    Would you mind describing your test procedure for air quality? Wirecutter's review uses quite reliable instrumentation in what seems like fairly well controlled test conditions, and their results for the Molekule are abysmal.
    Molekule themselves seem to avoid any industry standards like CADR, pretty bad sign. They are misleading people really badly.

      Sure thing.
      We use an electronic air quality measuring device (amzn.to/2PwbATg) to monitor the air quality index, PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, and formaldehyde.
      We start by taking a baseline measurement of air quality in our test room with the door closed. The bedroom is 12'x12' and is part of my family's home. Our home is located in Phoenix, Arizona. As a lived in home it's subject to normal particulates, hair, dust, dogs, bacteria, viruses, etc.
      Once we have a baseline we turn the unit on the highest setting, close the door, and let it clean the air for 1 hour.
      Then we come back in the room, turn the unit off, and use our electronic air quality measuring device to take a measurement. We then compare that to our baseline data.
      We complete the same process and use the same equipment for all air purifiers we've tested.
      In our view, this method strikes the right balance of closed test, while still being reflective of what a purifier might encounter in a normal home. We don't add extra particulates to the air (however, I do turn off all other air purifiers in our house several hours before we run the test, so we can get a high enough particulate count to see if it's able to reduce particulates compared to the baseline).
      Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Good review.
    Molekule doesn’t adjust fan speed on auto mode with air quality. The Molekule is not capable of monitoring air quality. It only changes speed depending on the room information you set at the start.
    Connection issues plague the Molekule and it hasn’t gotten any better with the latest firmware update unfortunately.

    The Dyson (like any fan!) do not push out cool air, unless the air in the room is already cool. It does not actively cool the air, because it is not an airco. The way it can cool the individual person is through passive cooling, meaning the heat radiating from the body (through sweat or just from the skin out) is swept away with the wind caused by the airflow of the fan.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More or less, that's it.
      04 generation models generally have higher air flow
      DP / TP aside from form factor differences have the same specs / hardware
      HP adds heating
      I think for most consumers it's a choice between the DP04 and TP04. If you want the heat then of course go HP04. If you find a screaming deal on it the TP02 is also a good pickup due to its high air flow (similar to that of the 04 generation). Pick between those 4, imo.

    I would really like to see what the air quality index is after running for 3 hours and then at 24 hours and then at 48 hours. I think another review I watched said the molekule recommended to boost clean the air for 3 hours when first starting. And according to the molekule’s claims the regular hepa and carbon filter do well initially but then over time start letting particles loose into the air.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Unfortunately, we don't have the Molekule any more (it was on loan from a friend of Modern Castle), so we cannot re-run the tests (at least not tonight).
      It's possible there would be an improvement in performance, but I am doubtful it would be dramatic.
      We've tested a litany of HEPA, carbon, and photo catalytic purifiers over the last 6 months. During our initial tests we ran much longer tests at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours. Eventually we decided on a 1 hour test because we just weren't seeing significant changes in the longer tests vs. the 1 hourt test in the vast vast majority of units we tested.
      Typically, the units quickly reached their maximum purification level and then would maintain that level for time after 1 hour.
      In any case, I would still say Molekule's performance was great. Yes, Dyson was a bit better, but still...achieving 0.6 PM2.5 is great.
      Regarding your other point on HEPA filters eventually having worse performance...that's a good point. So I decided to run a test tonight to find out.
      I ran our Rabbit Air MinusA2 on the highest setting for 1 hour in our test room (full review here - moderncastle.com/rabbit-air-minusa2-review/). We've had the MinusA2 almost 6 months and it has been running every day during that time.
      Here's data:
      Starting: PM2.5 = 1.5, PM10 = 2.5, Particles per liter = 149
      After 1 Hour: PM2.5 = 0.2, PM10 = 0.2, Particles per liter = 19
      Original 1 Hour Test: PM2.5 = 0.1, PM10 = 0.1, Particles per liter = 9
      So, it's definitely higher, but still functional identical, in my opinion. This isn't to say there is no validity to Molekule's claim, but at least based on the initial test with our Rabbit Air we didn't see those results.
      Let me know if you have any other questions.

    I’m a couple of years late to the party but just wanted to say how helpful this video review was. I did watch the wire cutter review of the Molekule that basically said it was useless but there were other reports I read that indicated wire cutter couldn’t quite measure the PECO tech that Molekule uses. Most of its testing was HEPA.
    I’m not against new tech but the problem is that most of the reporting about PECO seems to be coming out of Molekule themselves. One of their bigger claims is that PECO kills the particulates that are caught whereas HEPA will only capture it.
    To the extent that is true, the potential problem with HEPA (like Dyson) is that mold can grow in the filter and that can be re-released into the air. No bueno. And i think Molekule uses this as a selling point. Which is cool.
    But re-release of mold really only happens if you just leave a dusty old HEPA filter on there and cheap out and “clean” it and try to reuse it like refilling ink tanks for your ink jet printer. If you keep to the filter replacement schedule that Dyson recommends, yes, there’s a potential for mold to grow inside the Dyson but in the filter it will remain. Swap out of a new filter when instructed and you’ll be good to go.
    i ordered the TP06 (not worried about formaldehyde, really. but only the TP06 connects to Siri).

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment!
      I agree, I think Molekule's views regarding destruction vs. capture are overstated. The idea that HEPA is not effective is just misleading. HEPA has been the standard for 50 years because it's so effective.
      In any case, whether the particulates are destroyed or captured isn't as important, in my view. Both the Molekule and Dyson performed well in our particulate removal tests.

    • @srirachahero4679
      @srirachahero4679 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModernCastle Did you happen to see what wire cutter saw with Molekule?
      They said when in “dark” mode, all the lights, including the blue PECO lamp would turn off and the only filter in effect is the pre-filter.
      If that’s true, that’s a major issue.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@srirachahero4679 I didn't read / watch the Wirecutter review. But that does make sense. PECO works through light activation. If there's no light, no filtration.
      In any case, that does make the sleep mode / dark mode not great.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1) Basically, it's a fan. That's what Dyson considers cooling. It's not an AC. It only cools in that it creates air flow in the room (which is also how it purifiers the air)
      2) You don't have to. It includes a remote control. However, the app does provide additional functionality.

I'm on the hunt for the most strongest purifier and if there is none I'm looking for a pair of purifiers that can actually clean 1000sq ft. The true difference of the Molekule isnt so much of the particle removal, but the destruction of harmful pollutants, although, I dont know if that destruction will allow particles to get through, I dont know how thier science works, but that's the theory anyway. So instead of trapping mold, it destroys it permanently.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is indeed the idea at least.
      Though I'm not really sure that it matters whether particles are trapped or destroyed, either way, they are no longer in the air. In my view, that's functionally the same. Especially as both Molekule's PECO filter and HEPA filters need to be periodically replaced.

    • @ModernCastle

      It's a fan. It blows air at higher speeds through it that can be directed through oscillation.
