do 💅💫
Edit: There's so many books where it's literally "cololonaism bad" with literally no substance. Like this literally reminds me of Babel where there's no story just boring themes. And to your point at the beginning of the video, authors are writing stories with no kind of storytelling capabilities so they rely on themes if even that.
