Okay I have to say: This set up is my favourite. It's so nice, I love the more natural asthetic and this just looks so cozy and relaxing. If I was a rat I would feel really comfortable in there. I especially like the bamboo ladder, the toys and how you wrapped a rope around the big branch. The positioning of the individual things just make sense, the rats can use everything, but the space between the objects isn't too big or narrow, the rats can still get to every toy, ledge or sleeping area and nothing is in the way. It's very pleasing to the eye.
I have so many questions because I think I might get two rats in 2-3 years. But I noticed something strange with your cage and it made me wonder something. How do you connect items to the cage and do you need 6-10 inches of bedding Also, do rats need wheels for energy and where do you get your cage hopefully somebody replies with the correct answers?
@@anyways_.g Well, I mean I can try, but as I don't live in the states nor the UK, I can't tell you where she got the cage from. I think it's from critter nation? In germany/europe there's a similiar one from Savic. She explains a similiar setup in detail in the video "Naturalistic rat cage tour!" which was uploaded in december. In there you can clearly see the way some of the items were connected. Most perches or ledges are usually connected via hanger bolts, where one flat washer is placed on the bolt inside the cage and one outside. Then it gets secured by a wing nut. Most sold perches come with these washers/nuts/bolts, so if you don't diy it, you don't have to worry about it. But you can buy those in sets on amazon. You might be able to see it in certain shots of this video, but she connects the ikea hanger and some other things with shower curtain hooks from ikea to the cage. Again you can find a lot of other alternatives to connect your items to the cage. In hardware stores you get metal hooks in S shapes for very cheap, hooked screws etc. You might even be able to use cable ties if your rats can't chew on them, same goes for rope. I recommend looking up how some bird cages were setup. As for the bedding: I don't really know. Bedding can be quite enriching but I don't know whether it's needed like for gerbils or hamsters. Unlike hamsters they do not spend most of their time underground and they probably would prefer to sleep in a hammock. As you measure in meters/centimeters in germany, I don't know how high 6 inches would be, but the bedding in emiologys setups aren't higher than the height of her rats. It's more for the purpose of digging or foraging. Wheels for rats is also debated on TH-cam. If they have a lot of other enrichment and a lot of floorspace/free roaming time it probably isn't needed. And the wheels would have to be massive in order to prevent their backs from being bend (you also have to keep their long tails in mind). I guess depending on the breed even those for degus or chinchillas would be too small. Hope this helped a bit!

Hello! My Rats have been getting older and have been getting more porphyrin and I'm just wondering, is it normal? They don't seem sick but there not cleaning it as much. Again, there old so maybe that's why?
Had to read the description because when you said you only had 3 rats, I’mma like, that doesn’t seem right. Lol. I love seeing King Crumble, and in typical male rat fashion, of course his throne is a dirty litter box. XD And the poor other boys just couldn’t stay out of the way. I’ll admit I got really distracted by looking at their lil noses sticking out of the hammock.
Hi! So I’ve had my rats since they were 1 months old and now they’re 6 months old. I’ve tried my best to tame them but I think i was a bit too scared of them biting me when i first started to try taming them. I also think I started too late with the taming. They’re a bit aggressive and they bite a lot which is one of the reasons for why I’ve been bad with the taming part. I really don’t know what to do and ive tried having them in the playpen with me ect but it doesn’t seem to help. Do u have any advice or tips that could help maybe?

another lovely chill video emi, I like to put them on in background when I'm making notes or colouring 💛 how do you go about keeping wooden items clean ? especially the naturalistic ones you'd be less likely to paint ?
All the wooden items I can get varnished to stop pee soaking in but when they get particularly bad I’ll rise them in the shower, spray them with white vinegar and then pop them outside in the sun to dry ☺️
Someone Plz Help!! Hey what should i do if one my female mice bites the other ear off another one my female mice i have a 10 gallon i feed them daily and they have water constantly and i also play with them for 10-20 minutes a day but today i saw that one had its ear chewed off! is it stress? is it one just trying to show dominance should i get a bigger home ( i have 3 in there all female) also what should i do to heal a mouse with its ear chewed off because all the internet is showing me is “mouse with human ear”
I feel silly asking this because I don't know if I just missed this, but what are you using to clean your cage? I know in a previous vid you mentioned using a vinegar-water mix and baby wipes, but I was curious if that's still the case
50% white vinegar and 50% water solution, sometimes I will use a pet safe spray though as the vinegar doesn’t always make the room smell great 🤢 and either tissue or non scented wipes
Yes, adult rats can easily kill a baby that young. They need to have same age company at their age otherwise it messes up the development, but also need to be at least 8 weeks old and 18-200g roughly before being introduced 🙂
Hi Emi I spotted you put supplements in their water, I was wondering is this something you would advise doing for ratties of any age? My lasses are 1 yo now, but I've never given them supplements
Hey so i bought 3 rats, 1 male and 2 females. I know you dont like this but its for snake food... i want to do it the humane way tho, i got a pretty big bin and put in a bunch of toys but they always turn over the hides because they try to go under them and then they have to sleep on the open... what do i do
I’m not against breeding rats for snake food if it’s done ethically. I don’t really advise keeping them in bins because that’s when respiratory issues can occur, but even if you have the top meshed out and can put a hammock on the mesh it’ll give them a place to sleep that they can’t move. I’d also recommend having a male group and a female group, it’s not good to have the males in with any babies and to breed the females back to back.
@@Emiology Tysm for the help, honestly didnt expect it. I know that they can get respiratory issues so i bought a tall bin and i have mesh on the lid and all sides so its bassicaly like a cage. Again tysm!
sorry for the late comment but what spray do you use to disinfect things with? i'm so worried about using anything scented and upsetting their respiratory systems!
emi, I cleaned the rat cage out yesterday, and today i come in for some normal interacting, and I see some poo scattered around the cage and not in the litterbox, i suspect it was just one of them doing this but. Up until now i have NEVER seen a poo outside of the box since they were fully trained, they arent old, only a year and a month. Is this a heslth issue? or a behavioural one? What happened? I think its only one rat because there is a lot of poo in the litter box, and some outside.
Hi emiology... I just got three rats and have had them for a few weeks now and they're still skittish and scared of me do you have any recommendations on things I can do to help this? I've watched your bonding video and it's just not seeming to work...
Some rats just take a while to warm up, and it's best to keep going with the positive reward system and hanging out with them in their freeroam. A good thing to do though is to every time you go by the cage give them a bit of food as this can teach them that you're nice, and also end every encounter with them on a positive note by giving them a treat. Another thing is that rats enjoy likable treats like yogurt and baby food, and it can help them to bond with you if you give them the treats off your fingers, also because they can't run away with the treat. I'm sure that they'll learn to at enjoy your company eventually :) Good luck!
@@ScreamQueen9 I use both because occasionally I see my rats go to the bowls and take little baths, it's so cute the way they wash their faces. 😂 They also enjoy drinking the water by scooping it up in their little hands, so cute. 😊
Weird, I didn't get the notification for this video, even though I have the bell on. Do your job TH-cam. 😑 I just got done with spot cleaning my boys' cage though lol. Jasper stepped in poop this morning and literally walked over everything. 😭😂
First! love your channel. I just got two baby rats and 8 don’t know what I would do if you weren’t there to guide me through it. Thank you so much. I have one video request. Could you react to rat cages again I would love to send my cage in and have you look at it? I hope you see this!
Thanks so much for this video! i don’t have the same cage but i have been needing a good way to spot clean. Your channel is always so helpful, i just got my rats 2 weeks ago and your channel has really helped. One question, do your rats tend to sneeze constantly? One of my rats has not stopped sneezing for the past 3 days, should i be worried? i’d love to know!
Mine will occasionally go through phases of sneezing when they’ve had any stress or had slight changes. As long as they don’t have any other symptoms I usually leave them to it unless it persists for a long time or gets worse
It might be stress, it has been going on for a few days but she does these weird squeaking sound like a mix of maybe a cough and a sneeze. I have been keeping an eye on her and if it gets worse I will take her to the local vet.
Anyone knows if using coconut soap is good for this spot cleaning or for cleaning their litter boxes? It's a type of neultral soap, has a very light smell, it's usually 100% natural. I also heard you can mix water and vinegar for a deep cleaning all over the cage, but I read somewhere that hats don't like the smell of vinegar. Can I clean the pee spots with just a damp cloth or paper towel? I'm planning on getting two females in a few months and I want to make sure I give them a healthy and happy life, but I'm afraid I'd use something that can make them sick since they are so delicate 😢 Firt time rat-mom!
Hi Emi!
A lot of items will come with hooks and strings so you can hang from the top of the cage or the side, sorry if that wasn't the exact question. For me personally I think at least 3-4 inches of bedding is fine but you might want to have a dig box for them. I dont think you really need to have a wheel, I put one in my rats cage and they did not use it. If your rats will use it then that's great but you will need a pretty large wheel! I hope this is all the correct answers! Good luck with your rats!

I just had a question for you about my two male rats who are about a year old now, I have been seeing some red liquid around there eyes and nose so I took them to the vet to get that checked out and they told me that they most likely have a respiratory infection so they gave me some medication to give them, but the red liquid still comes back. hi emi! i wanted to comment this on another video of yours (where to get pet rats) , but it was very old, and i didn’t think i would get any answers from anyone, so sorry if this is a bit random.. what do you think about buying rat *supplies* from chain pet stores? i would never get rats from a chain pet store like petco, but for me it’s more accessible to but from petco. could i get some context on it? i basically want to know if it’s okay or not lol :/ thanks!
It’s okay but I avoid it, they’re usually over priced, not that suitable and for me if I’m avoiding buying animals from a chain store because they’re unethical I don’t want to support them financially in other ways. Almost everything in a big store you can find online instead, but if you can’t, one little purchase won’t hurt ☺️

Non scented baby wipes, or just tissue
where is that bowl from it's gorgeous!!
Rat rations!
Another informative yet entertaining video!
wait are rats nocturnal or do they just sleep most of the time? sorry if this is a dumb question
I have so many questions because I think I might get two rats in 2-3 years. How do you connect items to the cage, and do you need 6-10 inches of bedding Also, do rats need wheels for energy and where do you get your cage hopefully somebody replies with the correct answers?
this was marketed for emi but can you reply bc idk
another lovely chill video emi, I like to put them on in background when I'm making notes or colouring 💛
how do you go about keeping wooden items clean ? especially the naturalistic ones you'd be less likely to paint ?
All the wooden items I can get varnished to stop pee soaking in but when they get particularly bad I’ll rise them in the shower, spray them with white vinegar and then pop them outside in the sun to dry ☺️
@@Emiology thanks ! can you recommend a varnish that's safe if chewed on ?
@@Emiology hiya what do you have in their dig box if i can ask
Is there any video that she shows what safe animal products she uses?
your setup is so cute ! What do u use to whipe down the cage ?🙈
Usually just tissue and pet disinfectant, when I do a proper deep clean of it I’ll use a cloth and just wash it
Someone Plz Help!!
Hey what should i do if one my female mice bites the other ear off another one my female mice
i have a 10 gallon
i feed them daily and they have water constantly
and i also play with them for 10-20 minutes a day
but today i saw that one had its ear chewed off!
is it stress?
is it one just trying to show dominance
should i get a bigger home ( i have 3 in there all female)
also what should i do to heal a mouse with its ear chewed off because all the internet is showing me is “mouse with human ear”
How did you get the tray for the bottom?
What did u put in their water???
I feel silly asking this because I don't know if I just missed this, but what are you using to clean your cage? I know in a previous vid you mentioned using a vinegar-water mix and baby wipes, but I was curious if that's still the case
50% white vinegar and 50% water solution, sometimes I will use a pet safe spray though as the vinegar doesn’t always make the room smell great 🤢 and either tissue or non scented wipes
Where did you get your Sputnik from please? I would love one this colour 😍😊
Rat warehouse I think!
Thank you 😊
Good video but i have a question i recently got a baby rat he's like 1 month old and i wannna put him with my adult rat is that a bad idea?
Yes, adult rats can easily kill a baby that young. They need to have same age company at their age otherwise it messes up the development, but also need to be at least 8 weeks old and 18-200g roughly before being introduced 🙂
Hi Emi I spotted you put supplements in their water, I was wondering is this something you would advise doing for ratties of any age? My lasses are 1 yo now, but I've never given them supplements
I’d say for older rats it’s more beneficial than for younger ones, but i can’t imagine it’s bad to do it for rats of any age. Up to you really!
Again tysm!
That’s good! Being able to give them toys and enrichment while they’re alive is way more ethical than mass bred feeders
sorry for the late comment but what spray do you use to disinfect things with? i'm so worried about using anything scented and upsetting their respiratory systems!
1/2 water 1/2 white distilled vinegar is always good for deep cleaning!
@@jayvon96 thank you so much!!
emi, I cleaned the rat cage out yesterday, and today i come in for some normal interacting, and I see some poo scattered around the cage and not in the litterbox, i suspect it was just one of them doing this but. Up until now i have NEVER seen a poo outside of the box since they were fully trained, they arent old, only a year and a month. Is this a heslth issue? or a behavioural one? What happened? I think its only one rat because there is a lot of poo in the litter box, and some outside.
What do you use to disinfect it?
EARLY I LOVE YOU SO MUCH
Hi emiology...
I'm sure that they'll learn to at enjoy your company eventually :) Good luck!
i deep clean my cage once a week (3 girl rats) 😭 is that too often?
I'm sure you've mentioned but why do you prefer water bowls to water bottles for them?
I have both, but water bottles are harder to clean and more difficult for them to get a long drink from
@@Emiology gotcha! 😊
@@ScreamQueen9 I use both because occasionally I see my rats go to the bowls and take little baths, it's so cute the way they wash their faces. 😂 They also enjoy drinking the water by scooping it up in their little hands, so cute. 😊
What hay do you feed your rats or use for nesting?
Just any dust extracted one!
@@Emiology Ok thank you! I love your rats and watching your videos. I have 5 rats myself and they are all super sweet!
Weird, I didn't get the notification for this video, even though I have the bell on. Do your job TH-cam. 😑
I just got done with spot cleaning my boys' cage though lol. Jasper stepped in poop this morning and literally walked over everything. 😭😂
TH-cam honestly sucks most of the time
Could someone explain toilet roll, is that simply for them to have fun shredding it?
Yep
@@Emiology oooh my boys will thank you later 🐀🐀
How do you know if they using the litter tray
They won’t be pooping in other places in the cage
First! love your channel. I just got two baby rats and 8 don’t know what I would do if you weren’t there to guide me through it. Thank you so much. I have one video request. Could you react to rat cages again I would love to send my cage in and have you look at it? I hope you see this!
What cage is this?
What do u wipe with?!?!?!
She uses non scented baby wipes, or just tissue (she replied to others)
My rats nap in the litter tray too 😂
Where is the video on the plastic sides at the bottom please🥺

Hi Emi!
A lot of items will come with hooks and strings so you can hang from the top of the cage or the side, sorry if that wasn't the exact question. For me personally I think at least 3-4 inches of bedding is fine but you might want to have a dig box for them. I dont think you really need to have a wheel, I put one in my rats cage and they did not use it. If your rats will use it then that's great but you will need a pretty large wheel! I hope this is all the correct answers! Good luck with your rats!

You are so welcome! If you have anymore questions feel free to ask I would love to help!

Hi Emi! I love your videos so much they are so helpful to me! I just had a question for you about my two male rats who are about a year old now, I have been seeing some red liquid around there eyes and nose so I took them to the vet to get that checked out and they told me that they most likely have a respiratory infection so they gave me some medication to give them, but the red liquid still comes back. I don't know if your rats have had this problem before that is why I wanted to ask you and see your point of view. I am going to get some more medication for them soon but I don't think it's helping. I know you are probably busy with other comments but it would be super helpful to me if you could respond! Thank you so much for all of your helpful videos!🐀❤

hi i know your busy and don't have time to respond to my comment about this but do you have any advice about how to make my rat stop biting me? if you do please comment on this and tell me
thank you for your time.
hi emi! i wanted to comment this on another video of yours (where to get pet rats) , but it was very old, and i didn’t think i would get any answers from anyone, so sorry if this is a bit random..
what do you think about buying rat *supplies* from chain pet stores? i would never get rats from a chain pet store like petco, but for me it’s more accessible to but from petco. could i get some context on it? i basically want to know if it’s okay or not lol :/
thanks!
also yes i know you’re not the deciding force on rats or something but if you could give your thoughts on it it would be helpful :)
@@Emiology thanks so much! i think i’ll try to buy most stuff online, but i won’t stress over one stray purchase at petco every once and a while (as long as it’s not ratties or other pets) :)
Please help! I just got my rats about 2 months ago. I feed a seed mix and low sugar cereal as treats and oxbow as my main diet. They have 2 water bowls that I clean and refill daily. My rats are healthy, social, friendly, and everything I could ever ask for in a pet. Except they really, really stink! I have had a hamster and have kept mice in large groups (7 or 8) for 5 years now. I am not new to rodents. I have 3 males in a cage just like yours. I have to spot clean daily and deep clean weekly. They have 2 hrs free roaming time daily. They use their litter box marvelously! Like far better than I ever expected them to. Idk what to do about the smell. I would love to continue to own rats forever, but my husband really doesn't like the smell.
What bedding do you use?
@@Emiology i use recycled paper pellet bedding for the 2 litter boxes and aspen and timothy hay in the bottom. They also have a sputnik and a wicker basket at the top of the cage that they like to pee in. I line those with paper towels and change them daily when I put in fresh water. Thank you so much for replying!
I’m so happy i’m not the only one that just moves their rats when cleaning, i get SO annoyed when they keep trying to get back into the cage or somewhere that needs to be cleaned. So frustrating 😭😭
you have most likely said this in another video but is it bad for rats to soak up urine with their bodies? you acted as though it was casual and i know bathing rats is not recommended, so i was just wondering.
Longer term for elderly rats it can be if they can’t move to clean themselves but most rats just groom it off
What... I thought I had to deep clean every week. I have 6 cages so I was really struggling.
