I have the same bike. 1987 dual carb. It’s like riding a couch. All day do anything. Magnesium parts. I tell my kids they don’t make them bulletproof like this anymore.
@michaelxr Hi. Did you ever find that the dual carbs were an issue? I don't know why, but the thought of dual carbs on a dirt bike makes me nervous. Not sure why… I ride street bikes that have multiple carburetors all day long. Just seems weird to me to have dual carbs on a 600 or 650 cc single cylinder. Thoughts? Thanks.
@@ar2043 No issues with the carbs. There's a progressive linkage between them that really isn't adjustable without bending linkages. The primary carb opens about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, then the second carb starts to open. As you continue to open the throttle, the second carb ends up opening fully at the same time the primary carb is fully open. Mine is jetting correctly and they work really well. Can idle around all day, crisp off idle rev, no bog, and then when you need power, that second carb really lets it breathe. The only thing I've had a little issue with is the orings on the transfer tube between carbs will dry up a little after sitting and drip some fuel until they heat up.
Wow! That is fantastic information. Sounds like Honda almost knew what they were doing… 😂😂😂 Glad to hear that they have a pretty fine set-up there… Again, great information. Thank you so much for the detailed response. 🙏👍👍👍
Ken & the Family keeping dirt bike love alive!! what a beautiful morning out here in Eastern Connecticut
The ol faithful XR600RS they never get old for me. I've owned several bikes overs the years. But nothing compared with the fun of the XR.
Yea, that's a sick bike. Good old days.... I'm running a glorified xr600r (xr650l) turned into a 90% off-road machine lightened up, emissions taken off, plastic tank etc. Etc. Xr's are great.
Привет из России с КМВ! Во это "машина" просто БОМБА! 1987 года, а как моторчик работает. Мечта молодости... Да и сейчас бы не отказался.
my first bike was a XR 350 and it was my favorite bike I wish I still had it. this also reminds me of my youth and brings back great memories. take care from USA brother!
I had a 1987 XR600R, mine was red white and blue.. got it new, great bike, thumper.. I installed after market Supertrap muffler on it , it had the removable discs, all made of aluminum, and I put the aluminum skid plate on mine to. Mine had the drum rear brakes. When I got it it was tough to start, after looking into the issue, I was told to install a larger idle jet? I upped it by 2 numbers and than it started easy. I miss dirt bikes, and street bikes, great times.
Or open the pilot jet a couple turns, they come lean to pass the sniffer test lol. I’m looking at an 87’ XL600 the red white and blue is beautiful and the gold rims, it screams 80’s.
@@sevendyseven4090 no, there’s usually a brass cap covering it, carefully remove that and the pilot is under that, go about 21/2 turns out 👍 they lean them out to pass the sniffer when imported so they are pretty choked off stock.
@@sevendyseven4090 I could be talking about an obsolete feature now but the pilot screw controls the fuel mixture from idle to wide open but it’s by small increments, after 3 turns out or open, there’s no further changes. If a bike is hard to start or has a stumble especially off the bottom, that will help more times than not. Maybe I’m calling it the wrong part but we always called it the pilot screw. Bottom of the carb, furthest forward. 21/2-3 out max.
@@sevendyseven4090 it’s the pilot fuel screw BTW
@@sevendyseven4090 yes bingo. Then you have the idle and main jets. They are becoming a lost art but I can still tune a rack of 4 and synch em no sweat.
Shawn is gonna be smiling down on You and Your Team of Mechanics, and Joe is gonna be happy. I would love to own this bike. Would be fun to ride on around town. Y'all made it beautiful. It's gonna make somebody very happy. ML&R.
Una moto clásica q jamas va pasar de moda, por más q no tenga tecnología, pero tiene una impronta de aquella época q solo los q manejaron esta moto con mucho torque lo saben, en fin, mí nombre es Xavier, saludos desde ARGENTINA.....................
Ive been on course with Scott Summers back in the day at several National Hare Scrambles and G.P.s.
It was still called Hare Scrambling back then.
A two wheel tractor.
I badly miss my XR600 Supermoto…. Made me look like a wheelie king, it was too easy! 2nd gear and roll it on, she comes right up…
Thumper mania !!!! Thank you Ken! 2:41
It reminds me so much of the Kawasaki KDX 200 a lot of it is that back Fender but this is one of those the fun never stops Kind Of bikes one of the greatest Enduros ever if not the greatest that KLR 650 Kawasaki is a bad man you've had both this will make anybody happy💪🏻💪🏻💚👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇲🥰✌🏼
Mr casteen can fettle these to perfection 👌
The ultimate wheelie machine! Very nice bike Ken 👍
I reckon you could ride this thing all the way to Australia
We all ran Supertraps down in the Pine Barrens. We owned the sand pits🤣.
Greetings from Humungus.

Man I got a 83 xl600r that’s being refreshed I can’t wait til it’s done.
@danrunnheim1062 that’s what mine is. I bought it blown up and in need of fenders and lot of tlc. But should be decent bike when it’s finished. Hopefully
Thanks the video. Ronnie beautiful adoral 1987 Honda xr600 absolutely gorgeous machine right there, especially for its year. It's amazing that bike was in championships. What a machine Thank you so much! Kaplan cycles
Not bike related but it's pretty badass that one of your boys has the same name as one of my favorite Xmen.
Scott Summers (Cyclops)
I had one of those, and rode it in practice at Star West SX track in Perris, Ca. Mike Healy and I crashed together and broke the frame on that Honda... Leaked oil all over the place. Had to sell it after that. LOL that was a crazy day.
Sharp looking bike, I really like the seat!
I had a 1987 xr600r was a good bike I bought it in good shape but 2nd gear was slipping ended up splitting the cases and using a parts motor 87 xl600 bottom end gears and fixing it also put a new.piston and rings in it while I was at it definitely didn't need it re lapped the valves and put new guide seals in bike was a great trail bike but I definitely like my xr650r better
That bike should really come live in Pennsylvania with the other Kaplan bikes I have???
I think it's too late somebody already bought it
My favorite four stroke probably the most fun bike of all
Torque monster I still want one just to jump off road and ride here n there
Love this bike. Is this one of the models that needs the thicker countershaft sprocket as to not wear out the splines? I know for a fact it's a real thing on some of them. Just don't remember which XR's. Oh I remember now… Definitely on the XR 650 L. How about these? Thank you
BRP The "Golden Standard"
Had an 86 brand new back then
