Legendary primatologist Jane Goodall says that humanity's survival depends on conservation of the natural world. In conversation with head of TED Chris Anderson, she tells the story of her formative days working with chimpanzees, how she transformed from a revered naturalist into a dedicated activist and how she's empowering communities around the world to save natural habitats.
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). It's simple: stop comparing your actions to others and start making your own intelligent decisions. It's a kind of cliche to say that the change comes from inside, but it's a completely true idea which should be repeated more and more. It's conditioning. Firstly, do your part: use the opportunity of searching on the internet, which has thousands of sources of good information, and use it to understand and modify your actions.
Secondly, when you're highly conscious about your role (but remember: do not stop improving yourself), try as much to spread this and OUR message: "it's a collective project". Nature has gave us too much, so let's do so. Actually, we're part of it, so really reconnect with all the beauty that surrounds you and don't let superficial feelings domain you. Forget fame, status, unhealthy cravings.
It's up to you and me to fight for our rights to live in peaceful world with our Mother Nature

I disagree. A few individuals changing their habits unilaterally will do diddly squat. The pressure you put on peers might have a slightly greater effect, but still completely out of proportion to scale of the problem faced. The solutions to climate change come at the supranational level. They are global problems which require global solutions. It will never be done solely by individuals acting independently.
If you want change, petition your government, or better still the UN. Fight for policy changes - carbon taxes, ambitious emissions targets, investment in solar, wind, tidal, hydroelectric, nuclear. It will honestly do more good than cutting meat out of your own diet. (Though feel free to so that too, of course. Every little helps. It's just that, "every little" here is nowhere near enough.)

Thank you so much for this. Thank you to TED and to Jane Goodall. You have inspired me and I promise to continue to do my part. I hope more people see this so I am commenting to let the algorithm know that this is a great video :-D
I wonder what exactly we can do to take action and I thought about the following things:
    1. Make ethical eating choices. The meat and dairy industry are very harmful to nature and animals. Also, it is great for your own health to eat plant-based. If you already are vegan, maybe talk to people (who want to of course) about it. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you can try to do some research on this topic.
    2. Reduce consumption. We buy so many things. These things need to be produced. If you really need something, try to buy it second-hand. In Germany, there are platforms on the Internet for people to exchange/ sell/ buy used or even new stuff that people bought and never used. This goes from clothing to furniture etc. If such thing doesn't exist where you live, you can try to do an own "exchange party" where you ask your friends whether they have clothing they don't wear anymore to exchange with each other.
Maybe you can try these things out

1:50 ... no only Asia please... saying only Asia is making me uncomfortable.....

    • @aylbdrmadison1051
      @aylbdrmadison1051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

To be fair, she did not say in Asia *only,* and it's common knowledge that the largest market exists there. Perhaps that is not entirely true though? If not, you might consider sourcing any information you are aware of that disputes that. It certainly happens on all the other continents too, so it's not entirely unlikely that it's just as bad somewhere else (like here in the U.S.). But anyone can just "say" that, so that's why we need to source.
But I can understand why that would make you feel uncomfortable in a world where most people point fingers at others, while denying their own mistakes. But the good news is that most people still can't stand being called a _"hypocrite"_ and that's a good thing, because it lets us know that people know it's wrong to be a hypocrite and by their adverse reaction we can see that some part of them recognizes they are hypocrites sometimes.

Do you have tapped water? Do you have electricity powering your house? Do you buy your groceries from a super market? Do you use any type of non-recyclable plastics. If you're doing any of these things your impact is larger than you think. The problem is that there is so much profit to be made catering for your convenience.

@@kellyberry4173 : Actually, Cygnus Eight's comment inspired me. And although you gave generally excellent advice (and thank you for that), I don't agree that asking questions and making statements are necessarily _inciting_ in and of themselves. He was very civil about it, and if we do not ask questions and make statements, out ability to communicate is more than just drastically diminished.

But death is a certainty, it cannot be avoided. Once you can accept that fact, you’re free.
In life, whatever happens, not matter how it unfolds or wherever it takes place and whenever it does or doesn’t - not one grain of sand or spot of dust, not one blade of grass, molecule of air, no thing is ever in the wrong place. How could it be. It couldn’t be any other way.
Let go of it, you can’t hold on to it so why bother? We play in this illusion called life as a way for the universe to experience itself. It is a very deceptive illusion that manifests as a seemingly concrete experience of a reality but it is an illusion all the same; a musing of the dreaming Godhead.

    Thank you, Dr. Jane Goodall,
Throughout your lifetime, you have developed a perspective not a lot of people will ever be able to obtain. Your views of the environment are vital to the future of humanity. You have seen the world as it has evolved over the last 40+ years, We have developed the technology to do so much good in the world. Yet those who are able rarely to do so. The preservation of our planet is a constant worry in many of our lives and it is true every day we live we make an impact on the planet. But what is a poor man to do? What kind of positive impact can we make? What will be left of the world for children to inherit if we don't? I know many of us feel compelled to make a difference but where do we start?

I don't necessarily agree that aggression is inherent. I think it's learned because of the repetition compulsion, i.e. wanting to do harm to others because they themselves were harmed. To explain in more detail what is going on with the repetition compulsion is that a person is traumatized and instead of redeeming themselves and turning it around they inflict the same harm onto others as others did to them figuratively or metaphorically as a clumsy, immature attempt to heal because they are so wounded and damaged. And since humans and chimpanzees are closely related, chimpanzees might also have the repetition compulsion, so in short aggression in and of itself might not be inherited from chimpanzees but the repetition compulsion that may be causing it, what this all boils down to is that chimpanzees have this troubled, traumatized side of them, that we humans also have.
