I live in L. A. Would be nice if you could indicate which direction you're traveling, would make it easier to identify landmarks. Otherwise, great video. Thanx.
The Frogmen movie was released on June 29, 1951 and the second feature, Fugitive Lady, 8 May 1950 (4:12). Also there are a number of 1949 style Ford's evident in the video. It would appear filming took place in the very early 50's, not the 40's.
You are correct. One of the restaurants on the film is called the Flying Saucer. Ate there often as a young kid. It opened sometime in the 50’s. Was not there in the 40’s.
@@SunriseLAW No; I, for one, do not desire to be young again. I simply wish for a return to reverence for beauty and decorum, a time when criminals were not coddled and good, law-abiding citizens were not persecuted and prosecuted. This topsy-turvy age in which we live is a harbinger of hell.
May Co building still exists, becoming the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum. El Ray Theater is still there for bands, music. My wife worked for John Van de Camp when he was the Attorney General. We live two blocks south of Wilshire Blvd, a few minutes away from The Miracle Mile.
This is in the early 50's, as I can see 1951-1955 California plates, gotta be 1951, I don't see any yellow '52 metal tags on the bottom right corner of the 1951 license plates.

Good old LA. Some things never get old. Drivers cutting you off making a left turn with oncoming traffic. Not maintaining safe distance. Not signaling... A jaywalking lady. The presence of annoying no parking signs. La Brea Tar Pits still there. The bus line still running to this day (20 and 720). Some buildings look familiar. Everyone so gorgeous, very nicely dressed!
I'm glad that the La Brea tar pits didn't go anywhere! The last time I saw them, they were in a small fenced off area In a empty field! I would like to see them again for my bucket list!

6:12 this film was made sometime after 1951. If you look at the Marquee in the movie theater, it proclaims that it's showing a movie called The frogman starring Dana Andrews and Richard Widmark. That movie was released in 1951. (⊙︿⊙✿)
$795 for a bomb shelter...jeez. lol Cool seeing brands that are still around today. -Fritos, now Frito-Lay -Standard , Inc. aka Standard Oil aka BP. -Schlitz Beer -Arthur Murray -Bank of America -Shell
Buildings had such character back then. I don't hate modern architecture, but we've lost way too many of these old historic buildings to new developments.
I ran into (literally) Edward G. Robinson at a coffee shop in the early '60s - he was going in, I was coming out and I didn't see him at first (very short).
The thumbnail deceived me once again. I thought by the end of this we would see a comparison (before and after) or even side by side would be nice, or if you have time, fade in and out...
1:54... the only thing that could preserve you and your family from potential doom was marketed as a product for sale. (Bomb Shelter billboard left side of frame) For the low cost of $795. The world was actually dangerous then, not that it still isn't. Where the concern of violence wasn't just an average guy who went ballistic. It was the thought that any portion of a country's population that may be rooting for your extinction and actually having the means to potentially do so.
Notice how everyone was dressed so nicely, even during the weekends. No, faded and torn jeans. No tats and weaves. Yes, that's how it used to be; modest but dressy.
I think that was made in the early 50s seen a few 50 and could of sworn a 53 Chevy how cool the streets where clean no bums shitting on side walks people dressed nice and had class man those days a long gone never to return so sad how the United States has turned into a shit hole some places
We loved the Miracle Mile, starting with the fabulous Carnation creamery near Highland Avenue. Hand-packed gourmet ice creams to die for! Driving west, Ohrbachs was one of our favorite clothing stores. It was the place to buy really great European designer knockoffs. I had loads of them in college. Hollywood stars also wore a lot of them and fooled people into believing they were crazy-expensive originals.
Normally love your stuff. But the balloons with the info is deeply annoying and rather amateurish. But what's worse is the plonk /plink sound, that accompanies them. Instead of relaxing and watching, I'm tense, waiting for the noise..... 😞
That was the huge flaw - it was wonderful IF you were yt. If only we could go back minus the Jim Crowe. We truly would be as close to Heaven on Earth as you could get
@@michaelbenardo5695 of course it is, but when you look at old films like this, it is obvious that there is a much higher percentage of very overweight and obese people now,. It's the chemically toxic garbage in all of the highly processed foods we are subjected to.
Remember when the streets of California used to be clean. Seems like another lifetime ago.
Exactly and like another planet or dimension
No one had on a baseball cap and pants way down pass the A## area !! Oh I wish we can go back hust for few days 😔

Interesting. Some of the video is definitely from the 1940s. But it’s possible some is from the 1950s. Thanks for watching

I agree ...many early '50s models
This video is from 1951. You can tell by the name of movie playing at the El Rey Theatre, "Fugitive Lady" from 1951.
So cool to see the 1940s and 1950s like this. It was a magical time in the golden state.
The El Rey theater at 6:12 is showing "The Frogmen" which was released in 1951.
I wanna go back. I hate the way things are now.
Sometimes I think the same thing. Seems like we live on another planet at this point

This video in from the early 50’s. Some of the restaurants shown were not open in the 40’s. Great video and great memories.
1951 most likely, judging by The Frogmen playing in one of the theaters.
I was about 4 or 5 when this was filmed. Later in life, I worked at Wilshire & Rimpau for 16 years.
Very cool.
love this type of videos l was born in 1950 never be this good again ever ty who ever posted this
Are used to drive down Wilshire every day back in 1947. Did that for 10 years. I remember it well. The good all days! 😀

At 6:13 a movie theater shows the movie The Frogmen. That was in 1951 according to IMD.

This is actually 1951 or 1952.........but still fun to watch.

This was the early 1950s. There are a few 1951 Chevrolets in this film. Very cool nonetheless.
A '51 Ford too.
What year is this clip? I saw one store advertising televisions
not sure if I like it or love it 😍
NEWEST CARS SEEN, THIS FILM, 1951 FORD, CHEVY, OLDS, BUICK, CADILLAC, STUDEBAKER, PACKARD, MERCURY !
We're these films made for rear projection?
L..A. was so clean back then😮😅

The newest model cars are 1951s. It looks like 1951.
Look clean and safe.. don’t see any homeless people
