    I would suggest that you spray the interior with a suitable paint to seal it. The chicken poop will eat through that wood really fast. I would also suggest that you put some metal flashing around the outside of the coop because rats will invade it very quickly and can chew through the wood in a night they are gonna go for the chickens and their feed. There are also some pneumatic door or window openers that you can buy for a greenhouse that will automatically vent the coop if it gets too hot.

    The biggest purpose for those bars is to give the chickens somewhere to land so that they can get into the nesting boxes easier. Most peopel use the folding landing bar to keep the chickens from roosting on the landing bars (and making a huge mess in the boxes. Some folks use the folding bars on the nesting boxes to keep the hens or pullets out of them. They may begin using it as a resting spot as opposed to for laying, which means they will poop etc. in there. The bar is then used to teach them to get in and out of the nesting box, not for a roosting or a sleeping area.

    Put your roost on hinges so that it will raise to clean under.. learned this the hard way.. also you can use sand for bedding which they will also pick the little rocks out of for their gizzard to help grind food... and easy to clean you can get a shovel sized kitty litter scoop off amazon. Makes life easier

    I'd do the windows now. They help heat in the winter, and they need the light to do chicken things. Oh, also, pro tip? They slow down eating in winter, so artificial light helps them stay up longer to eat more to lay more.

    I know it’s kind of too late but I recommend putting linoleum on the floor of the coop because it makes it really easy to wipe the poop away and you can bleach it. I have like 60 chickens and ducks so I’m not talking out of my ass 😂

    Hey flair, totally thought of a great idea. use the back of the upper level for storage and the front upper level as the night entrance. I'm not sure if it's too tall or not but they could use that little door up top to fly in to the barn at night so no predators can get in

    For chickens to lay eggs at the maximum they need 14 to 15 hours of sunlight a day, when you coop them you have to make artificial sunlight, you're going to need a few light bulbs and a timer, otherwise if your chickens are in the dark they're going to quit laying and you're going to have a hard time getting them started again.

  • @mezenman

    I think you need venting. When winter comes I believe fresh air is more important than heat. I have done 2 winters with my birds and never gave them heat. I live on the Wisconsin Illinois border. First year they were outside in a chickshaw. I surround it with one layer of hay bales. No problems. Last year they went in our big barn. Again no heat and no deaths. Kept the turkeys outside too with no heat. Great video.

  • @Fun.Guy.Forager
    @Fun.Guy.Forager ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This was awesome. Definitely a window for ventilation not only for you and the smell but fresh air Incase all those chickens overheat the coop. I would have put some waterproof paint down on the floor and a quarter way on the walls for moisture control. Auto door should been higher with a ramp for protection of critters, cold drafts across the floor and snow. Security camera inside the corner so you can check on them live from your phone and may add some camera rolls to your videos. Sign above the chicken door that says BJ's hole. More swings LOL make your own. Mirrors and kids toys dangling to keep them from fighting or killing each other. Make your own Metal kabob skewers for hanging fruit and lettuce/cabbage to eat. I'd use the metal heating plates looks safer.

    Harden your chickens off. It gets 20 below here in Alaska and chickens do fine in a well ventilated unheated coop.
    Heat lamps and heaters burn down coops and waist electricity.
    Only thing I'd do is widen their rooster bars. Exposed feet get frost bite. 2x4 flat works best. Warmers in water but no water in coop. To much humidity. Definitely windows and keep one open a bit all winter for good ventilation.
    If you want to keep them laying put a light on a timer. Nothing much, Christmas lights work good. Min 12 hrs of light or give them a rest in laying over winter. It's better for the birds in the long run.
    How we roll up here anyway 😉

  • @Hookah268
    @Hookah268 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Need windows for light right now. Need very good ventilation (moisture control), even in the winter. Might want to consider painting floor with deck paint, making it less likely to absorb any moisture. You should try raising the soldier flies. Would make good content. Birds are definately gonna roost in the rafters.

    If it's not too late, lol, I'm not done watching, but you should buy a piece of rolled vinyl flooring for the floor of the coop. It glues down and will protect the plywood/osb wood floor from the chicken waste. It will make clean up a breeze

    Put linoleum under your roosting area, and then PDZ horse stall refresher. You can scoop their poop/mess out easier (it’s almost like cat litter) and it eliminates ammonia odor. This was a game changer for cleaning after our flock.

    I think having the barn on the side of the road is a good idea because you just seen them in the trees so that means they have to walk through where the animals are and it gives them a chance to pick up all the flyer larvae what you bought them for you are basically forcing them to use more land than what they normally would which is good cuz it gives them more opportunities for food AKA fly larvae

    Good video guys. I think you should add a skylight and a couple of low watt lights(like night-lights) inside the chicken condominium, if it is too dark inside they will not want to go in.
    A small solar-powered intake/exhaust fan on the inside of one of the vents near the peak of the roof to improve the air flow would probably also help improve the air quality inside.
    Just a couple of ideas to improve the comfort level for the chickens👍🤠‼

    Egg output is determined by hours of light. You will need lights on a timer in the coup for them to go in the evening, say till 9pm. Plus it will help coax them in during the day to lay eggs in the nesting boxes. Air circulation will help keep ammonia from waste low as well

    They need light. Windows, best would louver style with a crank. Rv type window. For winter I would suggest a solar dusk to dawn light that has a wire to have the solar panel outside and light inside. You might have to hide the other coops to have them only using the one. The nesting box is usually put the bars up at night to prevent roosting and back down in the morning. They will lay eggs in the morning so when you collect, put them back up for evening. Good luck

    @Flair hey there bud, my sister in law raised her own bunch as well and they too ordered a huge shed to be delivered. She put electricity to her coup; and put in heating lamps but also an old heated blanket that my wife was going to donate. My sister in law noticed a huge draft due to the wind/snow and the direction the door faced when she opened it. So her boyfriend put in 2 half walls mayne 3-4ft just to protect the chickens a bit from the wind etc when she opened the doors to collect eggs and behind them is where she laid the blanket, gave them a warm zone. Shes done it the past 5 yrs with many chickens and so far so good. Oh also she put weather stripping around the doors to help keep the cold out. The door you put in is fantastic, but can it be forced and lifted???? Because raccoons will rip off a trash can lid, so im hoping that door cant be lifted. You may have to put a piece of wood nailed to the shed to ensure it stays shut. Also double check your doors that they cant be pryed a bit and they cant squeeze in because she had that problem too, until her boyfriend adjusted it and made a tighter seal. As always I am loving the videos, and cant wait for deer hunting, heck any hunting really. You guys take care of yourselves and we will catch you all on the next video.

    you should spray wood sealer so the wood dose rot away with the cleaning and helps prevent the shit from sticking. and put some attic vents for air circulation. and some solar light too so you can see when tour inside.

    You should But one or two little fans in the roof to help keep the chicken dust down. It will also add a small air flow during the hot days so the chickens don't overheat.

    So I’ve trained my chickens to the sounds of the mealworms. Whether its the bag or a bucket. If you shake it every time you feed it to them, they will then run every time they hear it. It’ll make gathering them easier

    We put plastic down then the cedar shavings on top. When it's time to change grab a corner fold to center and throw in the garbage. Super quick and a time saver.
    Give it a try.

    Should build a wall divider and use it for two species of birds cut in a second door or build a door on the middle wall divider

    Build some plywood skirting on the bottom like 12” to 16” tall with 2x6 angled downwards between the studs
    It’ll keep the manure and shavings out between the studs making it easier to clean

    I think you need to create a live steam from inside the new coop. We need to see old BJ with his ladies. Think BeekCake Construction LLC needs to add a windows in the new coop as well.

  • @DMVWhiskerKing

    Man love the new chicken coop. You should but some pipe wall U brackets/pipe straps and few long wood dowel rods across from the top of the ladders. You put them all the way across . At least two . First a bit lower at the top step of your ladders .That ones a foot out from the other higher so they can jump up to the roost above the ladder . Which should make it high enough to clean under everything still . But give them two larger roost and access above as well . And should be pretty cheap too 🤴🏼🤘🏻 So knew you was gonna buy that bunker/ missile silo 👌🏻. Keep up the amazing content as always.

    I would def add a couple vents that you can slide close for winter but so there’s more air in there and maybe just a little light wouldn’t be hard to run electric out there from the shop

    Do not give heat. Let them acclimate to the temps you have. I never heat the coop in the winter in Michigan, and never loose a bird to cold. If you give them heat they will always need it. Most breeds are hearty, and with 50 chickens they will provide enough heat for themselves. Next time you want to catch them all, wait till dusk. They wont run if they are roosted.

    I would have put a thick coat of paint on the floor so that their moisture doesn't get into the wood and rot it. Cool house for the chicks. lol.

    Just a Tip: if you put down linolium under the Roots the 💩 will come off easier and will protect your Wood.
    The roosting bars on the nest boxes are to close at night so they don't sleep and 💩 in the boxes.

    I would recommend putting some oyster shells for when u keep them in along with rocks(small gravel sized)and a sand box if you are keeping them in the LOVE sand box’s that we’re they get clean and when they, chicken eat rocks when free range to help break up there food. And oyster shells help a lot in to make them produce a lot of eggs It help with the calcium intake(the outside of shell).(mealworms,larva,and other bugs boost egg production,along with scratch grains) I have 100 something chicken so I’m not just saying that! 😂

    You should get like the rubber horse mats at tractor supply to line the floor so it keeps the floor longer. Then you can pull the mats out every so often and hose them down.

    You can build a box and put a fan in a wall to air it out and all you’d have to do is make a wood flap with insulation to winterize the vent

  • @barryammerman6317
    @barryammerman6317 ปีที่แล้ว

    You need to put lighting too keep the chickens laying in the winter. 16 hours of light. Lights come on at dusk and off early morning.

  • @Alexsmoak808
    @Alexsmoak808 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sky light window, that can also be opened as a vent. (Idk what its called)
    Then more 6-8" vent holes along the top of the wall. Like houses have. W steel mesh. Can cap it in winter if needed.

  • @davewenners6722

    get a diesel heater. you should insulate the walls and cover them with some metal, go from the wall into the floor. That should help save the floor edges

    Put something under the water to catch any water so it does not ruin the floor. a piece of sheet linoleum under the roosting section to make clean up easy.

  • @felicityhollis4613
    @felicityhollis4613 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Should have put linoleum down first, easier to clean. Also chickens like large areas to perch on. Their feet aren't like regular birds. They would like a 4in wide roost to feel good while they sleep

  • @aarond4821

    I'd definitely put at least one window in for ventilation purposes. You'll enjoy it when it comes time to clean it out.
