It probably wouldn't have worked. I live in Pittsburgh and the Steelers wound never switched to the west Coast offense and that's all Montana knew how to play and even though he was from Pittsburgh he hated growing up here. I have seen him say so in countless interviews over the years. As a fan going back to the early 80s I seriously think it would have been a mistake for everyone involved.

He is not the GOAT he was a system quarterback who was forever injured. If you think fragile little Joe would have held up in an offense where he couldn't get rid of the ball quickly you're sadly mistaken. Elway and Marino were much more talented than Montana.

Montana just didnt fit into Steeler o-coordinator Ron Erhardt's offense and remember, the Steelers were coming off a 12-4 season with O'Donnell in 1992.
So it just didnt wouldnt have made any sense to go after Montana unless they were gonna overhaul their entire offense around him.
And if im actually remembering correctly, Tampa Bay tried to go after O'Donnell in the 1993 preseason, the first year of free agency, and the Steelers re-signed him for 3 more years.

@4040visionpod But the quarterback also has to be the right fit for that new team. Otherwise, even the most experienced quarterbacks would have to go through the learning curves of a new offensive system, like Tom Brady had to do in Tampa. (Transitioning from the Erhardt-Perkins system in New England to the Air Coryell system, which Bruce Arians ran in Tampa.)
That being said, Montana transitioning from Bill Walsh's West Coast system to Ron Erhardt's system in Pittsburgh probably wouldn't have been bad. However, I don't recall Montana ever work out of the shotgun formation, which Erhardt's system used often.

If the Steelers bring in Montana, that would mean that they wouldn't have matched the offer that Tampa made for O'Donnell (who was a restricted FA. Not too many people remember this part). Also, I see a lot of the comments that people make about the system. Those criticisms are valid, but I think that Montana would find a way to make it work, especially since he would have had better weapons in Pittsburgh than he had in KC. Also, I do see him getting them to one SB, if not two (remember, they were a game away from the SB in 94 with O'Donnell).
Also, here's another "what if" involving the 49ers and QB's that year: Apparently, the 49ers wanted Rick Mirer badly, and I think they were willing to trade Steve Young to the Seahawks for the #2 pick. If the Seahawks say yes, Young could have possibly gotten them into the playoffs (remember, they had Pro Bowl RB Chris Warren and a great defense). Also, Young leaving means that Joe stays and retires as a 49er.

I think this is very interesting. Assuming Pittsburgh wouldn't have had to give up too many key players to get Montana, I definitely believe the Steelers could have won at least 1 Super Bowl with Montana as their QB -- posibly two, and maybe Montana would have played longer as well.

@@4040visionpod Exactly -- if all Pittsburgh would have had to give up was a 1st Rd pick to get Montana, the Steelers' roster would NOT have been the least bit impacted or depleted ... and if the Steelers were good enough to get to the Super Bowl with Neil O'Donnell, they would have cruised there with Montana as QB ... and once there, with his superior knowledge of the NFC teams and their personnel, there is no way the Montana-led Steelers would have lost to an NFC team in the SB ... Let's not get down on Neil O'Donnell too much. He was able to get the Steelers finally to the Super Bowl after so many other Steelers QB's couldn't. As I recall, Rod Woodson actually pleaded to him to stay with the team but with "Slash" getting so much undue buzz he probably felt the writing was on the wall against him. Steelers could have won that SB but to be honest, Dallas was the slightly better team overall and was deserving of the Lombardi trophy, unlike the Packers in SB45 who were far inferior to the Steelers, but the fix was in against Pittsburgh that year.
